About four years after the introduction of a new automotive policy by the Federal Government , 53 automakers have so far received approval to establish auto assembly plants in the country .

Already , many of the automakers have commenced operation , leading to the production of 10 ,673 automobiles at the end of last year .

The Nigerian Automotive Design and Development Council gave the figures on Wednesday in a presentation at the Automotive Industry Implementation and Monitoring Committee ’s meeting held in Lagos , which was presided over by the new Director - General, NADDC , Mr . Jelani Aliyu .

Although the council said the installed production capacity of the nation ’s auto assembly plants had hit 408 ,870 automobiles , the 10 ,673 vehicles produced in 2016 represented just about 10 per cent of that capacity.

Despite several challenges militating against the operation of the assembly plants and the success of the auto policy , the council expressed the optimism that the number of this year ’s locally assembled vehicles would surpass last year ’s.

Already , it said the assembly plants had between January and July this year produced 8 ,473 automobiles .

Part of the measures to encourage more production of vehicles locally and continued patronage was the enforcement of an Executive Order by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to all Ministries , Departments and Agencies of the government to buy made -in -Nigeria vehicles .

In 2013, the NADDC said 1 ,605 vehicles were assembled locally ; that was when only 11 firms had approval to assemble vehicles in Nigeria .
The staff strength of all the assembly plants , according to the council , has risen from 745 in 2014 to 4 ,782 currently.

The Director of Policy and Planning , NADDC , Dr. Luqman Mamudu , enumerated a number of factors “why we cannot match the installed production capacity with the operating capacity,” including challenges arising from the Customs administration and poor infrastructure limits on logistics ; access to limited foreign exchange by the sector ; unrestrained importation of pre -owned automobiles ; and smuggling .

To curb the importation of all manner of used vehicles , he stated that the Federal Government was ready to enforce a directive that only automobiles with certificates of roadworthiness would be allowed into the country , going forward .

Meanwhile , the new DG of the NADDC has challenged all automakers to produce low -cost vehicles that will be affordable and readily available for private and commercial uses .

Aliyu said while the automakers should be mindful of the happenings globally in the automotive industry , “let ’s look at new technologies that we can adapt for Nigeria , with the ultimate goal of providing cost -effective vehicles for the people .”

He urged all stakeholders to come together to develop the industry and pledged that the current administration was willing to give the necessary support to make it a win -win situation for both the government and genuine investors .

A court in Rome has ordered an Italian wife to pay her estranged husband € 15 ,000 for the depression he suffered over her affair with a Catholic priest .
The public trial has also led to the shameful resignation of the lover priest .
The court ruling came at the end of a five - year trial and is the latest in a string of sex scandals to rock the Catholic Church in Italy .
Father Vito Isacchi , the priest named in the court case , tendered his resignation in the archdiocese of L ’Aquila on Tuesday after news of the court ruling was made public.
The woman , who has not been named , was ordered to pay thousands of euros , while 45 - year -old Father Isacchi , known as ‘ Don Vito ’, was excused from paying any compensation as the court found him “irrelevant ” to any violation of the marriage.
In a surprise ruling , the court ordered the cuckolded husband to pay €3 ,200 as a contribution towards the priest ’s sacred vestments.
The L ’ Aquila archdiocese expressed its regret and said Father Isaachi had repented for his actions ; but Isaachi resigned in a letter to the local archbishop, Monsignor Giuseppe Petrocchi , amid an outcry over the case .
“Don Vito recognises his moral responsibility and asks forgiveness for the upset and suffering caused to the religious and social community , ” the diocese said in a statement .
“In particular , he has indicated he intends to reject the payment specified by the sentence .”
Father Isacchi comes from the northern city of Bergamo and was transferred from his Rome parish to l ’Aquila, 70 miles from the capital, in 2010 after news of the scandal broke .
The court ruling found he had no responsibility to pay compensation .
“The petitioner ’ s claim against the woman must be accepted and dismissed against the defendant Isacchi , as it presupposes a violation of the obligation of fidelity in the marriage, an obligation for which the third party ( Isacchi ) is completely irrelevant ,” said the judgement , in excerpts published by Italian media .
The court sentence was issued a year ago and made final six months ago , but just came to light this week .
Lawyers for the husband have urged the church to take further action against the priest who they say has violated canon law and his vow of celibacy .

An Arizona woman , Ashley Attson, who left her 17 -month -old daughter in the desert to die and later buried her has been sentenced to 20 years in prison .
The 23 - year- old from Chinle was sentenced by U.S . District Judge David C . Campbell on Monday . Attson had previously pleaded guilty to second -degree murder .
She admitted to placing her child in a stroller , pushing her into the desert on the Navajo Reservation in Apache County , and leaving her there for four days and nights last September , USA Today reported .
“Over the next few days , she met friends for ice cream and posted pictures of herself on Facebook ,” according to a statement from the U. S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona . “When she returned , the child was dead .”
Two days later , prosecutors said Attson placed the body in a trash bag and buried it in an animal hole .
Prosecutors added that Attson’s daughter was born with methamphetamine in her body and had been in the custody of tribal social services for most of her short life .
Attson was granted custody of her daughter just two months before the girl ’s death.
While announcing the sentence , Campbell said what Attson did was an “intentional , cold- hearted , horrendous killing of an innocent child. ”
Attson will spend 20 years in prison followed by supervised release for five years , documents stated .
