BusinessNigeria’s CBN To Legalise Use Of Bitcoin For Transactions by CyberTerkz(op): 2:09am On Dec 19, 2016
Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, the Managing Director, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Commission (NDIC), on Friday said the commission and CBN had set up a committee to look into the trending digital currency, Bitcoin.
According to Bitcoin.org, Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks; managing transactions and the issuing of bitcoins is carried out collectively by the network. Bitcoin is open-source; its design is public, nobody owns or controls Bitcoin and everyone can take part.
On Bitcoin reddit page, it was explained that it is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralised digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, naira- bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation, devaluation, import policies, currency fixing and corrupt banks. It is a true floating currency whose value is determined by demand and supply.
Ibrahim said this at the ongoing 2016 Workshop for Financial Correspondents in Kaduna.
The theme of the workshop is ” Economic Recession and the Nigerians Banking Sector: Opportunities, Challenges and the way Forward”.
“On our part, we have constituted a committee together with the central bank to have an in debt study of this phenomenal bitcoin.
“We will look at its advantages and disadvantages, what it means for the payment system and what it means for safety and security of customers.
“We will also look at what it means for money laundering, anti-corruption, crime and measurement of money /near money instrument for the economy.
“But we need a lot of education to do this and I’m calling on you (media) to educate yourselves about all of this so you can educate the public,” he said.
Ibrahim said ‘bitcoin’ included what is being called block-chain technology-based products in the market.
He said that a lot of Nigerians had already started patronising bitcoin, stressing that ‘it had started to creep in and nobody could stop it.
He said that in Europe and the United States, it had gained currency and some of the leading banks in Europe had also adopted their own versions of bitcoins.
“Some of the central banks have also adopted it and are seriously doing everything possible to bring in the emergence of this invisible products.
“The owners do not need any central bank; they do not need any physical bank.
“If you are a subscriber, you only know yourselves and they give you a bit of the bitcoin and in some countries, you can convert it to cash.
“You can make payments with it because it has been recognised and one of the famous ex-chief executive of Barclays PLC, Antony Jenkins, have joined the group’s board of directors,” againstIbrahim said.
He explained that the financial service industry is not spared in all of this.
On the issue of “MMM”, he said it had been pronounced that it was not recognised and was illegal.
“It is a very serious matter and all hands must be on deck to educate the on things like this.
On the current problems regarding the emergence of wonder banks, Ibrahim said NDIC would not relent in calling on Nigerians, educating and sensitising Nigerians on the dangers of patronising wonder banks.
He urged the media to help and continue to educate the public not to in anyway patronise institutions that were not licenced by the Central Bank or insured by the NDIC.
On financial inclusion, he said although the success recorded was not much but there had been improvement in the area of financial inclusion in the country.
“The successes recorded is not much, but it is a good start given the prevailing number if Nigerians excluded financially,
“I think if you check the statistics that has been rolled out you will appreciate that we have recorded tremendous successes in the last three years.
“This is since the introduction of cashless policy and mobile banking to the extent that more Nigerians are getting involved.
“But we have a very long way to go and it is your responsibility, as journalists, to continue to help educate Nigerians on the advantages of not keeping their money under their pillows and matrasses or in some cases in soak aways and ceilings.
“We know that people fear electronic fraud, but I can assure you that CBN and the banking community are doing everything possible to block all loop holes associated with mobile banking.
“And the advantages far out ways the disadvantages,” he said

CrimeRetired Police Inspector And Wife Shot Dead By Suspected Robbers In Benue by CyberTerkz(op): 9:02pm On Dec 04, 2016
A retired police Inspector and his wife were shot dead on Saturday morning by suspected armed robbers, while they were on their way back to Taraba State after the NKST Church World-wide Choir conference held at Jaki, Kwande LGA of Benue State on Friday.

An eyewitness Iorsalen Terver, said:
"I stopped at Gawa at about 8:14 this morning to buy some foodstuffs on my way to Bali to buy yams when some young men walked to men saying its better to get the yams in the evening when the market is closing.
"Little did I know I was the target. Pushing me to hit the road so they can waste me... Oh God.. The pastor arrived shortly with a Toyota picnic. They bought yams I even helped to negotiate with the seller. We took off the same time before I stopped to excrete. Just seconds we heard gun shots and that was how they wasted this couple"

Ben Dizwa, who confirmed the sad incident, identified the pastor as Mr. Joseph Tsafa, a retired police inspector who was one of the participant from NKST Nachi-Bali Classis in Taraba State. According to his Facebook post:
"He left the event venue with his wife, Cecilia Tsafa, the woman leader (Kwase-hemen) of NKST Nachi-Bali Consistory women Fellowship, and Atese Anum (a pastor's wife) on Friday evening for Zakibiam where they stayed through the night. Early this morning,(Saturday) the couple set out for Bali LGA of Taraba State where they are based. In Katsina-Ala, they assisted two women who were heading towards their direction making their number, five in the vehicle.
"At about 9am on Saturday morning of 3rd December, 2016, they passed a place called Gidan Gawa along Katsina-Ala —Takum road in Taraba State. There is a portion of road that is terribly bad that vehicles must slow down to avoid accident or damage, so they also slowed down. Strangely, some armed young men came out of the bush and ordered them to stop and they simply obeyed. The came forth and demanded for money from Mr Tsafa.
"What really happened that led to a gun shot could not be ascertained by even eye witness but it is thought that the man had no enough money for them having stay away for nearly two weeks which they become annoyed and shot him still on the steering. The bullet shot at the man penetrated and also killed his wife who was seated in the front seat. The remaining three persons who were seated at the back seat were not shot, they were searched and valuables taking away from them. As I write, the corpses of the couple has been deposited at a mortuary in Zakibiam, Ukum LGA."

CrimeBenue Prophet Abducts 3 Girls And Impregnates Them by CyberTerkz(op): 10:24am On Oct 28, 2016
A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court has on Thursday remanded a cleric, Elijah Ebimone, in prison for allegedly abducting three girls and turning them to sex slaves.

Ebimone, 32, is facing a two-count charge of abduction and causing miscarriage, punishable under Sections 274 and 233 of the Penal Code, Laws of Benue State, 2004.

Police prosecutor said: “However, they got to Makurdi and he turned them into sex slaves, impregnating all of them at different times and also causing them to miscarry the pregnancies.”

The Magistrate, Theresa Wergba, ordered the remand of the accused and adjourned the matter till December 28 for further mention.

Her action followed the application for adjournment made by the Prosecutor, Insp. Daniel Suende who said that investigation by the police was ongoing.

Insp. Suende told the court that a team of detectives led by Insp. Attai Sule attached to the State CID, Makurdi, received information about the activities of the cleric on October 20.

He said that the detectives launched an investigation into the matter and arrested the accused.

The prosecutor said that Ebimone, who claimed to be a prophet, had been abducting young girls and using them as sex slaves.

He said that the cleric went all the way to Delta state last June and abducted Victory Mieturda, Dolor Dinah and Esther Young and brought them to Makurdi.

Insp Suende said that the man had deceived the girls’ parents into believing that he was assisting the girls to travel to Ukraine to seek greener pasture.

According to NAN, when the case was called, the court did not take the plea of the accused because it lacked jurisdiction.

PoliticsAnother Nominee Rejects President Buhari's Ambassadorial Nomination by CyberTerkz(op): 11:26am On Oct 25, 2016
One of the non-career ambassadorial nominees President Muhamamdu Buhari sent to the Senate for confirmation last week, Usman Bugaje from Kastina state, has turned down his nomination.

Bugaje is the second nominee to reject the offer, after another‎ nominee, Pauline Tallen, a former deputy governor of Plateau state, rejected her nomination, stating she will not be able to pick up the appointment as she needed time to attend to her ailing husband. ‎

While Tallen announced her decision to decline the appointment in public, Bugaje is yet to release a statement on why he is rejecting his nomination in the media.

Speaking to state house correspondents after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, Simon Lalong, Plateau state governor, commended Tallen for her decision.

“Pauline is an astute politician from my state, and part of the issue we also raised was on some of the appointments that were made. So, all the states that had complaints are going to put it in writing and the president promised he is going to look into it,” he said.

Regarding Tallen’s decision to reject the appointment, Lalong said: “Well, it is not only about her husband; I think is the dimension of plateau politics because I had already made complaints to Mr President that appointments should not be concentrated in one zone.

“And so, all these appointments came again from one zone, in that particular zone. So the complaints that are coming from our state is not about her own personal interest; it is the fact that two ambassadorial appointments are coming from the same zone.

“That is my zone. We had complained that the next appointment should go to the other zone, the central and the northern zone. And so when that appointment came, the kind of uproar that followed also necessitated an intervention.

“And I think as a matured politician she stepped down and sacrificed that for the people of Plateau. We are still working on a replacement for that. It is not a big issue but at times a little consultation would have solved that problem because these are issues in the interest of the state.

“You can’t have two appointments, very key appointments at that, coming from a particular zone that is already overloaded with appointments. All the federal appointments are from the southern zone, so it would not be fair. That is why we are approaching Mr. President to consider fairness and appoint people from those areas that do not have representation.”

BusinessTraders In Makurdi Reject Move By Benue Government To Relocate Wurukum Market by CyberTerkz(op): 2:01pm On Oct 23, 2016
Benue State Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry Prof. Tersoo Kpelai says no one will frustrate the relocation process of markets from the cluster and disorganized present state to the newly built and commissioned Makurdi International market.

Prof. Kpelai speaking at the weekend in Makurdi with journalists stated that agitation to relocate the Wurukum market to the new site had started taking place long ago and all the relevant stakeholders including markets union and NGO’s were duly notified.

While the process was going on some traders in the market craved to be allowed time and that the notice of movement to the permanent site was too short and we responded by adding more time.

However, as the negotiation was going on between relevant market unions and the government on the other hand to our greatest amazement we received and injunction from the market union through their legal counsel to stop further action on the movement.

Another twist which has been attributed to their stay-put attitude is the claim that two of their virgins were buried somewhere within the market and as such insisted to remain there.

It could be recalled that the former administration of Governor Gabriel Suswam built over 1000 stores at the ultra modern international market with state of the art facilities including water and fire proof materials which can prevent fire outbreaks as well as others in order to model it to current international market standards.

“The Wurukum market is a distortion of the Makurdi original master plan but was initially allowed to stay because a befitting facility to accommodate them was not yet in place”.

“And today you can see that with the buildup of traffic around that area the truth is that it needs to be relocated which is what we are simply doing towards easing traffic congestion on that road”.

“To my greatest amazement the traders union in that market who initially had agreed to the planned relocation made a reverse decision and went to engage services of a lawyer to stall the process”.

He however reminded the market union that it was for their own good and no Jupiter will hold the government at ransom, urging them that if there is any issues bordering them they should come to a round table to reconcile the matter or else anyone who dares the government would have himself to blame.

“Just as I speak the traders union at the market headed by one Mr. Gabriel Igu has levied all their members to remit N1000 naira for legal proceedings and are billed to embarked on strike to forestall the relocation moves”.

The Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun has disclosed that she cannot predict when the nation will get out of the current economic recession it is in.

The Finance Minister, speaking during an interview in Abuja said it is rather best to chart out a course of growth for the nation which will subsequently bring an end to Recession.

“And it may take longer than we would like, but we will definitely get out of it. We are already seeing some positive signs in agriculture and solid minerals; and with what we are trying to do with other sectors, I am very sure we will get out of it soon.”

EducationWhy We Had Student Union Activist Arrested- UNILAG by CyberTerkz(op): 11:08am On Sep 25, 2016
Femi Adeyeye, a student of Unilag was arrested a couple of days ago when he came on campus for meeting with other fellow student union activists.
He had earlier been rusticated for remarks he made about the school management of social media website Facebook.
The management of the University explained why they had him arrested in a statement by Unilag’s Deputy Registrar (Information) Toyin Adebule.

The statement read; “Our attention was drawn to the recent arrest of Mr. Olorunfemi Adeyeye, who in spite of the regulations governing the conduct of rusticated students, organised a group of boys to cause commotion at the university’s gate. His subsequent arrest along with other non-students of the university (two of whom are serving youth corps members) was unconnected with any protest.

“It was a consequence of his desperate attempt to attract cheap publicity, unearned public sympathy and continuously bring the name of the university into disrepute. It should be reiterated that the earlier misdemeanour of Mr. Adeyeye attracted expulsion. The university Senate in tempering justice with mercy handed him a four-semester rustication. His recent conduct will do him no good,”

Adebule said further that the comments made by Adeyeye were unsubstantiated and insulting and a breach of the ‘Social Misconducts and Penalties Regulations of University of Lagos. (UNILAG)
He said; “He avers that the first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering obtained by the Vice Chancellor in 1974 from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) is a waste. Our university is committed to awarding its certificates not only for learning but for character as well.
“Over 7, 000 degree and diploma certificates duly signed by the vice-chancellor and registrar of the university are awarded every year. It is, therefore, surprising, that someone expecting to receive one of such certificates would cast aspersions on the entire learning processes and academic integrity of the university,”

PoliticsAnother Contract Scam Rocks Benue State APC As Chieftains Petition EFCC by CyberTerkz(op): 10:20am On Aug 14, 2016
The officials are alleging gross irregularities and fraud in the award of contracts to some APC chieftains in the state.
Some of the officials indicted are said to be currently holding public offices in the state.
According to an online platform, Naij.com, the situation started when the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, earmarked over 700 projects in the state owned primary schools which ranges from construction of new classroom blocks to renovation of existing facilities across the 23 LGAs of the State.
Governor Samuel Ortom reportedly mandated that executives of each of the 276 council wards in the state nominate a party member that is a contractor to bid and be giving a contract project for each of the wards, as a way to reward political patronage.
The governor’s thinking was that the arrangement will enable the party Chieftains use the proceeds from the execution of the contracts to fund the party activities at the ward and LG levels, rather than waiting for funds from the state government.
Trouble, however, started when after raising funds amongst themselves and sponsoring a company to obtain tax clearance and regularize the bidding documents, and bided for a contract. Afterwards, some wards and LGAs were not favoured in the award of contracts.
Instead, companies that did not participate in the bidding process and some companies belonging to party leaders and public office holders were allegedly given as much as 5 slots across some LGAs.
This situation did not go down well with many ward and LG excos who are now demanding that the instructions of the governor must be adhered to, otherwise, the party must refund their hard earned money which they contributed to fund companies.“It’s unfair! This is not what the governor wanted for the people. We expected that, with the formula designed by the governor the award of contracts would trickle down to the ward level where party excos would not only benefit, but would also be privileged to monitor the project, since it is to be situated in their ward,” a source said.Similarly, on Tuesday, July 19, there was chaos at the Benue state House of Assembly as parliamentary proceedings degenerated into fisticuffs between lawmakers over an alleged 750 million naira car fraud. The fracas was fueled by an alleged probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, into the purchase of cars for the lawmakers.

PoliticsN3.1trillion Fraud: No One Can Prove I Stole Rivers State Money - Amaech by CyberTerkz(op): 9:38pm On Jul 28, 2016
The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has denied allegations of corruption as well as receiving over N3.1 trillion as alleged by his successor, Nyesom Wike.

While speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on corruption organised by the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, has denied allegations of corruption against him, adding that as governor of Rivers State for eight years, he was transparent and did not embezzle money meant for the people.

The minister who denied receiving over N3.1 trillion as alleged by his successor, Governor Nyesom Wike, said Rivers State became the first to implement the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) act in Nigeria during his tenure as governor of the State.

“If you had followed the Rivers State government when I was governor, we were the first state to introduce the Public Procurement Law in the country. The state cabinet used to call the Director General of Public Procurement in the state as an alternative governor, that they wanted an amendment to that law. The reason they wanted amendment is that he (DG) refused to increase the threshold to one hundred million naira, per ministry, instead he reduced it to 10 million naira.

“I had a battle with him (DG BPE) and the world bank who insisted that we should not go for an amendment but should persuade him to increase the threshold. I remember the cabinet tried to go to court against him and I remember that he was also trying to go to court against Commissioners. In fact, the procurement DG wrote a memo that I felt was very incriminating requesting that since the law requires the governor to take any commissioner who doesn’t comply with the public procurement law to court, I should please take the commissioner of education to court for not complying… Everybody in the cabinet felt that he was an alternative governor, they felt that he was slowing the process,” he said.

According to Premium Times, Amaechi said transparency in the use of public funds was key to his administration as governor, and that the Rivers community was fully briefed periodically on how funds were being utilised.

“Within that period we insisted on engaging the indigenous communities on how much we received and how we spent the money. That is why I feel that after this ministerial appointment, I should do everything possible to stay away from government because in spite of all the forms of transparency I introduced in government, one man could begin to tell lies to Nigerians and Nigerians believe him.

“The governor of Rivers State said I squandered N3 trillion naira. I did not receive up to N1.8 trillion naira as governor both from IGR and funds from federal allocation. So, how could I have squandered money I did not even receive in the first place? You can see the politics of lies and lies.

“As Minister of Transportation, I run an open and transparent system. I believe in name and shame. What name and shame does is, if you name and shame those of them who don’t have conscience they won’t come to public functions. I do have conscience. In fact, it was the word corruption that brought me to this occasion because I wanted to see who will get up and say to me, ‘this is evidence that you are corrupt.’

“We went to court against the Rivers State government on their allegation of corruption against me. The Court of Appeal said, produce that document that found this man (Amaechi) guilty of those crimes and up till today he (Wike) has not produced it,” Amaechi said.

Travel2 Escape Death As Car Flies Off Jabi Bridge In Abuja - (photos) by CyberTerkz(op): 9:11pm On Jul 28, 2016
Tragedy was averted on Wednesday as a yet-to-be-identified driver and a passenger escaped death after a Volkswagen car they were travelling in fell off a bridge in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
The accident reportedly occurred at about 10 am along Shehu Yar’Adua Expressway opposite the Jabi Lake Mall, Premium Times gathered.

The black-coloured car with REG number: PX 781 AAA, reportedly missed the Jabi Lake by a few inches.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, who reportedly witnessed the accident but pleaded not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, said the driver lost control due to over speeding.

According to a video being circulated on YouTube, the official was heard saying: “I was coming about a hundred meters away when the car flew off the neck of the bridge and disappeared down the cliff.

“The driver of the car was running very fast on the speed lane when another car interrupted him and he attempted to veer towards the service lane.

“He, however, lost control as the car swerved off the neck of the bridge and glided dangerously towards the lake and only stopped inches from the water.

“Both the driver and the lone passenger in the vehicle came out alive and were taken to a nearby hospital,” the official added, although he did not disclose the name of the hospital.
