I remembered when i told my brother i wanted to study mechanical engineering, he told me all of his friends that studied mechanical did not get job and doesn't even have any skill to start up anything. He made it compulsory i study medicine, my dad of blessed memory said i should listen to my brother, i agreed. I wrote the first Jamb with medicine as my choice, i failed. When my brother was not around, i have started working in an electrical store as sales boy and picking some skill from there, i picked another jamb form with my salary from sales boy work, i filled electrical engineering as my choice without telling anybody. Today I am an electrical engineer and it far pay off and better than me studying my initial mechanical engineering.

Wow. I luv ur resilience. Mech Engineering has bn flooded. And there seems to be little or no job for us in this part of the world. Even Mechanical Engineers in India are now traveling out.

Medicine is another ball game entirely, u can be good in engineering and not do well in Medical school and u can be very gud in Medicine but will struggle in an Engineering course. During my days in school, I was very gud in Further Maths, Mathematics, statistics, physics and Technical drawing, average in Chemistry but poor in Biology. That Biology alone will act as a stumbling block if I had attempted Medicine.

Congrats u found ur true calling in Elect Elect. If I studied Electrical Engineering I would have delved into big time wiring and having my own company. Collecting contracts here and there. Gud bless ur hussle Chief.

I don't really share your view, there is nothing wrong with Mechanical Engineering, if you are a graduate of any engineering course, you can be as good as any graduate of Physics, Mathematics, and even Computer Science or Engineering. It is just a matter of picking up some relevant books and read. The course itself has taught you that. It is only because Nigeria is a funny country that makes gold looks like Aluminum. I know few friends that finished as you did that now banker's and accountant's, they in banks and auditing firms, even KPMG! My point is as an engineer, you can always maneuver your way out of any adverse economy. You are wired for that. I would still have preferred your brother to have studied Mechanical Engineering, then switch to computer whatever. I hold an M.Sc in the same course during the inglorious days of IBB. I don't regret it. My wife suggested to my son to read Computer Science, I refused, it is still better to be an engineer, whichever field, then computer training can follow. As an engineer, you are taught to reason better and dabble to any field.
You create machines for every profession, even medical field relies on your skill to perform.

Sorry Chief, my reply came late. Travelled for a few days. God bless u sir. I worked in a bank for a while. I luv ur point of view. Alot of upcoming or fresh graduates who are confused like I was then need to read this piece. I wish I had an elder brother or a mentor like u to properly advise and guide my path while being a fresh graduate. But I still Tank God for my life.
