JONATHAN OR BUHARI; A CASE FOR THE WEST? It is no longer news that the state of Nigeria’s polity has gone beyond personality and reputation but that of regionalism and religious sentiments. The state of the nation is what I called “tragedy at its peak”. Yet the citizens seem not to be factually concern rather, they are selfishly carried away. The 2015 general election is gradually drawing closer, with the political gladiators brimming up their political tactics. The two main political candidates vying for the presidential seat include the incumbent president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, of the PDP, and former military head of state, Rtd. Gen. Mohammed Buhari, of the APC. These two parties i.e. Jonathan and Buhari are purposely determined to take over the Villa at Aso Rock. Rtd. Gen. Mohammed Buhari is a Northerner, and has enjoyed massive support from his region. On the other hand, Dr Goodluck Jonathan is a southerner who, as well, is also enjoying massive support from his region most especially from the south-south, and the south-east part of the country. Moreover, followers of the two political camps have cited their reasons for supporting their persons, for examples, they’ve cited the case of corruption, insecurity, economic development, stability, excessive malignancy and alienation, and political interest. Though several allegations are all up in the polity, but the truth must be told that supportership is influenced simply on regionalism. It is so rare to see a southerner supporting a Buhari, and a northerner supporting the candidature of Jonathan. And with the regional syndrome’s influence on the electorate, then the big question arise “WHAT SHALL SEPARATE THESE TWO?” The answer to this big question, which I believe, is the WEST. The candidate who wins the hearts and votes of the western electorates will definitely win the presidential election coming up in the first quarter of 2015. Years back, the western region was known as the Wild Wild West because of its incessant political unrest in the region. The western part of the country has a big and decisive role to play in the upcoming presidential election. In the 2011 presidential election, it was a keenly contested election between these same political gladiators. In which Dr Goodluck Jonathan defeated his opponent. In that same election, Buhari won in most states in the northern region and Jonathan won the Eastern and Southern part of the country. With their exploits in their respective regions, it wasn’t enough to won any of them the election. The votes, in the western region, had to come to the rescue of Jonathan to be victorious. The decisive fate may also be declared by the western region in this coming presidential election. It is now left for the electorate to peruse, without the altercation of thought, into the Nigeria’s state of being, and vote wisely for the RIGHT ONE. WHICH WAY! NIGERIA I dedicate this write-up to my indefatigable lecturer Late Mr. Ayeni G.O. |

A POOR AND OUT OF SORTS FOOTBALL FEDERATION Nigeria’s Football structure is a joke and has been ridiculed for scandals unlike any other federation in the world. Officials are in and out of court instead of carrying out their duties of football development. The federation has always been lacking and if the Super Eagles have excelled in the past it has not been thanks to the federation but in spite of it. In the past (the 90s) we were blessed with exceptional players that were so talented and determined it masked the inadequacies of our football management. Our federation is incapable of creating conducive winning conditions that a national team needs to succeed at the highest level. Today, with all due respect, the quality of the current crop of players is not like the golden era and all incompetencies are more glaring and it shows in the laughing stock we have become. |
Nigeria Super Eagles’ Greatest Dilema! For some people in Nigeria, football is no longer a sport, but rather it is all about money, nepotism and politics. The state of Nigerian football today is unprecedented and the worst it has ever been. Forget that we won AFCON 2013,we mean the situations of the national teams, football federation and Local League! When as defending champions you fail to qualify for the African Cup of Nations from a weak group, your football federation is in disarray, you have a disputed coaching crew and no quality coach is interested in applying for the job, then you have a great dilemma on your hands. What we are experiencing today was long overdue. We qualified for last year’s World Cup in a lacklustre manner in a group that was everything but competitive. |
