The government of Uganda has suspended all public transport links with neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo following fears over the rapid spread of a deadly Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo.

Ugandan authorities announced the emergency measures on Thursday as health officials intensified efforts to prevent the virus from crossing deeper into the country. The restrictions come after a major Ebola outbreak was declared last week in Ituri province in eastern DR Congo, a region that shares a busy border with Uganda.

The decision follows growing concern after Uganda reported two suspected Ebola cases involving Congolese nationals who crossed into the country. Officials disclosed that the suspected infections included one death and one possible case of transmission.

António Guterres has renewed calls for Africa to be granted permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, describing the continent’s exclusion from the world’s most powerful decision-making organ as an “historic injustice” that must be corrected.

The UN Secretary-General made the strong appeal on Tuesday during the opening of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, where more than 30 African leaders gathered to discuss the continent’s future role in global governance, economic development and strategic partnerships.

The high-profile summit was co-hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron, with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu among the prominent leaders in attendance.

Held under the theme “Africa-France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth,” the summit focused on economic cooperation, multilateral reforms, digital innovation, energy transition and Africa’s increasing influence in shaping international policy.

Addressing world leaders and delegates, Guterres declared that Africa’s continued absence from permanent representation on the Security Council remains one of the clearest examples of structural inequality in global governance.

Most displaced people in Uganda have fled conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country has gained international recognition for maintaining one of the world’s most progressive refugee policies, granting refugees access to education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and land for farming.

However, humanitarian organisations have warned that the steady rise in arrivals is stretching food supplies, shelter systems, and essential social services across refugee settlements.

2.Chad

Chad has experienced a sharp increase in refugee arrivals due to the prolonged conflict in neighbouring Sudan.

By 2026, the country is hosting more than 1.3 million Sudanese refugees, particularly in border communities already struggling with weak infrastructure, food shortages, and limited access to clean water. Aid agencies say overcrowded camps and inadequate international funding have worsened conditions for displaced families.

The influx has also intensified pressure on Chad’s healthcare facilities and humanitarian support systems.
