Ondo state government-owned Rufus Polytechnic Owo (RUGIPO), has asked its students to return to campus for academic activities after a break of three months.

Banji Alabi, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Polytechnic announced the resumption of academic activities at the institution in a press statement issued on Tuesday in Akure.

Our correspondent reported that the students shut down Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Owo on The 23rd of January 2018 following a violent protest.

The students had protested over the newly introduced "No school, fee No examination" policy of the school’s management.

However, in the course of the protest, the students also destroyed some of the school’s properties including the ICT building.

A committee set up by the government to look into the destruction at the school had told Governor Rotimi Akeredolu that the students damaged properties worth N168 million during their protest.

In the statement, Mr Alabi said the Rufus Giwa Poly was re-opening for academic session on the order of the Ondo state government after series of consultation.

He added that new and returning students and have been asked to resume on April 30th and May 14th, 2018.

The Chairman of the Governing Council also revealed that the returning students will pay a sum of N12, 000 as reparation fee and will be accompanied by a certificate of good behavior.

He, however, maintained that the school would put in place mechanisms in order to prevent future occurrence that could lead the students in destroying school properties.

"After due consultations with the Governor of Ondo State, the governing council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic has authorized the re-opening of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic. All new students (ND 1 & HND 1) are to resume on Monday April 30th 2018. Returning students are to resume on the 14th of May 2018.

“Returning students are expected to make a payment of N12, 000 as reparation fees and a certificate to the effect that they will henceforth be of good behavior and comply with all rules and regulations of the school.

"The letters are to be signed by a prominent member of society e.g JP, Members of the state House of Assembly, Civil Servants not below the rank of a permanent secretary chairman of the local government council or a legal practitioner

“As we advance in our mission to reposition Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, the Governing Council wishes to acknowledge the cooperation of various stakeholders with on-going consultations and the tasks ahead.

“As we work to ensure the commencement of what we hope would be a seamless academic calendar, we require the continuing good faith, patience and commitment of stakeholders.

"In deconstructing the old order, we would require concessions, sacrifice and tolerance towards changes that may occur. We cannot successfully rebuild for the future without first acknowledging that change comes with pain.

“We are open to ideas. We will support all legitimate avenues to engage with any member of the Polytechnic community and utilize every constructive contribution.

“However, we discourage any activity or attempt to reverse the progress so far made. While stakeholders are entitled to the freedom of speech, association and peaceful gathering, it is important to do so within the limits of Nigerian law.

“Accordingly, we will adopt all legally-available means to prevent any breakdown of law and order or disruption of gains already recorded as we reopen the school for academic activities.

“We are passionate about this wonderful opportunity of changing our Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a leading research institute committed to improving the human condition through advanced science and technology and demand for your enthusiastic support," he said.

Iconic singer, 2Baba has revealed his intention to contest for political office, according to PM News. The singer who was once criticized for pulling out of a protest in demand of good governance, which he initiated, made this revelation in Lagos.

He spoke about his interest in politics and his plan to contest for a position soon but he held back the detail of the position he is interested in and the party under which he would be contesting. He said:

“Politics affects everything I do. So, I am definitely going to be interested in politics. I will soon participate as a contestant and speak the truth at all times.

The singer also addressed the herdsmen crisis ravaging his home state, Benue State. He called on people to continue to send relief materials to the state, to help and support the affected communities. He said:

We just need more people to support and join hands to continue extending relief materials to affected people.

This is the most important thing we can now do; bring succour to the victims

This thing is going on for too long, repeating itself over and over. There has to be a solution, the victims are not goats they are humans and should be taken care of.

I feel terrible not because it also happened in Benue State, where I hail from, but because it is also happening almost throughout the federation.

It does not have to happen to someone you know before you speak up about it”

The College hereby invites the following categories of candidates for its Post UTME Screening Exercise:

Candidates for Degree Programmes: Minimum of 180 marks in UTME.
Candidates for NCE Programmes: Minimum of 150 marks in UTME.
Candidates for Direct Entry (DE): NCE certificate.

NOTE:
All candidates referred to above must have made Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, their Institution of First Choice.
Qualified candidates who did not make Adeyemi College of Education their Institution of First Choice can still do so by applying to JAMB for change of institution. (for both Degree and NCE programmes).
Candidates who applied for degree programmes but scored between 150 and 179, and are interested in pursuing the College’s NCE programmes, can also apply. However, they are expected to have changed their institution of first choice to Adeyemi College of Education (NCE) on the JAMB website before applying.

METHOD OF APPLICATION

Candidates are to visit http://aceondo.net to register for the screening exercise after the payment of the sum of N2,000.00 (two thousand naira only), via etranzact or Remita at any commercial bank. You can also pay online using your debit or credit card.

Once payment is confirmed, candidates are to:

2. Fill the online form carefully and correctly as editing is not allowed once the application form is submitted.
3. Upload a clear passport photograph not more than 50kb which must be JPEG or JPG with no eye glasses or veil.
4. Upload your SSCE (WAEC / NECO/ NABTEB) and NCE results where applicable.
5. Ensure that all fields in the form are completely filled.
6. Cross-check your entries properly.
7. Submit your application form.
8. Print out the Post UTME Test Slip

After the online screening exercise, candidates found prima facie qualified will be notified via text messages as well as e-mails, and invited for a CBT Aptitude Test in the College. The printed Post UTME slip would indicate the conditions, date, batch and time of the Aptitude Test.

A History Degree One Student of Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo, Miss Oluwaseun Mary Olaniyan has regained freedom from suspected kidnappers. Her freedom came eleven days after she was declared missing in the institution.

Narrating her ordeal at her church, The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), located at Ogunsulire Street in Ondo town, Oluwaseun who sobbed intermittently said she was kidnapped at about 6.30p.m outside the main gate of the College along the Ondo/Ore highway by four men seated in a vehicle painted in Ondo State taxi colour.

She stated that she boarded the taxi cab alongside a lady at the same location. The two of them were going to Yaba in Ondo city.

The distraught history student explained that as soon as she boarded the vehicle she became unconscious but later found herself in a building located inside a thick forest. She explained that while in the hands of the captors, alongside five other victims, they were fed with only water and saw strange men coming in a jeep vehicle to collect something she suspected to be human flesh and which was always concealed in a cellophane bags.

On how she was able to escape from the hands of her captors, Oluwaseun described the development as divine saying it was while they (captors) were quarrelling that she took the opportunity to escape alongside others into the bush.

She said she trekked inside the forest until she got to the Ile-Oluji/Ipetu Ijesa road, where she met a lady on the road and asked for direction to Ondo town.

She said the lady told her she was very close to Ile-Oluji and it was while she was trekking along the road that she got to Igbo Oja where she made efforts to reach her mother on her phone. It was after she contacted her mother that her father called her and she informed him that she had reached Itanla junction along the Ondo/Akure highway.

Meanwhile, the arrival of the missing girl elicited excitement and joy in the town. At her church, members of the church including the presiding Pastor were seen singing and praising God. The same scenario played itself out at Adeyemi College of Education as students and workers were seeing expressing joy for her safe return.

Commenting on the development, both the father and mother of Oluwaseun, Mr. and Mrs. Akintan Olaniyan, expressed joy and sang praises to God. They thanked God as well as the Adeyemi College of Education Management, the Police, other security agencies for their efforts during their travail.

Reacting to the development, the Provost of the College, Professor Olukoya Ogen thanked God for her safe return and referred her for immediate medical attention to the College Health Centre.

As at the time of filling this report, the victim is being attended to by doctors at the College Health Centre. He particularly thanked the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, the College Chief Security Officer, Col. Olorunfemi Onoba, Rtd, the Dean of Students Affairs, Mr. Olaniyi Olaluwoye, the Police and all others who assisted with prayers and support to ensure that the student returned home safely.
