A number of factors influence how we perceive risks associated with different situations. Note: Risk perception isn't always rational. 1. People with social, political, or economic interests tend to downplay certain risks and emphasize others that suit their agendas. For instance, we tolerate risks that we choose; such as driving, smoking, or overeating. While objecting to risks we cannot control; such as potential exposure to slight amounts of toxic substances. 2. Most people have difficulty understanding and believing probabilities. We feel that there must be patterns and connections in events, even though statistical theory says otherwise. If the coin is turned up heads last time, we feel certain that it will turn up tails next time. In the same way, it is difficult to understand the meaning of a 1-in-10,000 risk of being poisoned by a chemical. 3. Our personal experiences are often misleading. Most people expecially in this part of the world are guilty of this because of beingtoo religious, instead to be pragmatic. They feel it is more rare and unlikely to occur than is actually may be. 4. We have an exaggerated view of our abilities to control our fate. Many people, including me are also guilty of this. We generally consider ourselves above-average drivers, safer than most when using appliances or power tools, and less likely than others to suffer medical problems. We also feel we can avoid hazards because we are wiser or luckier than others. 5. We always have an irrattional fear or distrust of certain technologies or activities that leads us to overestimate their dangers. Nuclear power, for instance, is viewed as very risky, while coal-burning power plants seem to be familiar and relatively benign; in fact, coal mining, shipping, and combustion cause more death each year than nuclear power generation. During the late 1000's a Persian called Hasan founded a Mohammedan religious Order. They were mystics and took drugs, and they murdered their enemies. The Order was tightly disciplined. In 1090 Hasan made his headquarters in Khorassan in a castle called Alamut, which meant the Eagle's Nest. Hasan and his followers were called Sheikh-el-jebel, the 'Old Man of the Mountains' to Europeans. Hasan's followers were called Hashshashin, hashish-eaters, which became Assassins in English. Assassination means murdering for religious or political reasons. The Assassins had an active headquarters in Syria and many secret branches. They were opposed to the religious views of most rulers of the Mohammedan world. For 150 years they terrorized the Middle East with religious and political murders. Even Saladin was unable to destroy them. They often allied with the European Crusaders against their fellow religionists. Only in 1255 was their power ended. Assassinations have been committed in almost every country. Source: Herver Junior World Encyclopedia. |
