It was a 4 day event and at the end of the day, the best idea wins, someone did the backend, another the UI and I just worked on the mobile
Ok, thanks

Will it be like how questions concerning DSAs are asked on leetcode or is it different ?

Individual my task was to build a Jquery Mobile app and eventually J2ME
But was it a team effort ie you handled a particular division or did you do it like a knock out challenge ie individuals from each team go up against other individuals from another team ? And also, were you timed ?

Yes also won one at CCHUB, can't think of any dos and don't other than coding. Mayne not stealing competitors code, never heard any strict rules
But what really happens, are you all given individual projects or do you do it as a team

So it is widely believed that Nairaland started of with SMF forum script. While most of the current UI hasn't changed much from the early days, it is also widely rumored that the forum was migrated to Python.

And NL doesn't need to share their source codes with anyone. It's now proprietary and has become Intellectual property.
But if they are not willing to spend to upgrade their site, let them open source it

What's wrong about the UI? It's not "flashy" yes, but what would you rather have? Flashy UI with no content as all the other pretenders to NL's throne or "outdated UI" with loads of content whether good or bad. I will always pick function over flashy. Can the UI be better? Of course? Can I make it better? No. Can I live with it as it is? Yes.

And NL doesn't have to do anything at the moment. They are effectively a monopoly. And until there is competition, there won't be much change to the UI.
Nobody is saying anything about reducing the functionality, but this website/forum is static. Updating it will do no one no harm. It will help improve the asthetics of the website. Also concerning the issue of competition you raised, the only reason nl has no competition is because it was created early on in the era of the internet coming to Nigeria and many just wanted to try something new but if nl was to enter the competition its DAUs will be very low

When I was coding, all these fancy Frontend/Backend dichotomy hadn't taken strong hold. So our emphasis was to write up code that fully implemented business logic. That was core and critical. "Pretty" frontend were far from our minds. In fact there was a course we did called Human-Computer Interaction which I totally hated.
Omo, you have been in the game for a long time, i am guessing early 2000s or late 1900s. Omo

Not really maybe, just maybe being intentional about innovation.
Cos money can solve most of these things, not like he needs community help

I think those green emojis in particular are imported from a certain library that was popular back then... Cos I've seen them on other websites too.
I presented open sourcing as the most realistic plan because can seun actually release money for this

open sourcing nl will most likely solve most of the problems

Another post where a Muslim was asking if Allah permits them to use POS was pushed to FP, and bear in mind that only Muslims can comment there...

Exactly. One thing with older people is that we can't accept change.

The same way an old man loves his good ol' reggae music and local food is the same way Seun loves his good ol' perfect Nairaland interface and will do nothing to change it.

Well... I've been on Nairaland on and off since 2018 or so with different accounts (which I disable most)

And every section is just the same.
Rubbish contents, outdated website.

I'm sorry but you're like the 1000th person to make this observation...

I think Nairaland ventured from a passion to a business.

As long as the business is moving, Seun doesn't really care what we think.

And there are also some people who take this place and all it's good and bad as home, so no matter how bad it gets, they won't abandon it.

Hmm, welcome to the club.
if you were given the platform, what will be the changes you will propose to seun ?

Lol....I'm being pedantic I know. But it's mostly because tech person speaking to tech person, we should use the right terms. Imagine a Surgeon saying they have to remove your "belly" when they mean they want to remove an appendix which is inside the "belly". You go gree make dem commot your "belly"?
Lol. But it is sha true let us be using the right terms sha. But what are your stacks anyway, you seem like a backend dude

It's practically useless to seun.

In short this place is just a trashbin

For an IT person to say "wide canopy of the...term server" says a lot. When I walk into a bank and they have a outage and some lay person says to me "no network", I can forgive them. But the same thing said by an IT person to another IT person is "unforgivable". There is more to hosting a website than just "server costs". But if you want to refer to the entire infrastructure and support cost as "server cost" then be my guest. And don't think when NL is hosted on a server we are talking CPanel shared hosting.
OK, i give up
ProgrammingRe: My Nairaland Observation by danielclerkson(op):
airsaylongcome:
So when you say "server fees" maybe you need to break it down. A lot of people throw "server" around when they mean the entire infrastructure that makes the service available. Cloud flare for example is a huge cost centre for NL. Also high availability, redundancy, data Backups (and disaster recovery) are all non-server related items that are major cost centres.
hmm. But to be sincere, all the points you have highlighted all fall under server costs and hosting. Cloudflare which you mentioned is a hosting company. Really check it, nl does not have and state-of-the-art security system and the koko of the platform is that it required alot of information which is kept on servers after it is hosted by cloudflare and the last place where additional infrastructure is just to ensure the utilization and moderation of high traffic and that is all. Correct me if i am wrong, but all these fall under the wide canopy of the aforementioned term, "server"

You really think the only cost to host the biggest forum in Africa is "server fees"?
I am not really sure they pay mods, but aside from that what else could be taking any significant amount of money ?

I meant the programming board is not too important to seun. Other sections like romance bring more traffic.

Imagine a thread like :
Node 22 is out with hot features making frontpage vs
I just caught my neighbour's husband with my little sister

You know the romance one will trend generally.
lol the topic comparism cracked me up, but it is true oh the ad rates for this section is low compared to other sections

eh, wat are you saying. Only the money for ads can change someone's life oh. Just check the ad rates for different sections, you will be shocked. The only thing taking seun's money is the server fees
