Its quite demanding, using like 4gb of ram is definitely not recommended, but 8gb plus is okay, you won't feel it, its more optimized and better than windows. I was on discord, playing a game and on spotify all at thesame time with my 8gb of ram, there were little lags from time to time, but i'll say it handled it well

Which Gnome extensions are you using? The bar looks clean — wondering if that's Dash to Panel or you went with a full shell theme. And how is Wayland working on the HP ProBook? Some older Intel iGPUs still have a few rough edges with screen sharing and stuff.

Thank you so much, i spent so much time on the dock, and yeah its dash to panel, i didnt know wayland didnt work too great with older laptops, honestly, i didnt encounter any problem at any point, maybe mine is newer. And im planning to change it, it is old, planning on getting a t470

Use it, don't succumb to any Arch pressure, unless you maintain Linux or something it's a waste of time, but if you are deep in Linux and want performance Arch is it. But for me I'm a money person so it's a waste of my time.

I am still a noob to linux tbh, do you still recommend it ?

Stick to noob friendly distro like mint, manjaro before you regret shooting yourself in the foot.

I've seen mint and used it a little, although not on my pc, i just want to try something more, something exiciting

Either of them is a fine option for your use case (frontend, Python).

Fedora is stable. Ubuntu just gets recommended more because it has a larger community and more beginner-focused guides. so it is often easier to find help when you are stuck.

Honestly, I would advise you not to overthink your choice. Whichever you choose, the Linux fundamentals you learn will transfer easily.

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking of getting a thinkpad and i heard they are the best for linux, whenever i give it a try i'll give you my feedback.
For now I am using WSL on my current laptop and getting myself familiar with the linux environment

Yes, Ubuntu is very beginner friendly.
There's plenty of support out there ..community, youtube tutorials, and more which makes learning easier.

It is also widely used on servers. so if you are aiming for roles like backend, DevOps, or cloud, starting with Ubuntu makes a lot of sense.

Starting with Ubuntu Desktop now makes moving to Ubuntu Server seamless ( same commands, package management (apt) and file structures). You just lose the GUI but your Linux knowledge transfers directly.

That said, Fedora is also a decent choice, so both are solid for getting started.

I am mainly doing front-end for now and alot of python and I don't plan on transitioning anytime soon. I've been doing some research on Ubuntu and tbh it is recommended alot, as it is said to be beginner friendly, I really want to use Fedora, but i don't want to screw up big time tbh, please what do you recommend ?

They are both great options.

KDE Plasma is very customizable and closer to Windows, but it can be overwhelming for beginners.

I would recommend Fedora Workstation (GNOME) to start with. It has fewer distractions and gives a better beginner experience. It also makes switching to Ubuntu Desktop later (if you ever want) much easier.

Hint : I personally use Ubuntu

I've been thinking of switching to linux from windows, i wanted to use Arch, but that seemed too complex as i am just starting. So I decided to use Fedora, but i'm stuck on what version of Fedora to use. So please senior devs in the forum what version do you recommend between KDE Plasma and Fedora Workstation. Diversify brother. You will thank me later. The competition is stiff out there. Become a polyglot😁. It might take you years but strive for it. Since you are familiar with Js, then learn: Svelte + sveltekit, Vue + nuxtjs and Solidjs among others. The above is enough to answer as a qualified full stack😁 but unfortunately in one language👀.

From the backend, you can learn something like Ruby(Rails), Rust(Axum, leptos, Rocket, Actix), php(Laravel, code igniter etc), Python(flask, Django or fast API), Go(Gin, gonic etc), Elixir(Phoenix), Node(Express + ejs or Nestjs). You can combine this with whatsoever database you like😁. Try and experiment with them🤤.

That's the difference. Also, be solid in your use of bash, Linux and Shell👀. You might want to add shellscript as an added advantage perhaps for scripting although you can achieve the same with python. If you don't want to be polyglot as in programming languages then you can be polyglot in frameworks by adding either desktop or mobile frameworks. React Native comes to mind since you are already familiar with React or you learn Dart or Kivy etc., as for Desktop, you can use Electron or Python Guis or .Net🤕.

With the above, you can diversify anywhere in tech. Systems, Backend, Data analysis, Gui, CGI, Blockchain(Rust, Js, Ts and Python), Desktop, Mobile etc... Cyber security will require a different stack but with your knowledge of python, and shell; you will just add to it: Selenium, Docker, C(not necessary though) along with the rest.

I’ve been grinding as a frontend developer for a while, and I’m at that stage where I’m asking myself: am I actually mid-level, or still junior?

Here’s what I bring to the table:

Promoted from intern to intermediate frontend dev at my current role

Solid with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Tailwind, and Vite

Comfortable with Framer Motion for clean animations and UI polish

Experienced building CRUD apps and working with RESTful APIs

Built an estate management website with an admin dashboard (CRUD + API integration)

Confident with Git/GitHub and deployment on Vercel

Have a portfolio site (currently revamping it)


What I’d love some advice on:

From this experience, do I stand a chance at mid-level roles, or should I still apply as junior?

What gaps should I focus on before confidently branding myself as “mid-level”?

Any tips on how to stand out more (projects, networking, open source, etc.)?


I don’t want to overshoot and get crushed in interviews 😅 but I also don’t want to undersell myself if I’m ready for more responsibility.
