Only a quarter of students who are raped reported their attack to the police, according to a new survey.
New research suggests that sexual violence and harassment is widespread at universities, and that many students lack knowledge around consent.
Nearly half of the female students (49%) said they were inappropriately touched but only 5% reported it to anyone in authority - including the police or staff at their university.
Only 8% of all students who say they have received unwanted sexual behaviours, such as inappropriate touching, explicit messages, cat-calling, being followed, or being forced into sex or sexual acts, have reported it.
In comparison, the Office for National Statistics in 2018 said less than 20% of all victims of sexual assaults report them to police.
Almost a third of incidents (30%) took place on campus and more than half of all respondents (53%) said they have faced sexual harassment or violence from a fellow student.
The survey results suggest many students still lack understanding around consent and what constitutes sexual harassment and violence.
More than half (56%) of students say they have experienced unwanted sexual behaviours at university but only 15% of those realised that constitutes sexual harassment.

The former Vatican treasurer has been found guilty of abusing teenage choir boys by a court in Melbourne.
Cardinal George Pell was actually convicted of five offences in December last year, but details of the verdicts were kept secret for fear they would prejudice a second trial he was facing. Those charges have now been dropped.
Cardinal Pell was in court to hear the judge's ruling that suppression order was lifted.
He was found guilty of sexually abusing 13-year-old choir boys 22 years years ago in the priests' sacristy of St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne, where he was archbishop at the time.
He was convicted of abusing two boys whom he had caught drinking sacramental wine in a rear room of a Melbourne cathedral in late 1996, as hundreds of worshippers were streaming out of Sunday services.

Kim Jong Un has arrived in Hanoi ahead of a second summit with Donald Trump.

The North Korean leader arrived in the Vietnamese capital after a journey that saw him cross the border with China on his personal train, before transferring to a limousine at Dong Dang railway station.

His US counterpart is on route from Washington in Air Force One and is expected to arrive in a few hours time.

The talks between the two come eight months after their historic summit in Singapore, which was the first meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

The pair are due to sit down together for dinner on Wednesday, before more formal discussions get under way on Thursday.

Despite Kim's Singapore pledge to work towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, there has been little real movement.

President Trump however appears upbeat about the prospects for the Hanoi talks, telling reporters he expected "a very tremendous summit".

And in a tweet on Monday, he stressed the benefits to North Korea if it gave up its nuclear weapons.

"With complete Denuclearisation, North Korea will rapidly become an Economic Powerhouse," he said.

"Without it, just more of the same. Chairman Kim will make a wise decision!"
