Despite admitting that he has wasted the last two years of his career, Mario Balotelli believes he can still win the Ballon d’Or someday. The former Inter striker, who also insisted that he is determined to fight for his place at Liverpool next season, endured a frustrating first season at Anfield before flopping back at AC Milan last season, not helped by injury issues. But Balotelli remains positive about the future and claimed that he still has hope that he will live up to the early potential he showed in his career which earned him a lucrative move to Manchester City. “I can do so much more but it takes time,” he told Corriere della Sera. “On a scale of one to 10, I have stopped at five but I’ll work my way to 10 slowly because that is where I want to get to. “I want to win the Ballon d’Or, although I realise that the last two years of my career haven’t helped and have kept me closer to five than 10. I know that my goal is rather high and people may laugh. “But I know that I haven’t done everything I could do to become the best. The important thing is that I have understood that and it isn’t too late. I don’t want to end my career with regret about not having done everything possible [to achieve my goals]. “Until two years ago, I was happy with what I had done, felt good and had no drive to improve. I thought I’d done enough but now I’ve started to work seriously but the results haven’t arrived. I have changed in the last two years. “Now, I hope my future is at Liverpool. Milan decided not to keep me but I’m sure there will come a time when Mario’s back again.” Balotelli also went on to suggest that there are two very different parts to his personality, one of which has been turned into something of a caricature, which has been played up in the media. “Who is the real Balotelli? He is a football player,” he continued. “Mario is something else. It is easier to describe Balotelli than Mario. Balotelli is a character created by the newspapers, judged by those who watch him play on the field. “Mario is another matter entirely. He is a 25-year-old guy who tries his best to live a normal life. He likes spending time with his daughter when possible, with friends, with family, with the PlayStation. If we spent a week together, you would see.” Touching upon the racism he has suffered throughout his career, the 25-year-old confessed that it does hurt him deeply, so much so that he lost interest in representing the country of his birth. “Some people insult me because I’m Balotelli and some do it for other [racist] reasons,” added the striker. “Two years ago, I called my agent and told him: ‘Mino, I don’t want to play for the national team.’ That’s not right. “I was born in Italy, raised in Italy, have never been to Ghana [the country of his parents], although I will go. As far as the law is concerned, I am Italian. Then I’m insulted by people saying there are no Italian n*****s. “If I had known what it would be like, I don’t know if I would have played for Italy. I know it may only be a few stupid people but I’m not a robot either, these things make you suffer.” |

Watford have been forced to turn down a £37.5million bid from Shanghai SIPG for Odion Ighalo – because the striker does not want to go to China. The Hornets were left reeling by the massive bid for the Nigeria international - who scored 17 goals last season – with Shanghai's ex-England boss Sven Goran Eriksson keen to land him. It is the second time in a year that the 27-year-old has rejected interest from the Chinese Super League. Last summer, he rejected a £300,000-a-week deal with Qinhuangdao-based Hebei China Fortune, and instead went on to sign a five-year deal with his Hertfordshire club. Ighalo said in February: “I prayed about it, and God said it was not for me, no matter how much money it was. "I knew God would direct me. “When I said I don’t want to go, they offered me more money — almost £300,000 a week. I told them it’s not about the money.” Watford’s official position - after Ighalo’s strike-partner and Hornets captain Troy Deeney signed a new five-year deal to ward off champions Leicester - is that none of their strikers are for sale. But Mirror Sport understands they had no alternative but to pass up the huge fee for Ighalo after he insisted he wanted to remain in the Premier League. The player was bought for a package totalling just £3m from Spanish club Granada two years ago. He has been capped 11 times by his country and has netted a total of 37 goals in 63 appearances for Watford. Deeney signed a new, double-your-money deal after accepting the club had no intention of selling him to Leicester, despite offers totalling around £25million. The improved contract is his fourth in as many seasons. Watch — Watford supporter pranks Gooners after shock FA Cup win: Watford would have been forced to hand over a 25 per cent of the fee to the 28-year-old's former club Walsall had they sold him. They were also of the belief that they would have been helping a direct rival as they do not believe Leicester will repeat their title-winning heroics of last season, with the Premier League’s heavyweights strengthening substantially. Deeney, whose decision mens he will miss out on his dream of playing in the Champions League next season, said: “This club really means business and I want to be part of this. “I’ve listened carefully to everything the club has had to say to me recently. We’ve talked things through in a sensible way – and it’s helped me fully deal with lots of my own thoughts. “When you’re right in the middle of something, maybe you take it for granted how quickly things are moving forward. I don’t think I’ve done that; but by talking it over it’s clear that Watford isn’t ever going to settle for second-best – and that’s how I want to feel about my career so it works for me.” |

Liverpool have rejected a £25million bid for Christian Benteke from Crystal Palace, according to reports. The Liverpool Echo claim that the south London club made a formal offer on Friday for the 25-year-old but Jurgen Klopp’s side are holding out for a £30million fee for the former Aston Villa striker. The Belgium forward, who is currently on international duty at Euro 2016, joined the Merseysiders for £32.5million last summer and Liverpool want to recoup most of their outlay. It is said that Klopp does not see the targetman in his future plans, which has resulted in his representatives talking to Palace officials this week. As reported by Football Insider , Benteke has already agreed verbal terms with the south London club . Benteke scored 42 goals in 89 appearances during his time at Villa, but that form dipped after his big-money move to Anfield, which saw him net on nine occasions in 29 games in all competitions for the club. Benteke is just one in a long list of failed forwards at Anfield since the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona in 2014 and despite having four years left to run on his current deal, he too could be on his way out of the club this summer. The Reds are expected to accept a bid in the region of £30million but it remains unclear if the Eagles will be willing to match that valuation to secure the former Genk stars services. |
