And where da sh! t is Buhari? Where is the change u promised? Abi e dey with conductor....? |
President Muhammadu Buhari last night met with former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and members of his group, during which they asked for protection owing to their loyalty to their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Gbajabiamila and his supporters in the House have been at loggerheads Hon. Yakubu Dogara since the latter defied the APC to emerge Speaker of the lower legislative chamber. Gbajabiamila led a 30-man strong delegation, which included Hon. Mohammed Monguno who was defeated in the race for the post of Deputy Speaker of the House by Hon. Yusuff Lasun. Senator Ahmed Lawan and Gbajabiamila had been picked by the ruling APC as the candidates for the Senate presidency and speakership of the House but lost the elections to Senator Bukola Saraki and Dogara, respectively, who got the backing of lawmakers of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the leadership race. Senator Abu Ibrahim, representing Katsina South senatorial district, was the only senator in the delegation last night. They arrived at the first lady’s wing of the Presidential Villa, venue of the meeting, at 9.30p.m. and were joined by Buhari at 9.45p.m. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was also at the meeting. The meeting was called to explore ways to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis in the House and was the second one held by Buhari in recent days with National Assembly lawmakers. He was reported to have met Senator Lawan and his supporters a few days ago. However, he has studiously avoided any meetings with Saraki and Dogara who went against the wishes of the party to emerge principal officers of the National Assembly. A presidency source informed THISDAY that Gbajabiamila informed the president that they had been loyal to the party and yet had lost out in the leadership contest. They therefore solicited his support for protection as reward for their loyalty to APC. In response, Buhari was said to have assured them that the issues they had raised would be addressed at the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC scheduled for Friday. He told them that the issue of party supremacy would again be tabled at the meeting with a view to ensuring that the outstanding principal positions in the House are secured by the candidates nominated by the APC. Following his loss to Dogara, APC had in a letter to the Speaker, forwarded Gbajabiamila’s name to emerge Majority Leader of the House. Other nominees of the party included Hon. Ado Doguwa (North-West) as Deputy House Leader; Mohammed Monguno (North-East) as Chief Whip; and Pally Iriiase as Deputy Chief Whip. Last night’s meeting with Gbajabiamila and other APC House members was still ongoing at the time of this report. Public health physicians have called for more vigilance at the border posts in order to prevent a recurrence of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease in the country. The appeal is coming on the heels of the reported return of the disease in two West African countries of Liberia and Sierra Leone, last week. According to a member of the Ebola Prevention Committee in Nigeria, Dr. Oladoyin Odubanjo, the Federal Government needs to the strengthen the precautionary and screening methods in order to forestall a return of the disease. Odubanjo noted that proper screening of passengers for the viral disease was a major precautionary measure to prevent a similar scenario where by a Liberian-American diplomat, Patrick Sawyer, imported the disease into Nigeria in 2014. He said, “We must be on the watch out and learn from our neighbours. Liberia and Sierra Leone reportedly free of EVD are at present recording new cases. We must act now because we have abandoned the strict measures we put in place at the height of the outbreak. Nigeria must know that we cannot let our guards down until every single case of EVD in West Africa is over.” Another public health physician, Dr. Segun Agbaje, urged the authorities to be on the watch out for symptoms of the disease. He said, “The country’s health authorities need to be on the alert and take regular precautionary measures to avoid an outbreak. We had an outbreak in the first place because did not act on time. The new cases are the red flag, signifying that it is not yet Uhuru for Nigeria and the world.” Agbaje also stressed the need for hand washing and other hygienic practices, stating that they were key to getting rid of germs, bacteria and other viruses. According to him, hand-washing practice particularly reduces the risk of getting infections by more than 60 per cent.

During the demolition exercise, the traders were reportedly barred from entering the market to remove their goods from the shops Traders said that they met 'hoodlums' vandalising the market with bulldozers escorted by policemen and SARS operatives. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the market, Kanayo Okonkwo, told journalists at the scene that there was no notice to prepare the traders beforehand, adding, 'as it stands, we are in raining season. If it rains, it will spoil all our goods. That would take us back to square one. 'They didn't tell us anything. I don't know where they want us to go. We don't have other shops. Assuming they gave us some kind of notice, we would know what to do, we came today to sell but found a lock on the gate.' He added: 'We want to know why they vandalised a section of the market. 'If they have any issue within themselves, let them sort it out. We came here to look for daily bread, not to disturb anybody. If they really planned to develop the market, they should have at least informed us. The governor of Lagos State should come to our aid. If they want us to leave, we will do that. But they should do what is right,' he said. In front of the market gate was a banner with the inscription: Proposed Commercial Development of Mushin, Lagos. It was also written on the banner that Mushin Local Government in conjunction with a developer known as Total Value Integrated Services Limited is to commence building of a modern plaza market in place of the present stalls being demolished
