PoliticsOyo State Released N5.813bn Compensation To Over 900 Property Owners by DebiPaydotng(op): 7:01am On Apr 24
Oyo State Released N5.813 billion compensation to more than 900 property owners whose lands fall within the 110-kilometre circular road corridor.

The Oyo State Executive Council on Tuesday approved fresh financial commitments to accelerate infrastructure delivery, support affected citizens and cushion economic hardship for residents.

NaijaChoice News gathered that the decisions, taken at the meeting presided over by Governor Seyi Makinde, centre on the ongoing Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road and other priority projects.

Council released an additional N5.813 billion as compensation to more than 900 property owners whose lands fall within the 110-kilometre circular road corridor. The project, which encircles Ibadan, is designed to ease chronic traffic gridlock and open up new economic corridors in the state capital.

In a related move, the ExCo approved N3.981 billion for the reconstruction of the Okaka Junction–Otu–Igbojaiye–KAP Film Village Road. The sum, which covers bridge construction over the Otu and Ofiki rivers, brings the total project cost to N30.464 billion and will improve access to the fast-growing film hub in Oke-Ogun.

The council also voted N126.912 million to complete the Oyo State Christian Wing multipurpose hall, a project first started over 25 years ago during the administration of late Governor Lam Adesina. Officials say the facility will serve pilgrims and faith-based events once finished.

To further support workers and commuters, N710.382 million was approved for transportation subsidies under the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) programme. The funds will run from March to August 2026, extending relief amid rising transport costs.

In the same vein, the ExCo gave the nod for Oyo State to host the 2026 edition of the International Tourism Summit. The event is expected to build on gains from previous editions and showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage and investment potential to global audiences.

These approvals reflect the state government’s continued push to deliver tangible dividends of democracy, from road infrastructure to citizen welfare and tourism growth.

Residents in affected communities are expected to receive their compensation promptly, while contractors have been urged to fast-track work on the approved projects.

Crime$62,500 And €36,020 Fraud: Man Bags 30 Years Imprisonment In Lagos by DebiPaydotng(op): 9:00am On Mar 31
Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, has convicted and sentenced Lagos businessman Olumuyiwa Teniola Idowu and his company, Tennyvans Nigeria Limited, to a cumulative 30 years in prison.

The judgment, delivered on Monday, March 30, 2026, followed a six-count charge of stealing and failure to declare assets involving $62,500 and €36,020. NaijaChoice News reports that the offences, which date back to 2012 transactions, contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, and Section 27(3) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004.

One count alleged that Idowu and his company dishonestly converted $62,500, being payment for caterpillar parts belonging to Dutch businessman Rene Theodorous Johannes Brouwers of Brouwers USA Trucks and Parts.

Another count stated they converted €36,020 meant for the cost and shipping of a DAF truck, box trailer and two tippers, also property of the same complainant.

Idowu was first arraigned by the EFCC on November 27, 2024. He pleaded not guilty, leading to a full trial that lasted several months.

Prosecuting counsel E. S. Okongwu presented three witnesses and tendered 11 exhibits, all admitted by the court. Defence counsel Kehinde Olawumi called one witness.

In his ruling, Justice Ijelu held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. He found the defendants guilty as charged on all six counts.

The court sentenced Idowu to five years imprisonment on counts one to four, to run concurrently. He received another five years on counts five and six, with an option of N1 million fine on each of those counts, payable within six months.

The judge also ordered full restitution of the $62,500 and €36,020 to the nominal complainant within six months. Failure to pay the fines or make restitution will mean serving the full custodial terms.

Idowu has since been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

The conviction highlights the EFCC’s ongoing crackdown on economic crimes involving foreign business partners operating in Nigeria. Such cases continue to send a strong message to individuals and companies tempted to divert funds entrusted to them in legitimate transactions.

PoliticsPHOTOS: Sanwo-olu Distributes 20,000 Food Packs For Tinubu's 74 Birthday by DebiPaydotng(op): 9:32pm On Mar 29
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday distributed 20,000 food packs to residents across the state to mark President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 74th birthday.

The gesture reached communities in all 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas. Beneficiaries collected the packs at key points including the Chapel of Christ the Light and the Lagos State Central Mosque.

Sanwo-Olu described the distribution as a simple way to celebrate while supporting families during a difficult period. He shared the development in a statement monitored by NaijaChoice News.

In a personalised message to Lagosians, the governor reflected on President Tinubu’s leadership and the nation’s ongoing journey. He admitted the past months have not been easy but insisted progress is beginning to show.

Sanwo-Olu stressed that Lagos State continues to build on the solid foundation Tinubu laid as former governor. That legacy, he said, remains central to the state’s story today.

The food packs formed part of wider birthday activities. President Tinubu himself had earlier donated foodstuffs to orphanages in Lagos and Ogun States, a move that aligned with the governor’s outreach.

South-West governors also joined in the tributes, hailing Tinubu as a patriotic leader who continues to drive national development. The celebrations came as many Nigerians still grapple with the pains of ongoing economic reforms.

Sanwo-Olu’s initiative underscored the close political and developmental ties between Lagos and the presidency. It also highlighted efforts to ease hardship for ordinary citizens even as the state pushes infrastructure and economic projects.

Residents who received the packs expressed appreciation for the timely support. For many, it offered relief amid rising living costs.

Foreign AffairsOil Could Breach $200 A Barrel If Iran War Continues To June by DebiPaydotng(op): 10:20pm On Mar 28
Three more months of war in Iran could cause Brent crude oil prices to skyrocket, soaring past US$200 a barrel, a report by a global asset management firm warned on Friday.

The ongoing “Gulf War 3” is the key factor in deciding what direction the global economy will head in, the Macquire Group Ltd. said in a note to clients.

The report outlines two scenarios, the first with the war ending at the end of March and the second with the war continuing until the end of June.

In the first scenario, the group’s analysts expect oil prices to fall quickly, “albeit to levels still above those seen pre conflict.”

If the war begins to wind down soon, the economic costs will likely be relatively small, with global GDP growth to slow only a little relative to last year. It will take a while for energy markets to rebalance,” the note says.

The oil shock from the war is “already bigger than the peak in either of the 1970s oil shocks, or the first two Gulf Wars,” the note said.

With the Strait of Hormuz mostly closed, we estimate that around 13% of global oil production will be shut in by the end of March,” it added.

Amid the volatility of ceasefire proposal talks and Iran’s rejection of the U.S. proposal on Wednesday, the price has continued to fluctuate but is hovering around $90 as of this week, with the price breaching $100 on some days.

The global economy may just be able to weather the storm with the 1.2 billion barrels of oil in the strategic reserves of the member countries of the International Energy Agency, which includes Canada, as well as China’s own massive oil reserves, it said.

A prolonged conflict, however, could send oil prices skyrocketing past US$200 a barrel, the report said, adding that it would translate to a price of $US7 per gallon. Currently, the average price of gasoline at U.S. pumps is US$3.9 per gallon.

If the Strait were to stay closed for an extended period, prices would need to move high enough to destroy an historically large amount of global oil demand,” the report added.

If war continues for three more months, “that would see talk quickly turn to global recession, as the world experiences a substantial market risk off.”

This warning echoes one made by Iran’s military command, which said earlier this month that the world should be prepared for oil to hit US$200 a barrel, as more ships came under attack in the blockaded Gulf.

While “the market is still expecting President Trump to soon declare victory,” the Macquarie report said, there is “uncertainty about what victory looks like.

Given the recent attacks on energy infrastructure throughout the region, “there is a risk that prices may need to move significantly higher first to incentivise a near-term deal,” the report added.

BusinessMoniepoint Acquires Orda Africa For Restaurant Tech by DebiPaydotng(op): 8:33am On Mar 26
Moniepoint Acquires Orda Africa for Restaurant Tech

Moniepoint has acquired Orda Africa, a cloud-based restaurant management platform built for Nigerian food businesses. The deal brings Orda’s tools for orders, inventory, and operations directly into Moniepoint’s Moniebook platform, creating a single system tailored for restaurants, quick-service outlets, and food vendors.

NaijaChoice News reports that the acquisition, announced on March 23, covers Orda’s Nigerian operations and folds its team of about 25 specialists into Moniepoint. Orda, which already powers more than 1,000 restaurants and handled over 5.2 million transactions last year, will be rebranded as part of Moniebook for Restaurants.

Nigeria’s food service sector stands among the country’s fastest-growing industries. It employs millions and feeds millions more daily, yet many operators still rely on spreadsheets, manual stock counts, and separate apps for payments and sales. This fragmentation often limits their ability to scale or access credit when they need it most.

Orda was designed to fix exactly those headaches. Its platform handles point-of-sale transactions, real-time inventory tracking, automated reordering, staff scheduling, and branded microsites that let customers order directly. Moniepoint’s existing payment terminals and Microfinance Bank will now power seamless integration, including performance-based financing for qualifying businesses.

Restaurant owners will gain access to detailed reports on top-selling items, peak hours, and category performance, all in one dashboard. The combined solution also supports omnichannel orders from delivery platforms and walk-ins, while keeping everything reconciled automatically.

Moniepoint has spent the past decade building payment and business tools that help small and medium enterprises across Nigeria. With this move, the company is doubling down on the food sector, which analysts value at $50 billion continent-wide and project Nigeria’s share to reach $19.31 billion by 2030.

For food business owners in Lagos, Abuja, and beyond, the change means less time chasing paperwork and more time focusing on meals and customer experience. Moniepoint says the integration will roll out gradually, with existing Orda users migrating to the enhanced Moniebook environment.

The development reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem. As more restaurants seek digital tools to survive rising costs and fierce competition, solutions like this could help thousands of operators turn survival into sustainable growth.

Moniepoint’s broader vision remains financial happiness for African businesses and individuals. By embedding restaurant-specific features into its infrastructure, the company is betting that better tools today will unlock bigger opportunities for the sector tomorrow.

BusinessMiddle East War: Lessons For Nigeria From Gulf War Oil Windfall by DebiPaydotng(op): 2:43pm On Mar 23
by Emmanuella Anokam for News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

During the Gulf War which took place between Aug. 2, 1990 and Feb. 28, 1991, Nigeria reportedly earned an oil windfall of approximately 12.2 billion dollars to 12.4 billion dollars in additional oil revenue.

The 1990–1991 Gulf War was an international conflict triggered by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, driven by oil disputes and debt.

The war led to a surge in oil prices, and the extra revenue was generated between 1990 and 1991 under the administration of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida; however, records show the funds were not effectively utilised.

The 1994 Pius Okigbo Panel, set up to investigate the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), found that 12.2 billion dollars of the 12.4 billion dollars windfall was spent on non-essential, “off-budget” projects and was unaccounted for’’.

Interestingly, a similar situation has unfolded in the ongoing Middle East crisis.

This raises the question of how Nigeria could benefit significantly from the current windfall—a surge in global crude oil prices triggered by escalating regional tensions.

In retrospect, the coordinated military strikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iranian strategic infrastructure on Feb. 28 triggered retaliatory attacks across the Gulf region.

The escalation injected significant geopolitical risk into global oil markets, pushing prices sharply above pre-crisis levels.

The situation got worsened with Iran’s threat to attack ships transiting through the Strait of Hormuz through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supply passes.

Experts say the disruption to shipping through this narrow corridor is affecting global energy markets.

Against this background, Nigerians are upbeat that with Nigeria’s 2026 budget benchmark pegged at 64.9 dollars per barrel, the current international crude oil price hovering between 92 dollars and 100 dollars presents a major revenue opportunity for the country.

Experts say Nigeria’s geographic advantage allows it to benefit from higher global oil prices even when Gulf supply routes are disrupted.

They say Nigeria stands to benefit from a significant fiscal windfall as oil prices rise well above the 2026 budget benchmark of 64.9 dollars per barrel, which also assumes production of 1.84 million barrels per day and an exchange rate of N1, 400 per dollar.

In his submission, Dr Billy Gillis-Harry, National President, Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), cautioned that such windfalls must be properly managed to avoid repeating past mistakes associated with poor utilisation of excess oil earnings.

Gillis-Harry urged the Federal Government to invest any windfall from rising crude oil prices into refineries rehabilitation and strategic sectors of the economy to ensure long-term national benefits.

He said Nigeria could benefit significantly from the current surge in global crude oil prices triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Gillis-Harry recalled that a similar situation occurred during the Gulf War in the 90s when the country reportedly earned over 12 billion dollars in oil windfall from higher oil prices but did not fully convert the earnings into long-term economic gains.

He explained that Nigeria should save a significant portion of the extra revenue in institutions like the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority, which manages the country’s sovereign wealth fund.

“The government should channel the additional revenue into productive investments that can generate long-term value for the country.

“We have a sovereign wealth fund that should be strengthened; our refineries that have remained largely comatose need to be revived, and the gas revolution being promoted by the government should also receive stronger funding.”

Gillis-Harry said that while saving excess revenue was important, investing the funds in viable economic ventures capable of generating additional income for the country would be more beneficial.

Speaking on the implications of the U.S.-Israel tensions with Iran on global oil prices, the PETROAN president said geopolitical conflicts in major oil producing regions often disrupted global energy supply chains and pushed crude oil prices higher.

He said that although Nigeria was an oil-producing country, it still felt the impact of international price fluctuations because crude oil was traded and priced globally.

Domestic refineries must purchase crude oil at international market prices.

“Crude oil is priced internationally; anybody that wants to buy crude oil in Nigeria will buy it at the international price.

“That is why you see fluctuations even in local refining operations
.’’

Gillis-Harry cited the operations of the Dangote Refinery, explaining that the refinery purchases crude oil based on the international dollar price, even when payment was made in naira equivalent at the prevailing exchange rate.

“Nigeria cannot simply allocate all its crude oil production to domestic refineries because a large portion of the production is tied to joint venture agreements with international oil companies such as Shell plc. and Chevron Corporation.

These companies invest in the exploration and production process, so crude oil ownership and allocation are shared under existing partnership arrangements,” he said.

The expert urged the government to focus on expanding Nigeria’s crude oil production capacity to about 4 million barrels per day to meet both domestic refining needs and international obligations.

Sharing similar sentiments, a renowned economist, Dr Chijioke Ekechukwu, argued that Nigeria could have recorded a major economic windfall from the current surge in global crude oil prices if the country’s crude oil production was operating at its full installed capacity.

Ekechukwu, Group Managing Director/CEO, Bristol Investment Limited, said Nigeria would have hit an economic jackpot if its crude oil production had reached its installed capacity or quota under the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

According to Ekechukwu, Nigeria is currently producing far below its potential as an oil producing nation, thereby limiting the benefits it can derive from the current rise in global crude prices, triggered by tensions involving the U.S. and Iran.

The economist, however, warned that while government revenue may increase due to higher crude prices, the average Nigerian is already bearing the burden of rising petroleum product costs.

He said the surge in fuel prices had triggered increases in diesel costs, transportation fares and production expenses across multiple sectors of the economy.

“The rising energy costs are already pushing up prices of goods and services, thereby worsening the cost of living pressures on citizens.

“Nigerians are already experiencing high fuel costs, high diesel prices, rising transportation costs and increased production expenses.

These increases are translating into higher prices of goods and services’, meaning the purchasing power of the average Nigerian is declining rapidly,” he said.

Ekechukwu added that although Nigeria’s treasury would experience some revenue boost from the high crude prices, the gains would be significantly lower than what the country could have realised if crude oil production were at optimal levels.

Deserving no less attention, another economic expert, Mr Yusha’u Aliyu, warned that the ongoing conflict could have far-reaching consequences for both regional and global economies, particularly in the energy sector.

Aliyu said the war, largely centered on regime change, had also exposed the enormous cost of modern technological warfare.

He noted that the deployment of advanced military systems comes with significant economic implications.

According to him, beyond the battlefield, the conflict has already distorted global production and distribution of petroleum products, leading to rising energy prices.

He explained that Iran, a prominent member of the OPEC, played a critical role in the Middle East political economy and controls strategic transport corridors vital to global trade.

The situation, he noted, had implications for the efficiency of international trade and the stability of global oil supply.

“Rising pump prices could continue to trigger a wider adjustment in the prices of goods and services, as energy costs typically have a multiplier effect on the broader economy.

The instability in global oil supply is also increasing production costs across energy value chains, which ultimately reduces consumers’ purchasing power,’’ he said

Aliyu, however, said Nigeria could record increased oil revenues if crude prices remained above the benchmark contained in the country’s 2026 fiscal projections.

In spite of this potential windfall, the economic experts advise the Federal Government to prioritise advance domestic crude supply to local refineries at pre-war prices.

They recommend using additional oil revenues to stabilise the Forex market and cushion the economy against external shocks.

EducationKwara Gov Rewards Debate Champions With N2m Each by DebiPaydotng(op): 1:58pm On Mar 10
KWARA GOV REWARDS DEBATE CHAMPIONS WITH N2M EACH, HAILS THEM AS NATIONAL AMBASSADORS

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Monday hosted five junior secondary school debaters at the Government House and showered them with cash rewards for their back-to-back victories at the international and national levels.

The students – Lawal Maryam Kikeloma, Jatto Rahmatallah Onize, Paul Unity, Fatimah AbdulRahman Thaini and Priscilla Aremu Temilayo – are pupils under the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

As previously reported by NaijaChoice News, the Kwara team first stormed Malaysia in December 2025 and won the International Junior Secondary School Debate Championship, beating participants from 16 countries across Asia, Africa and Europe. They became the first African team to lift the trophy and also carted home the Best Behaved Team award.

Shortly after that Malaysian feat, the same set of debaters retained the Nigerian Presidential School Debate trophy in Lagos, a title Kwara has now held for four straight years.

True to his tradition of celebrating excellence, Governor AbdulRazaq gave each of the five students N2 million and another N500,000 to each of their tutors. The cash is on top of the N3 million already saved by SUBEB for every student’s trip to Malaysia.

In a statement issued after the colourful reception, which was attended by members of the State House of Assembly, cabinet members, local government chairmen and parents of the champions, the governor said:

“Today in Ilorin, I hosted our schoolchildren who recently won the International Junior Secondary School Debate Championship in Malaysia. Shortly after the Malaysia feat, they also participated in the Nigerian Presidential School Debate in Lagos, where they again emerged champions.

“The Kwara debaters are Lawal Maryam Kikeloma, Jatto Rahmatallah Onize, Paul Unity, Fatimah AbdulRahman Thaini, and Priscilla Aremu Temilayo.

As is my tradition to encourage excellence and scholarship, I awarded them N2m each and another N500,000 each for their tutors. They are worthy ambassadors of Nigeria and Kwara State. We are truly proud of their achievements.”

The governor vowed to sustain massive investment in the education sector.

“We will continue to invest heavily in the education sector, such as in the school infrastructure, curricula, and support for the civil servants who are behind the turnaround of our education in the state. We are glad to be here now; we couldn’t have dreamt of this seven years ago when salaries were not even being paid.

“A lot of work still needs to be done. We will continue to do what we need to do to make sure that the standards get better year in, year out.

I say congratulations to the parents and teachers of these champions for their hard work and for giving the children the right values that prepared them for the feats.”

SUBEB Chairman Prof. Sheu Raheem Adaramaja and one of the students, Jatto Rahmatallah Onize, thanked the governor for creating an enabling environment that made the historic wins possible.

The event has further boosted the image of Kwara as an emerging education hub in Nigeria, with residents already describing the young champions as “our own global stars.

HealthHEFAMAA Cracks Down On Quackry In Ojo Lagos by DebiPaydotng(op): 5:38am On Mar 03
The Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) is pushing its fight against fake doctors and illegal clinics right into the heart of Lagos communities, with a fresh sensitisation drive now hitting Ojo Local Government Area. NaijaChoice News report

At the recent town hall meeting and awareness campaign held in Ojo, residents were told in clear terms: stop risking your life with unregistered “mushroom” facilities. The Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. Abiola Idowu, who was represented by Deputy Director of Health Education, Mrs. Oladunni Omonike, hammered on the message that every Lagosian must take full responsibility for their health by patronising only licensed and accredited providers.

Our advice to Lagosians is simple: they should patronise only registered, government-approved facilities for their healthcare needs,” Omonike quoted Dr. Idowu as saying. She explained that when a facility is properly registered with HEFAMAA, the government knows who they are and can hold them accountable if anything goes wrong. “But if people patronise unregistered or mushroom facilities, it becomes difficult to intervene or protect them,” she warned.

The campaign, which has already covered 19 local government areas across the state, is designed to bring regulatory awareness straight to the people. Residents are now being taught how to spot genuine health centres using official registration insignia, the HEFAMAA logo and scannable QR codes displayed at approved facilities.

Omonike revealed that public response has been massive, with turnout beating expectations in many areas. “In some places, we expected about 200 facilities but attendance exceeded that number. We even had to get more chairs,” she said, adding that the high level of questions and engagement shows residents are finally waking up to the dangers.

The increased awareness is already yielding results. More members of the public are reporting suspicious operations, allowing HEFAMAA to move faster. “I cannot give an exact figure, but we have shut down more than five facilities already this year, and we are only in February. Even yesterday, we sealed one,” Omonike disclosed, stressing that the agency’s enforcement is now swifter and stronger than ever.

Providing deeper insight into the agency’s work, HEFAMAA’s Chief Nutrition Officer, Mr. Richard Olusanya, traced the body’s roots back to its establishment in 2006 specifically to regulate hospitals, clinics and maternity homes across Lagos. He insisted that only qualified and licensed practitioners – registered doctors or nurses – should head any medical establishment.

We cannot tolerate scenarios where a single person dabbles in ophthalmology, dentistry, and general medicine – that’s a gateway to quackery and patient harm,” Olusanya stated firmly. He added that the agency carries out routine inspections every six months to check staffing, equipment standards and environmental safety, while warning that small clinics are not meant to operate like full hospitals offering 24-hour comprehensive services.

Olusanya urged all facility owners to display their registration certificates prominently so patients can verify legitimacy at a glance.

The ongoing statewide exercise is part of the Lagos State Government’s bigger push for quality healthcare under the #AGreaterLagosRising agenda. HEFAMAA has consistently maintained zero tolerance for quackery, sealing dozens of illegal outfits in recent years to protect unsuspecting residents from harm.

Lagosians have been advised to always verify any health facility through official channels before seeking treatment. The message from Ojo is loud and clear: your health is your wealth – don’t gamble it with quacks.

PoliticsGov Abiodun Pledges Completion Of St Sebastian Cathedral by DebiPaydotng(op): 9:23pm On Feb 13
Gov Abiodun Pledges Completion of St Sebastian Cathedral as Lasting Tribute to Late Mama Lucia Onabanjo

In a moving ceremony that brought together political heavyweights, traditional rulers, and the faithful, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Friday paid a stirring tribute to the late Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, describing her as a woman whose life was a shining example of quiet service, deep faith, strong moral values, and total commitment to family and community. NaijaChoice News report.

The Funeral Mass for the 100-year-old matriarch, widow of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, was held at the historic St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, Odo-Egbo, Ijebu-Ode.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the revered Iya-Ijo passed on peacefully on January 12, 2026, at the ripe age of 100, leaving behind an indelible mark on the state and the church she served with distinction.

Speaking during the solemn service, Governor Abiodun, who was joined by former governors Chief Olusegun Osoba, Senator Gbenga Daniel, and Senator Ibikunle Amosun, among other dignitaries, reflected on the exemplary life of Mama Onabanjo.

“We paid tribute to the late Mama Lucia Onabanjo, celebrating a life defined by quiet service, deep faith, strong moral values, and unwavering support for family and community,” the governor said.

“At her Funeral Mass held at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, we reflected on her humility, discipline, and the enduring influence she exercised not through public office, but through character, conviction, and moral guidance.”

The governor noted that Mama Onabanjo was not just the wife of a former governor; she was a pillar of strength who stood firmly by her husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, even in the most trying moments of his political career, including his detention following the 1983 military coup.

“In honour of her legacy as the Iya-Ijo of the church and a steadfast pillar behind public leadership in Ogun State, we pledged our government’s support for the completion of the cathedral project. This, we affirmed, will stand as a lasting tribute to her life of service, faith, and commitment to the church,” Abiodun declared to thunderous applause from the congregation.

He added that Mama Onabanjo exemplified the vital role women play in shaping society through resilience, ethical standards, and quiet leadership.

“She was a devoted wife and mother who stood firmly beside her husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, even in the most challenging moments. Her life remains an inspiration, and her values will continue to guide generations to come,” the governor stressed.

In his homily, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi described the late Mama as a “silent achiever” whose quiet contributions to her husband’s administration, the church, and the larger society would continue to inspire future generations.

The cathedral, which Mama Onabanjo served as Iya-Ijo until her passing, is now set to receive full state government backing for its completion – a fitting memorial to a woman who gave her all in the service of God and humanity.

As the remains of the late matriarch were laid to rest, many in Ogun State and beyond agreed that a great tree has fallen, but her fruits – in the form of strong family values, faith, and selfless service – will continue to nourish the land for years to come.

May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

NaijaChoice News report.

The young scholar, a student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, who served as the One-Day Governor of Lagos State, was accompanied by her cabinet members, including One-Day Deputy Governor Miss Awoyemi Dorcas and One-Day Secretary to the State Government Miss Salami Jumai.

Describing the annual Spelling Bee as a cherished legacy of the Ministry, Commissioner Alli-Balogun urged the young ambassador and her team to remain good representatives of their schools, families, and communities. He stressed that the future belongs to dedicated and focused students.

“As a State, we are to nurture future leaders and build character. In the same vein, our parents must also not relent in playing their roles; they must continue to model and mirror godly conduct and mentor their children in the right ways to portray good values,” the Commissioner stated during the warm reception.

Alli-Balogun seized the opportunity to brief the One-Day Governor on the giant strides of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in the education sector. He highlighted increased participation of Lagos pupils in local and international competitions, massive recruitment of teachers, and other transformative initiatives. He encouraged the students to arm themselves with accurate information so they can effectively serve as ambassadors of the government’s good works.

The Commissioner specially commended the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) for sustaining the Spelling Bee programme since its inception in 2001, noting that it has consistently nurtured academic excellence, self-confidence, and leadership skills among young Lagosians.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, praised parents, teachers, school administrators, organisers, sponsors, and all stakeholders for their unwavering support towards youth development.

She explained that the One-Day Governor initiative is intentionally designed to expose young people to governance, leadership, and public service, inspiring them to embrace excellence, responsibility, and active civic engagement from an early age.

The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District II, Mr. Sanni Omotayo Layemo, expressed delight at the students’ outstanding performance. He assured them of the district’s commitment through principals and teachers to their overall development and urged the One-Day Governor and her cabinet not to relent in their aspirations to become professionals of repute.

Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, Director-General of the OEQA, acknowledged the intense competition and the winners’ resilience and hard work. He described the students’ tour of top government offices — which began with an evening dinner hosted by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, on Sunday, February 8, 2026 — as an eye-opening experience.

“Laptops were presented to the winners to support their educational journey,” Dr. Ogunmuyiwa revealed, while congratulating Miss Etiyemonu and encouraging other students across the state to draw inspiration from her success. He expressed confidence that the experience would ignite a lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and academic excellence.

The Spelling Bee, established in 2001 by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (now Nigeria’s First Lady) through her New Era Foundation, remains one of Lagos State’s most impactful educational programmes. It reaches pupils and students in public primary and secondary schools across all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, promoting literacy, confidence, and healthy academic rivalry.

The high-profile visit ended with photo sessions, warm interactions, and words of encouragement from senior officials, including the Chairman of the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, and other top stakeholders.

Miss Esther Etiyemonu’s remarkable achievement continues to inspire thousands of Lagos students, proving that with focus, hard work, and the right support, every child in the Centre of Excellence can soar to great heights.

PoliticsOgun Govt Unveils ₦1bn Ai-powered Classroom At Remo Secondary School by DebiPaydotng(op): 3:39pm On Feb 08
In a bold move to revolutionize education in Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art 900-seater AI-powered digital classroom complex at Remo Secondary School in Sagamu, valued at a whopping ₦1 billion. The initiative, revealed during the school’s 80th anniversary celebration, underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to equipping Nigerian youths with cutting-edge skills for the digital age. NaijaChoice News report.

The ultra-modern facility, designed to foster interactive learning through artificial intelligence, will serve as a hub for smart education, building on existing innovations like the school’s resource centre and fully equipped robotics laboratory. Speaking at the event, Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his government’s dedication to technology-driven education, stating, “This ultra-modern facility is designed to equip our students with the skills required to thrive in the 21st-century knowledge economy.”

This announcement comes on the heels of Ogun State’s groundbreaking launch of OgunLEARN in January 2026 – Nigeria’s first AI-powered teaching and learning platform aimed at bridging educational resource gaps. Rolled out in select secondary schools including Remo Secondary, Abeokuta Grammar School, and Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, OgunLEARN provides virtual classrooms, interactive tools, and personalized learning resources, enabling teachers to deliver lessons more effectively and students to access global-standard content regardless of location.

Beyond the digital classroom, the Abiodun administration has pledged an additional ₦100 million to bolster Remo Secondary’s infrastructure, with ₦50 million to be disbursed immediately. The funds will support ongoing projects, ensuring at least one major initiative is completed before the end of the governor’s tenure. Recent upgrades include the remodelling of science laboratories to international standards and the comprehensive rehabilitation of both boys’ and girls’ hostels, enhancing safety, comfort, and overall student welfare.

Remo Secondary School, established in 1946 as one of Ogun State’s flagship institutions, holds a cherished place in the nation’s educational heritage. The 80th anniversary festivities highlighted the school’s enduring legacy of excellence, with Governor Abiodun commending the Old Students Association (REMOOSA) for their pivotal role in sustaining its standards. “We recognise Remo Secondary School as a heritage institution,” he noted, urging current students to “embrace learning with passion, uphold integrity, and continue the proud legacy handed down through generations.”

Education stakeholders have hailed the developments as a game-changer for public schooling in Nigeria. Mr. Adewale Adeyemi, President of the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), described the AI integration as “a visionary step that positions Ogun ahead of the curve in Africa’s tech revolution.” He praised the platform’s potential to democratize quality education, especially in underserved areas, and called on other states to emulate the model.

The project aligns with Ogun State’s broader ISO 9001:2015-certified education reforms, which have seen massive investments in infrastructure and teacher training since 2019. With over 1,000 schools revamped and digital tools deployed across the state, Abiodun’s administration aims to produce graduates ready for the Fourth Industrial Revolution – from AI coding to robotics and data analytics.

As Nigeria grapples with youth unemployment and the digital divide, initiatives like these at Remo Secondary offer a beacon of hope. For students in Sagamu and beyond, the promise of AI classrooms isn’t just about gadgets; it’s about unlocking opportunities in a knowledge economy where innovation is the ultimate currency.

PoliticsLagos DSVA Empowers Safeguarding Officers In Fight Against Child Abuse by DebiPaydotng(op): 5:42am On Feb 07
In a bold move to fortify the frontlines against domestic and sexual violence, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) organized a pivotal Capacity Building Workshop for Safeguarding and Child Protection Officers on February 4, 2026, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI). The event, which drew participants from various schools and communities, underscored the state’s unwavering commitment to shielding children from harm and equipping educators with essential tools to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). NaijaChoice News report.

Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of DSVA, kicked off the workshop with a stirring welcome address, praising the attendees for their dedication to upholding children’s rights and well-being. “This workshop is crucial in bolstering your ability to spot risks, respond effectively to safeguarding issues, and enforce child protection laws,” she said. Vivour-Adeniyi reiterated Lagos State’s resolve to eradicate domestic and sexual violence through robust policies, emphasizing that success hinges on well-trained officers. She urged participants to immerse themselves in the sessions and implement the insights in their daily environments.

The workshop featured four insightful sessions led by seasoned experts. First up was Mrs. Atinuke Odukoya, Executive Director of the Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN), who provided an overview of SGBV. She delved into safeguarding practices, forms of violence, and the critical difference between abuse and discipline. Participants learned to recognize criminal acts, threats, and emotional distress in pupils, with a strong emphasis on documentation. Odukoya defined SGBV as gender-based discrimination and violence, outlining its causes—like poverty, insecurity, lack of justice, ignorance, unemployment, substance abuse, and learned behaviors from parents—and its devastating consequences, including trauma, stigmatization, and impacts on mental and physical health.

Drawing from recent data, Odukoya noted alarming trends in Nigeria. As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the Federal Government recorded over 10,326 GBV cases between January and September 2025 alone, with 2,444 survivors accessing recovery centers. This marks a significant rise from previous years, with physical violence affecting 28% of women, sexual violence 12%, and emotional violence 10%, according to a 2026 systematic review. She called on teachers to vigilantly monitor children, as their future depends on such oversight, and to break the silence that perpetuates violence.

The second session, facilitated by child protection expert Mr. Yakubu Jubril, zeroed in on Safeguarding and Child Protection Policies and the duties of Designated Safeguarding and Child Protection Officers (SCPDO). Jubril offered foundational insights into these policies, urging teachers to grasp and apply them effectively. He reminded educators of their social contract with students, highlighting shared responsibilities among children, families, government, and teachers. Key principles discussed included protection from harm, non-discrimination, prioritizing the child’s best interest, safety, consultation, and transparency. Notably, appointing an SCPDO is mandatory in Lagos schools, with the role elected from peers. Jubril outlined the officer’s responsibilities and stressed the need for prompt reporting and evidence collection to secure justice in SGBV cases.

Mr. Adewusi Damilare, Head of Community Engagement at DSVA, handled the third session on referral pathways and support services. He traced the evolution of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) to the current agency, revealing 26 Family Care Units statewide with trained police for SGBV handling. Damilare spotlighted free legal and psychosocial aid for survivors, asserting no excuse for staying in abusive settings. He detailed DSVA case officers’ roles, response protocols, and 24/7 toll-free lines. Emphasizing collaboration with stakeholders like the Ministries of Education and Justice, media, and NGOs, he advised discreet handling of disclosures, attentive listening, and viewing child protection as a collective duty.

The final session, led by Tech Societal expert Mr. Gabriel Odunsi, tackled safe internet use for schoolchildren. Citing a Nigerian Communications Commission survey, he revealed that 23% of 11–16-year-olds download music online, 48% study digitally, and a staggering 97% face sexual advances virtually. Odunsi flagged risks like cyberbullying, grooming, harmful content, privacy breaches, and scams. He advocated teaching responsible online habits, establishing safety rules, and fostering open communication without punishment.

The workshop wrapped up with expressions of gratitude to DSVA and well-wishes for safe travels home. This initiative aligns with DSVA’s ongoing efforts, including recent trainings for guidance counselors, customary court presidents, and content creators on child protection, as per the agency’s latest activities. With Nigeria grappling with rising SGBV—evidenced by a 20% complaint surge in June 2025 and persistent low conviction rates—such programs are vital in building a safer society.

Delivering a goodwill message, Mrs. Aderonke Oyelakin, Lagos State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, highlighted the workshop’s role in preventing and addressing child protection challenges. She stressed teachers’ vital position in safeguarding Lagos’ young ones, noting that proper policies arm educators to avert abuse in schools. “Stay alert, respect the law, and protect every child under your watch,” Oyelakin implored.

PoliticsOyo APC Accuses Makinde Of Squandering ₦2.9 Billion On State’s 50th Anniversary by DebiPaydotng(op): 7:25am On Feb 06
The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a fresh attack on Governor Seyi Makinde, alleging that his administration squandered a whopping N2.9 billion on the recently concluded 50th anniversary celebration of the state. NaijaChoice News report.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare, the APC claimed that the Makinde-led government deducted N90 million from the federal allocation of each of the 33 local government councils in the state to finance the event. This deduction alone, according to the opposition party, amounts to N2.97 billion, raising serious questions about transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds.

We have it on good authority that a sum of N90 million was deducted from the federal allocation of each of the 33 local government councils by Gov. Makinde ostensibly to fund the anniversary project while another undisclosed amount was taken from the coffers of the state government for the same purpose,” the statement read in part.

The APC further queried the rationale behind the expenditure, asking: “What did they do with over N3 billion?” The party slammed specific activities during the celebration, describing them as extravagant and politically motivated. These include an air show, conferment of awards, distribution of Ankara uniforms allegedly meant for members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and a novelty football match.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the Oyo State government marked its 50th anniversary with a series of events, including a thanksgiving service attended by notable figures such as former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who praised Governor Makinde for his use of public funds. However, the celebrations have not been without controversy, with some traditional leaders like the Alaafin reportedly boycotting the events amid tensions with the state government.

This latest allegation comes amid a backdrop of escalating political tensions in Oyo State. Just weeks ago, the APC vowed to expose more instances of alleged corruption in Makinde’s administration, following claims by former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose that the Oyo government received but mismanaged N50 billion in federal relief funds for the 2024 Ibadan explosion. The opposition has described the PDP-led government as a “cesspool of corruption” thriving on “false narratives and propaganda.”

Critics on social media have also weighed in, with some questioning the governor’s priorities. One user highlighted the N65 billion budgeted for renovating the government house, contrasting it with the lack of major housing projects during the anniversary.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government has yet to respond to the APC’s allegations. NaijaChoice News reached out to the governor’s media aide for comments, but no reply was received.

The development has sparked debates among residents, with many calling for an independent audit of the anniversary funds to ensure accountability. Political analysts believe this could intensify the rivalry between the APC and PDP ahead of future elections in the state.

PoliticsLagos To Enforce Mandatory Waste Sorting At Source, Unlocks Economic Value by DebiPaydotng(op): 6:11am On Feb 06
In a bold move to revolutionize waste management and harness the economic potential hidden in trash, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to make waste sorting at source compulsory for all residents and businesses.

This development was revealed by Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), during his appearance on "The Conversation," a popular programme aired on Lagos Television (LTV) on Tuesday.

Dr. Gbadegesin emphasized that the initiative aligns with international best practices and will be reinforced by an ongoing review of the state's legal framework. This review aims to establish robust regulations mandating the separation of waste right at the point of generation, transforming how Lagosians handle their refuse.

"No longer will waste be seen merely as a burden to dispose of; instead, it will be viewed as a valuable economic resource," Dr. Gbadegesin stated. He highlighted the state's commitment to advancing its waste-to-wealth agenda, with a strong focus on recycling and material recovery to drive a more efficient and sustainable system.

The policy shift supports Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's vision of moving away from reliance on landfills towards a model centered on recovery and recycling. This is expected to ease the strain on existing landfills, foster circular economy principles, and attract private investments into recycling facilities across the state.

To bolster service delivery, the government is exploring ways to aid Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, including facilitating access to new compactor trucks. Recognizing the high capital demands of waste collection, this support is crucial for enhancing operational efficiency.

On the flip side, Dr. Gbadegesin warned of strict accountability measures. He disclosed that 22 underperforming PSP operators face sanctions after multiple warnings and performance evaluations. This comes on the heels of last year's action where 27 operators were sacked for failing to meet standards.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, LAWMA has been pushing for better waste practices, including calls for residents to avoid littering and adopt disciplined habits to keep Lagos clean. Dr. Gbadegesin reiterated that the success of this mandatory sorting hinges on effective regulations, upgraded infrastructure, active private sector involvement, and, most importantly, responsible behavior from citizens.

"Waste sorting at source is the cornerstone of building a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Lagos," he added, urging Lagosians to embrace the change for the greater good.

Environmental experts have lauded the move, noting that proper waste segregation could significantly reduce environmental pollution, create jobs in the recycling sector, and contribute to Nigeria's broader sustainability goals. With Lagos generating over 13,000 tons of waste daily, this policy could set a precedent for other states in the federation.

The Lagos State Government, through hashtags like #AGreaterLagosRising, continues to promote initiatives that enhance urban living and economic growth.

Lagos OEQA Presents Approval Letters to 76 Private Schools, Charges Owners to Uphold Standards

In a significant boost to the education sector, the Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA) has granted approval to 76 private schools, marking the first batch of approvals for the 2026 exercise. The ceremony, held at the Education Resource Centre in Ojodu on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, underscores the state government’s commitment to enhancing educational standards and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines. NaijaChoice News report.

Presenting the approval letters, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, admonished the new school owners to remain law-abiding and align their operations with state directives. “Ensure that you comply with all directives from OEQA and the Ministry. These directives are aimed at building credible institutions that will produce pupils of sound character and future leaders we can all be proud of,” he stated.

The approved schools include 34 secondary institutions, 41 nursery and primary schools, and one boarding secondary school, all of which successfully met the requirements outlined in the Lagos State Guidelines on the Establishment and Operation of Private Schools.

Alli-Balogun reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards vices such as examination malpractice, bullying, and sexual assault, warning that defaulters would face severe sanctions. He also emphasized the importance of adhering to the Lagos State School Safety Initiative to protect students, staff, and school property.

In her remarks, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, assured the proprietors of ongoing government support and monitoring. She urged those with boarding facilities to prioritize student welfare and comply strictly with relevant regulations, highlighting the collaborative relationship between the state and private operators.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the Lagos State Government has been streamlining the approval process for private schools, with OEQA adopting a quarterly approval system to encourage compliance and support quality education delivery. This initiative follows successful efforts in 2025, where 145 schools received provisional approvals in multiple batches, enabling them to participate in external examinations like WAEC and NECO, and access state capacity-building programs.

Director-General of OEQA, Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, described the event as a milestone in promoting accountability and standards in education. He announced plans to approve no fewer than 100 schools per quarter, urging unapproved institutions to utilize the new window by meeting all requirements.

Representatives from the Lagos State Examinations Board, including Mr. Peter Adefioye, enlightened the owners on examination procedures, stressing that the Placement Test for primary school pupils is mandatory across the state. He advised seeking direct information from the board to avoid misconceptions.

In a vote of thanks, Director of Private Education and Special Programmes, Mrs. Kehinde Ogunlana, commended Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his investments in education. Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Pastor (Mrs.) Atinuke Oyenuga pledged to maintain high standards and contribute to Lagos’ educational excellence.

The event was attended by dignitaries including representatives from the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Eniola Opeyemi, and coordinating directors from the six education districts.

This development aligns with broader efforts to regulate private education in Lagos, where thousands of schools operate, aiming to foster an enabling environment for quality learning amid Nigeria’s growing demand for accessible education.

PoliticsLASG Addresses Makoko Demolition Concerns, Unveils $2m Redevelopment Initiative by DebiPaydotng(op): 7:52am On Feb 03
The Lagos State Government (LASG) on Monday held a media update to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the demolition of structures in the Makoko waterfront community, emphasizing safety concerns and announcing a $2 million redevelopment plan to support affected residents. NaijaChoice News report.

The briefing, which took place at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, featured key officials including representatives from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, who defended the exercise as necessary for public safety and urban planning. According to the government, the demolitions, which began in late December 2025, targeted illegal structures built under high-tension power lines and in violation of environmental regulations, displacing over 10,000 people in the historic fishing settlement.

During the update, officials clarified that the operation was not a wholesale demolition of Makoko but a targeted removal of unsafe buildings. “Makoko was not fully demolished; there was a targeted removal of structures that were built within the radius of high tension,” a state representative stated, addressing widespread misconceptions. They insisted that multiple notices had been issued since 2024, with extensions granted throughout 2025 to allow for voluntary compliance.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, through his spokespersons, accused some local and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of exploiting the situation for financial gain, claiming their opposition was profit-driven rather than rooted in genuine concern for residents. “The state government has no interest in destroying people’s homes without reason; this is strictly about public safety and infrastructure protection,” the governor was quoted as saying.

In response to the backlash, including reports of police using expired tear gas on protesters and allegations of excessive force, the LASG unveiled a $2 million redevelopment plan aimed at resettling displaced families and improving the area’s infrastructure. The initiative includes provisions for temporary housing, vocational training for fishermen, and environmental upgrades to mitigate flooding risks in the lagoon community.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, criticised the police tactics, alleging the use of expired tear gas during clashes with demonstrators. Meanwhile, a coalition of advocacy groups reported that more than 3,000 homes have been destroyed, leaving families like one with 5-month-old twins to live in wooden canoes amid the rainy season.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has scheduled a meeting with Makoko community leaders on Tuesday, February 3, to discuss the demolitions and potential relief measures, following a petition from affected residents. This comes amid growing calls from global rights organisations to halt the exercise, citing violations of court orders and international human rights standards.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the demolitions have sparked widespread outcry, with residents dismantling their own structures in fear of further action and activists accusing the government of disregarding vulnerable communities. Makoko, established in the 19th century, has faced similar threats in the past, often halted by public pressure.

The government maintains that the actions are part of broader efforts to ensure sanitation and security, while promising that the redevelopment plan will bring long-term benefits to the area. Residents, however, continue to plead for reduced demolition scopes and immediate humanitarian aid.

PoliticsOsinbajo Marks 7th Anniversary Of Helicopter Crash With Heartfelt Thanksgiving by DebiPaydotng(op): 9:56pm On Feb 02
In a touching display of faith and gratitude, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has commemorated the seventh anniversary of his miraculous survival from a helicopter crash that could have ended tragically. Taking to social media, Osinbajo shared a profound testimony, crediting divine intervention for saving him and 11 others on board without a single injury. NaijaChoice News report.

The incident occurred on February 2, 2019, when the AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter, operated by Caverton Helicopters, crash-landed in Kabba, Kogi State, during an election campaign rally for the All Progressives Congress (APC). Osinbajo, who was then serving as Vice President under President Muhammadu Buhari, was en route to a political event when the aircraft encountered issues during landing.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, the crash was attributed to human error, with the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) citing inappropriate landing techniques by the captain and failure to adhere to company procedures. The report also highlighted "brownout" conditions—a dust cloud that severely reduced visibility—as a contributing factor. Remarkably, all passengers, including Osinbajo's aides, security personnel, and crew, emerged unscathed, an outcome Osinbajo has repeatedly described as "only mercy, only grace."

In his anniversary post, accompanied by photos from renowned photographer Tolani Alli (@tolanialli) and music by gospel artist Dunsin Oyekan (@dunsinoyekan), Osinbajo reflected on God's faithfulness. He quoted lyrics from Oyekan's song "Nagode," which resonate with themes of divine protection:

"You have been faithful More than just faithful From my cradle days Till this very hour And I know You will You will be with me Till the very end Ubangiji (Sovereign God) Yesu (Jesus) Nabaka godiya (I give You thanks) Sarkin duniya (The King of all the Earth) Nagode (Thank You)"

Osinbajo continued with a personal testimony: "God of my journey, I remember how You saved us. I remember how You brought us out. Seven years ago, You carried every one of us out of that helicopter crash without a single scrape. Not one life lost. Not one wound left behind. Only mercy. Only grace. Lord, we are deeply grateful. We give You all the glory, all the honor, and all the adoration. NAGODE!!!"

The post, which has garnered widespread reactions online, echoes similar commemorations in previous years. On the second anniversary in 2021, Osinbajo expressed similar thanks, noting how the experience strengthened his faith.

Eyewitness accounts from 2019 described the helicopter tilting and crashing near Kabba Township Stadium, with dust enveloping the area. Despite the severity, Osinbajo proceeded with his campaign activities shortly after, demonstrating resilience.

Today, as Nigeria reflects on this event amid ongoing discussions about aviation safety, Osinbajo's message serves as a reminder of hope and gratitude. The former Vice President, now a prominent figure in legal and economic circles, continues to inspire many with his story of survival.

PoliticsLagos Govt Sensitises Residents On Traffic And Envirometal Law by DebiPaydotng(op): 7:59am On Feb 02
In a bid to foster compliance with environmental and traffic regulations among residents, the Lagos State Government, through its Special Offences (Mobile) Court, on Friday, January 30, 2026, rolled out a comprehensive public sensitisation programme across key locations in the state, including the Lagos Safety Arena, Oshodi, Iyana Ipaja, Ojota, and Ikorodu. NaijaChoice News report.

The initiative, dubbed “Justice on Wheels: Know the Law, Keep Lagos Clean, Safe and Orderly,” aimed at educating Lagosians on critical issues such as one-way driving violations, improper use of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes, and the obstruction of public spaces. This move aligns with the state’s broader agenda to promote a law-abiding society and reduce infractions through awareness rather than just enforcement.

Representing the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, the Director of Citizens’ Rights, Mr. Ogunsanya Jonathan, underscored the government’s dedication to making justice accessible and people-oriented. “The Mobile Court is not only an instrument of enforcement but also a vital platform for public education. Through sensitisation exercises like this, we seek to prevent infractions by ensuring that citizens clearly understand their rights, responsibilities, and the consequences of violating the law,” he stated.

Mr. Pedro further assured residents of the administration’s unwavering commitment to humane and lawful strategies in enhancing civic responsibility and upholding the rule of law in Lagos.

Earlier at the event, the Coordinator of the Special Offences (Mobile) Court, Mr. Olufemi Adekunle, highlighted the programme’s objective to close the knowledge gap between the justice system and the populace. “Our goal is to reduce avoidable offences by bringing legal knowledge directly to the people. When citizens understand the law, compliance becomes easier and enforcement less necessary,” he explained.

Adding his voice, the Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, Mr. Adetayo Akerele, emphasised the pivotal role of environmental cleanliness and traffic discipline in ensuring public safety. He warned that offences like obstructing public areas, misusing BRT lanes, and driving against traffic not only disrupt daily life but also sabotage the state’s vision for a clean, safe, and orderly Lagos. “We urge all residents to adhere to these laws for the greater good,” Akerele appealed.

The sensitisation featured lively interactions with commuters at bus stops, distribution of informational fliers, and real-life demonstrations of common offences along with their associated penalties under the Special Offences (Mobile) Court.

This latest outreach builds on the Lagos State Government’s sustained crackdown on environmental and traffic violations.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News, in December 2025, the state secured the conviction of one Makinde Rasaq at the Special Offences (Mobile) Court in Oshodi for multiple environmental offences, including indiscriminate waste dumping and operating without a valid licence. The convict faced sentences ranging from one to three months of community service or imprisonment across seven counts, signaling the government’s zero-tolerance stance. Similar stakeholders’ meetings and sensitisation campaigns were flagged off in late 2025 to decongest prisons and promote community service as an alternative to incarceration.

The Ministry of Justice has reiterated its pledge to sustain such programmes, encouraging Lagosians to embrace traffic rules, maintain environmental hygiene, and conduct their affairs lawfully. With Lagos being one of Africa’s most populous cities, experts say these efforts are crucial in curbing urban chaos and promoting sustainable living.

In a similar vein, the Igwe of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu III, who received The Sun’s Outstanding Royal Father of the Year Award, echoed Oba Ladoja’s sentiments, praising the awards for inspiring further contributions to society.

NaijaChoice News joins the nation in congratulating Kabiyesi Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja on this well-deserved honour. His legacy of service continues to inspire generations, reinforcing the vital role of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s development.

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on Sunday led residents in a special thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of St. Peter Aremo, Ibadan, as part of the ongoing activities marking the state’s 50th anniversary celebrations. NaijaChoice News report.

The event, tagged Day 7 of the #OyoStateAt50 festivities, saw the presence of notable dignitaries, including former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, and the wife of Osun State Governor, Chief Mrs. Titilola Adeleke.

Governor Makinde, in his address shared on social media, expressed profound thanks to his guests for joining the historic milestone. “Today, we held a thanksgiving service at the Cathedral of St Peter Aremo as part of the activities for Day 7 of the #OyoStateAt50 celebrations. Let me once again, thank my brother, His Excellency Peter Obi and Her Excellency Chief Mrs Titilola Adeleke for joining us to celebrate this historic milestone,” Makinde stated. He further emphasized the state’s collective gratitude, noting, “We have a lot to be thankful for as a State and today’s thanksgiving services were held in all 33 local government areas to express our gratitude for Almighty God’s faithfulness and mercy towards us.”

The governor also used the occasion to assure citizens of sustained good governance beyond his tenure, highlighting his administration’s commitment to people-centered policies and infrastructure development.

As earlier reported by NaijaChoice News on the unveiling of the Oyo @50 logo and the launch of the 50-day countdown in December 2025, the celebrations have been building up with various events across the state, including the commissioning of key projects like the Ibadan Circular Road.

In his goodwill message, Peter Obi commended Makinde’s transformative leadership, describing it as a model for national development. “That is what Makinde is doing in this state,” Obi said, urging politicians to prioritize public welfare and unity. The Archbishop of Ibadan Province, The Most Rev’d Williams Aladekugbe, delivered a sermon titled “Gratitude,” praising God’s faithfulness to Oyo State over the past 50 years and acknowledging the contributions of past leaders. Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, from the former Western State, and the golden jubilee marks a significant milestone in its history of progress in education, agriculture, and infrastructure. The week-long celebrations, which commenced with an opening ceremony, are set to culminate on February 3 with more events highlighting the state’s achievements.

Residents across the 33 local government areas participated in similar thanksgiving services, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation for the state’s journey.
