I am a new business owner and an existing tax payer for close to 8 years. I registered and started my agriculture business in February. I got my TIN in March and ever since FIRS has been forcing me to pay two thousand naira every month on VAT, of which I am yet to make profit on my good.

According to the Nigerian VAT Act, it itemized some areas of businesses that should not be taxed.

These include:

Basic food items.
Books and Educational materials.

Plant and Machinery imported for use in the Export Processing Zone or Free Trade Zone; provided that 100% production of such company is for export.

Therefore if your agricultural business is involved in basic food items, then you are exempted from filing of VAT returns. However, if that is not the case, then the other option to to keep filing NIL, that is months that there is no profit in the business, instead of paying the Revenue office then it is better that way than to apply for cessation of business.

Please while I was applying for name reservation, I made mistake on the proprietor name, I wrote Abeeb Adeleke instead of Adeleke Abeeb. Adeleke is my surname while Abeeb is my name, but I mistakenly arranged it wrongly by putting Abeeb as surname and Akintayo as the first name.
