Every year, something happens around Christmas.

People who were buying an item for ₦20,000 suddenly discover that it is ₦25,000.

Something that was ₦8,000 becomes ₦10,000.

And sometimes, the worst part isn't even the price.

The item becomes difficult to find.

Christmas is a beautiful season, but it can also be one of the most expensive periods of the year for Nigerian families.

Transport goes up.

Food prices can rise.

Demand increases.

People begin travelling.

Markets become busier.

And sellers know that many people who waited until the last minute have very little choice.

That is why I strongly believe that if there are certain things you already know you will need between now and Christmas, you should start planning for them NOW.

Rice, beans, garri, semovita, yam flour and other staple foods are things households will consume regardless of how carefully they try to manage money.

Christmas also means visitors.

Family gatherings.

Cooking.

Travelling relatives.

Unexpected guests.

Instead of waiting until December when everybody is rushing to stock up, consider buying reasonable quantities early.

Even if the price difference per bag doesn't look huge, remember that you are buying something you were going to buy anyway.

2. COOKING OIL

Don't overlook cooking oil.

It is one of those household essentials that can quietly eat into your Christmas budget.

You need it for ordinary cooking, frying, Christmas meals and entertaining guests.

If you already know your household will use it, buying before the Christmas rush can help you avoid paying whatever price the market decides to give you later.

They can help you know who is approaching your property, what is happening at the gate, whether someone is repeatedly loitering around your premises, and even what is happening inside specific areas of the house.

The key is understanding that not every camera is designed for the same purpose.

A small indoor camera, a baby monitor, a webcam, a doorbell camera, a PTZ camera and an outdoor bullet camera may all capture video, but their designs make them better suited to completely different security situations.

1. USE SMALL INDOOR CAMERAS TO MONITOR AREAS YOU DON'T NORMALLY SEE

You don't necessarily need a large, obvious security camera everywhere.

Small indoor cameras can be useful for monitoring specific areas of your home such as hallways, living rooms, staircases, entrances and other strategic points.

Some compact cameras are designed to sit on shelves, tables or other surfaces, while others can be mounted discreetly.

This type of camera can be particularly useful when you want to answer questions such as:

→ Who entered the house while I was away?

→ Did someone enter a particular room?

→ What happened in the living room while nobody was there?

→ Did someone move or tamper with something?

→ What is happening in a particular part of the house right now?

The important thing is not simply to install a camera because "everybody is installing cameras."

Instead, think about what information you need from that camera.

A camera covering a hallway, for example, can tell you when someone moves between different sections of your house. A camera positioned toward an entrance can show when someone enters or leaves.

Strategic placement turns an ordinary camera into an information-gathering tool.

2. BABY MONITORS CAN BECOME USEFUL INDOOR MONITORING CAMERAS

Baby monitors are another example of cameras that people often overlook when thinking about home security.

Instead of opening the gate immediately because someone knocked or called, you can first see who is outside.

→ IS SOMEONE WAITING FOR YOU?

A camera can help you identify visitors before you approach the entrance.

→ IS SOMEONE REPEATEDLY LOITERING AROUND THE PROPERTY?

This can be particularly important.

An isolated person passing your house may mean nothing. But if someone repeatedly appears around the same location at unusual times, that activity becomes useful information.

→ WHAT HAPPENED BEFORE AN INCIDENT?

A camera positioned around the entrance can potentially provide information about people or vehicles approaching the property before an incident occurs.

For these locations, outdoor cameras such as bullet cameras, dome cameras, turret cameras, doorbell cameras or PTZ cameras may be more appropriate depending on the property and what you need to see.

The objective should not simply be to "have a camera."

The objective is to establish visibility over important areas.

A camera pointed at an empty wall may technically be working perfectly, but it isn't giving you much useful information.

→ Movement has occurred inside a particular area.

→ An event occurred at a particular time.

The cameras are therefore creating a picture of what is happening around the property.

This is where strategic camera placement becomes extremely important.

This approach can be much more effective than simply installing cameras everywhere and hoping the recordings will be useful later.

It also means that homeowners should think carefully about what happens when a camera detects something unusual.

THE CAR THAT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE SOLD 🚗

Musa never planned to sell his car.

In fact, if you had asked him six months earlier, he would have laughed and said,

"Sell this one? Never."

His neighbours knew the car.

Every morning it started with one smooth ignition.

No smoke.

No funny sounds.

No pushing.
