Chapter six

Sometimes during the wee hours of the morning, Bolarinwa rolled on his side staring at the hotel room. It's been a long time, a time he was sure he couldn't remembered he slept on something closer to the floor. He lifted himself up, shoulders aching, he stared at the couple smuggled together. He shook his head. So much for being a brother.
He packed his clothing and went to the bed shaking lightly while calling Wande's name. Feeling a gentle touch on his shoulder, Wande pried his heavy-lidded eye opened.
"What the hell.."
"Shut up jo, and come and lock your door" Bolarinwa retorted moving to the door.
Wande trodded behind him and stopped him from opening door.
"I haven't thank you for last night"
"It's fine. I was very scared. One moment everything was fine and the next it was horrible. We need to go back home and talk to the elders" he said while Wande nodded
A sudden smile appeared on Bolarinwa's face
"Bayo, you bashed his face. You have to call him"
"I wish it was that stupid Kunle" Wande said chuckling
"See you later in the morning" Bolarinwa said while he locked the door behind him.

He moved back to the bed, his temples thumped dully----a stress headache forming. He wasn't surprised, with what he went through the previous night. He could still remember everything clearly. Bola really did a lot for him keeping his insanity private. Even Grace that was called on a short notice was not aware. He couldn't imagine how it would wrecked him publicly if other people were to found out. Whoever did that evil to him deserved nothing short of death. His restless body woke up his wife, she turned staring at him with delight in her eyes.
"What's the time?" she whispered
"3:am" he whispered back after checking his wrist watch
She snuggled closer to him, trying to sleep when a thought occurred to her.
"Grace. I saw her last night" she said in that low tone
"You can quit with that whispering, your brother is gone. Its just you and I" But he knew his wife loved conversing in low tones.
"Is he?" she asked sitting up on the bed looking around.
Wande saw the white bracelet adorning her hand. He examined it and saw nothing extraordinary. It was just white beads.
"If you remove that bracelet, do you suppose I won't be my normal self?" He asked softening the word after she reprimanded him for saying he was mad.
"I didn't ask her. But I wouldn't want to know by removing it now. Let's wait till morning and call her" she said, leaning on him as they slipped deeper beneath the duvet.
"You and Grace.." she started
"She's married" he explained further when she stared at him with wide eyes.
"She works for me. That's all. We are not lovers or anything relating to that"

She was relieved to hear that. The market was free of all competitors off. Just an unknown enemy hovering above them. She asked him about the night at her restaurant. Why he was angry at her.
"I thought you were pregnant" he said explaining all about the note and the conversation he over heard.
"My dad has been concerned about that aspect of my life since I was seventeen"
"Your brother told me about it. He heard it from your stepmother" Wande said
"Really? Did my stepmother mentioned how she told her friends and our neighbours that I don't have womanliness. That I can't give birth. It was really hard on me then. And there's this incision here" she said raising her gown up from her leg to her stomach oblivious of the excitement thrill in her husband's eyes. She drew the gown down while her husband frowned inwardly.
"The Doctor performed surgery on me which was really unnecessary to view if I had a complete reproductive organs. Everything is fine now" she said.
But Wande was not interested in the tale. Though he had a lot to say from telling her to forgive her stepmother to empathizing with her. But his interest had shiftedto a more baser needs.
Without warning, Wande sprang off the bed carting her with him.
"What.."
"Let's shower" he replied helping her with her gown
"I want to talk" she said
"In the shower" he replied striding into the ensuite bathroom and straight into the spacious shower with her.

He pressed a button, warm water cascaded down their body. Olaronke grabbed her body wash and stood on her toes pouring some on his head, their body merging together in the process.
"Smell nice" he murmured, his hand cupping her derrière.
He watched her lips moved without hearing a thing. He grinned, sometimes nodded to whatever she was saying.
"Talk" Olaronke said poking his chest
"It's nice" he commented
She rolled her eyes "I was left alone at the hospital to face the surgery. That's not nice"
"I'm sorry" he said, his lips capturing hers in a soul searing kiss. The desire to talk was soon forgotten replaced with a white hot passion that sizzled across her skin. His hands were all over her. His long fingers tampering with her shower cap.
"Don't. Not under the shower" she managed to say
He lifted her out of the ensuite bathroom to the bed. The offending cap was thrown across the room.
"Wande?" she called
"Can you please make your mouth busy elsewhere? Must you talk?" he groaned, his hand trailed along her throat urgently searching for her breasts.
She sighed with pure contentment as she closed her eyes. Her fingers roved from his chest down to his muscular thighs. It was finally here. The wedding night she had looked forward too. Well, it was morning for them. When she tried to tell him the experience was new for her.
"Don't talk" he silenced her with his mouth.
It seemed making love was a serious business to him
************
Olaronke sat at the reception with her husband waiting for Oluwaniyi who sounded distraught on phone. They should have left with her brother this morning but when she received his call, her husband had convinced her to wait and hear him out.
"What's the next thing for us?" She asked Wande
"Go home, talk to my uncles about what happened to us. Start a family" he said while she nodded.
"That sounds great. But I will like us to have a proper marriage. A court marriage" she told him.
Aina had raised her fears on that subject.
"We will arrange one when we get home" he replied
"So you and this your ex did not get down?" he asked, while she raised her eyebrows
"Sorry, I know its a silly question but I am just surprised" he said
"I don't believe in premarital sex" she told him
"You have been waiting for me? That guy is such a loser. A big one" he said grinning like the a typical male
She rolled her eyes "No, I actually made a choice that suit me. No man is worth waiting for" she said smiling inwardly
It was Wande turn to roll his eyes " You do know how to massage a man's ego"

She was about to reply him, when she saw Oluwaniyi entered the reception looking around him.
"Hey" Olaronke called waving
Seeing him again did nothing to her. It brought no pain or joy. It was just like seeing someone new. She couldn't believed she had once spent three years of her life with him and was hoping to spend the rest of their lives together.
She introduced him to her husband who seemed happy with himself for reasons she did not know.
"I don't even know where to start from" Oluwaniyi said facing her
"I am very sorry Adunni. I shouldn't have done what I did to you. But then, things weren't clear to me"
"What things?" Wande asked
"Barely twenty four hours to our wedding, I received a mail and some pictures"
"What pictures?" She asked him

Oluwaniyi looked doubtful, he was not sure if he should revealed those pictures or not. Especially with Adunni's husband present. He wouldn't want to destroyed the trust that existed between them
"Oluwaniyi, let's see the pictures. Whatever it is, I have my husband's trust" Olaronke said smiling at Wande
"Let's see the pictures" Wande added
Oluwaniyi brought out a replica of the pictures she showed her husband the previous night. Except that the one he was holding was printed in black and white and photo shopped.
"How did you get this?" she was shocked
"Someone sent it with a mail that says you cannot give birth that you have had several abortions. I was stupid to believe it"
"You only trust yourself. You have never shown faith in another human" Olaronke said while he grimaced
"I have never seen those pictures on your phone and I remembered you once read about IVF on my phone" he explained
"That's enough reason to believe all that lies? Our three years together meant nothing to you. I intend to give you these pictures on our wedding night as a gift. If you remembered I said I have pleasant pictures I want to show you. A phone call would have cleared all this" Olaronke was annoyed
"Thank God there was no phone call" Wande added
"I am very sorry once again. Bonuade said she sent the mail to me" Oluwaniyi said feeling uncomfortable
"Bonuade? I am surprise. I can't believe she did that" Olaronke said shaking her head
"Me too. There's something she's keeping from me. She told me the message in the mail were all lies and it was not her words. She said its someone closer to you. But she wouldn't say. She said something about oath and death" Oluwaniyi said
"Oath and death?" Olaronke repeated while Oluwaniyi nodded.

He had saw some documents about Aina in his wife's bedroom after they moved back to their house. His wife had Aina investigated for reasons alien to him. And he asked her, but she wouldn't tell him. When he became persistent she had dissolved into uncontrollable tears. There was a hold Aina had over his wife but she refused to tell him. He was helpless, he wished he could help her.
"Someone sent a note to my husband. The note said I was pregnant for you and that was why I married Wande after you left me. Did Bonuade confessed to that too?" Olaronke asked him.
"No" he said looking shocked
"Who knew about these pictures?" Wande asked her
"Myself, you, my brother, Aina, the photographer, Oluwaniyi and Bonuade" Olaronke told him.
"That means someone in that list is behind all these notes we received" Oluwaniyi said, getting the logic behind Wande's question
"Someone that has something to gain" Wande added
"That's Bonuade, she wants you and she has you now" Olaronke said to Oluwaniyi
"It's not Bonuade. She has him now so why send me a note? Its someone that is out to destroy your happiness. The photographer has nothing to gain. He can't blackmail you with it because its not a naked picture" Wande said
"It's not your brother. Have you thought about Aina?" Oluwaniyi said while Wande nodded his agreement
"Aina? She's a gentle soul. She will never do that"
"I don't like her" Wande said
"Me too" Oluwaniyi added
"Do you know what we should do? Let's hirer a private investigator" Wande told the other man.
Olaronke sat back watching the two men planned together like they were a team. Oluwaniyi provided the contacts of the private investigator firm he knew. They called the firm and waites for the agency to showed up.
"This is not necessary. Would you say Aina is behind what happened to you last night?" She asked Wande, who only raised his eyebrow
"I know Aina more than you, do you know she came to my office ......"
"I knew she came to your office and you had your security throw her out just because she mentioned my name. That's wickedness" Olaronke said angrily.
"That's not true. She came there trying to seduce me and saying all sort about you" Oluwaniyi said
"Stop flattering yourself" Olaronke said
"Its OK. Adunni I need Aina details for the investigator" Wande said
"I will not betray my best friend" she said stubbornly
"Your friend that lied against you. Do you know what she told Kunle?" Wande asked her
"She said we went everywhere. That's not exactly a lie. But I have never been to Glorious night" Olaronke said
"Glorious night? I missed those days" Oluwaniyi said

That set another conversation in. The guys talked about those days, careful to avoid offending topics. Olaronke kept rolling her eyes wondering what was special in those games they indulged in.
The private investigator came, she reluctantly provided the details they needed after the investigator convinced her that she shouldn't trust anyone at this point. Later on, they saw him off while she went back to the hotel room to gathered her things. She came back to see Oluwaniyi still waiting with her husband.
"Adunni I am very sorry for what I did that day" he apologized
"It's fine. I have forgiven you" she said smiling
"How did it went that day" he asked
She told him everything and they burst out laughing.
"How's Bonuade?"
"She's fine, except this big secret weighing us down. She's pregnant and always worried" he told her
"Everything will be fine. Tell her that I am happy for her"
"I will. Are you happy?" he asked her
"I am fizzing with it" she answered
"You deserved all the happiness. Can I tell you something?" he asked
"Yes" she answered
"While we were dating, Aina still sent me nudes of her that I deleted instantly. She's not worth your trust" he said

She mulled over his words while they waited for their flight at the airport. Aina had done a lot for her, when she had no one. She was the one who cared for her when she was sick. She was always there for her. Was it now she should doubt her best friend? Someone who gave her warmth when her own family never really cared about her until now. All her holidays were spent at ogbomosho and Aina's parents were good people.
"How can you be friends with someone that does not mirror you? She drinks alcohol, club, sleep around and you are none of those things" Wande said to her
Olaronke brought out her phone and decided to do her own little investigation. She dialed Stevie's number
"Stevie calm down please. I am sorry I was rude to you that day. I was annoyed you used and dumped my friend" she said to him

She listened to him. He said he would sent some pictures to her. Since she was not on social media, she gave him her husband's number. They waited for many minutes, when the pictures started coming in. She stared at them with wide eyes especially pictures of her best friend with Mrs Georgina's husband.
"You know those men?" Wande asked her
"Not all. Some of therm are lecturers but this elderly man is Mrs Georgina's husband. I have to call her. Aina has been lying to me"
She called the woman. The woman did not waste time before revealing everything to her.
"I am going to divorce him. He's such a useless man" she told her
But Olaronke had nothing to say to her. In her opinion, it served her right. She was the one sending Aina to those lecturers and turned her to what she was today. If Aina used that knowledge on Mrs Georgina's husband then it was no big deal.
**********
"Why do you want to help me?" Grace asked as Aina took her place opposite her. They were in a restaurant at Ibadan. Grace had called the number and invited her over to help Wande discovered who was behind it. She put her phone on record

"Let me introduce myself to you" Aina said in a croak voice. She did not trust this woman not to reveal her. So she had changed her look with the help of a makeup artist who added small tribal marks on her face. Her face was overly powdered with lipstick. A small hijab on her head she believed would hide her identity. The lady she wanted to impersonate was Olaronke's mate in secondary school who became arrogant to her while they were in the university.

"My name is Nurat. Olaronke was my friend in secondary school but when we got to the the university. She became full of herself" she told her.
"I'm hungry, let's eat" Grace said.

Aina tried not to wince when Grace ordered an expensive wine for herself with chicken. Grace had told her she would be the one to pay for their date.
"This hatred of yours have been going on for how many years?" Grace asked
"I didn't hate her until she wronged me" Aina retorted and got a grip on herself before she made a mistake
"I came here to help you" Aina croaked more
"I understand that but I need to know who Olaronke is. I need to understand her weakness and use it against her" Grace said
"Well she's just some self-righteous fool that thinks she's better than everyone" she replied
"Nurat, what is it that makes you angry with Olaronke" she asked
"All right, I admit I am angry with her but its because she's contented and seems to enjoy a life without men. Especially during our university days. She has no problem being on her own and she talks down on me for going out with men"

Grace studied the miserable lady before her. Her words were conflicting. She was trying her damn best to find fault in Olaronke. And she was jealous but she didn't know it.
"Why are you so miserable?" Grace asked her
"Who said I am miserable?" Aina spat out wondering if Grace had investigated her just like she did
"Why are you being defensive? It's only a question" she said calmly
"I am not miserable" Aina said through gritted teeth
"How do you intend to help me?" Grace asked and watched the other lady's face light up with joy. It seemed the only thing that gave her pleasure was seeing Olaronke sad.

She listened to the lady went on about her great plan. She wanted Grace to become pregnant for Wande and moved into the Lagos house. She confided that Olaronke had no one to fight or support her. Her mother was long dead and her father had another wife. She also mentioned that Olaronke had mental problem so she ran away from difficult situation.

"If you move into that house today, I assure you within a month Olaronke would leave that house for you" she croaked happily seeing the convinced look on Grace's face.
"What is in it for you?" Grace asked her
"Nothing. I don't want anything" Aina replied
"Except it will make you happy?" Grace questioned
"Yes"
"How much are you willing to pay for me to do this for you?"
"Pay? You are the one who wants the man" Aina was shocked she forgot to masked her voice.
Grace was a real bitch

"Yeah I want him but you are more desperate than i. This is your plan not mine, pay me and I will make her life miserable she would wish for a quick death"

Aina watched the other lady and was pleased with the the determination shimmering on the other lady's face. She was exhausted of tracking down her enemies. If Grace would do the job, why not pay her? She would be able to focus on Bonuade and maybe mummy Kemi. And Mrs Georgina.
"How much do you want?"
"Five hundred thousand naira"
"Two fifty"
" Three fifty and its a deal" Grace said

Aina nodded and collected Grace's account details. She promised to send the money to her the following day.
Aina watched Grace leave. She grabbed the bottle of wine Grace left behind and drank from it happily.
Grace stood at a corner and took Aina's pictures. She hoped it would help Wande

Grace sighed as she sat down in the noisy restaurant which was crammed with young men and their dates stuffing the place. In the corner was Mr. Olajide standing all by himself talking to someone on the phone. The man was born to wear black tie. His evening clothes fitted him perfectly; made to measure, obviously. He was tall and very handsome.

This was the third night in a row they were meeting. Wande had called her the previous week and told her about an important client who wanted to buy some properties and she had to be extra nice to him. On their first meeting, she had shown him different pictures of the available properties but he seemed not to be interested. He was busy asking personal questions. On the second night, he had thrown the catalog she gave him aside and continued talking about himself and drawing her into personal conversation.

But this evening she was prepared to give him a piece of her mind. If he was not interested in buying properties he should just say that rather than wasting her precious time. She waved at him and he sauntered towards her. He looked young for a man in his forties. Unlike most men in his age group, his stomach was hard and flat probably from exercising not the usual pot belies that was common in an average rich Nigerian man.

"It's too stuffy in here. Let's move to somewhere private" he said leading her to another section of the restaurant.

"It's very quiet in here" she commented admiring the cool, high-celligned room and the flowery floor.

"Read the inscription up there" he said pointing to the shiny alphabets lined in rows on the wall

"It says " welcome to Abuja " he read it out.

"Where we are coming from is called what?" She asked, relaxing on the seat

"Lagos" he answered while she laughed heartily

"Grace, what will you like to eat?" he asked studying the menu

She raised her eyebrow at the use of her name. This was not a business dinner that was clear to her now except the role Wande was playing.

"I need to go to the loo, excuse me" she said

"Of course" he murmured

Mr. Olajide stared at her disappearing figure. She was clad in a a gray suit and black trousers with heels. She was more pretty than her pictures he saw on Wande's phone .Was he overdoing things? Should he have waited for weeks before he became too familiar with her?
No, there was no point waiting. They are adults. Not, a fourteen year old kid that play around. He was too old for the chasing game. He would tell her his mind. He needed a wife who would look after him and his nine year old daughter.

Grace waited patiently for Wande to pick his phone. She was in the ladies room and she could hear voices outside. There were people waiting outside to use the loo.

"Grace" Wande's sleepy voice came through

She didn't bother with pleasantries. She launched straight into how she found the man's eyes on her offending. And how he was not interested in his properties.

"Grace, Mr Olajide is someone you need to know. He's young and not attached. I have known him ten years ago and he is an honourable man. Someone you should marry" Wande said, waiting for her to scream or probably curse him.

He was tired of fending off Grace unwanted attention. She was always over him and he needed to do something about it if they were to have a lasting work relationship.

"Wande, you are trying to marry me off to a stranger, who the hell do you think you are?" She was livid.
"Before you unsheathe your sword, calm down and think. You want to get married; you are desperate about it. Hence, this your chasing me around and enduring my insulting attitudes. A man is out there, crazy over you. He only saw your pictures and he is half in love. Give him a chance and see what comes out of it. Why are you women like this, you shower your attention on a man who wants nothing to do with you and ignores the one vying for your attention. Admit it, you don't love me, you only want to get married to a good man"

Grace thought over his words as she left the loo amidst the hiss and glaring eyes of the little crowd waiting to use the toilet. She was not in love with him, she only wanted to be a wife to someone responsible. Not those young men that duped her in the past claiming to love her. She was thirty two and needed to settled down.

"Hi" she said smiling at him as she sat down.
Mr Olajide heaved a sigh of relief. He thought she was gone after waiting for ten minutes and she still didn't show up.

"You look different, like you just realized something" he said studying her relaxed face.

"Yea something like that, I had a revelation" she smiled back

"Care to share it?" he said waving at the waiter who appeared with food and drinks.

"Hmm no. Are you married?" She asked him

"No, but I have a daughter, Olawunmi" he answered

"Why didn't you marry her mother?" she asked as she dispatched her moutthful

"She's depressive. She's always sad and all that and didn't want to marry me" he replied

"How old is your daughter?"

"Nine"

"Who's taking care of her?"

"Just me, my mum is too old to look over that bundle of energy"

Their relationship speed up almost immediately. The following week,, she met her stepdaughter in a restaurant. The young girl was nice, grinning at her with chocolate stuffed in her mouth. When Mr. Olajide casually announced to his daughter that Grace was moving in with them.

"Why?" the little girl asked

"I'm going to narry her" he answered

"That's good" she replied nodding her head.

It was news to Grace, he was going to marry her. For two days, she simply could not function. She didn't go to the office and later realized Mr. Olajide must have asked Wande for her home address since she had refused to pick her calls.
She opened the door and burst into tears

"Oh, Grace, Grace! Come here"
He held her, sitting at her balcony, patting her at the back as if she were his child

"What's this all about? You think you were never going to get married and you bought a form for the seminary?" he teased

"Not funny" she hit him and giggled

"Now that's better. Will you marry me Grace? You just have to save this cold and lonely old man. So what do you say? You will marry me?"

He asked her for all of three days. She knew she had to marry him. He was totally different from all the men she knew in the past and she was sure she would never meet his kind again.
Two weeeks later, she walked the aisle singing in her mind that Mr. Olajide was in love with her. Everyone of his family and hers were happy for them. Her aunt had encouraged her to make the marriage work.

"It's all in your hands you know. I have spoken to Wande.
He's told me everything I needed to know about Olajide. He's a nice man and not a woman beater. He doesn't sleep around. That's a complete man if you ask me"

Mr. Olajide was a complete man. She recited in her head as they exchanged their vows. It was a very small wedding. Grace smiled what she hoped was a radiant smile to the fifteen guests present.

For their honeymoon, they went to his village. It was a modernised farmhouse built on a hill. Its inside beautiful. She envisaged family holidays in the future, imagined herself extending gracious invitations "What are your plans for the holiday? Mr. Olajide and I will be in his town for holiday. How about you come with the children?"

"I bought this place for my father. He was a famer" he said

They watched movies, talked about their future planning the normal of kids they would have. At the end of her honeymoon, Grace was happy and grateful to Wande for gifting her a man who loved and understood her. As she sat in her office the following day, her face carved in pure joy. She received a text message from someone who called herself a "concerned friend". She wanted to help her get Wande by plotting against his wife.
She forwarded the message to Wande. He called her immediately

" whatever is going on between you and your wife, I think this person is behind it. I already called the number with Truecaller app but it only revealed a male name without a face. Could it be a jealous ex?"
*****************
Oluwaniyi walked into the house he shared with his wife. It was cold and lonely. He saw traces of dirt on the windows and a tell tale sign of an abandoned house. Everywhere, was dusty and he began to sneeze. Where was Bonuade? He searched everywhere, and got to their bedroom. All her clothes were gone. She had left him. His heart started skipping, he called her number; she was busy on another call. He was only gone for eight weeks and his wife was no where to be found. She finally picked her call

"Where are you? I am at home now and couldn't find your things?"

"I moved out" was her calm reply

"Moved out? To where?"

Bonuade was pissed with all the shouting and all. It was not as if he cared about her and these past few weeks she was already living a happy life without worrying about a man who saw her as a means of revenge. A man who could not forgive her. She remembered nights she went on her knees begging him. But he disposed her off like a piece of furniture

"I have moved to my place. You wanted a divorce and I am preparing for it the best way I can. Just leave me alone" she said ending the call.

Oluwaniyi stared at his phone. His wife was angry. This was not the homecoming he imagined. He thought she would be home waiting and all over him with the joy of seeing him. But his little wife had developed wings. And claws. Her place? She must have rented an apartment with his money. He brought out his handkerchief and cleaned a portion of the leather chair and dat down stretching his legs. He turn on the TV, the Dstv subscription had expired. He switched off the Tv.

Everywhere was annoyingly silent. Even when he was a bachelor his house was homely not this cold building his wife left behind. He was not married to the complaisant woman he thought she was and to be defied by
Bonuade who had once openly idolized him was unthinkable. He had to find her. But there was no one he could call. Her sister was clearly against the marriage and her parents were elderly people whom he did not want to worry. He shouldn't have left her alone in Abuja where she had no friend. He remembered a man. He was a close friend to her family. He searched for his number, praying his wife hadn't said anything to the man. He called Francis.

"Hey, are you back?" the man said as a way of greetings. He was always busy and had no time for preambles.

"Yea, and my wife is not here" he said

"Well, she didn't ask me to keep it a secret" he said describing the place to him.

Oluwaniyi was relieved. He couldn't imagined talking to Bonuade's sister. She would have screamed his ear off. He went to the bathroom and had a quick shower. Dressed in his casuals, he stepped out of his house with the intention of bringing her home.
Bonuade was fuming in anger over his call and her reaction to his homecoming. She was excited but the thought that he had gone off gallivanting without a care for her or his unborn child diminished her mood. He was welcome to his empty house. She thought to herself as she moved around her small office.
She read reports that Aina's engagement was cancelled and thought that was the beginning of her ruin. She only just started with her. Her next move would be to separate her and Adunni forever.

She had earlier on sent pictures of Aina and an elderly man to Mrs Georgina. The man in the picture was Mrs Georgina's husband. She had never met the woman but she knew of her from Aina's constant praising of the woman and the favours she had done for her.
Aina was a back stabber with a devilish soul and she Bonuade would cut off all the branches she might tried to hide underneath. She chewed on her pen, thinking on her next course of action when a vision appeared before her eyes. It was her husband.

"So this is your apartment?" He said waving off what she saw as her pride and that angered her.

"Yea it is" she replied succinctly

"Why did you move out of our home?" he asked calmly

"Your home not mine" she replied

"Bonuade, I am not here to fight you. I want you to come back home with me. I want us to start over again"
There was a time she longed to hear those words. She even dreamt of different scenes of his homecoming. But today, she was annoyed seeing him. If their marriage were to work, she needed to know where she stands with him. She could continued to live with a one sided love relationship.

"I have made my home here, just leave Oluwaniyi" she said, but when he stood rooted there, she left him and was satisfied with his angry look.
She thought she was rid of him, but she was wronged when he came in the night with his box. She watched him with wide mouth open.

"If this is where you want us to stay then its fine" he said
All the anger inside her melted. She watched him joked with her staffs and even bought dinner for them. He was disarming every of her defences. When she closed her store, it was the two of them inside. She didn't believe he would stay with her in a tiny apartment. He was uses to his wealthy lifestyle.

"Bonuade, I am sorry. I shouldn't have left you" he apologized while she nodded her head working on the zipper of her dress

"Here, let me help you" he offered and helped her to undressed. It was as if he never left.
They showered in the tiny bathroom with him rubbing his hand on her bump.

"I'm glad" he muttered

"About?" She asked raising her brow at him even though her faced was doused with soap

"The baby, its still there in your tummy" he said, this time washing her hair. His hand on her scalp was turning her into jelly.

"Where else do you expect it to be?" she said

"If I were you, I would have abort the baby" he replied, she slapped his hands off her head. She scrambled for the tap trying to turn it on and wash her face

"Bonuade, calm down. What is it?" he asked avoiding her small fists hitting him

"You want me to abort my baby" she cried

"Calm down. I meant if roles were to be reversed that's what I would do to a husband who left me and couldn't forgive me" he explained
She stared at him unsure of how to react. Reaching for the towel, she left him in the bathroom and dressed up in her night gown. She laid on the bed and felt its weight dipped beneath her.

"I am sorry I spoke out of turn. It was a stupid thing to say" he apologized
She turned facing him"why are you bent on revenging every wrong?"

"It was how I grew up with my half siblings, getting back on each other was for survival. We did it to get our father's attention. Telling him what one of his children was up to"

Bonuade knew he was not from a stable family. But she didn't realized he was affected by it. His father many children from different women, and brought them to live with him.

"In truth, I don't think I can go back to the way we were living" she said

"Why?" he asked watching her face

"You don't love me and it hurt to remember that I am your revenge on Adunni" she replied

"Bonuade, I am sorry you feel that way. I don't know how to convince you that I no longer think of Adunni. Nor do I still love her. She was actually cheating on me. She got married two days after we married" Oluwaniyi said
Bonuade bit her lower lip, she wished she could come out with the truth but she was scared of the oath and prayed God purnish Aina wherever she was. She would do anything in her power to make her life miserable till the end.

"But the truth is I enjoy our marriage and I won't want it any other way. I have to come to love you. You are everything I have always wanted in a woman" he said

"Are you saying you love me just to get me back?" She asked him

"No, I realized I love you and I don't want to live without you in my life. My stay in Lagos had taught me everything I need to know about love, its about giving and..." Bonuade stopped him with her lips

"I love you" she whispered

"But I want you to talk to Adunni on my behalf, its not good to leave her in the dark" Bonuade said

"I will" he replied
He wouldnt talk to liar, she was like her scheming friend Aina.

Wande had called at the beginning of the week casually informing her he was receiving an award over the weekend. He didn't invite her to be by his side on his big night. She asked him if Grace would be there, he replied with definitely. And he went on with "Grace this or that" so that she became sick and ended the call.

But she would be there whether he liked it or not. As the day approached for her to leave for Abuja, Olaronke's anxiety level rose higher and higher on Beck anxiety inventory. She was not sure if it was right to gate crash his party. What if he embarrassed her? Should she call her brother and go with him to the party? No, she would not Involved family. They were adults and they should settled their differences. Aina was not encouraging at all. She was totally against the idea of going after Wande.

"What if he is secretly married to Grace? It was not like you and him had a court marriage"

Mummy Kemi on the other hand kept urging her to give it a trial. The day before she traveled, she came around and took her hand.

"What are you going to wear?"

"Oh I expect I will wear one of my new dresses" she replied

"You will get out something you've worn a hundred times before in front of the mirror and you feel beautiful in it? No I want you to appear sensational on that night. What we are going to do is we will go right now to a beauty shop on the island, buy the best evening wear and then make your hair into something more beautiful. Where's Aina?" She asked looking around the restaurant

"I don't know, she's out again" Olaronle said looking worried "Ever since she came to stay with me she's always going off to places I don't know. Maybe you should talk to her. Aina is a good person, just that some of her habits are terrible"

"No I don't like her. There's something dark about her.Notwithstanding, I wish her the best. I hope she finds her own salvation too. Let's go"

As she stepped out of the salon very late in the night, Olaronke decided she had never felt this glamorous. Her fringe was long and shiny black weavon shot with wine. Tomorrow, she thought as she opened the gate to her house. She would stun them all.

Predictably, as Olaronke was in the midst of her last minute packing on the dawn of her flight, Aina called her on phone to opened the gate. She was obviously back from the club.

"Hi" Aina called her friend who was climbing the stairs in twos

"Good morning" Olaronke returned without looking at her.

"I want to talk" Aina said following her

"I am running late, Aina. I haven't finished packing. Whatever it is can be said over the phone or you can send a voice note to me. Or you can join me in Abuja"
She lied for the first time to her friend. Her flight was booked for Eleven but she had an appointment with her make up artist. And she was hoping Aina wouldn't come back on time so she could lock the gate and keep the keys to herself.

"Adunni, I know this is the first time we are at odds at each other. But i believe in you to do what is right. My opinion cannot be correct all the time. I pray your trip turns out well and I will join you in Abuja very soon" Aina said and Olaronke was relieved. She hated to be at odds with her friend.

"Thank you Aina. I will be expecting you in Abuja" she said hugging her for all of two minutes while Aina's eyes scanned the room

How can she lay her hand on Olaronke's hair? Her friend was a neat freak. She would have tidied everything. No hair would be left on her comb.

"Your hair is beautiful" Aina said running her hands over Olaronke's weavon her. What if she slipped her hand underneath and forcefully pulled out Olaronke's hair. Would she found it funny? No

"Wanna comb my hair" Aina said sitting before the mirror. She rummaged through her small table. Nothing was on the comb.

She combed her own hair and removed her deposits.
Olaronke was busy bringing out her shoes.

Aina helped her to pack. She knew her friend had her own system of packing. It was not the first time she had done this for her. Hard things like shoes, books, handbags stays at the bottom of her traveling bag. Then her night wares and undies stays on top with the T-shirts and casuals. Aina noticed her friend was busy in the wardrobe, she quickly pulled out a pant and stuffed it in her jean pocket. Olaronke turned holding two evening wears proudly.

"Oremii. This is beautiful" Aina said looking admiringly at the two gowns.

She collected the midnight gown. It was cut very low at the back and at the sides. While the pink her friend was holding was a high necked ball gown

"The pink you are holding will turn you into a princess no doubt. But this midnight blue will turn heads, trust me. Wande is in trouble and Grace will cry off" Aina said laughing with her friend.

As the plane to Abuja took off, Olaronke read the papers, her mind replaying her attitudes towards Aina who meant well for her. She told her she wouldn't be leaving her house key behind and if Aina has something important in the guest room she should picked it. Aina was visibly shocked and nodded her head that she understood. Did she really?
What if she came back from Abuja without resolving a thing? Who would stay with her like Aina did?

Mummy Kemi was at the airport in the morning waiting for her. Was it right casting her old friend aside for a new one? She felt bad. Aina had been nothing but kindness to her since the first day she met her. If tables were to be turned and Aina did all that to her, she would never speak to her again. But her best friend was a graceful lady, she never scream or shout in anger unlike her that was very dramatic.

She picked at her tray of airline food------ a piece of sausage and chilled bottle of juice and looked out of the window at the clouds puffing by. She began to daydream. Wande would be more handsome now or probably leaned from not feeding well. She could remembered his comments about her foods.

"By the end of this year I will have a six months old pregnant stomach from your delicious foods"

Grace was a poor cook. She threw the remnants of what she cooked on their wedding night into the bin. Some men could eat anything and Wande was one. When she asked him if Grace was a good cook. His reply was
"Who cares, as far as the meal is hot then its fine even if it taste like saw dust. But trust me, you her better than her"

She missed him so much, his endless questions; "Are you sure you don't want to cone to my office? Been locked in a house is bad for everyone" every hour of the day meant he cared about her.

At night when he was back, he would persuade her to go out with him. Sometimes, they eat out mostly shawarma and suya. They talked about many things, and he told her few secrets about many adults back home and she would laugh.
Only if he was reasonable, they would have been happy forever.

Suddenly she could hardly contain her excitement at the thought of seeing him again. She was no longer worried about his reception of her. Cold or warm she didn't care. She passed the empty tray to a passing stewardess. She had wheedle the party information from her brother. In the end, he had sent her his invitation card. The party was scheduled for 8pm.

The captain announced they would be landing at Abuja in eight minutes. Almost before she knew it, Olaronke was on the ground lugging her baggage off the carousel. She wheeled her trolley into arrivals in a daze, I am finally here she thought to herself. When her brother appeared in front of her in his perfectly cut suit, Olaronke screamed out loud in excitement embracing him.

"Ronke, how's your trip" he said grinning

"How did you know I will be here?" She asked him as he took the trolley from her"

"I asked your PA, who is also your secretary and everything. How much do you pay her?" He teased
Rose was a God-sent, the girl was diligent and ran the restaurant well.

"I pay her what she deserves. Does he know?" She asked

"Who?" He asked back

She rolled her eyes, a habit she learned from her husband.

"Wande" she answered

"I don't know" was his reply

"I want it to be a surprise, don't tell him" she said

"I hope you guys settled whatever is between you on time else I will call dad" Bolarinwa said frowning
That would be her last resort.

"Your PA is beautiful, where is she from" he asked his face brightening

"I think Ogun state. I am not sure" she replied

"OK. She seems nice" he said again

Olaronke felt like closing her ears. She was not interested in listening to his obvious feelings to the girl
"She said she stays in Ikeja, where?"

"Brother Bolarin I will hear all about this your feelings towards Rose after I have seen my husband" she replied

"Someone is jealous" he laughed as they entered the Waiting cab
"Yes I am. Where are you taking me to?" She asked

"A five star hotel" was his reply

Olaronke still had many hours before she attended the party. She called everyone important and decided to visit a sauna. It was the best place to relax
**************************
Aina had spent the previous weeks seeking information about Grace Adams. She found out Grace was a sophisticated woman. She had no female friends, all her friends were men. According to her, female friends were only good for gossips they have nothing to offer except their green eyes. She decided it was not wise to teamed up with Grace against her friend. It would not work like it did with Bonuade. Everything was falling a part; all her plans were. Oluwaniyi did not believed her. He was still with his wife and Olaronke was gone. If she was able to patched things up with her husband, he would realized the note he received months ago was lies. His wife was never pregnant. If Grace acted on the note she sent her, it might be difficult for Olaronke to reach her husband. But she could not rely on Grace. She had to do some thing. She paced around her rented flat. Wande might settle with his wife and Olaronke would believed Mummy Kemi's dream. She hated that woman. Waltzing into their lives to scattered her plans. No, she would not let this happened. After dealing with Olaronke she would face Bonuade for double crossing her. Well, she might extend it to Mrs Josephine the dreamer aka Mummy Kemi. Olaronke thought she was better than her. She complained about everything that has to do with her. She thought herself a model of what young ladies should be. She could remembered her words clearly to her, that night she went with a man.

"Aina, you are only nineteen. One and nine and you have started living waywardly. Don't live a script you can't tell its story. Take me for example I am....."

Her phone rang, she rushed to it thinking it was Grace. She had left one of her numbers behind to call if she wanted her help to get Wande. It was Adunni

"Oremii, how are you?" She said

"Aina, am nervous. I wish you are here" Olaronke said

"Don't worry I am praying for you here. Your reunion will be just like how I prayed it will be" Aina said hearing her friend loud amen.

"I am sorry about today. I was rude. My keys are with Rose in case you need them" Olaronke said, ignoring Mummy Kemi's voice in her head

"Alright dear. Where are you?" Aina asked

"I am at the reception, too scared to enter the party. Wande is in there" Olaronke answered

"Just close your eyes and do it" Aina said

"Alright, do take care. I will call you to give you feedback. Bye" she said and hung up.

Perfect timing. Aina thought as she arranged the ingredients for separation on the kitchen table. Adunni left her with no choice than to resort to this. The end result would be saddening, her friend would be beaten black and blue by Wande. It was for the better. Olaronke would divorce him over that and she Aina, would gloat secretly.

She brought out a small cutlass and cut the "itagiri" (Lagenaria Breviflora) into two equal halves like an orange. She added the "ata ijosi"(hot pepper) in between itagiri. She brought the stolen pant and cut it at the centre and stuffed the pieces into it.
She rubbed the itagiri halves together. Her eyes were red from the effect of the hot pepper. In a minute, she was drenched in tears and her nose was dripping. She had to endure this like Baba said.

She tried remembering Wande's late mother name. She recalled the conversation clearly with her friend.
" why is your husband named Babawande. He's the only child so I expect something like Durosinmi" Olaronke burst out laughing. They were in the kitchen cooking together
"Wande is not an abiku. His maternal grandfather died during the time of his birth so they named him father is back" she replied
"That's how they named me Aina because of the circumstances of my birth. The name is too Ancient" she groaned while her friend continued to laugh
"What's his late mum name?" Aina asked
"Towuro, I don't know what the hell that means. Its ancient just like yours" Olaronke never thought her questions were odd. Aina asked the most irrelevant things.
She started reciting the incarnation

"Oluporuru, po won ru , tu won ka"
Something that separattothings, separate them

"Ata ati oju won she ore"
The eye and the pepper are not friendly "

"Itagiri ta won danu"
Itagiri separates them

Olaronke the daughter of Odin and Wande the son of Towuro separates forcefully.

Aina kept rubbing the itagiris together even though her eyes were bloodshot and her body temperature was high from the effect of the pepper. She was in great pain and she had to do this till midnight

Olaronke returned from her impulsive, wildly, impractical journey to Calabar. Well, she was not usually like this--impulsive but with Aina around the unusual things happens. Her best friend suggested they visit Obudu cattle ranch. She was skeptical at first. Her restaurant was only few months old and she had never been absent for hours. Aina had asked her what could possibly go wrong in three days, she thought about it. Nothing, absolutely nothing could go wrong was her answer. It was not their first visit to the ranch. They had spent significant time there during their NYSC. It was one of her best memories. Life was almost perfect. She was engaged and happy.

She looked pale and tired, and she had not troubled to take off her heels when she came into her office, but by this time Bolarinwa was too angry to notice.

"You are back at last? I have been calling your name for the past two days but not reachable"
She collapsed on the couch removing her heels. She loved to wear them even though she ended up with sore feet.

"The network was bad over there" was her reply

"When last did you hear from your husband?"
It was his hard tone that forced her drooping eyelids open. His stance was angry, he was barely holding himself back from unleashing his emotions.

"Why are you annoyed?" She asked

"When last did you see your husband?" his voice was waspish

His phone calls said nothing at all except that Ibadan was beginning to bore him and he was thinking of returning to Abuja soon. She was annoyed, he was not returning to Lagos, their home. He said nothing about missing her-----about wanting to discussed their marriage. He had actually added the polite hope she was enjoying herself and she should send him her account details if she was in need of money. She had replied every of his questions in uncommunicative tone. She even mentioned her planned trip to Calabar hoping he would be jealous or authorative like some husband and instruct her not to go. Instead, Wande had advised her to visits some interesting places like calabar museum, millenium park and the likes. She had seethed in anger and ended the call. Was it possible he did not miss her at all and was he happy with the state of their marriage?

The past few months she pushed him from her mind. But seeing happy couples at the ranch brought back her own pain. She was only married in name. She had missed him, actually cried foolish tears. The thought of him had spoiled her short holiday, all the while she had tried, pretend to enjoy herself.

"Ronke" her brother called

She looked up, blinking her eyes to focus them, for they had become blurred.

"He calls me once in a while" she said
Bolarinwa silently hand her a newspaper. She lthrough it wondering what she should look for

"Check the middle page" her brother said

And then, the headlines caught her eye. She wrinkled her nose in distaste wondering why Grace looked smug like she caught a big fish. She turned the next page and saw her husband smiling at Grace while she clung to his arms like her life depended on it.
She read the last words out

"Not very married is he?"

"What do you intend to do? Divorce him?" Bolarinwa asked

"Divorce him?" Olaronke's voice went high "Oh no----- why should I make things easy and convenient for her? I will be dammed before I let her have him"

"Really? So you do want your marriage and you could not make up with him?" he said this with his brows shooting upward

She was shocked by his words. She hadn't revealed to anyone that she and Wande had a quarrel, well except Aina

"Yes, he told me how you ignore him. How you never care to call him" he said and raised his hands to stop her from replying him

"A wise woman builds her home while a stupid one steps aside and cheerfully clap at her falling home"

"Why should anyone blame me? I didn't do anything to Wande. He just stopped talking to me, snaps at every word I say. He does not eat my food nor does he care about me. I tried talking to him, pleaded with him to discuss our marriage but he refused. What do you expect me to do? Immerse myself in sadness? Kill myself with worry? All I did was make myself happy. Wande should stop acting like an overgrown baby and come out with what I did. If he does not want our marriage he should say it not cover up with a silly excuse that I kept him waiting while talking to my father"

Olaronke despised herself bitterly for going into hysterics but she could not stop herself. First,it was Oluwaniyi whom she loved and he left her and she tried to move past it. And she had been for eight weeks with Wande and one night it disappeared and she felt she was trapped---not only that but an unwanted wife as well.
After a while, her bitter sobs died away while Bolarinwa patted her on the shoulder. Her breaths began to cease.

"No, Ronke no" he said fanning her face

"Try to breath with your mouth"

She tried, she really did but lost the battle as fog of sleep embraced her.
**********************

She was furious with Aina. It had been a week since they came back from Calabar and Aina zoomed off to God knows where. She hadn't returned a single one of her calls despite the many text messages she had sent to her phone. Aina's behavior was unseemly. She had advised her to call Mrs Georgina if she could help her with a job, afterall she was Aina's mentor and her friend had done a lot for the woman. She refused without giving Olaronke a reasonable reason. There was those calls from Mrs Georgina her friend never picked. Something was not right, Aina was hiding a lot from her. Come to think of it, Aina never disclosed details of her relationship to her while Olaronke told her everything about her relationship. She knew nothing about Aina's family except minute details unlike her that divulged every details of her family to her.
Was it wise, doing that?

In the end, Olaronke called Mummy Kemi to come for a drink in the evening. It would be easier to talk without crowd teeming into the restaurant.
Mummy Kemi was attractive with expressive eyes set wide apart and a low cut that made her look younger than her thirty five year old. She was small with big breasts and a curvaceous figure.

"My goodness, you look smashing" commented Mummy Kemi as she arrived sitting on the table for two.
Olaronke knew she looked beautiful with her blond braids packed atop her head exposing her pierced ears studded with earrings.

"Thank you ma" Olaronke said smiling..

"Cut the ma, we are friends aren't we?" Mummy Kemi said smiling

The woman was a regular at her restaurant and she always praised her meals. She had even signed her on a year contract to supply foods for her staffs. Olaronke was excited. She exchanged calls with the woman almost every day and they had became friends sort off. She was not sure if it was wise to be closer to a customer but the woman was kindness herself. She paid her compliment and made her feel important even though she was richer and elegance herself.

"Something is eating you up, speak up" the older woman said

"Don't mind my manners what will you like to drink and eat?" She asked

"Let's skip meals this evening, let us talk. You are young and appear happy but something is not right. I know we only just met few weeks ago but you can talk to me" the woman said

"My life" Olaronke cleared her throat "It one difficulty after another. I have never been happy forever. Something always happen to taint it"

"Tell me about it" Mummy Kemi said

She launched into her childhood story, how her mother died. Her teen years, how she faced some challenges and her adult life, her relationship with men and how her happiness came in short supply.

"Do you drink?" was Mummy Kemi's question. Olaronke stared at her, did her story sound like someone who was drunk?
She called on the waiter and ordered for two glasses of wine

"We will need these if we are going to talk this through. Just suppose you do manage to get Oluwaniyi back what would be the point? He is married now and so are you. He belongs to the past. And now your husband, I don't understand why he would be angry over a little thing like that. It seems something is not right. Like a foul play. This is what you will do; its either you report to his uncles and your father or find him where...."

"Find who?" Aina's voice rang out as she picked another chair and sat beside Olaronke.

"Aina where have you been?" Olaronke said annoyed

"I called you several times, you didn't pick my call. How could you just leave without telling me?"

"Please ma, help me to beg my friend. I am sorry. I just wanted to clear my head" Aina said to Mummy Kemi

"I thought Calabar did that for you" Olaronke glowered at her

"I am sorry" she pleaded

Aina was always sorry. She was just tired of hearing that words. Why should one be sorry when there won't be any real change?

Aina, I don't like your habit of going off with unknown men. Her reply would be sorry.

Aina, you really shouldn't drink so much. I am sorry Darling

Aina, why don't you wait for months before you go to bed with him. How do you expect him not to dump you so easily? Her reply; I am sorry.
Sorry for seven years, yet no changes.

"Its fine" Olaronke smiled "continue ma"

"Or go to Abuja or wherever he is and seek him out. Do not leave until everything is settled. Do everything it takes" Mummy Kemi advised

"You mean her husband? But why would she want to go after him? He was the one who wronged her. Why is no one advising her Husband to come after her? Why not retain control of your life, if Wande is back he will be a control freak just like every men" Aina ranted while Olaronke passed the newspaper to her.

"My dear, we are talking about a marriage that has a potential to work. Not an abusive marriage Something is wrong somewhere. Something very dark and scary. I am not just a counselor by nature, I am gifted by God to dream. The first day I met you, I had a dream that night. Someone evil is behind your problems. Be careful who you talk to about your life. But you are a fighter, in the dream you came out a victory so shall it be" Mummy Kemi said holding her hands while Olaronke heart slid in and out of its cage. She was scared.

Someone evil

"It's late. My husband will be home now" the older woman said standing up to leave. Aina stood up to accompany her too

She smiled charmingly at her" my dear, don't bother. You just came in and need to rest"
Olaronke followed her to her car and the woman spoke in low tones "heed to my warning. Keep your personal things safe" Olaronke looked scared and the woman comforted her"I meant personal things like bra, your hair, pants. Do you chew chewing stck!?"
Olaronke nodded

"Don't chew it anymore, beware of friends like I said you will triumph over them all" the woman entered her car and left. She stood motionless watching nothing. A cold hand touched her. She was frightened. She turned to see her friend's teary face

"We will triumph over this together. Don't be scared, I will always stand by you"
Aina said hugging her.

"If you ask me, you should just lie low and let Grace try and creep back into his life, because if he wants a trophy wife then he's more than welcome to her and he does not deserve you. Personally, I think you are better of without him in your life. You have peace and quiet no drama, why not enjoy that?" Aina said looking into her eyes.

But what Olaronke saw in Aina's eyes was a bitter woman. Something she never realized before. Aina had these terrible experiences with men, she has told her about and now after her broken engagement she had opted out of the race. She was never in the race, in the first place, jumping into bed with every available male was not called a relationship.

It came gradually to Olaronke over the next few days that she was not going to give up on Wande. She refused to accept it was over Grace or no Grace.
What annoyed her about her Friend's suggestion was that Aina compared herself with her. Whatever that befell Aina, was her doing. She brought it on herself. But she, Olaronke Adunni did everything right in her relationship and she deserved to enjoy it.

What Aina did not realize, Olaronke thought crossly as she sat before the mirror removing her make up. What Aina don't seem to understand was after making a success out of her career, she wanted to make a success out of her marriage. She was not a woman alone like her, she was married. And to be married only in name was a shame. Now, she was ready to fight for her marriage. All she had to do was corner the market, and chase away all competitors
