The express lanes of Hwy. 401 were closed in both directions for several hours in Mississauga early Saturday as drivers had to navigate around a herd of cattle after dozens of cows escaped a damaged transport truck.
The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday, when the driver of a cattle transport hit a guard rail in the westbound lanes approaching Hurontario St., OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.
The crash split one side of the trailer, allowing a number of cows to escape, he said.
Photographs and video posted to Twitter show several young-looking cows roaming the westbound express lanes.
OPP officers and members of Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services were on the scene to supervise the cattle.
Peel paramedics say the driver of the truck was transported to hospital in stable conditions.
It is unclear if any of the cows were injured in the crash.
The express lanes were closed in both direction as a result of this incident but lanes have since reopened.
