What the pastor asked you is not too much, you are the one that fails the test like many men will fail. If it were your own daughter or sister, you will want comfort for them for a start. So, many men are lazy this days , marry ladies to put them into suffering and only breeding future children into poverty. If wishes are horses, every man will ride. If it is easy with wishes to have money, why not wait for that wishes to matérialisé first before going into marriage.

At least, for a sign of readiness; you need a stable income + stories of you are hard working. Let that your hard working shows first in your pocket before you talk about marriage or wait a beat for that sustainable income before you allow marriage emotion to becloud your senses. So, many ladies outside there carrying responsibilities of catering for children alone because their husbands later found out not to have sustainable income or hustling abilities to cater for the children.

Some men ran out of the relationship when they discover they can't cope anymore with financial commitment, and then hang unprepared financial commitment on women. This has affected our societies as many children are born in poverty, many children died trying to come out of poverty they were born into while some even committed suicide when the suffering seem too much. Many entered into criminalities because they also lack proper moral upbringing and forced to achieve wealth by all means.

So, many choose outside there trying to cut corners because they were simply born into poverty and can't find easy way out of it even if they were promised 2 years to enjoy their moneys and loose their souls in hellfire forever. The wall of poverty is thicker than the wall of Jericho, only people that have God's direction through much patience, guidance and hard work are always break the poverty chain legitimately through God's help without shirting their lifespan in the process.

If you were financially ready to carry the responsibility, you will be bold to say it and convince the pastor. There is nothing bad in what the lady has done to let pastor ask you questions she couldn't ask you. That is wisdom. It is better for here to remain unmarried than pushing herself into uncertain try and error. If you love her, there is a way you will navigate that area with wisdom.

If your parents did it wrong, it is understandable; but try not to fall into the same mistakes of bringing children into poverty in this changing world.
