I feel you,man. It doesn't work always in all niches though. For illustration or graphic design showing former works is okay or the buyer looks at the delivered work previously to save one the stress.

Nice post on digital art. I agree with most of your points except 4 and 7.

No. 4 isn't entirely true it depends on the type of illustration and book style. Children's books you can get away with simple or mediocre skills but for comics and concept art for character design or fantasy environments you need to have those pro skills or forget it.

No. 7 is biased result from Business Review. Photoshop till now is still Adobe's most popular app for digital art globally in CG Art over Illustrator. Illustrator is great for logos,vector drawings,illustrations and inking for comics but Photoshop does all that with more flexibility. It has some Photoshop tools imported into it i.e Illustrator (which says a lot). Sketch Book Pro by Autodesk is very similar in features to Photoshop with every upgrade and simpler for those just getting into the game as newbies.
