Business › Why Your AI Output Sounds Fake: You Want It To Think For You, Not With You by DesignerWillie(op): 2:23pm On Jul 11
You know the feeling. You open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini because you have a deadline hanging over your head. Maybe it's an email to a tough client, a proposal for a new project, a social media post, or a pitch deck for a business venture here in Nigeria.

You type in your prompt, hit enter, and watch the text generate smoothly across your screen.

On the surface, it looks great. The grammar is flawless. The punctuation is perfect. There are no spelling mistakes. But as you read it back, something inside you cringes.

It doesn't sound like a human being wrote it. It certainly doesn't sound like you. It sounds robotic and generic, like it was written by someone who has never stepped foot in a real Nigerian marketplace.

It's polished, distant, and weirdly foreign. Every word is technically English, but it lacks a pulse, a vibe, a local context, something your Nigerian audience can relate to.

So what do you do? You go back to the prompt box and type:

"make it sound better"*

or

"add some Nigerian flavor.
"

We all know how that ends. The AI tries to throw in words like "abeg" or "chai" or simply paraphrases many sentences, which worsens everything.

If this is you, take a breath. This isn't a personal failure. You're not bad at prompting. You're hitting a structural wall in how these tools work — and once you understand why, you can work around it easily.

Why it sounds fake

Here's the part nobody explains properly. AI models don't know who you are, and they don't understand the specific texture of your audience.

These models are trained on an ocean of internet text — mostly Western, mostly academic, mostly corporate. When you ask AI to write something from scratch, it doesn't tap into your perspective or your logic. It calculates the most statistically probable sequence of words based on everything it has ever read. It pulls from the exact center of global internet noise. The result is smooth, safe, and belongs to nobody.

This is why a tech founder in Yaba, a real estate agent in Lekki, and a marketer in Toronto can all prompt the same AI with the same question and get back answers that sound almost the same.

Many people look at this and conclude AI is just a flawed tool, fine for rough drafts and nothing more. They accept the robotic tone as an unchangeable fact of life.

But that flaw is actually your opening, your unique selling point, your competitive advantage.

The specificity premium

Right now, timelines are filling up with identical AI-flavored fluff — LinkedIn, Twitter, even Facebook posts are starting to sound very similar.

When everyone is letting AI think "for" them, the average quality of writing online quietly drops dramatically.

That creates real room for you.

When a reader runs into text with actual rhythm, a specific opinion, an honest edge — they stop scrolling. They recognize a real voice precisely because it's becoming rare. Specificity is now a competitive advantage.

The people quietly winning with AI right now aren't the ones producing the most content. They're the ones who've figured out how to move faster without losing themselves in the process. They treat AI as a collaborator, not an author.

Here's how to make the best use of AI:

Step 1: Secure your first draft territory

The mistake happens before you even open your browser. If your workflow starts with opening an AI chat and typing "write a post about X," you've already lost the fight for your voice. The moment AI hands you that first generic outline, your brain quietly adapts to its structure. You stop creating and start editing a robot's thoughts instead.

Start somewhere AI can't reach you. Grab a pen and paper, or a plain notes app with no autocomplete or AI features turned on. This space is sacred.

Write your first draft the raw way — don't worry about grammar or flow, just get your actual ideas, arguments, and biases down. This rough draft is the only place your real thinking lives before anything else touches it. Once it's down, type it into soft copy. A dedicated notebook app, physical or digital, makes this a habit rather than a one-off — and this single habit will do more for your voice than any prompt trick below.

Step 2: Delegate the labor, protect the voice

Now bring in the AI — strictly as a low-level assistant, not a co-writer. Most people give it too much room here. "Make this better" invites a full rewrite using its own default vocabulary. You don't want something better. You want something cleaner.

Use this prompt:

> "Act as a strict copyeditor. Clean up the text below only for spelling errors, grammar mistakes, and clear sentence structure. Do not paraphrase, rewrite, or change my word choices, tone, or opinions. Preserve my voice exactly. If a sentence is genuinely unclear, don't rewrite it — flag it and ask me to clarify."

That last line matters. It gives the AI permission to ask instead of assume.

Step 3: The skeptical read-through

Once it comes back, switch hats — from writer to editor-in-chief. Read it slowly, out loud if you can.

Does this text still sound like something I would say to a friend in a discussion?

Did it slip in some unfamiliar words?

Did it overcomplicate a simple point, or flatten a nuanced one?

If yes to any of these, push back.

Don't manually fix it yet — make the AI fix it. Tell it: "the word in paragraph two feels too formal, give me plainer alternatives."

You're the boss here. The AI is staff, not the author.

At this point, honestly, your work is publishable. Most people can stop here and already be ahead of most AI-assisted content out there. But if you want to go further, stay with me.

Step 4: Structuring the rhythm

Sometimes your voice is present but the pacing feels flat. You can teach the AI a specific rhythm by giving it a real reference point.

Find an article or a post that felt genuinely alive to you. Paste it into a fresh AI session and try:

> "Here's a sample of writing style I admire: [paste text]. Study its sentence rhythm, pacing, and flow — not its topic or ideas. Now adjust the structural pacing of my draft below to match this rhythm, without changing my points or introducing new ideas: [paste your draft]."

Even better — use one of your own previous posts that performed well as the reference instead of someone else's. That way you're sharpening your own signature, not borrowing someone else's.

Step 5: This is where thinking-with AI begins

Open a completely fresh chat.

Paste your refined draft — but this time, don't ask it to write anything. Instead, give it real strategic context: who your audience is and what they're actually dealing with day to day, who you want to be seen as through this piece, what emotion you want the reader to feel by the end, and why this post needs to exist at all.

Then ask it to score the draft against that context:

> "Rate how well this draft achieves the goals I just described, on a scale of 1–10. Don't rewrite it for me. Instead, tell me specifically where it succeeds, where the connection with the reader drops, and what I could adjust to strengthen it."

When the feedback comes back, treat it the way you'd treat a smart, trusted colleague's opinion.

If it says a paragraph feels too academic and breaks the emotional thread, look at it yourself. Agree, and fix it.

If it doesn't, then disagree and keep it, because you know your audience needs that weight — You're not outsourcing judgment here. You're stress-testing your own.

Step 6: Refine, don't chase perfection

Repeat steps 4 and 5 if you need to, but know when to stop. The goal was never a flawless, sterile piece. It was a piece that's unmistakably *yours — sharpened, tightened, and stress-tested by a second pair of eyes that never gets tired of reading drafts.

The actual shift

Somewhere between step 1 and step 6, something changes. You stop asking AI to produce your thoughts, and start asking it to challenge them. That's the entire difference this post promised you.

Thinking-for-you is fast, automated, and forgettable — it's the robotic noise everyone's getting tired of scrolling past. Thinking-with-you takes more time, asks more of your attention, and forces you to use your own judgment. But it leaves behind something that's actually yours.

The people whose AI-assisted writing you admire aren't using a secret model or a magic prompt. They're protecting their draft, correcting without erasing, and using AI as a sparring partner instead of a ghostwriter.

If this way of thinking makes sense to you — if you're tired of the noise, the hype, and the endless performances and just want to get genuinely better at using these tools — I'm building something for exactly that. A small, practical, WhàtsApp-based community focused on real AI literacy: honest breakdowns, real use cases, and genuine conversations about AI. There's also going to be fun group activities.
