Nairaland / General / Breaking: UK Seeks Explanation About Nnamdi Kanu’s Status, Whereabouts From FG by Desmond39: 7:44am On Sep 30, 2017
The United Kingdom has asked the Federal Government to clarify the status and whereabouts of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

The British government said it had asked the government if the British national was alive or dead. However, it could not be immediately ascertained if the Federal Government had responded to the inquiries or not.

The Press Officer, UK high commission in Nigeria, Joe Abuku, stated that the inquiry followed reports that Kanu had been missing since September 14, 2017 when armed soldiers stormed his residence in Abia State.

Abuku said this in response to questions from Saturday PUNCH seeking to know UK’s concern on the missing IPOB leader.

“We are seeking urgent clarification from the Nigerian authorities about the status and whereabouts of Mr. Kanu, a British-Nigerian man, who has been reported missing since September 14,” Abuku stated in an email on Thursday.

Asked if the UK would strip Kanu of citizenship on account of the declaration by Nigeria that he was leading a terrorist organisation, the mission said it does not comment on individual cases.

“One of the conditions that can make the United Kingdom strip its citizen of nationality is if the person engages in a terrorist activity at home or abroad. And Kanu has dual citizenship and therefore a citizen of Nigeria and the UK,” the mission stated.

When asked if the UK supported the Nigerian government’s proscription of the IPOB, Abuku stated that the group was not a proscribed organisation under the British law.

“The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a proscribed organisation in the UK,” the mission spokesperson stressed.

However, when asked if the group was free to raise funds or hold rallies in Britain, Abuku said he would need to get an official response on that, but subsequently declined to respond to the question.

He also declined comment on whether the IPOB might be designated as a terrorist group or proscribed by the British authorities.

Education / UNN To Holds Post-utme Examination On October 3 by Desmond39: 9:18pm On Sep 29, 2017
University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is to conduct the 2017 post-University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from Oct. 3 to Oct. 9, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Charles Igwe, has said.

Igwe made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka, Enugu State, on Friday.

He said that measures had been put in place to ensure a successful 2017 screening examination.

“Qualified candidates for the exam are those who scored 200 and above, made UNN their choice university and have registered online for the exam.

“Invigilators, supervisors as well as other personnel that will be involved have been mobilised and are ready for the exam,” he said.

He said the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps would provide security for the exercise.

“The army, police, civil defence and SSS will help to ensure adequate security as they will patrol 24 hours in UNN and Nsukka town,’’ he said.

Igwe said that the university would provide hostel accommodation at the cost of N3,000 for two nights for candidates who had no relatives to accommodate them in Nsukka.

“The two nights include night of the day of arrival for the exam and night of the day the candidate writes the exam,” he said.

He appealed to Nsukka residents, especially the motorists, tricycle operators and motor-cyclists to assist candidates by directing them appropriately as some of them might be coming to Nsukka for the first time.

“We should treat candidates who will come from different states across the country as our sons, daughters, brothers and sisters.

“We should be fair and assist them instead of exploiting them financially by collecting N100 where we are supposed to collect N50 as transport fare.

“Candidates for the exam should also conduct themselves orderly before, during and after the exam as anyone caught in any form of violence or crime will be arrested by law enforcement agents.

“UNN management, staff and students wish candidates success in the screening exam,” he said

Politics / Buhari Is An Uncircumcised Philistine" Fani-kayode Blast Buhari by Desmond39: 2:10pm On Sep 24, 2017
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has called President Muhammadu Buhari “an uncircumcised philistine”.

In a new post on his personal website, Fani-Kayode uploaded Buhari’s image, along a lengthy write-up.

The full text reads: “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that has chosen to defy the armies of the Living God? You come against us with Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram, Arewa Youths and your brutal army but we come against you in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the Armies of Israel.

“Thy servant slew the lion and the bear and so it shall be for this uncircumcised Philistine that has chosen to defy the armies of the Living God.

“David had Prophet Samuel, Prophet Zadok and others.

“We have Prophet TB Joshua, Bishop Oyedepo and others. Our God is mighty in battle and He is doing a new thing! How can we lose?

“Once has it been written and twice has it been said that all power belongs to God and the heavens rule in the affairs of men.

“The children of darkness can NEVER overcome the children of light. The sons of slaves can NEVER overwhelm the sons of the Lord. The counsel of the ungodly can NEVER overule the counsel of God.

“No matter what comes our way, no matter how many trials and tribulations we pass through and no matter how much pain we suffer, in the end WE SHALL PREVAIL.

“Sons and daughters of the realm be strong and let not this merciless tyrant and his minions and servants intimidate you. God’s hand and His love is upon us. We are more than conquerers.”

Nairaland / General / Prison Meant For Only 116 People, Are Now Occupied By 600 Inmate - Prison Contro by Desmond39: 5:35pm On Sep 22, 2017
Nasararwa State Controller of Prisons, Mr. Ekwere Ekanem says the high level of congestion in prisons across the state is limiting efforts at reforming inmates to become better citizens.

Ekanem said in an interview in Lafia that the prison in Keffi built to serve 116 inmates currently houses over 600 prisoners.

He also said facilities at the five prisons across the state were over stretched, making it difficult for the service to effectively rehabilitate the inmates.

The controller stressed that the domestication of the Administration of Criminal Justice System Act 2015 would go a long way in decongesting prisons, as it has provisions for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

”If the Act is domesticated one does not need to go to prison because of a minor offence; with the Act, first offenders are not supposed to be sent to prisons as there is provision for alternatives,” Ekanem said.

He noted that under the Act, provisions had been made for juveniles, who were shielded from trial and detention but sanctioned in other ways, so as not to ruin their lives while serving jail term.

The controller said most of those in the prisons across the state were awaiting trial, and called on Judges to quickly dispense with cases, to help decongest the prisons.

Crime / She Can Never Date Another Man While I Am Still Alive"- Kenyan Man Commits Suici by Desmond39: 3:59pm On Sep 22, 2017
25 year old man known as Daniel Mwangi Alias from Tayari in Molo town, Nakuru County Kenya on Monday night, September 18, stabbed his 25-year-old girlfriend Cinta Nyambs to death before hanging himself.

According to an eye witness he had first attempted to stab himself, before ingesting pesticide. When the suicide attempts failed, he resorted to ending his life using a rope tied to the rafter.

Cinta Nyambs, was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds in the chest, neck and stomach.

Residents said Cinta and Dan had engaged in a heated argument Monday night before Cinta’s screams were heard emanating from Dan’s rental house.

According to Dan’s neighbour, Andrew Marwa, he heard Cinta’s screams at 7pm Monday, but could not gain access into Dan’s house since the house’s main door was made of steel, making it difficult to break the door open.

“At first, I thought the woman was screaming due to a robbery attack, only to be informed that Dan had killed his girlfriend before taking his life,” said Marwa.

One of the residents, who broke into Dan’s house after several attempts, said the two lovebirds were already dead by the time he got access into the house.

“The house was a mess; several broken clay cups were spread in the room; a strong smell of the pesticide had filled the air,” said Dan’s neighbour, Silas Awiti.

A suicide note left behind by Dan implied that Cinta was having a love affair with another man, which sparked the fatal jealousy.

“I love her so much she cannot date another man while I’m still alive. It is so stupid of me to do this (commit murder, suicide), but why should I live?” read the note in part.

Paul Itume, a village elder in Molo, said had the neighbours responded to Cinta’s screams in good time, her life would have been saved.

Itume expressed concern over the frequent cases of partners committing murder or suicide in Molo town, urging lovers to solve their differences amicably without resorting to violence.

Molo Deputy County Commissioner David Wanyonyi, who confirmed the incident said the loss of lives of Cinta and Dan was as a result of love gone sour.

Cinta, who got engaged to Dan in October, 2016, had graduated from Bondo Teachers’ Training College with a certificate in primary education.

Bodies of the two lovers were deposited at Molo Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

Nairaland / General / The World Richest Woman Liliane Bettencourt Dies At The Age Of 94 by Desmond39: 10:54pm On Sep 21, 2017
French businesswoman and billionaire Liliane Bettencourt, whose family founded L'Oreal and still owns the largest stake in the cosmetics giant, has died aged 94, her daughter said on Thursday.

Bettencourt, listed by Forbes as the world's richest woman, was the heiress to the beauty and cosmetics company her father founded a century ago as a maker of hair dye.

Her death opens a new phase for L'Oreal, France's fourth-largest listed company, altering the relationship it has with key shareholder Nestle, the Swiss food company.

Bettencourt and her children owned 33 percent of the company. Her daughter Francoise Bettencourt-Meyers said in a statement the family remained committed to L'Oreal and its management team.

"My mother left peacefully," Bettencourt-Meyers said, adding that she had died during Wednesday night at her home in Paris.

"I would like to reiterate, on behalf of our family, our entire commitment and loyalty to L'Oreal and to renew my confidence in its President Jean-Paul Agon and his teams worldwide."

Agon was appointed chairman and chief executive of L'Oreal in 2011.

Nestle, which owns a little over 23 percent of L'Oreal, had an agreement with the founding family stipulating that the two parties could not increase their stakes in the cosmetics group during Liliane Bettencourt's lifetime and for at least six months after her death.

The Swiss company has been a major investor since 1974, when Bettencourt entrusted nearly half of her own stake in the firm to Nestle in exchange for a three percent holding in the Swiss company. She took the move out of fear that L'Oreal might be nationalised if the Socialists came to power in France.

Activist hedge fund Third Point recently urged Nestle to sell down its stake.

Legal Battle

A Nestle spokeswoman on Thursday did not comment on the company's stake, only saying: "It's time to send our sincere condolences to Madame Bettencourt's family."

Bettencourt's net worth was estimated at $39.5 billion earlier this year by Forbes, making her the world's richest woman and among the 20 wealthiest people in the world.

She had been under the guardianship of family members since a court fight - known as the "Bettencourt affair" - ended with a ruling in 2011 that she was incapable of looking after her fortune because she suffered from dementia and had been exploited.

The case, which dogged the heiress for years, centred on Francois-Marie Banier, a celebrity photographer who befriended Bettencourt in the 1980s and received lavish gifts from her, including life insurance policies worth $400 million.

Another strand of the sprawling case involved allegations of illegal payments by Bettencourt to members of the French government associated with former president Nicolas Sarkozy in 2010. Sarkozy was eventually cleared in the case.

Paris-born Bettencourt joined her father Eugene Schueller's firm as an apprentice at the age of 15, mixing cosmetics and labelling bottles of shampoo.

She married French politician Andre Bettencourt in 1950 and inherited the family fortune when her father died in 1957.
