Education › 16 Top OAU Students In The 14/15 Edition Of The PTDF Scholarship Not Paid A Dime by destineguy(op): 8:41pm On Jan 02, 2017
Dear Nairaland,

My name is Adebayo and I am writing to reveal some truth to you and hoping it meets your good judgement to be announced in good faith, so that we can be paid our monies.

The journey began in April 2013(See attached) when about 10 top students each of the sciences and engineering department were given free PINS to apply for the Petroleum Trust Development Fund scholarship. I had just finished my 100 level with a CGPA that ensured that I was one of the invitees. We waited all through the year to hear back from them, but none came. We attributed it to the 6 months long ASUU strike that occurred that year.

In April 2014,we were asked to resend our documents which we did and by October of same year,we wrote the examination. By March 2015,results were out and I was shortlisted alongside 15 other students (attached).

On june 29,2015, a representative of PTDF came to my school (OAU) and delivered laptops to us as part of the award gifts. He left with our details and promised prompt payment of our fund which includes:

1) An amount of #250,000 annually to cover for accomodation, feeding, stipends etc.
2) Tution fee for each session as backed up by a payment teller.

It was however sad to see that PTDF has not paid a dime to us since receiving the letters, despite sending in account details and tuition fee costs for every session. The total accrued cost include.

1)2014/2015--- #250,000 + #30,000
2)2015/2016--- #250,000 + #30,000
3)2016/2017--- #250,000 + #30,000

Roughly about #840,000 for each student, for just three sessions. The scholarship was originally a four-session program particularly for 5-years engineering courses.

Presently,am in my finals (500L) with a semester left to go and Project financing has been a serious challenge. These kinds of awards are meant to make research financing much easier.

On 30th October,2015,(attached) I wrote a mail to PTDF inquiring about the cause of delay,no reply ever came. The only advocate we had was the erstwhile H.O.D. of geology who himself affirmed that the scholarship worth was over #1,000,000 for four years (but we missed a year).

Dear Seun and other mods/admins, kindly come to our aid as we do not have anyone else to run to, save the media and we believe in how you have been shaping lives through your campaigns. We can't bring ourselves to accept that the FGN hasn't disbursed the funds,as we were even suprised to hear that scholars after us had also been gifted laptops. Hence our question, will the FGN disburse funds for laptops and not do the same for the award fee? These and many more are the sketchy questions we have unanswered.

Kindly help us, Happy New 2017!!

Car Talk › The Prospect Of Bio-lubricant In Africa's Lubricant Industry by destineguy(op): 12:34pm On Jul 28, 2016
By: Lubestoday

Biolubricants are a small fraction of the lubricating oil market. They are most often found in applications where biodegradable lubricants are mandated due to the need to minimise the environmental impact caused by mineral-based lubricating oils where the lubricant may leak or be spilled. In particular, applications which utilise all-loss lubrication systems are highly suited to biolubricants.

In certain applications, biolubricants have been found to offer outcomes which are both superior and more cost effective than those offered by conventional mineral-based lubricating oils. It is however rather saddening that up till now, Africa has not yet shown great interest in this line of the Lubricant market, with all the goodies it brings, both to the environment and the machineries.

India, China, Brazil, and South Africa are witnessing a massive increase in vehicle ownership that is consequently resulting in an increased demand for bio-lubricants in these regions. The introduction of advanced technologies in the automotive sector and regulatory norms on Green House Gas (GHG) emissions provide further traction to the market.

Bio lubricants find application in wide-ranging industrial purposes through hydraulic oils, chain saw oils, metal working fluids, and industrial gear oil. Increased applications of bio-lubricants are expected to help the market grow steadily over a CAGR of 6% during the forecast period.

Key Advantages Offered by Bio Lubricant Products include an improvement in the efficiency and performance of Industrial machinery and automotive components. These Lubricants are biodegradable and non-toxic in nature, and hence, they pose 'no threat' to the environment. The production process of these lubricants is safe, and its disposal is harmless. Bio lubricants are excellent in lubricity that makes them suitable for industrial, as well as automotive sectors. Globally, bio lubricant products are in great demand because of the advantages they offer over mineral oil based lubricants.

Features of Bio-Lubricant Products
Please find attached the features of Bio-lubricant Products.

Top Companies in the Bio Lubricant Market

The market is highly competitive, and it is expected to intensify with an increase in product extensions and technological innovations. The Bio Lubricant Market is dominated by five major vendors:
1) BP
2) Cargill
3) China National Petroleum Corporation
4) Exxon Mobil
5) Shell

With increasing prospect in the Bio-Lubricant sector of the Lubricant industry, coupled with its immense environmental advantages, we expect more companies to explore this option in coming years. This may be a fall-out of emerging stricter environmental pollution laws.

By LubesToday

Through the course of the years which saw to the advancement of the Automobiles industry, resulting in the boom of the Lubricant sector. There has been a steady increase in Lubricants terminologies used by professionals in the industry to depict a scenario of event, define a concept or establish an argument. These terms are a must know for Lubricants users in order to fully understand the Lubricant industry.

A

Acid Number (AN) - Milligrams of KOH required in tests to neutralise all the acidic constituents present in a 1 gram sample of petroleum product. Also formerly called the Neutralisation Number, this property is often used to indicate the extent of contamination or oxidation of used oils.

Additive - Any material that is incorporated into a product at relatively low concentration to impart new properties or enhance existing properties.

Anti-foam Agent - Additive used to suppress the foaming tendency of petroleum products in service. May be a silicone oil to break up surface bubbles or a polymer to decrease the number of small entrained bubbles.

Anti-wear (AW) Agent - Additive that is active in preventing damage caused by occurrence of solid phase welding between sliding surfaces without local surface melting.

API Gravity - Arbitrary scale expressing, in degrees API, the specific gravity of liquid petroleum products.
Degrees API = 141.5 – 131.5 sp gr 60 / 60°F

API Service Classification - System of letter designations agreed on by API, SAE and ASTM to define broad classes of engine service. Also a system of service classifications for automotive gear lubricants. See>>>>>https://www.nairaland.com/3049087/all-mean#44705368

Ash - Metallic deposits formed in the combustion chamber and other engine parts during high-temperature operation.

B

Base Number (BN) - Quantity of hydrochloric (ASTM D974) or perchloric (ASTM D2896) acid expressed in milligrams of KOH equivalent that is required to neutralise all the basic constituents of a 1 gram sample of petroleum product. This property is used to indicate the capacity of an oil to counter the corrosive effects of acidic products of combustion.

BP - Abbreviation for British Pharmacopoeia usually used in reference to a purity standard for medicinal white oils, or white oils that will come into contact with foods.

Bright Stock - Refined, high viscosity lubricating oils usually made from residual stocks by suitable treatment, such as a combination of acid treatment or solvent extraction with dewaxing or clay finishing.

Brookfield Viscosity - Measure of the apparent viscosity of a non-Newtonian fluid as determined by a Brookfield viscometer at a controlled temperature and shear rate.

C

Cetane Index - A value calculated from the density and distillation mid-point temperature of a fuel, used as an alternative to cetane number to indicate relative diesel ignition quality.

Cetane Number - Measure of the ignition quality of a diesel fuel, as determined by a standard single cylinder test engine. The higher the Cetane Number, the easier a high speed diesel engine will start, and the less “white smoking” and “diesel knock” after start-up.

Cetane Number Improver - Additive which improves the Cetane Number of a diesel fuel.

Cleveland Open Cup (COC) Tester - Apparatus used to determine the flash and fire points of most petroleum products with flash points above 79°C.

Cloud Point - Temperature at which a noticeable cloud of crystals or other solid material appears when a sample is cooled under prescribed conditions.

Cold Cranking Simulator (CCS) - An intermediate shear rate viscometer that predicts the ability of an oil to permit satisfactory cranking speed in a cold engine.

Complex Grease - Lubricating grease thickened by a complex soap consisting of a normal soap and a complexing agent. Use of soap complexes gives products which have higher dropping points than similar lubricants made from normal soaps.

Corrosion Inhibitor - Additive that protects metal surfaces from chemical attack by water or other contaminants.

Best approach is to use the Synythetic blend (semi synthetic), that way you enjoy both the benefits of the synthetic & mineral engine oil at the same time.

My thoughts though.
As much as you are right in certain regards, sometimes going fully synthetic is the most viable option for some engine state.

Best regards.

When?

How about everytime that you can afford it?
If you paid conscious attention to what was written, you can't use a synthetic lubricant anytime you can afford it.
You make the switch when it's most favourable for your engine and then you stick with it.

Under what circumstances do synthetic lubricants not make sense? My understanding is that high-quality synthetic lubricants can result in cost savings and engine efficiency improvements through reduced friction/heat, engine wear, lubricant breakdowns, lubricant change intervals, etc. What is best way to make these choices?"

You are right about the benefits of synthetic oils. Reduced friction/heat, engine wear, lubricant breakdowns and lubricant change intervals can all lead to lower costs for repairs and even better gas mileage in some cases.

The real question is when to choose an expensive synthetic oil over a lower priced mineral oil. The truth is that it depends on the way the engine is used and how many miles it has.

Synthetic oils may not be ideal for a vehicle that has very high mileage (engine hours) and has only used mineral base oils during its lifespan. If you were to change the oil to a synthetic in this type of vehicle, it could lead to a number of problems. The oil’s natural detergent action could wash off varnish and other soot deposits that are sometimes left behind with certain mineral oils. This action of cleaning deposits off cylinder walls not only can cause the engine to use more oil but also can reduce cylinder wall thickness and allow small amounts of oil to bypass the piston rings and burn up in the cylinder head.

In older cars, synthetic oils can even affect the seals or elastomers, causing them to shrink and leak. Therefore, continuing to use the same mineral oil is a good idea in many situations.

On the other hand, synthetic oils are a wise choice for vehicles and engines that experience frequent stops and starts, operate in extreme heat and cold, or have extended lengths of service between oil changes.

If you were to buy a new vehicle, you should consider using a high-quality synthetic oil from the start. This can make a big difference in the life of the engine, especially if you use the oil in conjunction with a high-grade, low-micron filter.
