KALHITA ( Continuation )
After Anna was being raped. Her mother was mad at her neighbor who couldn't watch over her.

Her mother took the case very serious and Jimmy and his friends were arrested.

At this I was astonished. The police arresting the young boys? Because of sexual assault?

I wished my community Ndimugu was like this. Where women and the helpless are being helped and cared for. Tears rolled down my ears.

I remembered when I was being raped my and nobody could come for my rescue. I was even threatened to be homeless. I had to keep silent. My thoughts took all over me..

ANNA: Kal!!!!

Anna called out on me.

I'm sorry my dear. I was just thinking about something, my apologies for not paying attention to you. I replied.

ANNA: It's cool Kal.
She then continued her story..

After some months of going through emotional trauma. She met a man who was interested in getting married to her mother.

During weekends he'll come over to the house. Whenever he's coming, he buys gifts for Anna. Different gifts and expensive ones at that.

While doing this, he was slowly and carefully touching Anna on her private parts. Not still thinking about anything, she was comfortable with him because she was seeing him as a member of the family, infact as a father.

One faithful day. Anna's mother traveled to return in two days time. The night breaking to the day Anna's mother was meant to come back. The man forcefully slept with her.

She was totally helpless. Night hours, people were deeply asleep and busy with other things.

Very early in the morning. He took his properties and ran away.

ANNA: My mother came back and met me lying lifeless.
She immediately took me to the hospital. The bleeding was much and the pain was like that of someone who's in hell!!!!!!!! I was in the hospital for two weeks.

She cried.

I tried consoling her, but she kept on crying for hours. Her face was reflecting as a flame coming from a crystal burning.

Tired and helpless. She slept off on my shoulder.

Please stay tuned.

Several weeks later. Anna and I became best friends. I loved her so much.

She's smart academically, hardworking, always independent not minding she's still a teenager.

She taught me a lot of things and exposed me to things about relationship.

Talking about her relationship. Anna being a very beautiful girl lost her dad at a very tender age. Her dad was a soldier who died in a battle, which took place between their country and their neighboring country because of a land which had great nutrients and resources. The both countries needed it for production and upkeep of the society.

Being the only child of a widow. Her mother left her in the care of her neighbor who was working from home with a company in Germany.

But she wasn't paying much attention towards Anna.
At age 10, she was sexually molested by some group of boys who played basketball in the nearby court in the estate where she was leaving.

She was threatened to be killed if she ever tell anyone about what happened.
She never told the mother nor anyone because of fear.

After going through the trauma for some months. She started having feelings for his classmate.

Jimmy was a cool and quiet type in the class, though smart but not as Anna.
They admired each other alot which lead to a relationship..

Two weeks of the relationship, after Jimmy had an intimacy with her. Jimmy collided with his three friends to have another intimacy with her. She rejected the offer.

A day came when Jimmy was absent from school, she went to check on him. Getting there, she saw the friends alone at home with Jimmy.

Not thinking of anything, she innocently walked in, seeing Jimmy on the bed, dressed half naked. Jimmy was also behaving weird and tried to kiss Anna. Out of curiosity, she refused him kissing her. Forcing himself on her, she tries to run, the three friends blocked her and lifted up her feet off from the floor and launched her on the bed.
The four of them slept with her and there was no saviour to rescue her.

What a pity. She paused and smiled.

That evening we spent a quality time with Anna and Smith. They showed us around the school premises. The school sport arena, well decorated with famous sportsmen in the world.

The school amphitheatre was such a beauty to behold.

I was lost looking at the beauty of nature when we got to the school garden, called BEAUTIFUL.

In this garden, students come around almost every day during their leisure.
Those you're into art made beautiful artworks when they come to the garden .

Lovers and families comes to have a beautiful time .
Later that evening as well . We went to the school award house.
I was wondering what the award house will look like .

My instinct wasn't wrong though. Though I Saw something that kept me on high expectations.

Pictures of people who did excellently well we're being placed on the walls with their names and locality.

I saw most of black people, who did amazing exploits academically, most of them were girls.

I told myself that I was going to make it , far better than her. After that day the energy I put into my studies doubled. I found reading so interesting. I made more friends, both males and females.

Anna was always there for me. In showing me more places and things to do as a lady so I can appear good to the public.

Within a month. My lifestyle changed, mindset and appearance changed.

I smiled and told myself, welcome to London .

After meeting with Mr. Woodson and his team. I was allowed to travel to Britain with them for school, but it remained a secret because the council of chiefs will definitely decline it. We finally left Ndimugu community to Britain. It was a day in my life that I’ll never forget. On our journey to Britain, we were being told to be courageous and not fear anything. We are heading to have a good life in Britain and bring light and civilization back to our community. We were being told to study anything we want in the school when we arrive. The hunger I have in helping my people most especially treating the sickness that was going rampant in my killing, a deadly sickness that they don’t know the course. Though the soothsayers said it a normal sickness that will go anytime from the land.
My experience flying to Britain was great. I felt like I’m on top of the world. I could feel my dreams coming to pass already. I felt like a king who has dominion over his people and even the spirits. I was like a child on the hands of his mother, who had anything he wanted. Like the birds sing for joy and bring melodious songs, I had such joy swimming inside of joy. An unexplained joy crawled into my life. This is definitely a turn around in my life .

When we got to Britain. We were being taken to our lodge. I was the only female among my friends. The feeling was great. I felt special and unique. I noticed a lot of people were looking at us. Most especially our color. Being an African, our color was quite different from the rest of the people.

We dropped our back in the lodge and came out to see things for ourselves and also get familiar with the environment.
ANNA: Hi. ( She waved at me ). My name is Anna.
I couldn’t hear her clearly, she was speaking from her nose. I wandered within me.
KALHITA: I’m Kalhita.
ANNA: what’s Kalhita. What’s the meaning?
KALHITA: it means Joy is Coming.
ANNA: ( smiles). Nice name. Can I call you Joy?
KALHITA( Nods her head in agreement). Yes you can
ANNA: Alright. Nice to meet you.
She brought her hand for a shake, I responded immediately.

After some few seconds, her friend Smith came around.
SMITH: Hey Anna. These are new faces. Who are they ?
ANNA: This is Joy.( tapping my shoulder)
SMITH: ( Putting a beautiful smile ). Hi I’m Smith Josh. You look beautiful.
KALHITA: Thank you. You’re handsome too.
SMITH : Oh really? Can we be friends?
I turned and looked at my brothers without giving a word.

A year after we stopped attending classes privately, the town crier announced to the villagers that the white men were coming to our community to select somebody students they’ll give scholarship to study outside the country. I was excited about it but on the contrary, women aren’t permitted to school. I drafted some plans on how to achieve it. Many a time I tried those plans but nothing happened.
The day finally came when the white men came to our community. Their appearance was like a fowl that was ready to be eaten, the villagers ran away because of their appearance and the way they talk. Majority of the people couldn’t understand what they were saying.
Only some educated people in the community understood them and were interpreting it for the villagers. They gave arms to the less privileged, they treated people with all kinds of diseases for free. They introduce new foods and drinks. Clothes and other things. I was so much interested in what they were doing which has been my greatest desire to help my community.
During their stay in Ndimugu community, people were so happy, the rate of death decreased, food and other services were rampant. They went to the school were boys were only allowed to attend. They tried changing our people’s ideology concerning the act or the restriction against female education m, but our people rejected and threatened to kill them or send them back if they ever repeat such again.
It was time for the white men to go back, they’ selected five boys who were good academically, three boys who were talented in sports.
I was really angry with myself because I wasn’t among them and this has been my greatest desire. A day before they left the white men left my community. I went to them at night.

Few seconds later a man opened the door and I became speechless.
MR. WOODSON: Who are you young lady?
KALHITA: I'm Kalhita.
MR.WOODSON: Kalhitahuh What's Kalhita?
KALHITA: It means joy is coming.
MR. WOODSON: Argh!! Please come in
KALHITA: Thanks sir.
MR.WOODSON: So what brought you here by this time of the night?
KALHITA: Sir, I have this great passion of setting my free from this sickness that kills them. Mostly importantly I really have this passion of ending misogyny in my community and beyond. Women are meant to have... ( He interrupts me)
MR.WOODSON: What misogyny are you talking about?
I haven't noticed anything like that here
KALHITA: Yes sir. Even my mother is a victim of it. I am a victim of it. After my father died, my uncle wanted to take over, but my mum disagreed with him. So my mum fell ill till death and my uncle never bothered, rather he chased me out. Another victim I know is Mr. Kuti's wife. Her husband treats her like a slave, she doesn't have a say in the family. Women are being molested everyday and the chiefs of council absolutely does nothing over it. I am worried her. Another issue here is that women are not allowed to attend education in our local school. That was why you and your team were rebuked some weeks ago.
MR.WOODSON: So how did you acquire yours ?
KALHITA: I joined Mr. Kuti's daughter, Onita in learning, which was done secretly without the knowledge of anyone. Mr. Kuti did it for her because she is the only daughter and Mr. Kuti loves her so much. So when I started serving them, Onita and I became good friends, so she allowed me to join her in her class. Since then, my hunger to help my community grew the more. My teacher told us about things like electricity, television, mobile phone, cars and many other beautiful things one can think of. If this is all I can do for my people, I'll be grateful to the owner of my life. So I'm here to plead with you to take me along with others to study.

Months later after I joined Onita in her class, I began to read and write. I experienced an unusual joy, I felt like I’ve made it already.
KALHITA: Waw, so this is possible, I can now read and write, I’m a god, I’m going to be celebrated one day. I feel all things are possible. I’m creative because I’m a small god. I see myself healing people in my community and beyond. I see myself feeding people of different languages and colors. Kings and princes are coming for me. ( smiles), my name is KALHITA, Joy is coming. I overcome things and I break boundaries. I bring light to my community and women will be equal with men.

I kept declaring these words daily. I imagined schooling outside my country. I prayed earnestly for this to come to pass in my life.
Two years later, Mr. Uwemo died of heartbreak, his wife was raped right before his presence, he was forced to sleep with his first daughter who was about to get married in a week time. The killing of his wife and of course his action towards his daughter kept him thinking, he refused eating for days. On a Monday morning, he fell while walking towards his bathroom. I was bitterly angry within myself because I had a lot to ask and learn from him. I stopped attending the class because the new teacher was too harsh and he hated women as well. He believed that women are meant to be slaves, inferior beings and had no positive thing to offer in life rather than being in the kitchen and bearing children.
At some point he had a quarrel with Onita because he was always blaspheming women, including Onita’s mother whom he used as an example.
It’s not my getting married to a wealthy man, your education and life ends in the kitchen, Mrs. Kuti is a perfect example, said the teacher to Onita.
ONITA: You’re the biggest fool of all time Mr. Teacher. That was how she ended the school her father paid for.

It was another day for Onita to go for her class, I went with her. But her teacher Mr. Uwemo refused me from joining them.
MR. UWEMO: No ! Onita how could you ?
ONITA: How could I what ?
See she’s my friend and I take her like a sister. If she doesn’t join me , I’m not gonna continue with the class again
MR.UWEMO: What will your father say if he finds out?
ONITA: And who’s going to tell him? You ?
KALHITA : Umm ! I think.....
ONITA( interrupts): Kalhita you are not saying anything here. And to you Mr, if she’s not joining me, then get ready to loose your job.
MR.UWEMO: It hasn’t gotten to that Oni, alright let her join you so far you make sure that your father doesn’t find out. You know what will happen, you both are ladies.
ONITA: Don’t worry Mr. I’m in control here.
She looked at me with a hug smile.
We started the class but it was as if I wasn’t picking up anything that was going on. I was lost like a lamp who’s in search of its way back home. Onita noticed it and promised to teach me more when we get home.
Of a truth, I found learning so interesting and fun. I came to realize that for a nation or group of people to witness rapid and steady change of greatness, send them to school. Education is the best investment a man can make for his family, when he’s gone , the children will reap it. A people with illiterates every can’t see the light of the world. I started imagining things I never thought about in my entire world. I remembered one of our classes where Mr. Uwemo talked about electricity, the cars in the world, television and other innovations that people out there enjoy and have access to because of education. He talked about the mobile phone which gives you access to communicate with people wherever they are. He said with the mobile phone, you can make researches, make friends and reach out to others anytime any day. Oh my gosh, am I dreaming?
Education!!!!! I’ll get to the end of it and make a change.

I pleaded with Lita Mr. Kuti’s son to stop what he was doing, he didn’t. I was really molested, beaten by him and injuries were all over my body.
Some minutes later after the incident, Mrs. Kuti came back home and I reported to her, but she was helpless as well. Men were considered superior over women in every ramifications of life. I had no alternative than reporting to Mr. Kuti, who in return supported his son and threatened to chase me out of his house if I ever tell anyone of what happened.
But in all of that, I found love and friendship with Onita, Mr. Kuti’s only daughter. Mr. Kuti loves her so much that he does anything she want. Because women were not allowed to attend the village school, Mr. Kuti employed a teacher for Onita. He comes everyday to teach Onita English and other subjects. Because of our love and friendship, she was open and honest with me, she told me things her father does with other rich men in the community. The rituals they perform, the injustice, favoritism, and other illegal activities they carry out.
One thing Onita really emphasized on was a case that took place in Ndimugu community. A family of six girls were being raped and burnt in their house by a well known terrorist who once terrorized the entire community and the neighborhood as well.
When they caught Aazi, the terrorist, he bribed his way out from the community council and they told him to leave the community for now and come back in the next four or five years. Onita emphasized on the misogyny that was really going on in Ndimugu community. She wept so bitterly and I tried to console her.
After narrating her to me , I told her I want to join her in her school as well, she was mute for some times, she then looked at me and gave me a smile and said YES!!!!

After taking the delicious meal that Mrs. Kuti served me, I was lost in deep thought. I was remembering several incidents that occurred in Ndimugu community, the hatred and maltreatment towards women.
I started planning and drawing out plans to see I end it in my time so the unborn children won’t suffer from the same shame and agony women are facing in my community. I thought of acquiring education, but how will it come to pass when women aren’t allowed to school.
I remembered older women who are in the community and are being called old witch by men.
After some minutes while I was lost in my thought, Mr. Kuti called me to come see him. I died within me. I thought I was done here on earth, I thought of him raping me. I pleaded with him for me to go, but he spoke warmly to. At the end of my drama, he asked me what I want in this life. I told him I need education, and a shelter. He asked me why I want education knowing fully well it’s for the male children. I told him I was interested in bringing a remedy to the sickness that was affecting and killing people in our community, he was quite for some moment, then finally spoke up as if he is being threatened, NO!!
I asked no for what he said I can’t get the education but I’m allowed to stay in his house, I was happy at the first place for the shelter I’ve gotten, and on the other hand, I wasn’t happy too. I thanked him for his care towards me and left him to be alone.
Two days in Mr.Kuti’s house, something tragic happened to me. It was on a day I was in the kitchen preparing some food items for Mrs. Kuti. I bent down to take a pot I wanted to wash, someone grabbed me immediately. The manner in which he held me got me scared and I screamed for help. Turning to see Mr. Kuti’s first son all over my body. I tried screaming for help, but he told me that nobody was around, my cry and pleading won’t solve the matter. Before I knew what was happening, he tored my clothes and force me to sex.

After my prayer, I stood up to go to Mrs Uvote shop. When I got closer, I saw people crowding at Mrs Uvote restaurant. I wondered what she has cooked that gathered such number of people. Getting more closer I started hearing “ kill her, kill her”. I was wondering who they wants to kill, maybe they just caught a criminal. When I got there, there was no way for me to see through what was happening inside. So I asked a lady what was happening. She told me that they found a human part in Mrs Uvote kitchen. A customer who went to the backyard to urinate mistakenly kicked a bucket, when he turned, he saw the human body that was in the bucket, so he raised an alert out of fear and people gathered together to question Mrs Uvote.
KALHITA: So who brought the human parts for her?
She has refused saying anything about what has happened. Meanwhile the king and his cabinet are on their way here, they want to banish her from our community.
I was left in deep thought, did Mrs Uvote actually did this or it’s a plan to ruin her image and stop her business. I thought of many other incidents that has happened in the community where other women were being humiliated in different occasions. I cried bitterly because I was hungry and never knew where else to go. At the end of day, Mrs Uvote was being banished from NDIMUGU community.

People cried for her, men and women, children and the old ones.
Things like this happen when a man has asked a lady to go to bed with him and she refuses, he will then look for a way to punish her, in most cases, the woman is helpless, and the man is has a say in the community. Maybe his rich or he’s part of the cabinet in the community.
This left me thinking for days, how to stop this marginalization amongs us. We are one people, in the same community, so why are women being treated so badly. We don’t have access to school, our young girls are being given to marriage by force.

After the incident that happened to Mrs. Uvote, I came across a man in the community, he has so much influence in the community that wherever he goes, people praises him. I met him on my way from Mrs. Uvote restaurant. I was sitting close to the road when he was passing by, he looked at me in a very awful way and I got scared, I wondered why he was staring at me in that manner, my instinct told me that he wants to make his wife, which got me afraid the money and I rebuked him. He came closer and noticed that I was frightened by his presence. I thought of running but I had no atom of strength within me.
KUTI: Hey young lady, it’s everything alright with you?
KALHITA; Argh!!!! Yes sir I’m fine ( short of words)
KUTI: You look worried, who are you?
KALHITA: Umm I’m fine tho just hungry sir! My name is Kalhita, late Tataki daughter.
KUFI: ( Hissed) oh nice, I heard your mother is dead as well, who’s catering for you then, and why are you sitting here alone by this time?
KALHITA: Yes sir, I lost my mother some weeks ago. I’m just here, I’m hungry. I don’t know where and who to meet right now. Please sir help me, I will
KUTI( interrupts): it’s fine, stand up, come with me.
I was happy to an extent but was also afraid, I never knew where he was taking me to. At last we arrived at his place. Mr. Kuti’s house is one of the finest in Ndimugu community. My heart was panting, fear descended on me, I turned around, I didn’t see anyone in his house. I thought of different things at the same time. Fear swept my feet, I thought of rape, sacrifice, my heart left me, then suddenly I saw his wife who was looking like a maid, she came and bowed before her husband. I was lost in thought again, why will a man’s wife be looking this way, not just an ordinary man, an influential and powerful man in the community, of a truth, women were being treated so badly in Ndimugu community. Mr. Kuti instructed her to serve me a meal. I ate the food in sorrow.

After the incident that happened between Mrs Uvote and I, I was being beaten so mercilessly and got sacked from working for her as well.
Life was beginning to show me a different dimension of life.
I went from places to places, looking for where to eat and rest my head. Several times of trials and no positivity, I had to go back to my uncle for shelter and food.
My experience with him kept me wondering if he was actually my fathers’ brother

UNCLE PAMPI: Little witch what are you looking for in my house?
KALHITA: Good evening uncle.
UNCLE PAMPI: What is good about the evening?
How did you find your way into my house?
Now listen very good. I don’t want to ever see you in my house again till your death. You have no right in this family. But if you really want to be part of this family, wake your dead parents to come give you a brother. But right now, leave and never come back to this compound.
KALHITA: But uncle, I’m hungry.
UNCLE PAMPI( INTERRUPTS): Come and eat me nah. You’ve seen your lunch, come and eat my flesh. Please leave my compound( he pushed me away). Nothing good will ever come out of you just like your miserable parents. ( Tears rolled down my eyes)

I left my Uncle’s compound in sorrow and bitterness of heart. I couldn’t take the last word he spoke to me. I knelt down to make some prayers.

KALHITA ( Kneeling down): I know there’s a GOD somewhere who created me, You know me better than I know myself. Please change my situation around, don’t let my enemies triumph over me. Change my destiny, use me to bring liberation and light to the people of NDIMUGU. I desire to change lives and stop the suffering and intimidation’s that our girls and mothers face. Please do it for, I pray You.

KALHITA

My name is Kalhita, I’m the only child of my parents, but currently an orphan. My father died the two days before I was born. According to the story, his brother killed him over an issue they had because of a piece of land at the open square in my village. My mother was left all alone to care for herself and her unborn baby.

My father was buried the same day as the culture demands.

So after I was born, my mum called me KALHITA, which means JOY IS COMING.

I grew up among friends who mocked me because my mother couldn’t afford everything we needed to live a good life. Thirteen years of my life, I lost my mother. She died of a sickness that was infecting people in my community which they called OLOKA.

OLOKA was killing people on daily basis, young, old, infant, rich , poor.
My mother tried her best to survive for me, but all to no avail.

After she was buried. My uncle who killed my father chased me out of my father’s house, because my father doesn’t have a male child.
I left my fathers’ house in sorrow.
I promised myself to fulfill my name.

After my mother’s death, I went to serve a woman who cooks in the village market for workers. She employed me, promising to feed me daily. I accepted the offer because I needed food to survive.

UVOTE: Kalhita!!!!!
KALHITA: Yes ma

I went to answer her. It was actually the first day of me serving her.

UVOTE: Go to my house, you’ll see the firewood I tied up at my backyard. Bring it immediately.
KALHITA: Alright ma

I hastened up to avoid her scolding at me. When I got to her compound, I noticed her back window was open. I never gave it a thought though. I took the firewood and started heading back to her business center.
When I got there, I was afraid of telling her what happened.

So after the work and selling. She got home and found her belongings being taken away. Her money and her jewelries were all gone.
