A plate of porridge and wolves in sheep clothing Essentially, the most important offering of Democracy is that it offers us to be an unarmed sentry at the gate of societal Governance, an invaluable and undeniable right to be the ombudsman of our own Destiny - an unalienable right to self determination which gives a chance and choice of being opinionated and an opportunity to pragmatically act on these opinions within the confines of the limitations the constitution offers. However, we also owe ourselves, our collective destiny, the future generations and to posterity to resist and decline any attempt by self seeking and self serving persons whose ingloriously subtle aim is to use us as pawns in their aspirations to wrest power from the current Government. History repeats itself to our shame, a lesson we have refused to learn, the mistake of 2015 is simple and straightforward; a successful attempt to remove Jonathan from office in place of anybody else, no matter how questionable their antecedents is, and so we ended up with an ethnically prejudiced and economic dilettantes whose subtle support and glaring promotion of the northern hegemony is more than obvious. The archetypal biblical allusion of a plate of porridge exchanged for a birthright to quell the sharp twangs of hunger is a perfect illustration of how over and over we have consciously sold our socio-economic birthright and collective prosperity for short term benefits. More shameful is the newly formed Coalition for Nigeria movement by ex- president Olusegun Obasanjo,a self proclaimed ombudsman to check the anachronistic paternalistic style of this government but whose antidote turned out to be a gathering of wolves in sheep clothing. An ironic and poetically sarcastic way of putting a new wine in an old wine skin. Can a Leopard change its skin? Or a Zebra its stripes? Should we be fooled every four years? Do we leave our destiny as Youths into the hands of this gerontocrats? It's time to get involved as youths, we can no longer afford to be a bystander . Let's be concerned citizens because the highest office in the land is the office of the citizen! |
red February is over
and its cunning Trojan gift
wrapped in the colours of blood February is red; red wrappers for boys toys that bring foolish girls joy February is red; reddish skirts stained with ink from the pen between a boy's towers Do not shed red tears Awero he came he saw he conquered, you're broken: broken into an unbreakable stream of tears Saint Valentine has stained our stale senses into seamy scenting sins he came like locusts and lapped her Nile into a stench of redness red is war; It's the colour of a man not 50 shades of grey Awero, do not think the noose a consolation, be like Christ and carry your cross but! do not forget yuppie, how he coloured you red with the lips of Romeo, a trip to Rome and Paradise in Paris how he fanned a volcano into your restless ravine and hung you on the spoils of his war Awero, when your protruded belly gives birth to a bouncing mistake and you sing; Who sat and watched my infant head.... do not forget this chorus; the chorus from a broken Valentine |

Night
Mother night is lapping;
Sleepy cheeks, dozing faces, Mother night is patting; Cells drenched in garment of tiredness, Troublesome children fighting in their dreams. Mother night is petting; that man who drank with the gods of wine, that woman who jumps from house to house, Like a bee scouting for nectar Day like a choleric Father is waiting; for the rising of the sun, the death of Night, the wake of a laborious day... |

*ÀBÈNÍ* ( 10 years of solitude) Àbèní,today is that day Streams ceased to flow, Green leaves turned brown And birds stopped to sing Àbèní, today I lie Not on soft wooly beds But on sharp rocky stones In remembrance of that day That day was ten years ago Under the dongoyaro tree Where we sat on dead brown leaves As the sun kissed our faces That day you broke our oath For you were betrothed to Àrèmú Àrèmú, my childhood friend Who I trusted more than myself Àbèní, this ten years of solitude Are like mist that veils distant hills For my streams of love have ceased to flow Green leaves in my heart have lost colour And the birds that sing of love sing no more Àbèní, I Olusegun , Omo bábà olóde( the son of the hunter) long for your return #O.A.O |
