Preparedness It is no longer news that the world is battling with the Novel Coronavirus pandemic. The news is how Nepotism, Negligence, and Corruption is making the pandemic spread like a raging inferno in Nigeria. Since 27 February 2020, when an Italian citizen tested positive for the COVID-19 virus in Lagos, one would have expected the various states and the Federal government to swing into action on how to tackle the pandemic. But the opposite was the case. The outbreak of COVID-19 has revealed how unprepared the country is in terms of emergency and infectious disease management. Only Lagos state among the thirty-six states in the country showed a certain degree of preparedness. The responded to the outbreak of the pandemic by building isolation centers across the state though not well equipped as it ought to. Negligence There were calls on the federal government to close all the borders (both land and air) entry the country. A call the Federal government refused to consider until the COVID-19 reported case rose geometrically. Lock down Though on the 30th of March 2020, President Muhammadu Buhari in his National address ordered a total lockdown of Lagos, Abuja, and Ogun State for an initial 14 days. He later added another 14 days due to the increase in the number of reported cases. Meanwhile, other states like Ekiti, Osun, and Kaduna also went on total lockdown to forestall the spread of Coronavirus into the states but the Corruption rampant in the nation’s security apparatus let those states down. Corruption Inter-state traveling quickly became a revenue source for the security personnel on duty to prevent commuters from crossing into those state on lockdown. They instead charge commuters some fee and grant them express passage. As a result of this negligence and corruption, infected people from other states came into states with a clean record of health as it was seen in Ekiti. Impunity Impunity on the part of uniformed men is also a key factor in the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria. An instance is the case of an infected policeman who entered Ondo state from Edo even while the two states were on lockdown. Recently reported in Ekiti is another case where an infected wife of a soldier traveled from Katsina to Oye Ekiti. The security men that are supposed to enforce the lockdown orders are the most culpable for breaking the order. Some governors went as far as debunking the seriousness of COVID-19 pandemic until they became victims/Survivals. As of today, Nigeria has 2,802 reported cases of Coronavirus, with 93 deaths and 417 recoveries. While the total confirmed cases worldwide are 3.62 million with 253,000 deaths recorded. https://www.goalgeta.com/how-nepotism-corruption-and-negligence-is-stoking-the-fire-of-covid-19-in-nigeria/ |
