Rap Battles / Re: A Basic Guide To Text Battling by Dhany110: 10:45am On Jan 04, 2013
ojoawo: This will be a quick guide to writing creatively as i know it. Any quoted lines are my personal material unless cited otherwise, however, I may have taken some concepts from other emcees to provide the BEST example i could...therefore, i do not take credit for all inventing all concepts shown. DO NOT TAKE THE EXAMPLES OFFERED. Instead, use them as a guide to write your own.

Lets start with some basic terminology.
CHAPTER 1: COMMON TERMINOLOGY

Punches: A diss to your opponent...any rhyming statement used to put down or belittle your opponent.

Personals: A punch that is tailored directly to
your opponent...this punch would not work (or not be as effective) against anyone but the emcee its directed at.

Multies: Rhyming more than one sylablle in a
bar.
Example...
without multies:
im sicker than flus...your guna get smacked
and even if i leave...i will be right back

with multies:
i have abominable spits, punches leave you
crawlin and shit
your all up in this...but male or female we still call you a bitch

Knockout: On most sites, this is winning a
battle 3 votes to 0 votes.

TKO: The same, only 4 votes to 1 vote.

D/R: Unfair, biased voting.

Biting: Stealing material from other emcees.
....the rest you should be able to pick up along
the way.

CHAPTER 2: WORDPLAY
Wordplay: Clever and witty sayings that allow you to get your meaning across in an original, creative, dopeasfuckinshit way.

Using:
Metaphors: Likening your opponent or yourself to something not usually associated with the topic...WITHOUT using like or as! example:

"I'm a beast."

^obviously the person speaking is not actually a beast. Yet this very basic metaphor portrays an image of ferociousness unmatched in the average human.

"Your verses are shit."
^a very very basic, played metaphor...of course, the persons verses aren't really shit...but it infer's that that is the type of quality they have.

Similie: A type of metaphor more commonly used...this is WITH using like or as.
"Syko's like Alaska, nobody thinks he should βε̲ a part of U.S.!!"
The emcee being dissed (Syko) is part of a crew called "U.S.".
In this bar (Syko) is being compared to Alaska because, according to the emcee writing the bar, no one thinks Alaska should be a part of the United States...this relates to Syko because no one thinks he should be a part of US...the crew.

Synynom: This is the rappers best friend...Synynoms are words with double meanings...you can use both meanings Ƭõ̸̳͡ phrase a creative punch.

"Promatic got upset and smashed his mics
together...he STILL couldnt get any feedback!"
-this is using the synyno (feedback)...feedback
means constructive criticism on a written piece...however when you put two mics close together, you get a different kind of feedback...This bar is inferring that the emcee is indeed sooooo wack...not even putting mics together will get him "Feedback"

Wordsmithing: This is a more complex form of wordplay...its combining words into different words through similar sounds.
"hoped his punches would land "cleanly"...but they came off soap-layed out!"
This punch combines soap and layed...to make "so played"...it also uses the fact that "clean" is associated with soap. In this sense, its dissing him on several levels.

1. His punches are so played out.
2. He is stupid enough to believe he should use
"soap" for his punches to land "cleanly"

Common Phrases Flip: This is a personal favourite of mine...taking a commonly said phrase, and creatively flipping it to diss your opponent.

"Seems he doesnt know whats good for him....is sorta shitty for me."

-that punch is taking the saying "he doesn't
know whats good for him" and flipping it to say "his good stuff is my bad stuff" this unexpected turn results in a creative punchline.

And...last but not least

The Combination: Using several instances of
wordplay in a single bar.

"so he has no choice but to bow to da feet...like standin on the front of a boat!"
this is using wordsmithing "da feet/defeat"
synynom "bow as in a deep nod/bow the front part of the boat" and similie "like standing on the front of a boat"...often punches like this will go over an unexperianed head...so use with caution.

CHAPTER 3: QUICK TIPS
To close this little tutorial off, i'd like to drop a few battling tips.

1. Write to your audiance...do not drop streeeetttched bars on a site that favours concise bars...and vice versa.

2. Don't battle at a site renowned for CDR (chronic dick ride) this is a frustrating, fruitless experiance.

3. Battle the best emcees that you have a
chance with!

4. DO NOT DISREGARD SET-UP LINES!!! I can't stress that enough, make sure your set-up is a mini punch or a dope multi scheme...or
introduces to concept of a complex punch.

5. Write to your level...don't try to use
combination wordplay after a month of writing, you'll never think of anything...start basic but creative...and work your way up.

6. The Golden Rule of text battles: DONT BITE!
this doesn't help you in any way...you WILL
NOT ELEVATE IF YOU BITE!!!

In conclusion, know that this guide is the not
the beginning and ending of wordplay by any means...this is a creative endevaour, so every bar should be unique...don't try to fit your bars into any type of mold!

Above all, have fun...don't let the pressure to
elevate or stack up 110 wins get in your head...this is for fun! remember that.

May your imagery be vivid, your flow fluent
and your wordplay bannanas!
