LiteratureRe: At The Moment (ATM) by Dhortunn(op):
Marcus was having a party in the weekend to celebrate his birthday so they thought it would be a good idea to use it as an avenue to meet the south americans.

Juan agreed to come with his friends. He was not aware of what Marcus had he mind. He only accepted the invite because he knew Marcus through his elder brother.

After proper logistics and a satisfied paper plan, Marcus and Dayo were convinced that things would go smoothly with meeting the boys. They invited some blacks too, just incase something went amiss.

The party was held outside Marcus' bungalow. There was a big field opposite his house which had been turned into a recreational centre by the residents of the street in which Marcus had his house.

The field had a low fence surrounding it and a gate that was small enough to let a typical goat jump over. Swings were at a section of the field with a sandy playground to engage the hands of the young children.

They also had a place for volleyball and they somehow used free spaces for cricket. One thing was that, the field was well occupied with the necessary materials for recreational activities.

Marcus' birthday party was slated for 3pm. Due to his popularity in the neighbourhood, they received a lot of guests that consisted mainly of children and young adults. By 7pm, the crowd had returned home. After proper clean-up, Marcus persuaded his girlfriend to leave for her home but it didn't go down well with her.

She argued that she was supposed to be with him for the night. She eventually left after much pleading from Marcus but she didn't go without expressing her doubts.

Marcus felt bad but he didn't want her to meet the south americans he had invited. He had told them to come at a later hour in the night.

By 9:30pm, Dayo, Marcus and two other black guys were sitting in Marcus' big living room discussing about various topics while downing different bottles of alcoholic drinks when the intercom rang.

Marcus stood to answer the door. It was the south americans, they had come with another guy who Marcus had never seen. Marcus was glad that they had invited the two black guys so things might not backfire.

Marcus led them into the living room and when Carlos sighted Dayo, all hell was let loose. It took the intervention of Juan and the other guy that came with them before things could die down.

Juan kept on threatening Dayo as the person that was holding Naomi against him. Dayo remained mute all through the bashing. He had learnt never to exchange words with an angry fellow because they were unpredictable in their actions.

They talked for about an hour and with the way in which the matter was trashed, all things seemed to be going in the positive direction. Dayo still noticed the strong hate in Carlos' body language but he discarded it.

Dayo woke up the next morning with a sharp pain in his neck, he reached out for his phone and saw a series of missed calls and a text message. On opening the message, he got a terrible shocker. He rubbed his eyes very hard with his mouth opened wide at his phone's screen, he thought that he was still dreaming.

He looked again, this time, he saw it clearly.

'Marcus is dead'.

LiteratureRe: At The Moment (ATM) by Dhortunn(op):
After Dayo had ensured that she was calm, he encouraged her to talk.

"Carlos and Juan followed me home that night", Naomi began.

"Carlos and Juan? Who are they?", Dayo was confused.

"They are the guys who kidnapped me just be...", Naomi stammered in response.

"Go on dear, i'm listening", Dayo encouraged her to continue.

"They kidnapped me because i didn't agree to date one of them", Naomi continued.

"Please help me, those guys are evil...please", She added as she clutched tightly to Dayo's arm.

She wept bitterly.

This was a case of gender intimidation. Female insecurity was a case study everywhere in the world. Dayo knew the danger involved if he wanted to challenge the south americans.

"Did they touch you?", he asked her.

"They did not but they wanted to, so i found a way to escape", she replied amidst sobs.

"Dayo, promise me that you will help me please", she immediately sat up and said while intently looking into his eyes.

Dayo thought for a while before saying;

"I promise", he replied with a faint smile.

These two words brightened up Naomi like magic as she leaned on Dayo's shoulder as they walked out of the garden.

Dayo thought it was wise that he reported the case to the police but somehow he didn't like the idea. He decided to confide in a close friend of his.

Marcus was a black like him, from ghanaian root. He was a young child when his family had moved over to London during the period of bad leadership which resulted to a very poor economy that saw most of the citizens migrating to Nigeria.

Marcus was more like a brother to him as they shared the same passion. They had met at a pub two months into Dayo's arrival from Nigeria.

Though Marcus was older, they still got on well. He worked as a travelling agent so he had much time to relax as he could work from home by simply delivering mails and doing other stuffs online.

He ranged the doorbell and a lady figure appeared at the door. She was Marcus' girlfriend. He had seen her the last time he visited Marcus. They exchanged pleasantries as she let him in.

Her name was Trisha. She was an English young lady probably in her late twenties but she graced an elegant look. Marcus had hinted him that he planned on taking her as his wife.

Marcus was sitting on a sofa as he concentrated on a basketball game that was showing live on the large TV screen that was hooked beautifully to the wall. He noticed that the visitor was Dayo and he hailed him as he walked in.

They greeted with their trademark handshake before Marcus went to get a drink from the fridge and asked Trisha to get two cups for them from the kitchen.

Dayo knew that it would be impossible to discuss whatever he had on his mind in the presence of Trisha so he suggested that they went to the pub but not after Marcus was through with the basketball game.

At the pub, Dayo told Marcus about the kidnap. Luckily enough, Marcus knew one of the guys. He had helped Juan's brother with some travelling issues sometime ago so he had Juan's mobile number since it was the number used for the next of kin.

Marcus called Juan on phone and told him that he was having a party and he wanted him and his friends to come. Juan promised to be at Marcus' place.

Dayo was baffled and annoyed. He was coming back from a long day out and was planning on getting a well deserved night rest and right in front of him were two young men that looked like South Americans threatening him without any fear written on their faces.

He was almost tempted to challenge them but when he remembered how dangerous the south americans could be and considering the numbers of his opponent, he decided to play cool till they left him.

His planned night rest couldn't work out anymore. Some people were threatening him in a foreign land so sleep was a later option. He tried to reason if he had seen those guys from somewhere but he gave up when he couldn't come up with anything.

He didn't see Naomi throughout the following week. He feared that something might have gone wrong but he didn't want to admit such negative thoughts. He tried her mobile number severally but it was not going through.

Like magic, the loads of threat messages from an unknown number that usually graced his phone's inbox for the past few days soon stopped. It was as if the disappearance of Naomi was connected to this new development.

Nevertheless, Dayo still watched his back well enough to avoid being hit suddenly without any cover.

He was at the school's cafetaria for break on a busy practise day when a text message popped on his phone. It was from Naomi.

It read: 'Hey Dayo, i'm at Daily mall and i want to see you'

Dayo knew where Daily mall was, so he hurried with his drink before going to take an excuse from his supervisor. He wanted to know some missing things. He sure needed Naomi to open up to him. He knew that her disappearance was connected to the threats he received.

He got to the mall in less than 10 minutes. He strolled to the garden beside it. He was able to sight Naomi sitting on a concrete bench. She was so engrossed in the magazine that was in her hands that she didn't notice Dayo instantly.

Naomi hugged him so tight and for a moment, Dayo thought she was never going to let go off him. Then when she finally released her grip on Dayo, tears freely dropped down her cheeks. She immediately began to stammer as she made to talk.

Dayo confirmed his doubts. He knew something was wrong so he brought out an handkerchief as he wiped off the tears from her eyes before encouraging her to talk.

"They are after me", Naomi said as she looked into his eyes with fear.

LiteratureRe: At The Moment (ATM) by Dhortunn(op):
It was the hottest period of the year in london. It was the time of summer. This was the period when most londoners moved out of their homes in mass to pavement cafes, deck chairs in Hyde park or to the seaside.

Although long (three to four weeks or more) stretches of sunny and clear days aren't the norm, there can be days when the temperatures will rise about 25 - 28C; central london can feel very warm on days like those, sunscreen will be needed, especially for those who take river cruises on the Thames.

River Thames is the water body that flows under the famous london bridge. It has a length of 364 km, so trying to be a Michael Phelp by jumping into the river might not end up well. A view of the river at night is synonymous to beauty.

All thanks to Africa and it's weather, Dayo was already accustomed to the change from spring to summer. Spring is the period that comes after the popular Winter (cold weather). Spring predominates Febraury and March.

Dayo dressed in a light T-shirt and a pair of jean. He wore a snapback and a high top sneakers to complement his sassy look. He intended on visiting the Buckingham palace which was opened for summer.

The palace is the official residence of the Queen of England. One could see a wide array of beautiful artworks and furnishings, not forgetting the grand rooms.

He was hungry so he decided to visit the restaurant on the next street to fill himself. He ordered for some breakfast menu and while he was waiting for his request, he engaged himself with a game on his phone. Then, this young black lady walked up to his table and joined him.

He immediately recognised her to be one of his colleagues in the university. Naomi was a black american, probably in her early twenties. He got to know her name during a presentation. She was the one who represented her group and she did so well that he had a crush on her instantly.

"Hello Dayo", she said to him while extending her hand to him.

Dayo was not surprised that she knew him. His brilliant work in the school was doing the necessary advert.

He graciously accepted the handshake.

"Hi", he responded with a smile revealing his dimples.

They chatted and had laughs together. Dayo told her that he was leaving for the buckingham palace. Naomi immediately asked if she could join him. She further joked that she would make a good escort since he was not too familiar with london and he could miss his way.

Dayo agreed that they went together. It was a big ego to walk with a stunning damsel such as Naomi. That was one thing about most females that grew outside Africa. They could start a relationship on their own. They never attached a big deal to it.

Like expected, Naomi was a super companion. She was so open to him. He enjoyed every moment he spent with her. They had a lot of pictures together at the palace and when they visited the Hyde park.

Dayo returned back home after seeing Naomi off. He was weak, he had enjoyed himself so much. He was about to open the door to his flat when two white guys showed up. They threatened him to stay away from Naomi. One of them brought out a knife to indicate the level of seriousness.

LiteratureRe: At The Moment (ATM) by Dhortunn(op):
London was the destination. He was to aply for a two-years programme at a prestigious university. The tuition fees was beyond the reach of a common man but it was worth it.

The sophisticated learning facilities that were on ground were a testimony that the monies generated from the students were put into great use.

Dayo met lot of black students in the school. He wondered why the economy of most black nations were poor when their citizens enrolled in schools meant for the mighty. Though, some of the black folks that he met had never been to Africa.

Some were descendants of slaves that were transported to Europes and beyond who later established themselves as trade merchants and never looked back.

Few had homes in Africa. The people that belonged to this category were mostly the children of politicians and big businessmen. Dayo belonged to this group. They were the lucky ones who had homes in Africa and abroad.

Dayo got a flat for himself with the help of his father's robust account. Though, the Akinloye's had a private apartment in London, Dayo still preferred on renting a place. He wanted to explore this new world without having someone on his neck.

Dayo continued to keep in touch with Adeola and some of his friends despite the distance. He had proposed to her and she had said 'Yes'. He anxiously looked on to returning back to Nigeria to be with the love of his life. Love hooked him that he started sending monetary gifts to her monthly for her upkeep.

The NYSC tales made him homesick. His friends would text and call him to inform him of their escapades. Some of them had surpassed his dreams. He felt bad whenever he remembered the circumstances that surrounded his move to Europe. He was only comforted with the realisation that the NYSC year was almost over.

He was already in the seventh month since his arrival to London. He was doing great with his programme and his supervisors appreciated his efforts. Fame began to creep in as his colleaguesall wanted to be familiar with him. Then, something happened.

LiteratureRe: At The Moment (ATM) by Dhortunn(op):
It was the first day of a new year. Everyone was happy to witness a year perceived by so many people to bring good tidings. It was the normal philosophy that an average human had.

The believe that a new year would be prosperous and better than the previous had been since the time when man had started counting his fingers.

The Akinloye's were not left out as there was merriment all over the place. A good number of people had gathered to celebrate the new year with them. Most of them were relatives and family friends.

The big compound accommodated four canopy tents. They paid a popular musician and a band to entertain the guests. A buffet stand was at a open space. Guests served themselves with their preferred dishes.

Roasted goat meat (Asun), Shawarma and Barbeque were all on display. Everyone had enough to fill their mouths with. The aroma that filled the environment was a strong one that no one could resist. The live band kept on playing the type of music that the people appreciated. Without mincing words, the party was classy.

Dayo had earlier invited his friends and they all agreed to show up. He got a call from Dolapo telling him to come over to the back of a particular tent. When he got there, he could not believe his eyes. He thought they were deceiving him.

Right in front of him was Adeola, she was looking as radiant as ever. She wore a stylish buba and iro (a native yoruba woman attire) matched up with a braided hair. Her smile was ravishing.

He didn't know when he pulled her away from Dolapo to a distant place. He didn't even say an 'Hello' to Dolapo who was already about to get a seat for the girl he brought along.

Dayo begged Adeola to forgive him for the wrongdoings and the pains which he might have caused her. Adeola cut his pleas off by telling him that she had already forgiven him, if not, she would not have been at the party with Dolapo. She smiled as she talked. This made her beauty charm work more on Dayo.

He was forced to ask her about her relationship status since they didn't really talk about it but he decided to play cool. According to her, she was going back to Port Harcourt in three days time. They were together all through the party till the end.

Dayo promised to contact her before she finally returned back to PH. As he saw them off, he felt there was something that was still not right. His mind pricked him that he should have proposed to Adeola but he just waved it off. He was sure that Adeola was his.

The bombshell cracked when after two days into the new year, Chief called him and had a lengthy discussion with him. It was all about his travelling abroad.

His father had decided that he was not going to participate in the NYSC programme due to the threat on his life. Chief wanted him to go abroad and study for a masters which will help in keeping him away from troubles as the elections were near.

Chief Akinloye handed the necessary travelling documents to his son. He was able to procure everything with money, a huge sum. He was to travel the following week.

"Please fasten your seat belts as we are about to take off"

Those were the words that came out through an unknown part of the Airbus A330-300 which Dayo boarded. As the plane took to the runway before hiting into the sky, Dayo began to reminisce.

He would miss Nigeria and especially Adeola. He had informed her on the latest happenings. She had cried on the phone for long. He had promised to come back for her. He soon fell into a deep sleep.

Things were sure to change the perception that Dayo held about life.

The night didn't bring rest to Chief at all. He felt he shouldn't have attacked Dayo in that manner but he also thought that it was the right thing to do as a caring father.

The last words that came out from Dayo before he disappeared into his room continued to puzzle his father's conscience. Chief tried all he could but the broken pieces just seemed not to work with each other.

He concluded that there was something missing, he knew Dayo too well as a gentle and easy-going youth. He knew that his son hardly gets angered needless to talk of being involved in a game of death.

Dayo on his part was caught up with insomnia. He didn't believe he could mouth those words to his father. He was scared that his father could show up at his room any moment for an explanation of the drama he displayed some moments back.

He laid on his back as he plugged in his earphones that continued pouring in music to heal his hurt soul. Just at the time when insomnia was about giving up on him, his sixth sense pricked his mind that someone was knocking on his door.

He reduced the volume of the music as he listened attentively to be sure that he wasn't hallucinating. The knock came again, this time, louder than before.

"Dayo, open the door...i want to talk to you"

He could hear his father's voice saying.

He paused the song and dropped the phone on the bed before strolling across his room to open the door. He prostrated immediately on sighting his father and pleaded for the uncouth behaviour that he showed back in the living room.

"Get up my son, i know there is something really bothering you and i want you to tell me everything i need to know", Chief said as he drew out a chair.

Dayo narrated everything that happened while cleverly omitting some part. He still needed his father's trust. His father couldn't believe his ears when he heard that it was Alhaji Sulaimon that arranged for his son's death.

Alhaji was a close friend of his and a business associate that soon turned to be his sworn enemy because of a political post they were both vying for.

Chief sat speechless for a while, like he was thinking of something. Then, he stood up and advised Dayo to get a good sleep as tomorrow was going to be a long day.

As the door slammed, Dayo relaxed into his bed and said a little prayer. He wished for the safety of his father. He was a man that cared for his own. He could read it from his father's facial expression when he was narrating his ordeal. He fell into a deep sleep soon afterwards.
