It's interesting that as a UK citizen, you didn't know Tobi before now. I first heard of him sometime during the COVID-19 lockdowns when Ifedayo "Freeze" Olarinde (whose medical doctor father is from Osun State and lawyer mother is from Romania) talked about him and interviewed him from London.

I follow "Freeze," Tobi, Obi Cubana and a host of other prominent business, investment, travel and lifestyle folks of Nigerian descent (Diasporans or not) on Instagram, so, I get to regularly see their videos and posts. Just in November 2024, Freeze, Obi Cubana, Davido, etc, all posted videos and group pictures they took with Tobi in London at a celeb party on IG. NO doubt, Tobi is well connected to a lot of celebs and this is why he has been able to quickly raise £1 million to take care of his court appeal. Davido is actually his friend and a member of his Church, while Freeze and others are either his friends or acquaintances.

The obviously annoying thing about the 44-year-old Tobi is the cockiness he exhibits which meshes with the emphasis in your post about the "show-offs" and "grandiose" behavior. Davido himself smokes "Igbo" the smell of which I can't even stand as a man NOT to talk of smoking it. There's recreational marijuana which is certified and distinct for the management of the tremors in Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders, BUT smoking "Igbo" for a young singer like Davido in that Tayo Aina travel documentary is on another level entirely. Smoking weed does have long-term mental effects based off of credible medical and scientific research that are in the public domain

Living in the West is like denying oneself from the rich, human experience. Something is missing and you know it. The thing that's missing is beyond your ability to restore. You can only coexist with the lack, or log out from that system.

The coldness in the general attitude of people, lack of genuine connection, you always feel judged, or in the words of WEB DU BOIS, having "double consciousness".

Double consciousness is how for example, I know myself to be a responsible man, I won't hurt another human, I'll take care of my family, I pay my tax and employ others that pays theirs, I'll defend my family and just do right.

In Nigeria, such traits makes me a good citizen. People would want to be my friend and I'll be an ideal man for a good woman. But in the West? Those traits are not what I'll be judged with.

I'll be seen as a black, lucky immigrants that escaped from the jungle, not truly belonging here, tolerated, not worthy to develop deep friendship with because the friendship can be a burden on them.

I look around and see my kinmen doing the most dirtiest job, filling their prison per capita, and the news always broadcast restricting immigration so other Africans won't escape like me. Me being wealthy is a shock, because I'm supposed not to. I should just be okay at best.

I'll always have the fear that my job application or house search was rejected because I'm black, that the girl rejected me (even black women) because she also sees me through the lenses of white society, even though she suffers from it too. Etc etc etc.

So I get it. Being wealthy can't make you escape this as a black person. And if a black person have self respect, moving to a place he knows his dignity is preserved, he is the default, and his competence appreciated will be the ultimate goal.

In my view, the only thing the West offers is material satisfaction. You'll just be wealthy and that's just it. But the true, rich, human experience, where your dignity is preserved and you have true power, will be missing.

So living with this burden of double consciousness, where I am first conscious of my worth as a person, but still conscious of how my society view me, is sickness of the mind. That's not good life. If one choose to live in the West permanently, then he/she have accepted to bear this burden.
