October 27, 2017 Anger in Yenagoa as Policeman kills SS 3 student The-victimTombozie-Johnson There was tension in Kpansia community, Yenagoa Local Government area of Bayelsa State on Friday as a Police Corporal shot dead a Senior Secondary School (SSS) student, Tomizibe Johnson. The Policeman, identified as Corporal David Napoleon, is attached to the Department of Operations at the State Police Command. He has been disarmed and is being detained pending further investigation and trial. While the bereaved family put the late Johnson’s age at 13, the state Police command said that he was 18. There was also controversy over the killing which the residents claimed was by the hands of a trigger-happy Corporal, but the Police authorities claimed that the deceased was a member of a cult group on a mission to attack the officer. The killing sparked anger in the community. Hundreds of the residents trooped to the streets in protest over rising cases of illegal arrest and killing of youths by security operatives in the state. But for quick intervention by the chairman of the Yenagoa caretaker committee, Oforji Oboku the angry indigenes could have abducted a traffic warden. The state Police spokesperson, Asimin Butswat, claimed that Johnson was fired at by the Corporal who was alegedly being chased by suspected cult members in the community. But the chairman of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Central Zone, Comrade Tare Porri, faulted the claim by the Police spokesperson. He said: “After consulting with the Police and the bereaved family, it is clear that the deceased was 13 years old. He and the killer policeman were neighbours. Eyewitnesses said the policeman shot twice from the kitchen.” Porri added: “Eyewitnesses and the Investigating officer confirmed to us that the boy was not a cultist. He was just witnessing an argument.” The IYC leader called on the State Commissioner of Police to investigate the incident and come out with a clear report to avoid a reprisal attack against security agents. “Reprisal can happen when such cases are not properly investigated. Kpansia is a safe community and must be made to remain so,” he said. Butswat, however, insisted that the Corporal shot in self-defence/ He said: “It occurred at about 10pm on Thursday after six armed cultists invaded the home of Corporal David Napoleaon at the Kpansia area of the State capital. “The suspected armed cultists tore the window net and gained entrance into the house. The officer, who was home with his family, ran after the hoodlums and arrested one Stephen Ayama, male, 16 years and a member of the Green Lander cult group .He was handed to the State Security outfit known as Door Akpo. “When he was coming back to his house with a plan to move his family out to a safer place, some suspected cultists and indigenes of the community went after him to attack him .He ran but was chased by the irate youths. He turned and shot at them below the knee level. The bullet hit one Tombozide Joseph, 18 years, on the thigh. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre.” https://yenloaded..com.ng/2017/10/anger-in-yenagoa-as-policeman-kills-ss.html |
