BusinessTobi Sax Proves To The World That Children Living With Autism Are Special by DigitalAgency(op): 2:47pm On Jul 15, 2016
Tobi Sax may not be known by many Nigerians but on June 22, 2016, Tobi proved to the world that Autism is not a disease or limitation as she thrilled fans with her ability to play the piano in a very uncanny manner. More than 500 children in Lagos and Ogun States were attended to by healthcare specialists in one-on-one consultations for children with autism and other developmental difficulties organized by Guaranty Trust Bank plc. The consultations, held from April 25-29 in Ogun State, and June 22-29 in Lagos are part of the GTBank Orange Ribbon Initiative, an advocacy programme designed to support children with developmental disabilities in Nigeria especially Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
At the one-on-one consultation, healthcare specialists drawn from Nigeria and the United States, offered for free, specialized services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, behavioral analysis, audiology, clinical psychology, developmental psychiatry, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy. Amongst the partners in the programme were the First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs Olufunso Amosun through the Uplift Foundation, the State Ministries of Health and Education, Science and Technology, Blazing Trails International, Texas, USA, College of Medicine, Idi-Araba, Lagos, Patrick Speech and Language Centre, and the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Ogun State.

Science/Technology4 Social Networks You’re Probably Not Using (and Why You Should) by DigitalAgency(op): 5:57pm On May 27, 2016
You would have started with Facebook, progressed quickly to Twitter, reluctantly found your way around Google+ (sorry, Google), suddenly realized that you need to have a LinkedIn presence, and then jumped aboard the Pinterest bandwagon as it started speeding away. You may well have even graduated to the various video-sharing social platforms – YouTube, Vimeo, and Vine – shortly after you learned that social media marketing was quickly becoming ever-more visual after the rise of Instagram. You might have even decided to cut your own blogging work out for yourself and started a Tumblr. to bolster your daily written output.

Phew. It’s a hard day’s work at your office, that’s for sure. But you’re coping. The only thing that could come along now and ruin your routine is yet another social network to keep on top of. Well, guess what – I’m here to tell you that, aside from the big 9 that I have already listed so far, there are 4 more rising stars out there that you will do well to find your way around if you are to really stamp your brand’s presence on social media.

1. Periscope

Fresh out of the app store comes Periscope, the new Twitter-owned video sharing network. However, this one moves away from what we’ve seen before in the fact that with Periscope you record your videos and broadcast them live to your followers.

2. Snapchat

This is not a particularly new platform, of course, but nonetheless Snapchat has yet to be integrated into the marketing routines in any mainstream way amongst SMEs (for plenty of large corporations have certainly started to take advantage of it). It’s a popular photo and video messaging service with over 100 million active monthly users, though has seemed to have found its calling amongst the younger generation.

3. DeviantArt

You don’t have to be Picasso to start posting on DeviantArt, though this is certainly an original image oriented social network. Indeed, this is supposed to be a platform solely dedicated to the sharing of original artworks by amateurs.

4. NextDoor

This is a great network for trying to improve your local SEO. Whilst the world seems to have shrunk since the advent of social media, a lot of the time we seem to forget that although we can now connect instantly with people half way around the world, rarely do we get to know our own next door neighbours. But NextDoor is the social network that aims to solve that problem.

Number Five?

And number 5, Ello… Only joking, I might eat my words but I really don’t see that network ever getting off the ground, so you have my permission to leave that one off your ‘to do list’ for the time being.
Technology MarketThe Future Of The Mobile App Market by DigitalAgency(op): 12:53pm On May 25, 2016
Smartphones and tablets. They’re everywhere. And for good reason. They’re brilliant creations. And one of the main things that makes them so brilliantly useful, entertaining and versatile is the app store. There are literally millions of mobile apps out there on the market, which can do anything from monitoring your health to mapping the stars in the night sky.

What a great age that we live in to be able to carry around in our pockets incredible devices with such power and such liberating usefulness. We are, as a generation, all the better for what dedicated app developers have produced and provided for us. Indeed, it seems like the future is already upon us – what more can possibly be achieved with smartphones and apps?

Well, I’d like to think that we haven’t even scratched the surface of mobile smart technology’s capabilities, and there are plenty of marketers out there who’d certainly like to think the same – especially when it comes to revenue and sales figures.

Gartner have recently published some new data that predicts that by 2017 mobile apps will be downloaded in excess of 268 billion times, which will generate a revenue of more than $77 billion, making mobile apps one of the most popular computing tools in the world.

Synecoretech.com have handily put those figures into context for us. If we compare these figures with the approximate world population of 7.1 billion, it means that by 2017 every single person on the planet will have downloaded 37 mobile apps.

An Appy Future
This is great stuff. The mobile app market clearly isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and that means that we have an indefinite wealth of new and innovative apps to look forward to playing with in the future (as well as some decidedly dodgy ones of course, but hey, you can’t win ‘em all).

So – what are the trends of the app market? What categories have dominated the past, and which ones look like they are going to pave the way in the future? These are interesting questions, because already we have seen quite a seismic shift in what has proven popular in the relatively few years that the mobile app market has become a mainstream consideration for consumers and investors alike.

At first it was games that dominated, then it turned to social network apps (a market which is now indeed beginning to fragment), and now it’s utility apps, according to the cofounder and Managing Partner of Nodes when interviewed for the site’s blog.

Why We Like Apps
Apps are of course not the only way that we can access the internet via our smart devices. Some of us like to turn to the good old mobile web browser to retrieve the information that we want. But, it has to be said, that the vast majority of us much prefer the mobile app to the mobile website.

Flurry last year published statistics that indicate how we use our mobile devices, and mobile apps clearly dominate the mobile web in terms of usage.

Why is this? Well, Daniel from Nodes says it’s all to do with the complexity of building responsive websites, and “speed and single purpose”.

“Everything is more complex on a smaller screen and a dedicated app that is tailored for a single purpose will always be able to create a better user experience. And html5 does still not work as smoothly on mobile devices. I think Facebook’s move from html5 based apps to native apps is the best indicator of this.”

With this in mind, it seems that businesses will best utilize their web-based content if they consider shifting some of their resources into building specific-use mobile apps.

The single-purpose app means that consumers will have a better user experience with a brand. When visiting a website that a digital marketer is investing huge amounts of time and effort into producing large amounts of web-based content, mobile browsers can tend to perform a little slowly – not to mention the problems that come with the smaller screen size.

As such, it is safe to say that users are becoming more reliant on mobile apps for their engagement with a brand. Indeed, they are becoming expectant of it, and businesses will do well not to be threatened by this change, but to instead embrace it and adapt to gain competitive advantage.

Evolution
Smartphone use will no doubt continue to evolve, and app developers like Nodes will pave the way for future revolutions. The impact of things like iBeacon will have a huge effect on location experience for smartphone carriers. So long as we have smartphones, we will have apps that make the most of their capabilities, and I for one am extremely excited about what the future app market holds for us.
Nairaland GeneralSiemens Refutes The Sack Of Nigerian Staff In Subsidiary, Dresser-rand by DigitalAgency(op): 9:46am On Apr 25, 2016
If you recall on Wednesday 20th April 2016 in Port-Harcourt, Nigeria, employees of Dresser-Rand, a subsidiary Telecom giants, Siemens, took to the streets to protest the alleged move by the company's management to sack a massive 70% of its Nigerian workers.

The company, however, has refuted the claim in a press releases that Siemens and Dresser-Rand would continue to work to ensure a secure and efficient integration process for all employees.

Science/TechnologyUsing Video To Improve Brand Awareness by DigitalAgency(op): 1:00pm On Apr 22, 2016
Ok, so I might have had an ulterior motive for choosing this title for today’s blog post. You see, I’m very, very keen for us here to make our own promotional video, showcasing beautifully and visually all the amazing work that we do here, and what we could be doing for your business too.

Now, I don’t actually have to convince you that making a promotional video to improve brand awareness is a good idea, but we are indeed so incredibly busy with old clients, new clients and enquiries that it’s simply having to take a back seat for a moment or two (after all, we are writers first and foremost).

So, in the meantime – and mostly for the sake of keeping me quiet about it for an hour – the ETO has approved that I use today’s blog to write about videos, and why companies (like ours!!) should be using them to raise awareness of their brands on the internet.

Presence
Social media marketing has great reach and great power. Ask any marketer and they’ll most certainly agree that in today’s connected world, it is the internet that companies should turn to try and increase their brand awareness. This is simply down to the numbers. With over 1.25 billion users on Facebook, 284 million active Tweeters, another 300 million on Google+, 332 million on LinkedIn, and 70 million on Pinterest, there is a captive market out there ready to do business with.

In order to reach a significant proportion of all of these users, then your brand needs to be present on all social platforms, and indeed do everything you can to get noticed by as many people as possible.

Essential
Video has undoubtedly become an essential part of any business’s content marketing strategy. There was once a time when producing a video that would be of high enough quality to warrant being used would have priced a lot of SMEs out of the game.

But not any more.

If you’ve got a smartphone with a camera, then, by simply downloading a video editing app, such as Splice for instance, then you have all the equipment that you could possibly need to create a perfectly acceptable promotional video for your company, which you will then be able to share far and wide around your social networks.

Alternatively, if (like me) you think that the video would work a lot better utilising animation, then, as mentioned above, you can turn to the truly democratising creation that is Moovly and create animated videos like a pro for free.

Only Limited By Your Creativity
Just doing a one off video and sharing once a week for the next couple of months, however, will not be enough. To really try and raise the awareness of your brand, then you need to start thinking in terms of a viral video series.

These are the sorts of videos that get shared forever more, on platforms like Facebook, and become in themselves something of a cult. The ‘Will It Blend?’ video series is a good case in point here. The marketing team at Blendtec, a company that producers kitchen blenders, came up with the idea of sacrificing a few of their stock in order to illustrate the sheer motor power of their creations. One video at a time, they filmed and then shared the blenders making mincemeat of various solid objects – everything from Frozen figures to pool cues.

True, the videos don’t actually illustrate all that well just how you might use them in a normal kitchen scenario, but they were just silly and fun enough to grab a lot of attention. And so they went viral, and now everyone’s heard of the amazing power of Blendtec blenders (you see, no one seems to really care that blenders only have to be powerful enough to whizz up some garlic, a few herbs and maybe an onion every once in a while – if they can destroy a tape measure then they must be the best!).

What’s Your Idea?
So, apart from the Moovly animated video that I am using this blog to try and help along a bit, I suppose the next thing for us – and for your business – to do is try and think of a series of relevant videos that have the potential to go viral, but of course promote your brand at the same time. Hmm – how about typing using different vegetables? Tomorrow I will only use two carrots to write everything on my schedule. Then look out for potato Friday and marrow Monday. Success is guaranteed, right? Right?
