This is different. Those people arrested in N.Korea and Russia most often were arrested to get leverage on America. In the case of these guys, they went to overthrow government in their home country and got caught. America public is not going to be bother about them. Government is not going to show any concern especially since they are adult. America can not seek commutation since America law allows for death penalty.

Education / Re: Lagos State To Convert LASUCOM To Medical University by Dijita: 4:07pm On Aug 27
Nauttyprof:

This has no tribalism or bigotry in it. There is no sense in making the college of medicine a stand alone university. The objectives you mentioned can be achieved also within the normal university system. All that is needed is to upgrade the existing facilities and introduce other health care areas not considered in the previous or existing arrangement.

We just love doing things for name and not really making the needed impact. Some states have it, why can't Lagos have it?

Before you come for me, I am a Yoruba and a proper one (if you know what I mean). We just need to be objective on this.

I disagree with you. I am of the perspective that Lagos state should have a medical university to train more students that they are currently doing at the moment. Given the demand for Nigeria medical personnel overseas the state should put resources into graduating upward of 5000 medical personnel per year. Many will Japa but a lot will still be in Nigeria to care of Lagosians.

Good step in right direction. Lagos is working.
But is there still space to build structure in that LASUTH, the place looks "all occupied " cool

That is why it is going to be multi campus. They will build in the outskirt of Lagos - Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry etc

Education / Re: MFM Has Highest Number Of First-Class Graduates In Nigeria - Olukoya by Dijita: 1:17pm On Aug 19
thesicilian:
I highly doubt this is even true.

In order to arrive at this conclusion, he would have to take census of the total number of first class graduates in every branch of every denomination, including Deeper Life, Christ Embassy, RCCG, Winners etc. Not just in Lagos alone but in all the 36 states and FCT. Not just the pentecostals alone but also Catholics, Baptists, Anglicans, Lutherans etc.

I don't think someone who's supposedly that educated should be making such broad statements without facts to back them up.

He did not claim it to be a fact. He said "I believe". It is an opinion. If any other religion leaders dispute his claim let them say so and let there be a contest of pushing Nigeria to be the best they could be instead of selling them miracle water. FYI, I am not a member of his denomination

In the case of this local government, it is not clear if this is build and owned by the government or hey are just using government to acquire land and build it with loan on the government name and then concession to their pals in private business.

Wisdom, intelligence and knowledge are not strangers, they are all part of the same deal. It is impossible for an intelligent man to lack wisdom and knowledge. Indeed intelligence is the physical manifestation of both those qualities (wisdom and knowledge) and the more intelligent a man is, the better he is at applying wisdom and knowledge to the difficult task of navigating his way through life.

You may wallow in self pity for as much as you want, but no honest person will ever accept plagiarism and reinvention as signs of true intelligence in much the same way as a clever conman will never be regarded as a genius.

As much I don't disagree with you 100%. I think it is wrong to say that it is impossible for an intelligent person to lack wisdom. You can be intelligent through the acquisition of knowledge. If your parent have the resources to send you to a very good school and you are dedicated to your studies you will acquire knowledge. The understanding of the knowledge you acquire makes you to be intelligent. However, if you lack wisdom you may just be an intelligent fool. The proper application of knowledge and understanding is what is call wisdom.
In our country we have many professors, scientist and religious leaders that are considered to be intelligent but lack the wisdom to convert their knowledge and understanding to alleviate our societal problem.
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding" Proverb 4: 7.

Foshe16:
You guys are quick to paint a business black for errors that are mostly caused by you. I see people on this thread calling the company a fraud because they couldn't get a refund on their ticket. The first question is when you were paying for the ticket, didn't you see that the non-refundable ticket is different from the refundable ticket? You went ahead and bought the non-refundable ticket because you saw it was cheap and you are now requesting that they refund you. Y'all are pathetic. Wakanow is not a fraud, people don't just read before making purchases. if you have a problem with them I think this article can help you - https://blog.wakanow.com/is-wakanow-travel-agency-legit/

I have never used them and I don't have any opinion about them. However, based on this thread the blame goes both ways. In business it is important to communicate. In Nigeria, most businesses big and small are in the habit of ghosting customers that include big banks. You will call; them on phone the phone will ring forever without anyone answering it. Sometimes the line would be engaged. How can a business line be engaged in 2024. In some instances the line you called them on in 2023 is no longer working in 2024. When you speak to someone they will promise to call you back, email you or whatever and you will not hear from them. These are my experiences with UBA, Access bank, Zenith bank, DSTV among others.

In the case of the company under discussion, if people purchase non refundable tickets let them responded and tell us that the ticket was non refundable ticket. I know they are active on Nairaland because I have seen they positings on several occasions. They never disputed people complaining here that the specific issue is non refundable ticket.

It's a bad precedent to export primitive tribal sentiment from Africa to the UK. What could have been the possible reason naming a party after a particular tribe if it isn't to get sentiment votes based on tribe.

Even if it's Indian party or Calabar party, it will still be a thousand times very wrong.
I am surprise that UK allows them to register the party. It is divisive from my perspective

How can Nigeria under Tinubu have a higher tax rate than the USA??

I don't understand?
US is competing with other countries to attract companies. When US tax rate was high companies were relocating their head offices to low tax places. Do you think if Nigeria corporate tax is 0% MacDonald or Microsoft will relocate it's head office to Nigeria? At the level under discussion Nigeria problem is not its tax rate but its level of corruption and lack of business infrastructure.

You're assuming that work is always there for those who want it, and that those who are able to get it will always have it.

If there is anything I admired most in America is the availability of Jobs. The fact that if you lose one job there is always another job for you to do.You don't have to beg anyone for money. You may be a CEO and lose your job. if you are willing to be a security officer after your unemployment ran out, you will get one. If you lost your CFO position and ready to work in the restaurant or a truck driver you will get something doing until the right opportunity come along. You as a Nigerian that can speak and read English are in a better position that many other immigrants lacking such important communication skill.

Again, you're assuming an always accessible, reliable supply.
You are talking of housing. Yes. when you compare to where we are coming from. I am not saying this is a walk in the park. I am saying if you put effort and energy you will get result unlike back home.

My friend, you have a lot to learn about America.
We continue to learn. However, I have been in America since 1998. Got an undergraduate and two master degrees. Trained children that are engineer, nurse and Ivy league undergraduate. I probably understand the country better than Nigeria

Yes, there are homeless people in America. no one that is hard working and ready to work is going to be homeless whether you have paper or not. There is always work for you to do as long as you are not choosy

Cousin9999:

From the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness:
While employment helps people stay housed, it does not guarantee housing. As many as 40%-60% of people experiencing homelessness have a job, but housing is unaffordable because wages have not kept up with rising rents. There is no county or state where a full-time minimum-wage worker can afford a modest apartment. At minimum wage, people have to work 86 hours a week to afford a one-bedroom. Even when people can afford a home, one is not always available. In 1970, the United States had a surplus of 300,000 affordable homes. Today, only 37 affordable homes are available for every 100 extremely low-income renters. As a result, 70% of the lowest-wage households spend more than half their income on rent, placing them at high risk of homelessness when unexpected expenses (such as car repairs and medical bills) arise

https://www.usich.gov/guidance-reports-data/data-trends

There is a lot of complexity in that statistics that is important and useful for policy makers that is not applicable in the context of our discussion here.
My comment you quoted states that if you are hard working and willing to work.

You referenced the document that says 86 hrs of work at minimum wage is required to afford one bedroom. This means if you and your spouse is working regular 80 hours per week and extra 6 hrs( less than the number of hours you will waste in traffic every week in Lagos smiley), you will be able to afford one bedroom. if you and your spouse don't have children, you can get roommate, If you don't have spouse you can get two roommates. You can then work yourself up to the point you can be able to buy your own house. That is how a lot of people do it here? You are not coming to be stuck on minimum wage.

The discussion here is regarding Nigerian coming to US. In Nigeria if you are earning triple the minimum wage, can you afford one bedroom, pay other expenses and still be able to feed yourself?

Please don't misunderstand me. I am not saying America is a paradise. It is not. However, it is a land of opportunity for those willing to work hard and face the challenges it poses.

They are some wisdom in you posting. However, you made the who thing scary than it is. I agree with you we all need to plan and be diligent in our relocation plans.
Your major point is that things are very expensive here in the US. That is the truth. However, if you are in Nigeria and you don't have a job, how can you afford what is cheap? Majority of the people that comes to this country and regret are those that thinks they will be earning America dollar and their cost of living will be as cheap as they are in Nigeria and those that want to blow before they leave the airport.

Yes, there are homeless people in America. no one that is hard working and ready to work is going to be homeless whether you have paper or not. There is always work for you to do as long as you are not choosy.

Americans complain about taxes but they can see what their taxes is been used for. You drive on good road, send your children to free school. Get treated at the hospital for free if you don't have money to pay. Yes, I repeat you get treated in the hospital free if you don't have money to pay. You must pay if you have the money after you have been treated. it is not Naija where you can lied and hide your money.

It is not true that only children of the rich that goes to university in America. If you are poor, you will get financial Aid and yes education is very expensive. Even in Nigeria quality education is very expensive. American do go to school. If you go to any university classroom, no matter the number of immigrants in the class, more than 50% will still be Americans in majority of cases. Of course there are significant number of the population that did not have university education just like any other countries in the world.

As for prison, America is not Nigeria, they don't settle case at the police stations. If you commit crime, you will go to jail. No excuses.

is the road intended to connect humans, or connect swamps with ocean? Are these the humans that will be driving on the road?
Don't roads lead to places where commercial activities are happening.

The map I'm even showing you makes it look as if some of the places this road crosses has solid land. It is a road across floodplains and mud.

After all, why aren't those cities themselves closer to the atlantic other than knowing their environment.?

But that coastal Niger delta is porous (hence this road will need hundreds of bridges). Believe it or not, those communities access or are reasonable close to the atlantic. because that region is a grouping of muddy uninhabited islands and flood plains

What this road MIGHT do is block those place's access to the atlantic. Because Nigeria builds lowe idiotic bridges that ships cannot traverse, so it will effectively make Lagos the only coastal city in Nigeria

I am not familiar to the Delta and beyond side but I very familiar with Ogun and some part of Ondo. Your assertion is false that Lagos will only be the coastal road.

toyosiolamide:

Politics is a game of numbers. If he has a chance to win, his supporters must desist from holding those who oppose him by the jugular and behave in ways that demand everyone’s sole support for him. In essence, they must refrain from insulting certain tribes and instead present him as a Nigerian, campaigning with love, humility, and respect. From the way his supporters present him right now, the same mistakes they made in 2023 may repeat themselves. Respect other tribes, reach out, and show respect. If you insult me, then maybe my message has still not been conveyed. Some of us who supported him and even encouraged others to support him saw our efforts turned into futility by the way we were later insulted and made to feel.

Obi needs an election PR strategist to help control his online warriors for him to stand a chance. My humble opinion

He also need smart person around him. I read the article. The writer may have put Opeoluwa in trouble at work. US is not Nigeria, mentioning his/her place of work especially government employee is highly frown upon in America. He/she is a DHS employee probably on duty at the airport, approaching a celebrity to attend your wedding is consider solicitation for benefit in kind. The writer could have written the article without mentioning the person's place of work. If the management got wind of this, he/she will be question and possibly discipline. The employer will probably asked her to return what Peter Obi gave her if it is more than equivalent of say $10 or there about.
