Four of the 24 Chibok girls reportedly escaped from Boko Haram insurgents in 2014 and came to the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola for their education were among the new students formally accepted into the university during the matriculation and pledge ceremony held last week.

The matriculation ceremony, according to the Executive Director of Communication and Public Relations unit of the university, Mr. Daniel Okereke, witnessed a large turnout of parents and students.

He said since their escape, all the 24 young girls had been on the university’s scholarship studying under a special preparatory programme.

Okereke also noted that students admitted into the newly established School of Law to study courses in Humanitarian, Gender and Environmental Laws, some postgraduate students including 18 of the 67 winners of scholarship offers as well as those on transfer from other universities in Ghana, Lebanon, Egypt, the United States and some European countries were part of the ceremony.

He pointed out that apart from the new law students, the university witnessed for the first time in three years the largest number of newly admitted undergraduates, the development he said signalled a return to pre-insurgency admission figures by the university.

Addressing the audience inside the Commencement Hall, the President and Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr. Margee Ensign told the new intakes that the type of education they would receive in the university would make them leaders in their chosen fields upon graduation.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Dave Nweze Umahi, has ordered the immediate sack of some non-academic staff of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki and the College of Education, Ikwo.

Umahi, who gave the order on Saturday while receiving the report of a committee to review the activities in the institutions, said that it is not economically viable for the institutions to recruit adjunct staff in the non-academic cadre, as the employees will be redundant in their duties.

“It does not make ‘economic sense’ for the institutions to employ 400 cleaners as one wonders the scope and nature of work they will be doing.

“We know that the managements postulated ‘professional sense’ in employing such workers but with the prevailing economic situation in the country, we should effectively merge it with ‘economic sense,” he said.

The governor also ordered that promotion of staff in both institutions be suspended until the visitation panel concluded its duties.

He also directed the state’s fiscal responsibility commission to investigate activities in both institutions.

“When we conclude all reviews and investigations, I am optimistic that we can reduce their tuition fees as obtained in other states of the South East geo political zone.

“We are unhappy that our students seek academic pursuits in other states due to high tuition fees, and we are committed to solving all the problems confronting these institutions,” he added. (NAN)

EducationHttp://myschoollatest.net/index.php/2016/08/26/china-awards-scholarship-unizik-s by Dikachisco(op): 8:28pm On Aug 26, 2016
China awards scholarship to Fifty-four (54) Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, UNIZIK students to study in China.

Fifty-four UNIZIK students have been awarded Chinese Government scholarship for further studies in China. This was made known at the Confucius Institute graduation ceremony which was held recently at the Institute Center, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The scholarship award gives some of the beneficiaries opportunity to complete any degree programme of their choice in leading universities in China while for some they will just spend one year for chinese language proficiency.

In his opening speech, Teacher Wu Qunbin recognized and appreciated the support of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS and the entire Governing Council of the University. He also congratulated the graduating students for the achievement while promising that the Institute will continue to do all in its power to ensure that students come out successful in the programme. According to him, the platform has helped create good relations between the Chinese and Nigerian government.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government for the scholarship award which, according to him, is not a new development, as some of the University’s students are already in China and he had travelled several times to monitor them.

Prof. Ahaneku also congratulated the graduating students for successfully completing the Chinese Proficiency Programme while advising the scholarship beneficiaries to promote the good image of the University and Nigeria in China, to distinguish themselves and shun all vices that can mar the image of the University and Nigeria. He added that they should always uphold the University’s motto: Discipline, Self Reliance and Excellence.

According to him, the milestone that has been achieved through the Institute has helped elevate the image and reputation of the University and the country as a whole, and has encouraged the advancement of humanity.

Prof. Ahaneku also wished the other non-benefitting undergraduate students of the Institute success and also advised them to put in more effort in their studies so that they can also benefit from the Institute Scholarship Scheme.
EducationHttp://myschoollatest.net/index.php/2016/08/26/imo-state-poly-attacked-gun-men-b by Dikachisco(op): 8:08pm On Aug 26, 2016
Great Shock has gripped Imo state following an attack on Imo Polytechnic by some unknown gunmen.
The yet to be identified gunmen reportedly killed and set ablaze two persons in Imo state polytechnic which is at Uwuagwo, in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state (formerly, Michael Okpara College of Agriculture). Punch reports that the incident reportedly happened in the early hours of Wednesday at a students’ hostel in Mgbirichi, an adjoining town to the campus. Correspondent gathered that some hoodlums were said to have attacked and killed Onumajuru Chibueze and his visiting friend, Chris Ukpabi, at the Infinity Hostel.

Onumajuru reportedly worked at the institution’s School of Environmental Sciences as a typist, while Ukpabi has recently graduated from the Department of Office, Technology and Management. Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Polytechnic, Mr Darlington Oparaocha, said the double murder happened outside the campus. He confirmed that one of the victims had finished his final exams since 2014, but he had not finished with his clearance exercise. Oparaocha said: “Whether they (victims) can be called graduates of the Polytechnic, I cannot tell; and whether they were killed by either armed robbers or cultists, I cannot also tell. “This is because the ugly incident happened in the wee hours of the fateful day.” He said he was aware of a robbery incident in one of the hostels adjacent to the Infinity Lodge.

Efforts by our correspondent to get more information about Onumajuru from the School of Environmental Sciences proved abortive, as no staff volunteered to talk. When contacted, the state police public relations officer, Mr Andrew, confirmed the incident. He said: “We have the report of the inhuman act. Presently, we are investigating the matter, with a view to ascertaining the circumstances that led to the deaths and the subsequent inferno that engulfed the two victims.”
