Politics / How Nigeria's Corruption Became Fantasticby ONWUASOANYA Jones by Dikatop(m): 5:08am On May 16, 2016
In case you do not understand what the British Prime Minister, David Cameron was saying or why he chose to qualify the rate of Nigeria's corruption as 'fantastic', I will give you an illustration that may help you to better understand the youthful Prime Minister's irrefutable position on the level of corruption in Black Africa's largest country.
A certain family has made a name for itself in craftsmanship. So good is this family in the art that people come from far and wide to patronize their art and to also learn from them, the art of turning shapeless materials into beautiful objects. However, after so many years of the reign of the Garinga family as one of the best talented in that art, a big tsunami happened, wiping off the entire family. As most members of the community mourned over this grievous loss, some other people whose crafting businesses had failed to thrive as a result of this family's ingenuity, became anxious, hopeful that they will begin to enjoy a new lease of life in their business.
Just as the community and their neighbors were getting over the loss of this specially gifted family and trying to get to terms with the reality that they will now have to make do with average craftsmen who litter the town and the less talented craftsmen were readying their tools for a kind of windfall, a new craftsman emerged. Tanama's ancestry is traced to the old family who were wiped off in the Tsunami, but he had long dissociated himself from them, because he felt they had not treated his mother well.
Tanama became the newest song in the community and beyond, as he did not make beautiful crafts like his dead kith and kin, but also devised new ways of making his more beautiful and even more affordable. Before long, the community and their neighbours forgot about the original craftsmen. Whenever they remember them, it is not really because they miss their craftsmanship, but because of the Tsunami. For most members of the community and their neighbours, the Garinga family was good, but Tanama is fantastic.
Britain, the United States of America and other countries of the world; Western and the Third world, Nigeria has remained an important reference point in international politics and economy, not just because of our oil nor because of our size, but because of the huge potentials we hold which are suffocated by successive corrupt governments and their officials who have held the country down. These countries of the world do not pay attention to us, because they love us, neither is it because want the best for us. Rather, they keep regular tab on us, to ensure that we do not make any reasonable headway that may guarantee our ascension to being a world power.
David Cameron's comment in which he referred to Nigeria as one of the two countries that are fantastically corrupt is neither scorning us nor pitying the ordinary people of Nigeria, rather, it is rather a celebration of what is presently happening in Nigeria under President Buhari.
In place of saying that the country is 'fantastically' corrupt, the British Prime Minister could have as well chosen to say that Nigeria and Afghanistan are as corrupt as they (the Western powers) would want them to be. If the Prime Minister had any pity for our condition or was disapproving of the endemic corruption that has eaten off the entire fabric of our nation, he would have chosen more appropriate adjectives to pass his message. It couldn't have been for a lack of proper understanding of the English language that he said what he said. Remember, he is English and understands English better than any of Buhari's media aides who may be trying to teach him the Use of English.
Instead of trying to insult Nigerians by explaining away David Cameron's unambiguous indictment of President Buhari's administration as fantastically corrupt, the duo of Garba Shehu and Femi Adeshina should have invested their time and efforts towards explaining to Nigerians how we graduated from being one of those corrupt countries to the two most fantastically corrupt countries, in less than one year of the Change regime.
British leaders, like their counterparts in the top ranch of world, best referred to as Western powers do not speak impulsively. They say things they are very sure of, having got the necessary briefings from the relevant agencies of government. The President's image makers should have known that the world watches what happens in our country, and what David Cameron was caught on camera saying is a reflection of what the world thinks about the presidency of Muhamadu Buhari.
The world has seen our President as one who lied himself into power and expresses no regrets about not being able to keep to even the simplest of his campaign promises. I did write sometime that there is no worst form of corruption than lying. One who lies cannot be trusted, and anyone who cannot be trusted is corrupt. The world joined Nigeria in waiting for our President to keep to one of his major campaign promises of publicly declaring his assets before taking over as President and compelling all his appointees to do the same as he promised before and even after his election as President. For the same President who made this promise under no duress to turn around to tell a bewildered world that he will no longer declare his assets publicly is a most disheartening level of corruption. Prime Minister David Cameron is aware of this.
Corruption is not fought by marking out outspoken political opponents for persecution in the name of prosecution. It is the worst form of corruption to give someone who has stolen bigger money from State coffers a pat on the back and pick out some of his messengers who allegedly stole pittance, when compared with what your Party members stole and throw them into detention camps without as much as following due judicial processes. For those who will want the young British Prime Minister to agree with them that Buhari is fighting corruption, they should understand that David Cameron is a beneficiary of one of the world's best educational system, he is not like the millions of certificate carrying dullards who will believe any lie, without carrying out the simplest of analyses.
Prime Minister David Cameron's choice of word indicates that the Western world appreciates that the rate of corruption in the country at present is far worse than what it used to be in the past. This is understandable, because the country has only continued to pick out few rats among the viruses that have eaten up our national heritage, while leaving all the perks that attract and encourage corruption. The best way to fight corruption is by setting out the necessary policies in place to discourage people from corruptly enriching themselves. While punishing people for their acts of corruption may serve as deterrent to others from engaging in corrupt practices, it does little to really fight the cankerworm, especially as it is assumed by some people that belonging to the same political Party with the President may serve as immunity to them against prosecution for any act of corruption.
The most effective way of fighting corruption is by taking steps to discourage people from being corrupt. It can be illustrated with a situation where rats continuously destroy your documents or any valuable of yours, if you keep killing these rats, they will keep coming, as long as that which attracts them is still there. To stop the rats from tampering with those documents, what you need to do is to find out what attracts those rats, if it there is fish or a smell of it close to where you kept those documents, you remove them and if there is a hole through which the rats find their way to where you kept these documents, you close up the hole and these rats will stop coming. President Buhari's idea of fighting corruption through clamping people into detention camps, without removing those things that would attract some other people to steal our commonwealth is an indirect way of encouraging corruption.
The whistle has been blown so many times on some corrupt acts going on within President Buhari's government, yet, no one has been called to question on any of those issues. Recently, a memo from the Ministry of Information and Culture demanding loan to the tune of millions of Naira for transportation is still trending in the social media, and no one has been called in for questioning. When the lid was blown on massive corruption that trailed the preparation of the 2016 fiscal budget, the President kept mute on it, he did not as much raise a pen on the matter. Today, a budget of over 6.6 Trillion Naira, being the highest figure to be passed in a single years since the nation's independence has become a legal document. How these funds will be disbursed will go a long way in proving to the world, if the British Prime Minister was right or wrong.

Politics / Why Buhari Must Be Supported By JOHN Mgbe by Dikatop(m): 3:56am On May 16, 2016
In his book entitled”Nigeria/Biafra Civil war: My Experiences”, the then Imo State Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, wrote thus:”There is this story of a Nigerian minister who went to a conference in another country. His counterpart in that country took him to his country home. It was such a beautiful building. The Nigerian Minister asked his counterpart how he managed to build such a a house. The counterpart replied:”You see that bridge there (pointing at the nearby bridge), 10% of it is this house.” When next the same conference was being held in Nigeria, the Minister invited that his counterpart to his own country home(i.e. in Nigeria). The visitor was startled at the state-of –the-art mansion. He quickly asked:”How did you manage? The Nigerian Minister replied:”You see that valley there(pointing at a nearby valley), there is supposed to be a bridge there; that bridge is this house.”
The above statement by Udenwa clearly defines the level of corruption in Nigeria. It is a hydra-headed monster that has eaten deep into the fabric of our society. Please read White Paper Newspaper of 7th-8th November, 2011, page 3 which is an excerpt from the serialization of Achike Udenwa's book:”Nigeria /Biafra Civil War-My Experience.”Alternatively , you may wish to read the actual book in order to understand the context of usage and how the cankerworm of corruption has become deeply –embedded in the foundational structure of the Nigerian nation.
It is interesting to note that Udenwa who was Imo State governor in the period, May 29th, 1999-May 29th, 2007, is one of the few former state governors who were given a certificate of clean health by the anti-graft bodies(EFCC/ICPC) after he left office as governor thus culminating in his appointment as Minister in the administration of the late President Musa Yar'Adua. So, his comment on the state of corruption in Nigeria should be seen as a frank and candid state of affairs on the bogey of corruption in Nigeria.
The object lesson of Udenwa's lamentation on corruption is that corruption has become a carcinogenic virus in the country to the extent that if we do not kill corruption, corruption will kill us. This is why it behoves every Nigerian, irrespective of his political, ethnic or religious affiliation, to give President Muhammadu Buhari the necessary support in his war against corruption.
In spite of the real and perceived shortcomings of Buhari's war on corruption, he has blazed a trail in his courage to frontally confront the monster of corruption by probing the immediate past government that handed over to him. The fact that I did not cast my vote for either the APC or President Buhari is immaterial. There is a national outcry that his war on corruption is skewed against the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). Yes, there is an abundance of evidence to lend credence to this allegation. But President Buhari has started a task which no administration in the past was able to embark on i.e. the courage to probe past acts of corruption, more so, probing a predecessor administration. By embarking on this courageous task, President Buhari has set an agenda of probing past administrations. Those who allege that there is partisanship in the war on corruption, should calm down and work assiduously to win the 2019 poll so that they also can probe Buhari's administration.
It may not be easy to expect President Buhari to probe some of the alleged corrupt members of his party, more so, since these perceived corrupt politicians funded his presidential electioneering. Such perceived corrupt politicians- and they are so well known- should be severely probed when another political party takes over the levers of power, say in 2019 or so. It is despicable that at a time a political party like the PDP should put its house in order, it is dissipating so much energy in intra-party crises. It is provocative that the Imo State PDP which lost the governorship elections in 2007,2011, and 2015 is still unable to conduct a simple congress election at the ward, local government and state levels. This shows that the PDP in Imo state has not learnt any lessons from its previous travails. It is for the sake of people like the members of PDP in Imo State that the revered scholar , George Santayana, once posited the maxim: ”Those who do not learn from history always repeat their mistakes.” It is the wish of any good citizen in Imo State, especially those who do not belong to any political party, that there should be no intra-party or even inter-party crises in the political parties in the state. This is the only way the state can make genuine progress. We pray for a harmonious relationship among the various political parties in the state.
Finally, it is my advice to Governor Okorocha to ensure he emulates the example of President Buhari in probing the predecessor administration prior to his ascendancy to power ; of course, this applies if he feels there were cases of corruption. So, Governor Okorocha must take adequate steps to screen the immediate past administration; this is to guard against any complaint in the future that a future administration is carrying out a probe that is skewed against his administration. So, he should decide what to do with his tenure now that he is controlling the levers of power.
This is the morale of Buhari's ongoing war on corruption. President Buhari knows full well that the next administration will subject his administration to scrupulous scrutiny.
Finally, one feels disorientated by the spate of denials from the members of PDP in Imo state in regard to the over N1 bn which was allegedly collected by the Presidential Campaign Committee, Imo State in 2015. It is distressing that up till now, nobody has accepted that he collected the money. One of those who was alleged to be involved in the scheme trivialized the issue when she said that a bullet should be shot in her head if she was found guilty, while others treated the matter in a perfunctory and cavalier manner. Well, nobody wants to bludgeon or decapitate anybody's head. The simple answer to the question has yet to be addressed i.e. who collected the money and how was it shared? In Oyo state, Chief Olu Falae said ,”Yes, I collected the money and disbursed to the party officials of Social Democratic Party(SDP)”. In Enugu state, Chief Jim Nwobodo said ,that he actually collected the money and remitted to the other groups. That was the situation in other states. It is only in Imo State that nobody has owned up to collecting the money; yet, nobody has said that the Presidential Campaign Committee in Imo state was not given any funding. Some of these shenanigans and intrigues from the PDP in Imo State do not go down well with the members of the citizenry, more so, those who had sympathy for the PDP in the 2015 elections. The PDP in Imo State should strive to outgrow petty and mundane crises in order to put its house in order.

Nairaland / General / Speaker Ihim Condoles With Njemanze Family by Dikatop(m): 6:12pm On May 14, 2016
Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Acho Ihim has expressed shock at the news of the demise of HRMy Eze (Pharm) Emmanuel Emenyonu Njemanze, the paramount traditional ruler of Owerri Ancient Kingdom.
The Speaker who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Ilochonwu Bennett described late Eze Njemanze as a frontline and flamboyant traditional ruler of repute who brought dignity and honour to the royal institution in the state and beyond.
He stated that the late traditional ruler conducted and distinguished himself in an excellent manner and with dignity that earned him the respect of everybody, including Governors and Presidents'.
Speaker Ihim who enjoined the family of the deceased Royal father to ensure that they emulate the good legacies and virtues that their late father is being celebrated at death, added that his demise has created a big vacuum in the traditional institution in the country and Imo State in particular, where he has served in several capacities.
He disclosed that the sudden exit of the Royal father to the world beyond has thrown the entire Imo State House of Assembly into a pensive mood and enjoined the family to be consoled by the good legacies their father left behind.
Nairaland / General / Imo CAN Protest Fulani Herdsmen Killings By IHEANYI Enwerem by Dikatop(m): 5:55pm On May 14, 2016
The Christian Association of Nigeria,Imo State chapter, Thursday came all out to condemn the massacre of South East indigenes in Enugu state on April 26,2016,by Fulani Herdsmen in Nimbo Community of Uzo-uwani Local Government Area, Enugu State.
This was made known when the religious association besieged Government House Chapel, Owerri, on a peaceful protest led by their state CAN president, Bishop Staffford Nwogu.
The protesters who were carrying placards with inscriptions like "We reject Islamization under any disguise, No to Herdsmen terrorism, we don't want grazing reserves,” among other inscriptions.
Nworgu, who said that they came in respect of the meeting South East CAN held in Enugu state, in response of the Fulani Herdsmen attack in Enugu, to go all out in calling the Eastern governors to condemn and also call the herdsmen to order.
The Imo CAN Chairman in his words said, "We have watched with dismay only few voices have spoken, while those that matter in the federation have not said anything about it".
In addition that the association is not happy with the way and manner such inhuman case is been tackled, base on the fact that no one knows which state in the South East will experience same issue, however called on the governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha to join in rejecting the grazing reserve planned to be located in South East, saying that this will lead to starvation and hunger in the land, as their cattle will be used to destroy crops in farmlands.
In his response, the Imo state Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, asserted that those behind the recent massacre in Enugu State will not go unpunished, base on the order by President Muhammadu Buhari to security forces in the country to apprehend herdsmen who perpetrate such criminal act.
Madumere, who also said that the rescue mission administration led by Owelle Rochas Okorocha has always worked tirelessly to ensure peaceful co-existence among South-Easterners and other regions, added that they condemn it in totality, and will work towards ensuring that such hostile act does not repeat itself again in the zone.
Nairaland / General / Naze Market Is Collapsing, Traders Cry Out By IFEANYI Nwanguma by Dikatop(m): 10:42pm On May 13, 2016
The President Timber and Allied Industrial Market Naze Jonathan Odikanwa (JP) who is also the Owerri Zonal Chairman, National Association of Nigeria Traders has expressed dismay over the abandonment of Naze Industrial Market by the present Imo State Government, describing it as unfortunate Odikanwa made the displeasure while speaking to newsmen recently in his office.
He hinted that before they left Wetheral Road for Naze, they had an agreement with the government, but regretted that till now government refused to keep to their own side of the agreement. He said "we had agreement with the state government before we left Wetheral, we agreed that any trading or work with building materials must relocate to Naze Market, but regrettably that understanding was not kept, hence some traders are still in the town doing same business we are doing here. We expect government to enforce the agreement by making sure that those markets are relocated to Naze. Infact nothing is happening here, they agreed that they will provide fire service station here, provide us with clinic, build water scheme, toilet facilities, electricity, and assess roads. But tell me among all these, the one that is here. Electricity and assess road suppose to be paramount in an industrial market of this magnitude, how can we operate without electricity and road. This market is about collapsing before Friendship International through the MOU we had with government to build operate and transfer back, came and build this one road we are using today.
After building the road he was ask to go by government without paying him kobo, quite unfair. What we are saying is that a market of this magnitude suppose not to have only one road.
We are asking government to open the road that connects the market to Akachi road". Odikanwa who frowned over the ugly situation decried a situation where his members will continue to die as a result of pollutions that comes from different kinds of generating machines "under that agreement, electricity and road was paramount, it is very important that they give us electricity, our only source of light here is generator, which has done more harm than good". He however applauded the commissioner for commence and industry.
Hon. Ifeanyi Ararume (Jnr) on the way be handled the matter they presented to his office, pointing out that they are looking forward for more harmonious and cordial relationship with his office. He pleaded with the rescue mission Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to come to their rescue, by providing to them some of the necessary things needed in the market. "We know his Excellency is working, we want to feel his presence in this market, Naze industrial market is the biggest and most peaceful market in the whole of Imo”. He said.
Nairaland / General / Imo PDP Congress: Group Drums Support For Ezekwem By IFEANYI Nwanguma by Dikatop(m): 10:23pm On May 13, 2016
The National President of Imo Peoples Consolidation Assembly (IPCA) and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State, Chief Emeka Akpahu has declared in clear terms that Barr. Charles Babatunde Ezekwem possesses every necessary qualities and qualifications needed to be elected the next state PDP Chairman at the congress.
Addressing newsman in Owerri Thursday, Akpahu who hails from Anara in Isiala Mbano LGA averred that Ezekwem remained the best candidate for the position.
He noted that Ezekwem has the required capacity and experience to work with all the leaders and stakeholders of PDP to deliver the party from its present state of opposition party to the ruling party again.
According to him, he applauded the wise decision and choice of Okigwe Zone PDP leaders in adopting Ezekwem as the consensus candidate for the PDP Chairmanship. He stressed that Ezekwem as a grassroot politician with an overwhelming followership has the required manpower and contact to mobilize the entire youths in Imo State to support the part at any election.
The youthful firebrand politician also added that Ezekwem is a dedicated and tested party man and team player who has distinguished himself in all the previous positions he has held in the past administration of PDP.
Akpahu, who was present at a PDP leadership meeting of Owerri and Okigwe Zone at the Orji residence of a PDP Chieftain and elder statesman Chief E C Iwuanyanwu where Ezekwem was adopted as the consensus candidate for Okigwe zone for the PDP Chairmanship, also declared his support to the idea of Chief Emeka Ihedioha whom he said suggested that Iwuanyanwu should be seen as a rallying point of Imo PDP instead of going to Abuja, to spend huge resources in lobbing for elective positions.
He disclosed that APC and APGA members who left PDP in anger in the past have vowed to return to the party if Ezekwem emerged the new State Chairman, cautioning that if the right things are not done to, reposition the party at the congress by allowing the right candidate to emerge the chairman, that PDP youths and other critical stakeholders may have no other option left than to decamp enmass to other political parties in the state.
