The Nigerian government has warned against planned protests to demand justice for victims of a shooting during peaceful demonstrations in Lagos last year demanding the dissolution of a notorious police unit long accused of abuses.

The #EndSARS protests, named after the police force, spread even after it disbanded and the government promised reforms.

Rights group Amnesty International said soldiers and police killed at least 12 protesters in Lekki and another district. The military and police have denied involvement.



Nigeria’s Information Minister Lai Mohammed said on Thursday peaceful protests were a constitutional right but warned of the risk that the upcoming rallies could descend into violence in the name of justice. He warned the protest risked being “hijacked by hoodlums”.

“Any further resort to violence in the name of #EndSARS will not be tolerated this time. The security agents are ready for any eventuality,” he said.

“We therefore strongly warn those who are planning to reoccupy Lekki toll gate on Saturday to desist.”

The unrest in October led to the deaths of six soldiers, 37 policemen and 57 civilians, as well as the destruction of 269 private and public properties, Mohammed said.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi state, Elias Mbam, has said that the party has the sole right to decide on the zone that would produce a presidential candidate in 2023 - Mbam made this known on Friday, February 12, in his hometown in Nwofe community area of the state - The chairman of RMAFC, however, berated those criticising the ongoing party membership registration and revalidation The chairman, Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Elias Mbam, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would decide which zone would produce the 2023 presidential candidate of the party at the appropriate time.
He noted that the interest of the zone was better achieved under APC, stressing that the decision to zone presidential slot was entirely reserved for the party.

Game Over For Fulani Herdsmen As Edo Youths And Vigilantes Team Up To Chase JanJan Weed From Their Land.

Narrating his ordeal to The Guardian in Benin City, Eghaghe said the herdsmen have been grazing on his farm since 2017, adding that he planted cocoa, cassava, pineapples and plantains on the 64 hectares farmland.

He said a more frustrating experience is the fact that the herdsmen grazed their cattle on every section of the farm, particularly where plantain, pineapple, cocoa, cassava and matured cocoa trees were grown, while they set some other sections of the farmland ablaze.

According to him, he started taking record of the destruction of his farmland since 2018, as the herdsmen set his plantain and cocoa plantation on fire.

“They bring their cattle to graze in my cassava farm and ended up uprooting the cassava for their cattle to feed and also cut down the plantains for their cattle to eat.

“They also destroyed four Geepee water storage tanks, two weed spraying pump machines and the keys to the farmhouse and assaulted some of my workers inflicted bodily injuries on them,” he said.

While appealing for relevant stakeholders to assist and the Ugo Community, Eghaghe said he had written several petitions to draw security agencies and the state government’s attention to the nefarious activities of herdsmen, but the attempt had not yielded the desired result.
