A 22-year-old man in Omu-Aran, Kwara, Sola Akangbe, died in the early hours of Saturday following wounds from a fire allegedly set on him by his biological father, Kehinde. The deceased, a wheelbarrow pusher, was said to have suffered high degree burns and was confirmed dead by doctors at Ajisafe Hospital, Omu-Aran, where he was rushed to by the police on Friday. NAN gathered that doctors at the hospital battled to save his life as the fire affected most parts of his body. The deceased was said to have been accused of stealing an undisclosed amount of money from some roadside beggars on Friday and was apprehended and handed over to his father. The father, a commercial driver, allegedly drove his son to a nearby bush on Omu-Aran-Isanlu-Isin road, tied his hands and legs before setting him ablaze. Sola, who was still alive when he was rescued, told his rescuers that his father was responsible for the act. The mother of the deceased, Rachael, was seen crying in the hospital after the death of her son was broken to her. The mother, who is a trader based in Odo-Owa, another suburb, told NAN that a friend had notified her of the development on phone before she rushed to the hospital to check on her son. The mother, who acknowledged that Sola was an unrepentant troublesome fellow, however, expressed shock at the father’s action. She disclosed that although she gave birth few weeks ago, she had divorced Kehinde about seven years ago as a result of irreconcilable differences. Mr Ajayi Okasanmi, the Police Public Relation Officer in the state, confirmed the incident, saying that the suspect was already in police custody and that investigation was ongoing. The former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Nyesom Wike, Mr. Opunabo Inko-Tariah, has defected to the All Progressives Congress. Inko-Tariah expressed his support for the governorship candidate of the APC in the 2015 general elections, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, adding that it was natural for him to reciprocate gestures. Speaking through a statement he signed and issued on Thursday, Inko-Tariah also commended the immediate past governor of the state and Minister of Transport, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, for coming to his aide when he took ill. Inko-Tariah said that although he had criticised Amaechi in the past, he pointed out that it was reinvigorating to note that the same Amaechi called to sympathise with him. Inko-Tariah added that to reciprocate the former governor’s gesture, he would do his best to ensure that Peterside emerge as the governor of the state should there be a rerun. He said, “It was surprising that a man I censured, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, CON, the Hon. Minister of Transport, was the same person who showed unsolicited love and care. “It was reinvigorating when he called to sympathise and also gave his widow’s mite while I was already in the United States for medical treatment after reading my resignation letter. How compassionate can a man be! “On my support for Hon. (Dr.) Dakuku Peterside, it is only natural that one reciprocates gestures. Therefore, I state my support for Rt. Hon. Amaechi and Dr. Peterside for the love they have shown. “More so, Dr. Peterside is a man whose refreshing initiatives and articulated policy options will help refuel the ethos of good governance in Rivers State.” On why he resigned as the special adviser to the governor, Inko-Tariah recalled how he sustained head injuries after falling in a bathroom and how he escaped assassination, adding that the governor did not show concern over his plight. He said, “As the special adviser to the governor, I fell in the bathroom and sustained serious head injuries. Two days later, I went to the office with the injury and all that the governor said was ‘thank God, you are alive’. Nothing after that. “I had a close shave with death as my car was riddled with bullets. The governor did not bother to, at least, ask what happened. Even when I puked blood and he was informed, he showed no concern.” He, however, stated that contrary to the insinuation that he was sacked by the Wike’s administration, he resigned as the special adviser to the governor. http://www.punchng.com/wikes-former-aide-defects-to-apc/ http://djwalexinfotech.com/thread/wikes-former-aide-defects-to-apc/ |

Are you in your late 20s or early 30s, perhaps single, and still thinking that you can start a family whenever you want? Researchers say you may be mistaken, warning that being young doesn’t mean that you are automatically fertile. The case of Mrs. Rosaline Akin is instructive. She got married at 25 and was quite optimistic of starting a family with her 33-year-old husband. However, pregnancy eluded them for five years, during which they ran from pillar to post, seeking solution to the numerous questions that bothered them. So, what are the reasons for infertility among otherwise young couples? Early menopause through smoking Physicians say young women are reaching menopause earlier than it used to be, sometimes 18 years earlier than normal. One of the reasons for this is what is medically termed Premature Ovarian Failure, which happens when a woman enters menopause before age 40. A new study conducted by scientists at the London’s Imperial College suggests that as many as six per cent of women (or one in 16) experience premature menopause. One of the reasons for it is smoking. Experts say the hydrocarbons in cigarette smoke can trigger egg cell death. Consultant Gynaecologist, Dr. Dominic Emeka, says men also suffer an equivalent of menopause due to testicular damage. “Testicular damage can result in the inability of the testicles to produce sperm. Once damaged, the testicles will not usually regain their sperm-making capabilities. This aspect of male infertility is analogous to menopause, though it’s not natural like one experienced by women,” Emeka explains. Poor diet and infertility Emeka says apart from smoking, poor diet might also impact anyone’s fertility, whether male or female. He warns, “If a woman is chronically malnourished, she can’t menstruate, because a minimum of 22 per cent body fat is necessary for normal ovulation and reproductive competence. “In men, severe malnutrition can affect sperm count, sperm motility and even reduce or stop sperm production altogether.” Consultant Nutritionist, Dr. Mabel Odunewu, says inadequate vitamin C and Zinc in the diet can cause infertility, alongside other factors. She urges young people to eat nourishing foods that are rich in vegetables and fruit. Sexually-transmitted infections Sexually-transmitted infections are other causes of infertility. Emeka notes that two commonest STIs, Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, are preventable causes of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease in women. PID is a known cause of infertility. “Untreated, about 10-15 per cent of women with Chlamydia will develop PID. Chlamydia can also cause fallopian tube infection without any symptoms. PID and ‘silent’ infection in the upper genital tract may cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, uterus, and surrounding tissues, which can lead to infertility,” the gynaecologist avers. He adds, “In men, gonorrhoea and Chlamydia can cause infertility by blocking the tubes that transport the sperm from the testes to the penis.” Alcohol consumption And if you are the type that drinks alcohol, you might as well be laying a foundation for infertility. This is because alcohol causes imbalances in the hormonal system that controls reproduction. A Professor of Reproductive Endocrinology, Oladapo Ashiru, says, “Even small amounts of alcohol can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle and reduce the chance of conceiving; while long-term heavy drinking can cause women to have irregular periods or stop ovulating. Periods can stop altogether or they can have an early menopause. “As for men, alcohol can affect the hormonal system that controls testosterone production, leading to infertility and other health issues such as anaemia, bone loss and decreased muscle function.” Environmental toxins Again, physicians say, men and women can become infertile through exposure to perfluorinated chemicals. These are substances used in manufacturing and other industrial processes. Industrial Chemist, Mr. David Ogundele, says these chemicals are also found in non-stick pans and food packaging. Emeka warns that women who have very high levels of PFCs in their body will have very low levels of oestrogen in their blood. Again, physicians say, if your thyroid or pituitary glands are not functioning well, you may become infertile if the situation is not diagnosed, treated and normalised. This is because these two glands play a part in hormone production, and any trouble with either or both of them could make a man or woman infertile! One-in-10-couples syndrome Emeka says one in 10 healthy couples of reproductive age will experience fertility problems. “The causes are variable and equally attributed one-third of the time to the female, one-third of the time to the male, and one-third of the time to unidentifiable reasons or to both partners,” he submits. He warns that among healthy women, fertility peaks in their mid 20s but begins to decline at age 27. By the time a woman is 37 years old, he says, fertility takes a plunge, naturally. He advises couples, “If you are in your mid 30s or older and trying to conceive, consult a fertility specialist if you fail to achieve pregnancy after six months of unprotected intercourse.” Indeed, researchers at Bristol and Brunel Universities evaluated 8,500 couples to determine the impact of age on the length of time it took to conceive. They discovered that while only eight per cent of men younger than 25 fail to impregnate their partners after a year of trying, the number grew to 15 per cent after age 35, suggesting that paternal age may also be a consideration for couples struggling with infertility. The bottom line: If you are over 35 and have been unable to conceive after six months of unprotected sex, see a competent doctor. http://djwalexinfotech.com/thread/you-may-be-young-but-infertile/ |

The were, however, granted an option of paying N20 million each by a Federal high court sitting in Lagos, western Nigeria. Their vessel MT Asteris, was also ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria together with the crude oil on board of the vessel. The four-count criminal charge number FHC/L/239C/15 was filed before the court by the Head Legal and Prosecution Department of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Gbolahan Latona. In the charge it was stated that the convicts on or about 27 March, 2015 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court conspired among themselves to commit an offence to wit: dealing in 3,423.097metric tons of crude oil without lawful authority or appropriate license and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 1(19)(6) of the miscellaneous offence Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and punishable under section 17 of the same Act. It was also alleged that the accused on the same day and time within the jurisdiction of the court without license stored 3, 423. 097 metric tons of crude oil in MT Asteris’ cargo tanks marked 1C, 3C and 4C and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 4 of the Petroleum Act, Cap P10, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. In the course of their trial, they all pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against them. After their pleas were taken, the defence counsel, Femi Adegbite applied for their bail and the prosecution did not oppose it. The trial judge, Justice Buba granted them bail in the sum of N50 million each with one surety who must be Nigerian, must provide evidence of means and will also deposit their international passport with the registrar of the court. The EFCC prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo called seven witnesses and tendered many. exhibits to prove his case while the accused testified for themselves. The accused after rigorous trial were found guilty by the court. In his judgement the presiding judge, Ibrahim Buba said the convicts were part of the saboteurs that have turned Nigeria into a laughingstock among the comity of nations, adding that Nigerians and non Nigerians must respect Nigeria and its laws. Consequently, Justice Buba sentenced the convicts to five years on each counts of the four counts with option of five milion aaira fine on each count. The sentences are to run concurrently. The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has warned those planning to hold demonstration in Lagos under the aegis of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB and the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, to discontinue such attempt to plunge Lagos into crisis as the state will not take kindly to such nefarious plan. https://djwalexinfotech.com/Webfiles-files/files/Joe-igbokwe1-356x336.jpg https://djwalexinfotech.com/Webfiles-files/files/Biafrans-504x322.jpg The party stated that with the heightened security challenges the state is facing, it would be foolhardy for any group to hide under the guise of protest to compromise the security of the state and be allowed such privilege. Lagos State Publicity Secretary, APC, Joe Igbokwe, said there is no way the state would sit idly by and allow politically sponsored hoodlums masquerading as Pro-Biafran protesters or any group at all to compromise the security of the state where the state has invested hugely in recent times. It warned those behind the plot to “arrest themselves as the security agencies led by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, has vowed to deal ruthlessly with anybody or group found to be involved in such protests. We hope the will of the law enforcement agencies in Lagos will not be tested at a time like this. “As a party that governs Lagos, it will be derelict of us to watch a group of politically-sponsored hoodlums tamper with the tight security system that has been effortlessly put in place by the state government to combat increasing crime rates in the state. We cannot allow these hoodlums, sponsored by politicians that failed woefully in the last general elections, to unleash mayhem on peace loving Lagosians so as to achieve dark political aims that run parallel to the interests of Lagosians. “It is obvious that the sponsors of the planned protest want to throw the state into needless mayhem by their act but the state will be ready to mete out to them the appropriate antidotes for such folly. Knowing full well that whatever they purport to represent is alien to Lagos and Lagosians, we wonder what the evil masterminds of these purported protests want to achieve in Lagos if not to plunge the state into unmitigated disruption and crisis and we state that Lagos will not allow such plans. “Knowing full well that hoodlums are meant to capitalize on any so-called protests to unleash mayhem on Lagosians and compromise its tight security, we have no doubt that the brains behind the protest have very sinister intents the state will not allow,” APC stated. The APC warned market leaders that were involved in this plot or allow their markets to be used for such dangerous activities to desist from such as the state would not only hesitate to show such market leaders the exit from such markets but would also take measures to ensure that such markets were not used as hatcheries for dangerous activities. “We warn every market leader to desist from acts or plots meant to weaken or compromise the security of Lagos as the state will henceforth take measures to ensure that any market that allows itself to be used as grounds for acts that compromise the security of the state will be thoroughly scrutinized to ensure bad eggs are forced out of such markets. “We urge Lagosians to be law abiding and report the masterminds of such evil plots that endanger the security of lives and properties in Lagos to appropriate security agencies for prompt action as we restate our support to the commitment of the present Lagos State government to guarantee maximum security of Lagosians,” the party said http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/12/15/steer-clear-of-lagos-apc-warns-biafran-protesters/. http://djwalexinfotech.com/thread/steer-clear-of-lagos-apc-warns-biafran-protesters/ |

If President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party had won the 2015 presidential election, the economy of Nigeria would have collapsed in one month, the Federal Government has said. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday. Mohammed said this in his reaction to a statement credited to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, that businesses might collapse in the next six months owing to the fact that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration had allegedly mismanaged the economy. The minister said the poor state of the country’s economy, especially the depreciation in the naira exchange rate, was the direct consequence of the “incomprehensible mismanagement” of the economy and the mindless looting of the national treasury under the immediate past administration, rather than any mismanagement by the Buhari administration. He said, “If there was still any honour left among thieves, there is no way the leaders of a party, under whose watch the nation’s economy suffered a monumental mismanagement and the Central Bank was turned to the ATM or piggy bank of a few people, will have the temerity to insult a government that is working hard to turn things around or the citizens, who are bearing the brunt of such mismanagement. “It is now clear to all Nigerians that if the PDP had won the last general elections, Nigeria’s economy would not have survived one more month, considering the battering it received under the immediate-past administration. “It is therefore unconscionable that those, who should show contrition and hunker down to avoid public opprobrium, are the same ones pointing an accusing finger at the Buhari administration.” Mohammed added, “Senator Ekweremadu complained about the depreciation of the naira without telling Nigerians who ‘dollarised’ the Nigerian economy by bribing many individuals and groups with dollars during the last elections, thus inflicting a knock-out punch on the local currency. “He also failed to tell Nigerians which government presided over the frenzied mop-up of dollars, either for ‘armsgate’ or for slush fund purposes, from the CBN, to a point where it almost ran out of the hard currency.” The minister said even though the Buhari administration met an economy that was in a coma, it had refused to use that as an excuse for inaction. He said the government had instead been working hard on measures that would turn the economy around and greatly offer relief to Nigerians by lifting millions, not thousands, of people out of poverty through a massive social intervention policy. He stated, “The outcome of the months of hard work will manifest soon in the 2016 national budget that will give succour to millions of Nigerians who are reeling from the fallout of the solecism of the immediate past administration.” Source: http://www.punchng.com/fg-carpets-ekweremadu-over-attack-on-buharis-govt/ http://djwalexinfotech.com/thread/fg-carpets-ekweremadu-over-attack-on-buharis-govt/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday restated the determination of his administration not to relent in its efforts to recover Nigeria’s stolen funds from looters. The President, who said this at the 41st convocation of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, urged the youths to support him in his efforts to end the scourge of corruption, which he said, had caused a major setback for the nation. Buhari, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, advised job seekers to shun corruption while searching for jobs. While identifying corruption as one of the biggest challenges of the country, the President also said the war against insurgency would soon be won. He urged Nigerians to support his government in the war against corruption and insurgency, while giving a fresh assurance that victory was guaranteed against the problems which had had negative effects on the image of the nation. The President said, “As representatives of your Alma Mater, OAU, you have a lot to contribute to making this country a place worth living and reducing the brain drain that has plagued us for many years in the past.” Meanwhile, Buhari on Saturday evening admitted that the current figure of unemployed youths in Nigeria was extremely dangerous for the country. According to a statement on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President spoke at a dinner he hosted in honour of the visiting Alumni Association of the Indian Defence Services Staff College, Wellington where he received part of his own military training. Shehu quoted the President as decrying a situation in which 60 per cent of the country’s 64 per cent youth population was unemployed. “This (youth unemployment rate) is extremely dangerous for our country,” Buhari reportedly told his guests. To stem the tide, the President said the revival of industries would get his administration’s attention the moment he finished with the preparation of the 2016 budget. “Very soon, we will sit down to see how we can rehabilitate industries. We are meeting after the budget to see how to revive industry and secure the economy. We will do this in order to clear the problem of unemployment,” he said. The President explained that the insecurity in the North-East, abduction for ransom in the South and the sabotage of the oil industry in the Niger Delta region had one connection or the other with poverty and unemployment. The delegation was led to the President by the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Ajjampur Ghanashyam, and it included a number of retired Indian Army Generals who were Buhari’s course mates. “A major point of concern is the need to redeem our image in the comity of nations by a complete eradication of the hydra-headed monster of corruption that has lived among us for several years. “At present, efforts are ongoing and at top gear to recover national treasures that have been looted by various individuals and bodies in the past. I urge you, and very strongly too, to shun corruption in its entirety in the process of job-seeking and general living. “Although living conditions in Nigeria are not yet optimal and at par with developed countries, we are assiduously working towards it and we will get there with the cooperation of all and sundry. “Embracing corruption will only take us backwards, soil our good name and destroy our common heritage. I want to believe that I can count on you to individually and collectively improve the image of the country by being worthy ambassadors of your families and of this great and noble institution.” The Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who was installed the chancellor of the OAU, was conferred with the honorary doctorate degree. He lauded the anti-corruption war of the Buhari administration. The President, African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, was also conferred with honorary Doctor of Science. Prof. Jacob Olupona was also conferred with an honorary Doctor of Letters, while Chief Oyekunle Alex Duduyemi was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Business Management. http://www.punchng.com/well-recover-looted-funds-buhari-insists/ http://djwalexinfotech.com/thread/well-recover-looted-funds-buhari-insists/ |
