Music/Radio / Upcoming Artistes; The Rush Hour Vendetta by djsean(m): 9:26pm On Jun 02, 2013
Source: http://aceworldteam.com/2013/06/rush-hour-vendetta/

Quoting Dr. Sid from the Flytime TV interview with the Mavin Crew, "you cannot rush creativity". D'Prince then explained further a logical parable, "recording 20 tracks in a day is attainable but it's of more quality to record just a track in 20 days".

Over time, music lovers and fans of very talented artistes once had to suffer a period of silence from their favorite artistes; this period is what I term "the cooking-something-doper era" ... lol. "The 20/20 Experience" suffered a lag of 6-years, though Justin Timberlake was caught up in the movies, he sure came back to the music scene with more than just a classic. ModeNine, Naeto C, 2face Idibia and a host of other top acts in the Nigerian music industry are known to follow such routes. They take their time to record good music that would remain for a long time on most playlists. My worry is focused on the upcoming artistes, they hardly allow their listeners enjoy a certain fresh track from them before recording and releasing another.

Yeah! I know I'm so much of a "talk his mind + controversial writer", but the truth has to be spoken, or rather in this case, written.

My review team warned me against mentioning names in this write-up, so I'd just stick to our agreement and term the faulted with representations. Let's take a journey back in time to the commencement of Rapper A and Rapper B's music career. They both broke into limelight after been announced winners of a certain competition, 1st and 2nd place respectively. It sure was tough deciding who tops the other but the judges sure made their pick, though the audience made some grumble. As it stands at this very moment, both rappers have got a mix-tape to their credit - very cool right? Yeah! But, which rapper had the most buzz? Okay, I better get back to focus. I'd just break it all down.

The Happenings, My Worry, My Fear, My Disappointment, My Findings, The Justice, My Advice and then a little Research.

The Happenings.
Rapper A has had more tracks out than Rapper B. While Rapper A hits the studio frequently, Rapper B had been hitting his brains and sheets respectively. While Rapper A had been recording and releasing tracks almost every week, Rapper B had been constructing and building his skills and story-line daily.

My Worry.
With so much tracks out by Rapper A in so short a time, he's fast beginning to lose his authenticity with his fans and listeners. Doing the same thing over and over again could sure get boring over time, especially when you stick to the same rap style or pattern.

My Fear.
Rapper B might be tagged extinct by his followers, as they sure would be asking why he's been silent and where he is, e.t.c. This might actually get a few music lovers of his, switching over to another consistent dope fast-rising artiste. In other news, Rapper A might be enjoying all the buzz from his fast-depreciating frequently dropped tracks, but in so less a time, his previous tracks would fade off so fast as new materials erupt from him.

My Disappointment.
Good music is not all about consistency, it's about the content and the duration it stays on the playlist, lips and heart of music lovers, fans and followers of the artistes. A lot of upcoming acts actually think the more music they make, the better their chance to get more buzz or create more awareness. Give Rapper A a space of few weeks and I can assure you he'd be asking himself where he went wrong.

My Findings.
The Team got a mail from a certain record label and I was shocked to see that it was a material from Rapper B; well-organized mail, enticing Press Release kit with Lyrics, Bookings info, Biography and all necessary details attached. Immediately we downloaded the track and listened to it, gaddamnit...sh*t was just too dope. The story-line was fantastic, build-up was awesome, rap-style was fabulous, delivery on point. It was no shock the buzz the track got when it got published online. Now, same day, Rapper A dropped a track too - believe me, it didn't do well online. A lotta people went controversial on it, especially when the outro of the track totally focused on a wrong agenda by the artiste. Now that would be a topic for us to discuss some other day, let's still keep their identity hidden.

The Justice.
Rapper A is yet to get himself a record deal, he must really be saying to himself - "this music industry is f**ked up to not just notice my hardwork", but really, he's the one f**king things up for himself. Now, I understand why the outro of his latest track had to speak so. Kudos to Rapper B for understanding the industry and earning himself just what every upcoming act wishes for, a Record Deal.

My Advice.
I made a strong move to write this article not for the existence of dislike or praises for any of the above represented rappers, but strictly on the fact that I'm a writer who won't stop at anything till he's said his mind out. I really would like to add that upcoming acts should please take their time to record good music; don't let all the hype and buzz you get online get into your head. The same people who raise you up can also pull you down. Respect your fans by giving them more than just the regular music you do. And lastly...be creative, take your time to develop more skills and explore. If music is your hustle, your passion, your life, then give it your all-in-all.

My Research.
This might be me just airing my mind. I might, at a certain point have stated wrongly, so I'ld throw out a general question to 3 prominent female acts in our own music industry to buttress this write-up. This way, we all stay even and oriented about the whole write-up.

Question: Can you state and explain just one of the advantages of music recess over frequent releases as it pertains to upcoming acts in the Nigerian music industry?

It gives their brand time to grow, allows the song saturate, gives them time to milk money off the song and also gives them time to really think of the next song, weigh the market well, before they drop a new song. Those who take their time, come out with better songs that would last longer and pull more weight than those who rush through. If you rush your songs out, they will also fade off in a rush. ...Cute Kimani [PR/On-Air-Personality]

Basically, it aids the trend value of the artiste's latest work as it also provides room for the artiste to work and research extensively on his/her forth-coming project. ...Hawlsea [Hostess, Superior Radio & Television (SRTV)]

Well, What most upcoming acts believe is that, consistency gets them closer to fame because their name is seen on blogs all the time, but it's only few that realizes that consistency without adequate analysis and planning is useless. The only advantage obviously seen here is that those artistes who take their time always plan for something real good and real big [most even save up, to feature a top talented artiste or get assistance from an experienced producer or even pay a writer to come up with a good story-line (most would rather do this themselves anyway)] end up getting to mingle and meet people who link them up with influenced people in the music industry and they, one way or the other start building a solid career in their music. Some get Record Deals, Business Deals, e.t.c. Just like our fore-fathers would say, "slow and steady wins the race". As for those artistes that are busy believing in themselves as the best hereby recording new songs everyday, instead of observing and learning; they end up stuck within the four walls of the studio busy recording and recording and using the little cash they have to keep promoting and promoting and end up in the same place - "upcoming". ...Modupe [CEO, MosConcept]

Well, that seals it all up. I better drop my quill now before I get busted.

Ciao.

In anticipation, "The Scripted Documentary Series" comes out soon. #Bless!

Nairaland / General / Oga At The Top: The Fuzz ...written By Ace Nobis by djsean(m): 4:06pm On Mar 16, 2013
I write this with the gustatory sensation of the heart, as after this incident I really do now understand that most Nigerians are yet to come to terms with the definition of "true patriotism".

A patriot is a proud supporter or defender of his/her country and it's ways - good, bad or ugly.

It also brings about the unification of individuals but it looks as though it’s only when we are playing a soccer match as a nation, that’s when we portray both a unified and undivided spirit and it’s not supposed to be that way. All around the country, we have issues of inter-ethnicity both with tribes and in religion and it's only when we play as a football nation, that’s when we seem to set these differences aside and even all religions are then unified.

What’s the fuzz about "My Oga At Top?".

A high ranking NSCDC official came on Channels Television, made some statements not worthy of someone in his position and hierarchy, and come the next day, every Tom, Dick, Harry, James, Moshood, Jude, Henry, Sheyi, Smith and Nani are making fun of him. Yes, it was hilarious but can’t we just let sleeping dogs lie? Some have already printed and started wearing T-shirts exhibiting “My Oga @ The Top”, some artistes have made tracks about it, DJ’s are making mixes and everyone on the social media is having a go. When did we get to this level, when did we all forsake ourselves? Nigeria is a country with an assembly of highly intellectual individuals with high ambitions coupled with a formidable win-win attitude. The brunt of my displeasure is not with the NSCDC official, rather it's with the people who are making a statement and writing posts with videos on youth-centric websites with the event created. We are supposed to be protective of our country and not to belittle it with posts and videos on Youtube. No matter what happened, we are supposed to contain it and not leak it because the whole world is watching; it’s the internet remember, and we are not the only country taking advantage of this fabulous piece of technology! Put into writing, "my oga at the top" on Google’s search engine and it goes wild on the first page; we don’t even know how far this has traveled If you are affiliated to a parent or relative within the Armed Forces, and I'm not talking para-military here, they understand that every country's survival is all about intelligence and espionage. Every country running Intel knows that you do not take with levity a viral video. All countries are keeping tabs on us and all we do; that’s why when we have a disaster or conflict over here, before you say rock, paper, scissors, it's already on CNN. To make it worse, Channels TV is also available on DStv, so we just can’t tell how many viewers around the world saw this. Then you go to the Embassy tomorrow and visa is denied and yet you wonder why? Unlike we [Nigerians], the white folks are thorough people sieving and analysing every bit of available info and they know that for a leader such as the NSCDC official to have been the person to moderate on behalf of them over a discussion on a programme via National TV with live audience, then it means he’s the best personnel they have. So then would it be wrong if they adjudged that the youths and the young adults in our country cannot be in any way different from the leaders presiding over them.

Finally, the NSCDC official in question already has a career ahead of him and would definitely get promoted in due course of time, though he may have made several blunders on live TV, but at least all praises went to his boss which is what I noticed and that’s remarkable because that signifies “loyalty”, a trait which even most Nigerians jesting at him lack these days.

In the end; his faults takes a toll on us and our future as heads of industries and we are still laughing at a joke and tweeting, instead of reflecting on the damage already done and be sober because of the times ahead.

Music/Radio / 5 Tips To High 5: Get Your Music Noticed By Music Bloggers by djsean(m): 7:45pm On Mar 06, 2013
Welcome back to the series…

Last week, I had a swell time with DJ Sean, Demmy and Ibukun…It was more of a Pal Party than the “TeamWork” meeting we intended. Amidst the fun, we got serious on some issues, music submission being one of major emphasis.

************************************************************

As both a freelance PR affiliated with a lotta blogs and founder of TGM Promotions, a music platform that specializes in helping upcoming artistes deliver and disseminate promotional music, I’ve witnessed first-hand the good, the bad and the ugly associated with artiste PR and vying for music blogger and press attention. Speaking with the knowledge of a freelance PR, I often times receive upwards of 30-40 new music submissions a day. Many top tier bloggers receive even more than that [DJ Sean's figure got me scared of blogging]. This means that your music submission, assuming you sent it via e-mail, will fall somewhere in between the hundreds or maybe even thousands of other non-music related spam e-mails that the blogger receives on a daily basis.

There are a number of things that you can do as an artiste or artiste manager to give your submission a better chance of being opened, being viewed, being listened to, and then hopefully, being written about and shared.

Here goes…

1. UNDERSTAND YOUR PRESS LIST
Have the individuals on your press list written about similar artistes in the past? Do they only write about pop music or do they also tend to write about up and coming artistes? Do they only write about certain genres of music? Does your music fall within that genre? A quick way to see if a blog has written about an artiste you think you’re similar to is to run a Google Search with “site:blogURL artist name” – Google will show you a list of search results from that blog featuring that artiste.

2. HAVE A DETAILED SUBJECT LINE
If you’re going to stand out from the crowd you better have a damn good subject line. Is your song a new release? Say so. Is there an MP3/Video attached? Call that out. Is your song featuring a big name artiste that might be more well-known than yourself? Call it out.

3. KEEP THE DESCRIPTION SIMPLE
Remember that the recipients of your song submission receive many submissions per day. They don’t want to read a novel when determining whether or not to listen to and post a song. Tell a concise story about who you are and your music. Have you been featured elsewhere? Toured with a famous band? Have a famous cousin? Why are you different? Why should we care about you?
During a chat with Demmy of AceWorldTEAM:
“…the pitches that get my most attention are the simple ones that make it easy to check out the music. When it comes to indie/unknown artistes, it all depends on the music. If I get an e-mail with 20 attachments, a short story’s worth of writing, and links to everything the artiste has ever done, I’m not likely to check it out. If I see a simple message with one song, and if I like that song, I’m going to do what I can to support“. – BigDan of TGM Promotions.

4. INCLUDE ESSENTIAL SONG ASSETS
Music bloggers really like presentation. If you’re lucky enough to have a compelling subject line to get an e-mail open, further bring the music blogger into your world with well-designed artwork.
DJ Sean of AceWorldTEAM makes the point: “any artiste at this time needs artwork and presentation. If you actually have really good cover art, that’s what I gravitate towards and click on first“.
Ensure that the blogger has all the assets they need to create a solid blog post. This means include links to music videos, external URLs like your website and social media presences in addition to your artwork and song description.
“Always present yourself professionally and keep a very strong brand image. It is all about keeping your brand and product as high quality as possible”. – DJ Sean

5. THE INFAMOUS MEDIA PLAYER EMBED
The most essential asset to include in your e-mail is a link to your music. This is so essential that I’m giving it it’s own section. Realize that even successful bloggers sometimes have other day jobs that don’t involve blogging. This means that a lot of work is done via mobile phone. Attach your .mp3 file [or a snippet at least] to the e-mail itself when sending so that the blogger can listen to your song while on the move, but don’t stop there! Also clearly call out in your e-mail where the blogger can go to get the media player embed code so that they can easily publish a media player with your song. If you want to get super fancy, include the actual embed code in your e-mail as well.

***Tha Thumb Down***

The Most Common Mistake

“Spamming. Spamming is the biggest mistake that a lot of independent artistes make. A lot of artistes ask me, “how can I get noticed? How can I blow up? How can I get my music on the top sites or blogs? Well, you have to create a buzz for yourself on your own. Spamming is so not right; spamming me, sending me e-mails, sending me tweets is not going to help anybody. So what you have to do is create noise for yourself. When you create the buzz, I’ll be knocking on your door. Stop spamming. It simply does not work“.
Also, a lot of artistes disrespect bloggers. Just because you have their e-mail, phone number or Twitter handle amongst many other social outreach media doesn’t mean you should bug them constantly and talk rude to them if they haven’t uploaded your song[s] or file[s]. Show them respect and be polite to them.
And remember…

“Great music will always transcend, but to get it out there and help it in that process, you have to have a lot of things in place. A compelling story, identity, distinctive style, and aggressive personality. Put yourself out there with those bloggers/fans/community respect and engage them with no end”. – Ibukun, Protocol of TGM Promotions.

Music/Radio / Kelly Hansome - OME NWANNE by djsean(m): 8:44am On Feb 14, 2013
In honor of Valentine’s Day, Kelly Hansome has decided to follow up the internationally acclaimed "Africa Unite" with "Ome Nwanne", which was produced, written, and performed by him for Uglybeatz. Performed in Kelly Hansome’s native Igbo tongue, "Ome Nwanne" allows the audience fully understand the profound underlying meanings hidden in each verse. It speaks to the heart of every human being who has ever had the opportunity to help his fellow "brother" as well as be on the receiving end of aid. "Ome Nwanne", which is personal in nature, is also used as a medium for Kelly Hansome to show a debt of gratitude to those he calls his "brothers and sisters"; those who he has had the fortunate occasion to cross paths with not only in the entertainment industry, but generally.

On this Valentine’s Day, take time to remember those who have had an impact in your life and those whose lives you have had the occasion to impact. Everyday creates a new opportunity to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, provide shelter for the homeless, or educate children; which are the primary objectives of the Kelly Hansome Foundation. | ENJOY!!!

Music/Radio / Exclusive!!! Dj Jimmy Jatt Ft. Ice Prince & Iceberg Slim - Cool As Ice by djsean(m): 6:48am On Feb 12, 2013
World-renowned Nigerian music legend, DJ Jimmy Jatt makes a statement of intent with his new street-hop killer, the cleverly-titled "Cool As Ice". Produced by Chopstix, "Cool As Ice" sees the crown prince of Nigerian hip-hop Ice Prince, in his element as he ruthlessly rides the synth-ridden beat to deliver a colorful, high-octane performance alongside another contender, Iceberg Slim. Clever, cheeky lyrics as well as a super-sized serving of braggadocio are the main characteristics of this track, as DJ Jimmy Jatt sticks to his hip-hop roots to deliver a standout-track produced by Chopstix that demands constant replay, in what is already shaping up to be a massive year for Nigerian hip-hop. As always, DJ Jimmy Jatt’s seemingly effortless creative combination with both artistes will most certainly be a massively satisfying serving for fans, who have been impatiently a follow-up to his last project. | ENJOY!!!
