Meanwhile, you've noticed how in this thread several people have been called out. One thing is a common denominator, the fact that people waste precious time before bringing the issue to light. I think in cases like this, the earlier you bring it to the fore, the better. It would help to keep the defaulter on his toes, and to know he would have to act accordingly. But if you decide to deal with it on your own, the person might take advantage of that to stall you.

There are people that come to their senses when they are being called out. Instead of them to act accordingly from the get go, they capitalise on your leniency and understanding to act waywardly.

Get your money back ASAP in whatever way necessary.

Unfortunately there's nothing the mods can really do here as this is beyond Nairaland, the best they can do is to ban him so he can no longer transact here. Or provide data to the law enforcement agency concerning the issue if it's been requested.

Moving forward, the victims can take legal/illegal action against the culprit (using dmcdad's word) to recover their money/item.

The best thing here is not to allow matters degenerate to a certain level before we speak out so that appropriate actions can be taken against the accused.

One thing I am yet to comprehend is the fact that, why would people let matters get stretched too thin before they come to lay it bare? I think that in part adds to the unnecessary elongation by the supposed seller. Whenever issues come to the fore, one should be able to work within a reasonable time-frame, after which, if the person fails to do the needful, there is need to call the person out pronto. Although, if there is a substantial reason why the person fails to meet the agreed date, there could be a grace period, which is discretional to the buyer. And if this supposed grace period elapses, then there is absolute need for the person to be called out with immediate alacrity. Firstly, to bring things to light of how the person handles situations as that, and also to warn or fend-off potential buyers who would wanna do business with the person. Hence, the need for you to bring things out as quickly as possible is not for you alone, but also for the benefit of others.

Also, it has been stated here more times than not, that there will always be issues, but what determines who we are is how we handle such issues when they arise. And it has also been overly emphasised that you sometimes cannot know the state of devices, at least not entirely. So therefore, there could be times when a device could be reported as bad or having one issue or the other. This is something that goes beyond our control. But the question that emanates from my head is; how do you handle it when it arises? Do you handle it with a care-free attitude? Do you take it upon yourself to resolve it ASAP in order to set precedents right? That I think should be what every sane and honest seller should do.

Coming down to the culprit, well permit me to use that word. Everyone can not be wrong, never! If one person calls you out, well maybe that could be bad luck. If another does so, well maybe one of those days where you just find things spiraling out of your control. But when it becomes like the norm or a mainstay, then we know something is absolutely wrong with you as a person. Honestly, I find it extremely hard to live with owing someone, even when the person doesn't bother me about it; let alone someone whose business or means of livelihood is tied to that and yet you have the guts to hold down the person's funds, and probably doing business with it, while the person suffers. How does someone live with such a feeling? How do you sleep with such a burden? Jeez!

Like it is said, a good name is better than silver and gold. Forget about what people would make you think, there is nothing sweeter than maintaining your name and carrying it with high regards. But sometimes, out of our selfish desires, we tend to wanna negate our ethics and do things contra bonos mores. If only you always remind yourself of the need to be at right with your conscience and with others, then we would definitely have less trouble dealing with issues like this.

The question now is... What will be the way forward in handling this techprodigy guy? Because, whether we like it or not, issues like this affect everyone, because it breeds scepticism in the hearts and minds of everyone here, both old and new. There are still good people here, some not so known like some others who are well-known, what do you think happens to the not-so-known guys? One could think, if this could happen with someone that is well-known, what is the probability worse wont happen with someone that is not well known by the populace here? Although that is not the way to look at things, but then, you wont blame someone for thinking in that direction.

Anyway, something definitely needs to be done ASAP. Else, this place would get transmogrified into an alley where the supposed weak are trampled upon because of our nonchalance and inaction.

Or we could deploy what is obtainable in the Business section by having a Blacklist of fraudsters and another for trustworthy, real business people to help would-be buyers make informed decision Or have a list of people that can escrow.


These are the best ways forward.

But many don't understand how this thing works, from deal hunters down to the resellers, especially the newbies. I'll like to share some personal tips, if some will open their minds enough to understand it.

To start with, I don't know if to call myself a deal hunter or not, cuz what I basically do is buy my items, list them as a TLC deal, if it gets sold here, fine. If it doesn't, I sell them to interested resellers here when it gets to naija and if it still doesn't get sold to them, I sell to my direct end users. Selling items as a TLC deal means 'Sell fast + little profit', selling to reseller means 'Average sale time + average profit' while selling to direct end users means 'Sell slow + big profit'. You can see they all have their pros and cons.

Now as a deal hunter, I only buy items that I want myself, if it doesn't make sense to me, I don't even buy it. When you buy items that you want yourself, if it doesn't get sold as a TLC deal, you'll either sell to resellers when it lands or sell to end users. But some deal hunters refuse to do proper check and question themselves on what they are buying because they are after their instant profit, strictly as a DEAL HUNTER! If you take this as more than deal hunting, you'll have lesser issues.

As a reseller, you have 2 options of buying, a TLC deal which you haven't seen or a deal already in naija which you can examine properly, two things are involved, buying a TLC deal means higher risk and higher profits while already in naija deals means minimal risk with reduced profit. So it's up to you to decide which you want. Truth be said, most resellers here want NO RISK and HIGH PROFIT without even putting their money, that's when you see posts like... "Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (already in naija) needed at reseller price. Budget is 100k" or "iPhone X 256GB with box and accessories needed, not more than 100k". It doesn't work that way, if you want no risk and high profit, this business isn't for you.

As a buyer, you need to do your background check before buying or paying a deal hunter or reseller, especially one you've not transacted with before, this will save you stress, worries and ensure your risk is reduced. The keyword is there, reduced risk. Every and any business has its own risk, might be very small or big, put that in mind. Some times, issues happens and it might not even be the pickers fault, deal hunters fault, resellers fault or your fault but when you already have that in mind, it'll be easier for the parties involved to sort things out.

To wrap it up, no matter how small or big a market is, there will always be top-rated sellers and buyers, it also applies to this thread, I won't list them out so it's up to you to do your due diligence as a deal hunter, reseller or buyer to know who is who.
