The new national identity card will replace the current voters card after the 2015 general elections, the National Identity Management Commission , has said. The Director of Technical Services at the commission, Mr Emma Ogungbe told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja that the identity card would enhance the integrity of the electoral process. He explained that with the new identity card, NIMC could give the details of every eligible voter from a particular Local Government Area, Senatorial District or State in Nigeria. “During election, you go to a polling booth, you get in there, what you do is carry your ID card with you, they check your name against what NIMC is giving them, tick it and you vote.” Ogungbe assured Nigerians that the new national ID card would put a permanent end to cases of election rigging including double or multiple registrations or voting. He said the “new card is error-proof’’. “In fact, one of the ministers not long ago even came out to say after the 2015, the NIMC National ID card will become the voters’ card. “So, that just tells us that very soon, the National ID card will also become the voters card and there would be no need for ad hoc registration by INEC again. “That money can now be used by government for other purposes to better serve Nigerians. “We (NIMC) are able to identify you to be you. A time will come if government says NIMC, give me details of everyone in Lagos State, ages 18 and above, we will give it to them; it will be a seamless operation. “Give me the list of people in so-so local government or the whole of Anambra state ages 18 and above, we will give it to them because they’ve already been in our database and it’s been sanitised, we know they are who they say they are.’’ |
There are indications that the Federal Government will stop kerosene subsidy in 2014 bringing to an end a scheme that has been widely criticised as corrupt and controversial. Our correspondent learnt on Wednesday that no provision was made for kerosene subsidy in the N4.77tn 2014 budget proposal presented to the National Assembly by President Goodluck Jonathan. Ministry of Finance sources, who gave the hint, said the budget proposal did not make any provision for kerosene subsidy. The Federal Government spent N634bn to subsidise the retail price of kerosene in the past three years. The Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Mr. Dakuku Peterside, who recently condemned this as wasteful spending, also said N110bn was spent on kerosene subsidy in 2010, N324bn in 2011 and N200bn in 2012, which came up to N634bn in the three years. He said, “In the year 2010, we spent N110,068,533,988 to subsidise kerosene. This is not the cost of kerosene but the cost of subsidising the product alone. In 2011, it got worse and the government spent N324,089,961,319 on kerosene subsidy. Although we have yet to reconcile this, we spent N200bn in subsidising kerosene in 2012. “So, in three years, we have spent N634bn subsidising kerosene. This is one third of what we spend in a year on capital budget.” Despite the huge spending on Kerosene subsidy, the masses could not, until recently, buy the product at the regulated price of N40.90k per litre. They had settled for alternative sources of energy such as firewood, charcoal, sawdust, electricity and gas. However, this has recently changed as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, through the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association, has been selling kerosene at N50 per litre. Commenting on this, the President, Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association, Mr. Dayo Adeshina, said it would be a welcome idea if kerosene subsidy could be stopped by the government. He said, “Government needs to take a conscious decision to drive a mass shift from kerosene to LPG as it was done in Indonesia. The Indonesian government took a conscious decision to stop kerosene subsidy, which was gulping $9bn a year. They found that they would only need to invest $2bn in cylinder and cooking stoves to save $7bn. “We need to get to that level when we will consciously shift from kerosene to LPG and that can only happen with the right government policy.” Adeshina argued that the N634bn spent on kerosene subsidy had little impact on the masses, saying it enriched only a few people. |

I-G orders adequate security in varsity campuses nationwide Abuja – The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, has ordered immediate provision of adequate security in and around university campuses nationwide. This is contained in a statement issued by CSP Frank Mba, the Force Public Relations Officer, on Thursday in Abuja. The statement said the measure was designed to secure life and property in the institutions and provide enabling environment for lecturers, students and other members of staff to go about their lawful businesses without hindrance. “The directive is a proactive and confidence- boosting measure designed to ensure that nothing untoward happens in our academic communities,” it said. The statement directed all Command Commissioners of Police to personally oversee the intensification of surveillance in universities in their states. It ordered them to “take all necessary security measures needed to provide for the safety and security of members of staff and students as well as property within the various Campuses”. It urged lecturers, students and Nigerians within the institutions to remain law-abiding and go about their legitimate businesses without fear of molestation or intimidation from any quarters. It will be recalled that the Federal Government on Thursday gave universities lecturers, who had been on strike since July, one week ultimatum to resume academic activities. |
Nasir Fagge and Goodluck Jonathan The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the Federal Government’s December 4 ultimatum issued to universities teachers to return to the classrooms is a clear indication that the government is not committed to implementing any of the resolutions it reached with the union. While reacting to the threat of the Federal Government to sack the lecturers if they fail to call off their five-month strike by Wednesday nest week, ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said the union was shocked that the government could have such plan when there was a shortfall of 60,000 lecturers in Nigerian universities, owing to the government’s failure to employ enough teachers. He added that the threat would not hinder the union’s determination to ensure that Nigerian universities were well funded. He said, “It is a pity if the Federal Government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with the union. This is why we find it difficult to trust our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000? We are not in a military era. The military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can re-open the schools. ASUU did not shut the universities; it was the school management that ordered the students to go back home.” ASUU added that the FG was wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in the country by failing to perfect the resolutions so that classes could resume in the schools. Making reference to the failure of the government to honour the agreements it entered with resident doctors and health workers after they suspended their strikes, the union said it had reasons to be wary of the government, adding that the threat was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians who were waiting for the government for a positive reaction. “With the latest action, the government has shown that it is not committed to all it has been saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of N200bn is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and December is around the corner. If they don’t do that now, when do they want to do it?” Aremu said.

ASUU, FG meet in Presidential Villa to resolve strike Vice President Namadi Sambo led the Federal Government team in a renewed negotiation with ASUU to resolve the lingering strike that has crippled the universities. The meeting held at Aguda house, Presidential Villa on Friday. In attendance on the part of the Federal Government were the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike, Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie and technical staff of the Federal Ministry of Education. Scan-News gathered that ASUU President, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge and his executives were accompanied to the meeting by Committee of Vice Chancellors leadership. It was learnt that an earlier meeting between Barr. Wike and ASUU leadership teased out areas of possible concession of both sides. Scan News gathered the Federal Government may concede to ASUU the right to participate as a major stakeholder in the execution of NEEDS Implementation Projects in the universities. ASUU had complained that the Suswam Committee excluded them from the implementation of projects in the universities. On the part of ASUU, the meeting agreed that they should suspend their strike, while the process of implementation continues. A Vice Chancellor of a northern university attending the meeting said that key issues will be ratified and the strike may be resolved in less than two weeks. According to him, the vigour and forthrightness introduced by the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Wike who opened diplomatic channels with ASUU leadership. “Our belief is that with the ground work already done, this strike should not last more than two weeks”, he said. If they strike a compromise, the Federal Government will release ASUU’s september Salary today and the lecturers will get their alert next week, it was gathered. The leaders after the two hours meeting that ended about 2pm on Friday did not issue a statement. Scan News gathered that they will reconvene on Monday before Sallah. |

ASUU STRIKE LATEST: "NO WORK, NO PAY" now implemented. The Federal Government has resolved to stop the salaries of protesting universities lecturers over the ongoing strike of the its Academic body, ASUU. The decision to invoke the “no work, no pay” rule was said to have been officially taken yesterday, even though some universities had earlier complained of no salaries since August. It was gathered that the government has passed a directive to the various universities governing councils to stop payment of salaries of the striking lecturers forthwith. The ASUU Zonal Chairman in Abuja, Mr Clement Chup confirmed the development yesterday after a zonal conference of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, which took place at the Gwagwalada campus to review the nationwide strike. He said his colleagues were yet to receive their September salaries. According to him, “we have resorted to other welfare strategies to cope with the effect of the strike, particularly to contain the various attempts by government to break the resolve of the union. “Part of the welfare strategy, involved distributing food items, giving out soft loans and cash advances to members.” He urged members of the public to ignore the rumour that the strike has been called off. He said: “Nigerians should disregard rumours making the rounds that the three months old strike has been called off”, adding that “the strike continues until the government demonstrates a positive inclination towards implementing the 2009 agreements and the 2012 Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties.” Abeg ASUU and FG we soon tired... no Allah for dose sturborn lectural |
