Politics / My Predecessor Involved In Banditry Crisis, Zamfara Gov Alleges by dododawa1: 1:22pm On Sep 19
The Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has alleged that his predecessor, Bello Matawalle, was fully involved in some banditry issues bedevelling the state.

Speaking on a TVC politics programme on Wednesday night, the governor alleged that with information at his disposal, his predecessor headed a government that was in bed with bandits.

Lawal also accused the last administration led by Bello, who is now the Minister of State for Defence, of siphoning the state funds and handling insecurity with kid’s gloves.

“Yes, there were a lot of issues in the past, with my predecessor. In fact, let me state this very categorically, if I were him (Matawalle), I would resign and face all the allegations against me and that would have been more honourable. Because from all the information we are getting, my predecessor (Matawalle) was fully involved in some of these banditry issues,” Lawal said.

Justifying his claim that his predecessor was involved in the banditry issues, he recounted how a permanent secretary during Matawalle’s administration paid ransom through the government house to free his children abducted by bandits.

The governor said, “Typical is the fact that there was a permanent secretary whose children were abducted and it was unfortunate he had to pay ransom through the Government House. It was also very clear based on all the allegations that bandits were being kept at the Government House. And there were so many other issues.”

He added that he was Matawalle, he would have resigned to clear his name from all allegations against him,so, for me honestly, if I were him, I would step aside and face these allegations until I clear my name before I come back to continue my job. How can you imagine these allegations against him and he’s still the minister of defence? I mean, that is unfair. This man could have been honourable, stepped aside and faced these allegations, cleared his name, and come back to continue his job,” Lawal said.
He added that his predecessor’s file was before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and that it was surprising that the same person was cleared by lawmakers and security outfits for the post of minister.

“In May 2023, there was this allegation of misappropriating over N70 billion and when we took over, we realised that N70 billion was child’s play compared to the rot on the ground and all this information was before the EFCC and I wondered how this guy was cleared by the security operatives before he’s confirmed as a minister. If I were him, I would still face the EFCC and say look, let me clear my name.

“This is a father to 41 children and for goodness sake, what kind of legacy is he going to leave for his children when you are being accused of misappropriating such amount of money? So, he should have come out clean, faced EFCC, and cleared his name.

“But we are still waiting to hear from the EFCC and the case has been going on for over a year now. Meanwhile, this is people’s money that we are talking about. We need this money in Zamfara with all the challenges we are facing, including financial constraints. At least, let’s have some of this money back to Zamfara so that we can work for the people of the state,” Lawal said.

When contacted for a reaction, Mattawalle’s Personal Assistant (Media), Ahmad Dan Wudil, said the minister would soon respond to the allegations by the governor.

“I will forward you our response today regarding that allegation. I will get back to you,” Wudil told our correspondent during a telephone conversation on Thursday.

Sports / Govt Officials, Agents, Academy Owners Hijack U-20 Screening by dododawa1: 11:28am On Sep 19
By Godwin Aikigbe

The ongoing Flying Eagles screening exercise meant to select players for the 2024 WAFU B U20 Championship, scheduled for October and November in Togo, has been hijacked by government officials, football agents, and football academy owners, The PUNCH reports.

According to some of the players undergoing the selection process at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja, who spoke to The PUNCH on the condition of anonymity for fear of being victimised, the exercise has been completely taken over by the infiltrators, leaving the Aliyu Zubairu-led technical crew confused.

“Some players are either sent herre by top government officials with lettesr or by football academy owners and agents, all looking for spots on the team. Some of them that were dropped were sent back to the coach by the government officials, who insist that they must be picked. The number of agents here is an indication of what is about to happen,” said one of the players.

”The coach is reportedly very confused and under immense pressure regarding whom to select, considering the government officials’ candidates, agents, academy owners, and so on,” he added.Another player decried the pitiable condition of their camp when it opened last Thursday.

“We were initially kept in a space infested with mosquitoes and bed bugs before being moved to the usual camp site, where the feeding is very poor,” he said.

The Flying Eagles took on Water FC in a friendly match at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja on Wednesday and will next face the Malantaki side, preparatory to the sub-regional tournament in Togo, which will determine the zone’s representative for the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations held January 1 to 19 in South Africa.

Health / Men Should Sleep Naked To Improve Sperm Quality, Say Physicians by dododawa1: 11:13am On Sep 19
Chijioke Iremeka

Medical experts have said that sleeping naked could increase sperm production in men by enabling the testicles to have a chance to cool off.

They recommend that men who wish to become fathers should sleep without clothing at night to enhance their chances of conception.

The physicians pointed out that this practice could improve male fertility, as cooling the scrotum at night had been shown to improve sperm quality.

The experts suggested wearing roomy boxers during the day to keep the scrotum cool and enhance reproductive success while advocating for sleeping naked at night.

According to the US National Library of Medicine’s Biotech Information, cooling the scrotum directly impacts sperm health and motility.

Additionally, the US medical journal confirms that sleeping naked helps maintain an optimal temperature for testicular health and sperm quality.

Speaking exclusively with PUNCH Healthwise in different interviews, the experts noted that tight underwear could cause heat, stressing that cooler temperatures support optimal testicular function, which could be achieved by sleeping naked.

A Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Olufemi Fasanmade, disclosed that sleeping naked positively impacts male fertility.

Fasanmade explained that cool weather and loose underwear help maintain optimal sperm production, and sleeping naked effectively cools the scrotum.

He noted that tight-fitting pants and hot weather could reduce sperm production, whereas loose garments or sleeping naked promote better sperm formation.

Fasanmade advised men looking to improve their fertility and sperm motility to keep their scrotum and testes cool by avoiding tight pants or boxers while sleeping.

Dr. Chidumeje Okafor

Corroborating his statement, a Family Physician at the Anambra State Ministry of Health, Dr. Chidumeje Okafor, highlighted several benefits of sleeping naked.

He categorised these benefits into four sectors for clarity: sleep, psychological, health, and obstetric and gynecological advantages.

Okafor stated, “Sleeping naked can boost male libido and improve fertility.”

He also noted that men who sleep naked had 25 percent less DNA fragmentation in their sperm.

Regarding women’s health, Okafor noted that sleeping naked can help protect against yeast infections such as candidiasis.

He acknowledged that while vaginal yeast infections are common and may not be entirely avoidable, their prevention is possible.

Okafor advised that avoiding tight pants and underwear, which can increase moisture in the genital area, is beneficial.

Sleeping naked or at least without underwear can help keep the vulva and vagina cool and dry, thereby reducing the risk of infection, he said.

The family physician noted that tight-fitting or sweaty underwear can increase the risk of vaginal yeast infections, especially if worn throughout the day and night.

“Sleeping naked is an effective way to air out the vagina and maintain its health, helping to prevent yeast infections that are more likely to develop in warm, moist environments,” he added.

More so, a study conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Maryland and Stanford University which monitored underwear choices of 500 men over 12 months to ascertain their sperm quality, also gave credence to the benefits of men sleeping naked.

It found that men who wore boxers during the day and were naked at night had 25 per cent less Deoxyribonucleic acid fragmentation in their sperm compared with men who wore tight briefs day and night.

According to ScienceDirect, a medical journal, DNA fragmentation refers to the process where DNA breaks down into smaller fragments, which can be detected in specific regions of the brain.

This fragmentation, it noted, is associated with the presence of free radicals and is believed to contribute to the development of conditions like epilepsy.

The journal also notes that elevated DNA fragmentation rates are more common in infertile men compared to fertile donors and can negatively impact reproductive outcomes.

These undesired effects, the journal noted, include impairment of natural conception, intrauterine insemination, and In-Vitro fertilisation with Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, a technique used during IVF.

The researchers noted among men in the general population attempting to conceive, the type of underwear worn during the day and at night is associated with semen quality.
