Abuja – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it has done everything to protect its card readers from being hacked or jammed on Election Day. Mr Chidi Nwafor, the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), INEC, stated this at a Situation Room Dialogue with INEC officials in on Wednesday in Abuja. The dialogue was organised by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, with support from the British Department for International Development (DFID). Nwafor said the meeting became necessary, following insinuations by some people that there were plans to jam or hack its server or card readers. “I want to assure you that we have done everything possible in terms of security issues; in terms of when it was being designed, we have considered a lot of things. “In any technology, we bring out issues as an engineer, but you must also know that this equipment you are bringing is for electoral process. “Therefore, for you to make a design, you must also look at full electoral process of voting. “Where are the ways this thing can be hacked? Where are the ways this equipment can be used in a negative ways? All these we have considered. Nwafor added that the commission’s Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and card readers would help to eliminate election frauds in the forthcoming general elections. He identified some of the election fraud in the country to include buying of votes, voter impersonation, ballot stuffing, mis-recording of vote and multiple voting. “Multiple voting should be a thing of the past and the card reader would ensure one man: one vote,’’ he said. He, however, added that curbing election fraud was not just the duty of INEC but all stakeholders. Also speaking, INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, expressed the commission’s confidence in its card readers, adding that it had procured adequate functional card readers needed for the conduct of the elections. Jega said that the commission had taken adequate measures to ensure that the card readers do not fail, stating that in the mock test conducted, no card reader failed. “We have about 150,000 voting points, because we broke some of the large polling units into voting points. “We have procured 182,000 card readers, of all of these, we have only about 400 that were `dead on arrival’ – factory faults. “They have been brought and they cannot boot, so we are comfortable about the integrity of the card readers itself and all the public demonstrations and test we have done, no card reader has failed. “In addition we already have extra battery in case there is a problem with the charge of batteries or lack of functionality of the battery.“ Jega added that because the country would be holding three elections in one day, it had to adopt measures to ensure that the ballot papers were properly placed in correct ballot boxes. “Because we are doing three elections on March 28 and then two set on April 11, we are using three ballot boxes and three and two ballot boxes for March 28 and April 11 respectively. “We have done colour coding just to make it easier to avoid mistake in placing the ballot papers in the appropriate ballot boxes,’’ he added. He said the commission had agreed to open each of the ballot boxes and sort out wrongly placed ballot papers after election in the presence of all agents and observers before counting. According to him, the commission would continue with its sensitisation programme on the need for people to place their cast votes in the appropriate boxes. (NAN) |

She Was Called The World’s Ugliest Woman, Now She’s An Inspiration. Lizzie Velasquez, star of 'A Brave Heart,' gives her top tips for being confident. As it turns out, the oldest advice in the book is also the most effective. “You have to be fully aware and confident that you are enough just being you,” Velasquez said. “That’s enough! You don’t have to live up to anyone else’s standards, you don’t have to look like anyone else, you don’t have to compare yourself to anyone else. You being you is enough, and you putting your positivity and good vibes out into the world, once you get to that point absolutely everything will fall into place. Whether it’s your personal life, your work life, your school life, your confidence, everything will fit once you believe in yourself.” Roll with the punches. “It’s been my style for so long to just roll with the punches and whenever something comes up you get, really, to just tackle it and enjoy it,” she said. “I actually made up my TED Talk as I was going. I had it planned for three weeks, and as I was walking up onstage I looked at [the TED organizers]. I was like, ‘listen, don’t freak out. I just need you to trust me, but I’m changing everything we planned.’ She looked at me with big eyes and took a deep breath and said, ‘I trust you.’ So I walked up and told myself to pretend you’re talking to your best friend.” Velasquez’s TED Talk has millions of views. Love yourself. “A few years ago I did this thing that I now call the Love Yourself List, where I wrote down everything that I love about myself, whether it’s physically or my personality,” she said. “I posted the list on my bathroom mirror to where I would see it every single day and I read it until I believed it instead of just looking at the words. And every time I would compare myself or doubt myself, I would think of the list and think, ‘these are the things I do love about myself. And over time, the list worked and I believed it.” Fake it until you make it. As a junior in high school, Velasquez’s principal asked her to speak to 400 9th graders about her experience. After she gave the talk, however, she caught the bug and wanted to become a motivational speaker. “I went home and googled ‘how to be a motivational speaker’ and made a website and jailed people and said if you need a speaker, I’m your girl. I didn’t tell that that I’d only done one speech ever and didn’t know anything. I just wasn’t going to go wait around for it. I taught myself…I’m not going to wait until someone asks me to go, I’m going to go, ‘here I am!’” It’s OK to have bad days. You SHOULD have bad days. “I make it a point to let myself have bad days on a regular basis,” Velasquez said. “There were many times when I wouldn’t get it out of my system. I wouldn’t let myself cry and wouldn’t sit in a quiet room and just reflect or take my dog for a walk and leave my phone inside. I wouldn’t do all of those things and over time you just build up and at a certain point it builds up and explodes, probably at the worst time possible. I make it a point to let myself be sad today and say ‘why me’ and cry and complain and leave my blinds closed, but tomorrow, it’s done. Tomorrow, I’m not going to feel sorry for myself, I’m opening my blinds, I’m getting out of bed, and I’m letting myself be happy. It’s worked! And now I can’t picture myself not doing those things because it’s what keeps me sane.”

A few weeks ago the twitter feud between Wizkid and Skales was all the internet was buzzing about as the two artists and former labelmates said more than a few candid words about each other. In an interview with Vanguard Newspaper however, Skales has explained that he simply wants to move past that episode and have people focus on his music. He said: We never really fell out; the relationship we had has always been about music. It’s not like we are brothers. We are not from the same family. Like I said, it was just business and music. So we were cool, and even till now we are still cool. I have no bad blood against him. I just want to face my music right now. I’m about to drop my album and that’s all that matters to me right now. The truth is, we were not really together. We were just at the same venue at the same event that’s all. And really, whatever needs to be said now has already been said on Twitter, so you can pick everything there. Right now, I’ve put the whole episode behind me. I just want people to focus more on my music. In life life human beings must always fallout. |
Israel: Exit polls show near dead heat UPDATED:Mar 17, 2015 21:28 GMT Preliminary exit poll estimates released by Israel's three major broadcasters late Tuesday show an election too close to call. Channel 2 Israel reports the Likud party, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has a slight lead over the Zionist Union, led by Isaac Herzog -- 28 seats, over 27 seats. Channels 10 and 1 show the two tied with 27 seats each. The incumbent said his camp prevailed. "Against all odds: a great victory for the Likud. A major victory for the people of Israel!" Netanyahu tweeted soon after the estimates were released. The Zionist Union responded quickly, saying in a statement that the Likud party "keeps misleading." "The rightist bloc has shrunk. Everything is possible until the real results are in, when we can know which parties passed the electoral threshold and which government we can form. All the spins and statements are premature. A negotiating team has been formed in an effort to form a government led by Herzog," it read. Millions of Israelis cast their votes to determine their country's next Prime Minister and the makeup of its parliament. Ballots are for political parties rather than individual candidates. Israel has a proportional representation system, meaning a coalition government is likely to be formed within its 120-seat Knesset. CNN's Elise Labott described the early results as a stunning turnaround for Netanyahu, who took a sharp turn toward the right during the final days of the hotly-contested campaign. "It seems to have worked. He seems to have energized that right-wing base and now he is neck-and-neck with Isaac Herzog, even inching a little bit ahead of him," |
