International observers call for cancellation of Rivers result

International election observers on Sunday called for the cancellation of the Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers.

The leader of African Centre for Leadership Strategies and Development, Mr Humphrey Bekaren, who spoke on behalf of the observers, made the call in Port Harcourt.

He said the observers were shocked that INEC disregarded the widely reported violent irregularities to begin the process of declaring results in the state.

“We request all lovers of democracy to join us in calling for the outright cancellation of the phony election.

“Unless this is done, we would have sown the seed that could eventually grow into providing a shade of fear and death over us,” he said.

According to Bekaren, what happened in Rivers was a far cry from what election should be.

“What we saw did not meet international standard of electioneering, not even the ones set by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC,’’ he said.

He said there were reported incidents like deliberate delays and diversion of electoral materials, attacks on electoral officers, widespread arson and voter intimidation.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Rivers, Mrs Gesila Khan, said INEC cancelled election in centres with reported electoral malpractices.

She said re-run elections took place in six local government areas in the state where electoral malpractices were reported.

Returning Officer, Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Isaac Adewole who is the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan declared Ambode winner of the election after meeting up with the provisions in the electoral law.

Politics › Bauchi Warns Under-age Voters To Keep Off by domopps(op): 7:58pm On Apr 10, 2015
The Bauchi State Government on Friday called on parents and guardians to caution their under-age children and wards to steer clear of polling units during elections on Saturday.

The call was conveyed in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Ishola Adeyemi, in Bauchi.

The government, in the statement, also appealed to politicians to call their supporters to order so that the elections would be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the laid down rules and regulations.

It said the government would not hesitate to deal with anyone or group of people who would want to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections.

According to the statement, the call is part of efforts to ensure a peaceful conduct of the April 11 governorship and state House of Assembly elections in the state.

“As a responsible government, we will not condone any act of hooliganism from any quarter, to ensure that the peace being enjoyed in the state is not compromised.

“As such, anyone who has no business at polling units should steer clear of the area, before, during and after the elections,” the statement added.

The state government warned that it would not hesitate to deal with anyone or group of people who may want to disrupt the electoral process in the state.

It stated that security agents had been put on alert to arrest anyone caught inciting miscreants to cause violence, no matter how highly placed they are.

It, however, called on security agents to treat people with caution to avoid eruption of violence.

It further called on voters to conduct themselves peacefully, before, during and after the elections, so that peace will continue to reign in the state.

Another Defection! PDP State of Assembly Member joins APC

A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) House of Assembly candidate in Yobe, Alhaji Zanna Danani, on Friday dropped his election bid and defected to the APC.

NAN reports that the defection was coming less than 24 hours to the governorship and state assembly elections.

Zanna, who defected along with several other chieftains of PDP to APC, told newsmen in Damaturu that the action was to enable them join the mainstream of the political development of the country.

Alhaji Lawan-Gana Lantewa, who spoke on behalf of those who defected, said “we are joining APC to ensure that our people, who suffered insurgency, are adequately catered for under the APC administration”.

He said they would work for the success of APC in the governorship and state assembly elections.

Lantewa said they would provide block votes for the success of APC to defeat PDP candidates in the election.
