We have had the opportunity to watch video clips of the Philip Shaibu led PDP campaign stops in Okpekpe Etsako East LGA, Apana and Iyuku in Etsako West LGA which took place yesterday November 20, 2022. The poor attendance they recorded at all the venues is another clear indication that Edo North remains solidly APC and no lies or antics of the failed Obaseki/Shaibu government in Edo State will save PDP candidates from being defeated in the 2023 elections. Sadly, Philip Shaibu perhaps angered and frustrated by the poor reception that met them everwhere, once again exposed himself as a demented ingrate whose only talent is how to use his tongue to lap up his own vomit whenever and wherever a microphone is handed over to him. It is a disgrace that even after over 6 years in office as deputy governor of Edo State, he is still unable to imbibe a culture of decency in speech, demeanour and actions that is expected of his office. This explains why he threw away decorum and decided to use a courtesy visit to the palace of HRH Peter Osigbemeh, the Onwueweko of Okpekpe to continue his unprovoked, unwarranted verbal diarrhea directed at the person of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who without doubt is a hero in the entire North Ibie Kingdom. It is instructive that according to reports, the Onwueweko, in his wisdom admonished Philip Shaibu and informed him that as a traditional ruler, he does not belong to any political party and therefore can not take sides in any disagreement between politicians. Since Philip has no shame in lying about what everyone knows the truth, we are surprised he did not continue his liturgy of falsehoods by telling Okpekpe people that he was the one who constructed the Afowa-Iyora-Apana-Okpekpe Road. Better still he could have upgraded his tales by moonlight with another lie that he is the one who initiated and approved the Edo State sponsorship of the IAAF 10 KM Okpekpe Road Race that has become the biggest annual tourist event in Edo State today. We are certain he couldn't dare do that because he knows very well that all sons and daughters of North Ibie Kingdon, old or young, home and abroad revere Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for opening their communities to the world through the construction of the roads and sponsorship of the race. They would have stoned him right there if he attempted to float such lies that directly concerns them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Shaibu is maniacally obsessed with Oshiomhole and he seriously needs medical attention for this condition which has degenerated to mental illness. Some say that his state of mind is not unconnected with the fact that when he grew up and discovered the doubts about his parenthood, it was Oshiomhole that took him in and gave him the chance of a useful life that he enjoys today. That explains why he imitates to the minutest detail, everything Adams Oshiomhole does. It is common knowledge that Philip Shaibu cannot but dress to look like Oshiomhole, dances like Oshiomhole, eats what he knows Oshiomhole eats and drinks what Oshiomhole drinks. He has even attempted to mimic Oshiomhole in speech, but his poor command of English language usage and total lack of oratory abilities made him back off from further attempts. Without a touch of Oshiomhole, Philip Shaibu is inadequate and pathetic in his own estimation of himself. So, to some extent, his present utterances while unfortunate, do not surprise those who know him well because, they actually represent the frustration, emptiness and hopelessness that has engulfed him since he unwittingly tied himself to the apron string of his heartless, consciencless and unscrupulous master "Satan The Devil" The same man who he physically attacked in Government House Benin City a few years ago, because he couldn't stomach his suspicion that Godwin Obaseki was getting closer to Oshiomhole than himself. These are facts in the public domain. We call on Mr. Philip Shaibu to answer the question posed to him since March 12 this year by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who publicly challenged him to tell the world who his father is. This question which is yet to be answered by Shaibu indicate that he really does not know the answer to it. So while the people of Edo State and the world await his answer, he should better utilise the opportunity of traversing the length and breadth of Etsako land to seek information on his true ancestry, instead of shielding his questionable parenthood under the guise of Oshiomhole being his father. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has since disowned Shaibu and asked him to go look for his real father. We all know Oshiomhole's children and he's no longer willing to accommodate a bastard among them. Anyone who has listened to Philip Shaibu speak in the past two years cannot miss the fact that his life is empty without Oshiomhole. He has nothing to offer other than his illogical blabbering about Oshiomhole. Nobody needs to be told that Shaibu rode on the shoulders of Oshiomhole into the Edo House of Assembly in 2007. Before then he was unemployed and survived on handouts he received as an errand boy and briefcase carrier behind Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. We know that Philip Shaibu's debilitated brain cannot comprehend the fact that nobody except himself is interested in his explanations of what happened between him and Oshiomhole. This is campaign season and issues should drive the narrative. That is what will determine who Edo people vote for. Edo North people know Oshiomhole and his records speak for him. Philip Shaibu should let his own records speak for him too. If he thinks that Edo North people are as dumb as he is to believe that it was he not Oshiomhole that sited the Edo State University in Iyamho, then let it be so. At the right time, Jattu people will ask him of what use was the Edo State deputy governorship position freely bestowed upon him by Oshiomhole was, if there is no enduring legacy to show for it. Whereas officials of responsible governments across the country are using the campaign season to commission projects that they executed to highlight their stewardship, it is shameful and a matter for deep reflection that Philip Shaibu was in Apana to commission a classrooms block and Principal's office built and donated to the school by the Ezuduemoh's family. Incidentally , that school established in 1979 has only two government employed teachers. All other staff are paid through community efforts. This is a clear example of how Edo State has been brought to its knees by the duo of Godwin Obaseki and Philip Shaibu. Finally we advice Philip Shaibu to leave Oshiomhole alone and if he can understand the deep meaning therein, take counsel from the words of the Roman Lyrical Poet Horace who wrote that "Virtue, dear friend, needs no defense. The surest guard is innocence: None knew, till guilt created fear what darts or poisoned arrows were" Edo North APC Presidential/Senatorial Campaign Council.

*My advice to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Reno Omokri, the lying pastor, sexist commentator, merchant of falsehood, shameless plagiarist and defender of looters* "Sir, Life experiences has taught me that when you are climbing the ladder to the top, you should not be distracted or attempt to throw back stones thrown at you by your detractors, enemies and evil spirited messengers of darkness, who have nothing to lose. Afterall they are already below you. So just collect the stones, balance yourself on the ladder and continue your journey. One day when you reach the top and comfortably seated, you can begin to throw back those stones and hit them right at the centre of their heads. Then they can only wail in anguish but cannot harm you anymore @VOshioke |
THE FALLACY OF A NON EXISTENT FORTEADAMS LUXURY AIRLINE. In the last couple of days, we have been inundated with reports of a story trending on social media networks titled “NEW AIRLINE LAUNCHED IN CAPE VERDE BY A NIGERIAN GOVERNOR” Our initial response was to ignore the story knowing it to be a false narrative that was first circulated sometime in January 2016, when Comrade Adams Oshiomhole was still governor of Edo State. However, it has become imperative to make these clarifications, because the worthless "bad belle" originators of this malicious story have been emboldened by our silence to further develop their falsehood, reintroduce it into the public space and broadcast it, to a point where some people of worth are concerned that there is tendency for a segment of the public to be taken in by this deliberately orchestrated act of falsehood, mischief and blackmail. It is on the basis of these expressed concerns that we make the following clarifications. 1) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole does not own a luxury airline; neither does he hold any investments in an airline here in Nigeria, Cape Verde or anywhere else in the world. 2) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole does not own nor have stakes in any business concern named ForteAdams, here in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world. 3) Our investigations have revealed that there are only two airlines currently registered and operating from Cape Verde. They are Cabo Verde Express with callsign KABEX and TACV with callsign CABOVERDE. Available records also show that there is only one listed defunct airline from Cape Verde named Halcyonair with callsign CREOLE. So there is no airline named ForteAdams operating or defunct in Cape Verde. Anyone interested in verifying these claims should Google “Airlines in Cape Verde” and the results will be displayed. 4) Beyond the malicious coinage for the purpose of perpetuating this falsehood, there is no evidence to show that the name ForteAdams exists anywhere in the world as a brand name or a registered business name. The airline business today is an online business. No airline can exist without an online booking site, so if ForteAdams airline has no online booking site, and no web page, how does it do business? 5) ForteAdams Luxury Airlines exists only in the treacherous imagination of those who initiated the false story, and therefore has nothing to do with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. Not long ago, these same persons circulated images of a sprawling estate which they claimed was Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s country home in Iyamoh, Edo State. A Google search later revealed that the property was actually located in Los Angeles USA and belonged to famous rapper Dr. Dre. 6) Is it not ironic that the same people who just recently were spreading false rumors that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s wife, Iara had filed for divorce are the same people concocting rumors that he launched an airline worth $920million to honor this same wife in Cape Verde? One is constrained to ask how much in US dollars the total 8 years budget of Edo State was, that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will execute the projects which are generally acknowledged, then still magically from somewhere raise almost a billion dollars to launch an airline. 7) In their desperation to justify their falsehood, these con artists downloaded from the internet the image of an aircraft belonging to Surya Airlines of Nepal and Photoshop it with the inscription “ForteAdams Luxury Flights” but like all criminals that get caught in their act, they forgot to change the logo of Surya Airlines on the tail of the aircraft. Once again we call on anyone interested in verifying this claim to simply Google search Surya Airline, compare the image of their aircraft with the image of the aircraft that was purported to belong to ForteAdams Luxury Flight. It has become obvious that there are people, mostly once powerful PDP godfathers from Edo State humiliated into retirement by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and a few disgruntled elements within APC, that are spending money to sponsor media attacks and spread false rumors against Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. Their grouse is that even after leaving office as governor of Edo State, his profile has continued to rise. They are particularly angered that the Oba of Benin Ewuare II and President Muhammadu Buhari have come out openly to acknowledge the tremendous infrastructural development that Edo State witnessed under the stewardship of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The latest upsurge in these attacks is not unconnected with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s recent private audience with Mr. President in Aso Rock Presidential Villa. They are nervous that in spite of their evil wishes, Comrade Oshiomhole still enjoys a harmonious and affable relationship with the President.9) Finally we call on the general public to be wary of the online activities of these paid “cyber assassins” who use the anonymity of the internet to spread falsehoods with an intent to impugn the integrity of our leaders, hoping to achieve their diabolic political objectives. All people of goodwill, especially Edo people who are living witnesses of Comrade Oshiomhole’s legacy of service should join hands to further frustrate their ill machinations by exposing these falsehoods. We therefore implore everyone reading this statement to please spread it by sharing on all sites, forums and social media platforms where fake rumors on Comrade Adams Oshiomhole have previously appeared. On his part, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is resolute that he will not be deterred by these enemies of progress, but will continue to stand up against entrenched oppressors and use every position he finds himself to deploy resources for the benefits of the Nigerian common man. Signed Victor Oshioke Personal Assistant Office of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole Abuja Nigeria, February 11, 2018. |
Oshiomhole commiserates with Tinubu on son's death Former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has expressed deep shock at the unfortunate death of Jide Tinubu, eldest son of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. In a personally signed condolence letter addressed to the APC national leader, Comrade Oshiomhole wrote, “It is with deep shock that I received a few minutes ago, news of the unfortunate death of your beloved son Jide. I have personally experienced you as a very empathic leader, always available to sympathize and share in the grief of all who encounter misfortune. It is therefore so sad that your family has to go through the pains of losing a cherished son at the prime of his life. As mortals it is particularly difficult to come to grips with the reality of losing such a vibrant young man, who was so full of life and with so much more inherent in him to give back to society, but God knows best because it is only He that decides when we come into this world and when we leave. On behalf of my family, I offer our sincere condolences at this most challenging time, while praying that Jide finds eternal rest in heaven. Also, I pray that God in His abounding mercy send forth His healing grace upon the wife and children he left behind. May they be consoled by the reality of the exemplary life he lived. Once again my leader, be assured that we share with you and your family the grief of this very difficult moment.”

Please call her in again and explain to her quietly that she infected you. Encourage her to go for treatment and if possible pay for the treatment. The ease with which she offered you free sex after such a short time coupled witg the fact that she has tgis disease means she may be offering it to other men too. If you don't inform her immediately that she has STD, another of her sex partners may inform her before you and she may assume that you infected her. |
From Tuesday October 17 to Friday October 20, 2017 "We Care Trust" visited a total of 10 orphanage homes in Benin City and donated 5 bags of 50kg rice to each of the homes. It is instructive to know that "We Care Trust" was founded by Mrs Iara Adams Oshiomhole when she was the First Lady of Edo State. However she has continued to impact on the lives of the underprivileged in our society, even without the privilege of her public role as First Lady of Edo State. About three months ago, she visited the IDP Camp near Benin City in company of her husband Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, where they donated assorted food items, essential commodities and cash to the inhabitants of the camp. Two months ago she also paid surprise visits to five orphanage homes in Benin City, not only to observe the condition of the children, but to equally donate much needed cash and provisions for their welfare. Her genuine concerns for children who for no fault of theirs live in environments where their survival is dependent on the charity of kind hearted individuals and groups is worthy of acknowledgment, commendation and emulation. We pray that God will increase His blessings upon Mrs Iara Adams Oshiomhole and her entire household so that she will never lack the means to continue her good works.

PRESS STATEMENT. ON PRESIDENT BUHARI’S REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE FROM WORLD BANK. It is a matter of fact that I was present at the meeting President Muhammadu Buhari had with the World Bank Group President Dr. Jim Yong Kim on July 21, 2015 at the Blair House, Washington DC. It is rather unfortunate that a patriotic request made by Mr. President and borne out of altruistic motivation is now being twisted, manipulated and politicized to suit certain political end. Mr. President made the request against the backdrop of the devastation of the North East zone and the need for international organizations to rise in support of the efforts of the Nigeria government in arresting the humanitarian crisis in that part of the country. The inhuman conditions of the Internally Displaced Persons were also discussed and Mr. President urged the World Bank to look into the best possible ways to address the crisis before it got out of hand. In Edo state at that period, the government I headed was also buffeted with the challenge of dealing with internally displaced persons who came to settle in the outskirts of Benin City without the knowledge of the state government. It took my personal intervention and the cooperation of Mr. President before we could offer our logistic assistance to make their location habitable to avert any humanitarian crisis. For those who are familiar with the devastation of the North East where over 20,000 persons have reportedly been killed with over 2 million internally displaced persons, it smacks of political notoriety for any rational mind to question the request of Mr. President. The idea of trying to read sectional meaning or ulterior motives to this genuine and patriotic request is grossly unfair, unfortunate and condemnable. It is instructive for us to know when to play politics and when not to play politics especially with serious developmental challenges such as the one under reference. One of the responsibilities of credible leadership is to know when and how to prioritize challenges of governance; and the humanitarian crisis in the North East was becoming an international embarrassment hence the request. President Buhari remains a statesman who is not only patriotic and altruistic in his intentions, but one whose actions speak volumes for our unity of purpose. We should see the country as one indivisible entity driven by common objectives and goals. Signed: COMRADE ADAMS ALIYU OSHIOMHOLE, mni, CON

Oshiomhole consoles Chief Bisi Akande Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has expressed sadness at the death of Madam Omowunmi Akande, wife of former APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande. In a statement signed by his media aide Mr. Victor Oshioke, the immediate past governor of Edo State and APC chieftain said, “I am deeply saddened by the death of Madam Omowunmi Akande. As mortals we are pained that mama is no more with us in her physical body, nonetheless we are consoled that she lived an exemplary life and her good deeds remain with us. Mama in her lifetime gained much adoration for holding the home front steadfast while her husband and our venerated leader, Chief Bisi Akande fought for the entrenchment of democracy in our great country. In this regard, her sacrifices are no less important than that of those who were at the frontlines for the actualization of our present political dispensation. “ ”I know how difficult it is for our leader, her husband, to bear the loss of such a jewel who has been a loyal wife, dependable companion and trusted adviser for over 5 decades, but I am relieved knowing that God blessed their union with wonderful children who are quite resourceful, cultured and well groomed to give our leader the necessary support he deserves. “ On behalf of my family, I extend our most sincere condolences to Chief Bisi Akande, the children and the entire extended family of our departed mother. May God forgive her sins and grant her eternal rest in paradise” the statement concluded. |
OSHIOMHOLE MOURNS MAITAMA SULE The immediate past governor of Edo State Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has expressed deep sadness at the death of seasoned civil servant, diplomat, suave orator and elder statesman, Alh. Yusuf Maitama Sule, the Dan masanin Kano who passed on at the age of 88 years on Monday in a Cairo hospital. In a press statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Victor Oshioke, Comrade Oshiomhole said “I am indeed saddened that Nigeria has lost such a rare gem at this trying moment of our nationhood.” He went on to say, “Mataima Sule was a peace loving, forthright and highly cerebral orator, who was unabashedly committed to the sustenance of Nigeria as one united entity. He recognized the diversity of this nation but more importantly he appreciated the complementary endowments which each federating region possessed that enhanced our national greatness.” “He was an independent thinker who was comfortable espousing his views without the constraints of religion or ethnic dichotomies.” “His wealth of knowledge and experience was so vast that he became a recurrent player for decades in the nation’s political space, always willing and ready to offer selfless services. At the right moment, he knew precisely it was time to quit partisan politics and dedicate his life to offering advice to successive governments, which justifiably earned him the title of an elder statesman. There is no doubt in my mind that his name has been etched in gold and engraved in the historical epitaph of Nigeria as one indivisible nation.” He went further to say that “On the international scene he earned our country great respect by championing the cause of freedom for blacks in South Africa as chairman of the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid. His eloquent speeches will continue to inspire generations of Africans, strengthening the database of our struggles and victories as a continent.” “I extend my very deep condolences to his family, the Governor, Emirate council and the good people of Kano state for this colossal loss. I pray that God grant his gentle soul a perfect rest in Aljanat.” The statement concluded.

PRESS STATEMENT OSHIOMHOLE DISOWNS STATEMENT ON GENERAL BABANGIDA. Our attention has been drawn to a news item trending on social media platforms and other conventional media suggesting that at a forum last week, Adams Oshiomhole called on former military President of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida to apologize to Nigerians for helping to bring the country to its present level, instead of asking for restructuring. It is important to make the following clarifications to avoid misconceptions that have trailed the news. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is currently out of the country attending to some important personal issues. It is on the basis of his unavoidable absence that he delegated a longtime friend and ally in the struggle, Comrade Issa Aremu , General Secretary of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers, to represent him as Guest Speaker at the 5th Triennial Delegate Conference of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PEGASSAN) in Abuja. Comrade Oshiomhole was invited to speak on the theme, "Emerging Trends in the Oil and Gas Industry and its Impact on Labour Movement in Nigeria". In order to guide and properly articulate his position on the theme, Comrade Oshiomhole had a telephone conversation with Comrade Issa Aremu where he gave the latter his perspectives on oil and gas. He did explain to Comrade Issa Aremu that the oil and gas sector needs diversification and deregulation to make the right investment that will lead to additional job creation and employment for Nigerians. Since it was essentially a union affair, discussions were to focus on how best to create an atmosphere that will stimulate further enterprise in the oil and gas sector in the overall interest of the Nigerian worker. It is true that there was no prepared speech handed over to Comrade Issa Aremu but the conversation Adams Oshiomhole had with him spelt out the scope of the issues to be discussed. There was nowhere during the conversation that the name of former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida featured with respect to his comments on restructuring or otherwise. We were surprised therefore to read news report credited to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole asking “IBB to apologize to Nigerians instead of asking for restructuring”. We wish to state unequivocally that the view so expressed is entirely that of Comrade Issa Aremu and does not in any way represent the views of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. When a speaker is representing another speaker in any public speaking engagement, the rules are very clear. If the representing speaker wants to deviate from the mandate and brief given to him, he will clearly inform the audience without lumping his thoughts and views as though they represent those of the real speaker. Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s opinion of former Military President General Ibrahim Babangida was eloquently captured in a personally signed paid advertorial to mark IBB’s 75th birthday on the 17th August, 2016 in several newspapers. His respect for him has neither wavered nor faltered; hence he was quite surprised that such a statement was wrongly credited to him. According to Comrade Oshiomhole, this is a time for sober reflections when the country needs the voices of all elder statesmen and leaders of thoughts; especially former presidents to speak out in our collective effort and commitment to take the country to greater heights. Though a trying period, the country will come out stronger and more united. Signed: Victor Oshioke, Personal Assistant/Media Aide, Office of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the Edo University, Iyamho as the 41st State University and 142nd University in Nigeria. Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof Julius Okojie in a letter to Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole dated 23rd March, 2016 said: “Consequent upon the formal presentation of the relevant gazetted law, Academic Brief and Physical Master Plan and satisfactory report from the Advisoryaresource assessment visit, I write on behalf of the National Universities Commission (NUC), to inform His Excellency, that with effect from Wednesday, 23rd March, 2016, Edo University, Iyamho, has been recognised as the 41st State University and 142nd University, in the Nigerian University System. Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has been conferred with an honorary doctorate degree in Public Administration by the Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State. At a special convocation held on Saturday, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Benard Eronmonsele Aigbokhan extolled the humanitarian qualities of Governor Oshiomhole, which he said stood him out for the honorary degree. He said the Governor gave his full support and did everything possible to ensure the smooth take-off of the University which has now graduated its first set of students. Also, Chairman, Board of Trustees, of the University, Dr Ebenezer Olusola Okebukola, noted the “unquantifiable contributions of His Excellency , Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, who used his position as Governor, and within his constitutional power to contribute to the development of Samuel Adegboyega University”, saying the award is the University’s recognition of the Governor’s meritorious service to his fatherland, Nigeria in general and Edo State in particular and his love for educational advancement in all ramifications.” In his remarks, Governor Oshiomhole expressed gratitude to the authorities of the university for the honour done to him. He said, “I want to lay on record my gratitude to the authority of Samuel Adegboyega University for the honor bestowed on me this afternoon. I appreciate this honor for several reasons. I believe that it is coming genuinely from your heart based on your evaluation of my stewardship in this community, this state and in our country. I want to thank you, may God honor you the way you have honored me today. “But let me congratulate you even more importantly for what you have accomplished with this university. “I think you pose a challenge to other churches to look at rural areas where the forgotten majority reside and carry development right to their doorsteps. Such actions, more than volumes of sermons are more potent in encouraging our people to remain in their communities because they don’t have to move in order to have what modern life offers. I believe without asking you, that you have created already, so many direct jobs, not only for the people of Ogwa or Edo State, but many people across the length and breadth of Nigeria. I salute your courage.” According to him, “I believe that government alone cannot deliver or provide all the universities that Nigerians desire. Everywhere around the world, the private sector play a major role in building universities and faith based organizations are well reputed in managing universities. “I like to join you sir in your appeal to the federal government to extend federal support through TETFUND to Samuel Adegboyega University. I like appeal to federal government to support universities that are owned by faith-based organizations. There is a difference between a university owned by the church, a church that is driven not by profit motive but with common good of humanity. There is a whole lot of difference. Looking at what I have seen here today, compared to what I saw the first time, it shows that every revenue that has accrued to this institution has been re-injected into developing the institution. Whereas, if it is a private outfit, some of those revenue we be classified as profit and would belong solely to the proprietor of the university. “I think what the federal government needs to do is to make a distinction between university owned by nonprofit organization and those that are owned by individuals.” He continued, “I am convinced that our investment in education is the best way to secure the future. We cannot succeed or compete or even survive in a world that is knowledge driven, knowledge based, in other word, a digital world, to survive in this environment will be based on what you know and not who you know. There are still few Nigerians who believe the way to success need not be a function of what you know and they can point at few people who seem to have made it without much skill and without formal education. Those are exemptions and they belong to the past. The future belongs to those who have knowledge to navigate the rigors of the very challenging and increasingly competitive world. “This is why Edo State Government has continued to pay the right emphasis on education. In Edo state, we not only provide free primary education, free junior secondary education, we have since extended free education to senior secondary school. So what is worth celebrating, mind you, is not the fact that the schools are free but the quality of schools and the quality of teachers that makes the difference. In a typical rural Edo today, I am proud to say that you would easily find that the most attractive building in a typical hamlet is Edo community is a public primary or secondary school. “For me, that is the foundation because, if we have an educational system that does not provide opportunity for children of the poor to go to school, school that are sufficiently appealing to young minds. to be taught by teachers that are well paid, Samuel Adegboyega University will not have the students to admit because the primary school is the foundation without which you cannot have the tertiary students.” The Governor further said, “Let me also say that we need to start a national conversation on how to reposition education in our state and by extension, in our country. There is too much hypocrisy in our system and everybody pretends that we are not crisis. The Nigeria educational system is in serious crisis and we can’t afford to postpone the conversation any longer. Last month, we were told that Nigeria spends over a million dollar every year to pay school fees for Nigerian students who are studying abroad. “Those numbers if they were shared and distributed between federal, state and even private owned universities, in Nigeria, the quality of our universities would have improved substantially. Today, we are faced with a situation in which lecturers, professors, ministers, governors and anybody that can afford it send their own children to universities abroad which means they themselves don’t have confidence in their own universities. Those who cannot afford to take them to US or Uk send them to Ghana or Benin republic and they pay at least, 10,000 dollars. “We are exporting all these money to rich countries. Everybody is seeking what I call, a privatized solution to a problem that requires a national approach. The problem is that the political elite keeps pretending that we can offer what we are not in a position to offer. Nigeria government cannot guarantee free university education. It is beyond the government. It is time for us to have a conversation on a realistic fee payable by those who can afford it and for those who cannot afford it, the state have a duty to support gifted children whose parents cannot afford to support their university education.” He noted, “I have difficulty in understanding why we refused to address a situation in which a Nigerian child attends a private prestigious secondary school where he is paying 500, 000 naira a year and some are even paying 1 million naira a year. But the parents are not rich enough to take him to Ghana or to US or Europe and he ends up in a Nigerian government university. That same guy who was paying 500,000, 300,000 naira a year for secondary education now has to go and pay 120,000 naira for a university education. It means something is not adding up and I just want to put this on the table.” Highpoint of the ceremony was the investiture of Governor Adams Oshiomhole with the donning of the academic regalia along with the presentation of certificate of the Doctorate Degree in Public Administration (honoris causa) by Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Nigerian children special, says Iara Oshiomhole *Launches pet project, raises N137m Mrs. Iara Oshiomhole, wife of Edo State Governor has described Nigerian children as special, saying the children are always happy and full of joy, no matter the circumstance. She gave her assessment at the launch of her pet project christened “We Care Trust” with a mission to care for underprivileged Nigerian children. Mrs. Oshiomhole who said she is very passionate about the needs of children said: “when I came to Benin, I saw little children full of love, joy, clapping their hands, dancing and singing, welcoming me. I remember coming here, feeling overwhelmed with their love, the joy that these kids showed me. I remember these little children that live in some not too beautiful condition. I feel the joy, I love them. “I remember that people that were with me couldn’t keep their eyes from tears. Everybody was shedding tears. Meanwhile, these children were welcoming us as strangers into their homes, and some of them even into their rooms with all their hearts, full of love and joy. This is what I cannot forget. “We have to be honest. There is something special about our Nigerian children. These children are naturally happy, and I cannot deny it. So, what we always hear is love, love, love. Love is something that grows. If you keep love, if you choose love, love will continue to choose you. So, my friends, let’s come together and let’s choose love. And we cannot do it alone, we have to do this together. “We have to start giving this love back, we have to try to get these children a better life. We have to do that together. “So, I am asking all my friends, family members, please, help me in this. Thank you very much for listening and God bless you.” Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Governor Oshiomhole said the project is purely the initiative of his wife. According to him, she paid a visit to some orphanages, and found that “there are a number of children who are being cared for and the terrible condition that prevail in many of the orphanages, and the fact that they don’t have access to regular income to ensure the welfare of those kids, and she felt that she should organize something on a sustainable basis that she can sustain even long after we have left government, to refocus public attention to those orphanages. “But what most people do once in a year, maybe during your birthday or something, people go to the orphanages. But the need of the kids is every day. Then, she felt there has to be a more systematic way to provide support. “It is purely her own initiative, it is purely her drive. As you can see for the first time, I had no remarks, because it is not my day. But I am happy that she thought about it.” Over N137 million was raised from pledges and cash donations from donors which included Alhjai Aliko Dangote, who was represented on the occasion.

Olubadan was father to all —Oshiomhole Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has described the death of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana as a great loss to the people of Ibadan, Oyo State and the nation, saying he was a father to all. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Peter Okhiria, Governor Oshiomhole described the Olubadan as “a unifier and a unique royal father whose reign brought a lot of stability and development to Ibadan”. He said the void left by the late royal father would be difficult to fill. He said: “On behalf of the government and people of Edo State, I join the rest of Nigerians to condole with my brother and friend, the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and the good people of Ibadan and Oyo State on the transition of the Olubadan. The late Olubadan was an epitome of humility who devoted his life to the service of God and mankind. “At a time when some royal fathers got distracted by partisan politics, the Olubadan remained a father to all irrespective of political affiliations and persuasions. “As we mourn the passage of this great icon and role model, we are consoled that he lived to a ripe old age and under his reign, Ibadan witnessed tremendous growth, development and re-affirmed its status as a centre of commerce, scholarship, culture and a melting pot for all Nigerians. “We pray Almighty God to grant his soul eternal rest in the hereafter and give the people of Ibadan and Oyo State the grace to bear this great loss.”

Olisah Metuh’s handcuffs in order —Oshiomhole Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole said there is nothing wrong handcuffing Mr. Olisah Metuh, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to answer to charges of corruption leveled against him in relation to the $2.1bn Arms fund. Speaking during a meeting with the new Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, led by Sir Roland Osakwe in Benin City today, the Governor said those who are accused of stealing he-goats are handcuffed and paraded by the police and get no sympathy from the public, why then should Metuh and others who diverted huge public funds be treated with respect and sympathy? Oshiomhole said, “I want to appeal to the Media to join President Buhari in fighting the anti-corruption war because if we don’t, and we allow these people to harass the President to silence, all of us are in trouble. “I saw some headlines querying why should Metuh be in handcuffs. If people who steal he-goats, dried grass cutters are in handcuffs; I have been to the Police Station several times and I see young men who rob not more than N500,000 naira in handcuffs, they are paraded and made them to seat on the floor. Why should certain set of criminals be treated as if they are not suspected criminals and serious crimes at that? “When you all reported lavishly how under the former President, the former Defense Chief set up a Military Tribunal to try Soldiers who ran away from battle field and they were condemned to death. It was only Femi Falana who was consistent in fighting their case. Those are Nigerians who were to be killed for running away because they couldn’t confront a Boko Haram that was well armed while they were asked to go and fight with their bare hands and we were told that weapons, ammunitions and everything had been provided”. Oshiomhole continued, “When Borno Governor said, ‘look, our Armed Forces are fighting with bare hands’, he was told to shut up. Now it is clear from current revelations that the money that would have been used to arm these young men who joined the army with pride and who on a good day have the courage to fight not only at home but abroad, but because they didn’t have arms, they ran away. They were sentenced to death. Thanks to Buhari, some have been commuted now to various terms of imprisonment which I applaud and I think even that one should further be reviewed, they should summit their uniform but remain free people. “Now, those who shared that money, this is not the usual security money, this is special appropriation to fight Boko Haram, $2.1 billion, people just shared it, everybody was using their son, co-opting young children into this while other people’s children were sentenced to death. And anybody who partakes in that and they put him in handcuffs, they say, why should he be in handcuff because he is an elite and the media will report it without also showing us pictures of some Nigerians whose fathers are not known, but are not less Nigerian than any of us, who are always not only in handcuffs but are put on the floor in various police stations and paraded even before they are charged to court and we all look at them and turn to the next pictures, it doesn’t attract a commentary. “Why should some criminals just be celebrated even when we all can feel the amount of damage, the consequences of their rascality on our collective wellbeing. I think the media should support the President. This is not President Buhari’s fight, and you know he had reminded us that if we don’t kill corruption, it will kill us. Now corruption is fighting back. “I read one article and I was shocked with the ease at which he attempted to turn logic upside down. He said that Chief Anthony Anenih has shown how he shared the money he got from the National Security Adviser that was paid to his bank account unlike other people, he didn’t deny it. Can you deny what they pay to your bank account? If he carried it the way they usually carried money in bullion van, he would have denied it but this time, the policeman in him failed him and the money was paid to his account so he was not at liberty to deny what was documented in a banking transaction. “And then, he goes on to say he was not in a position to know that when Jonathan asked him to bring his Bank Account, he was not in a position to know the source of the money that was going to be used. Ok, maybe until he got the money, he wasn’t going to know, alright, as a former Policeman, who left Police Force under very questionable circumstances as an Assistant Commissioner, when the money hit his account, was the name of the payee not stated? When you get alert, don’t you know the source but a former Assistant Commissioner of Police didn’t know the money came from NSA office. Oshiomhole said, “So when they say those things and that the country is being ungrateful to him, can you imagine how they insult our collective intelligence and the guy even went on to say Comrade has shut up since he saw how Anenih spent the money and all these are being reported as sources close to EFCC. Why should his own be based on sources close to EFCC? He should go to EFCC and make that statement on a prescribed form, the way it is done in a Police Station. “And it is only when they are in trouble that they tell us they have medical condition. Until now, nobody knew that they had medical condition so even health is been used as an emotional instrument to curry public sympathy. Which is worst, those who are ill now because they are under investigation or those who have died as a result of the crime they committed? “So, you see, he agreed in sharing XYZ but he has not published the detail of the remaining fund. He has not disclosed how he spend it. The one they were distributing in Benin, they have not explained because you were aware when dollars and naira were being distributed. So the Edo version is yet to be opened up and it will be opened. So Anenih must be prosecuted like any other suspect, he can’t run away from it. Speaking Earlier, the Edo State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalist, Sir Roland Osakwe said they were in government House to present the new Executive Council Members of the Edo State Chapter of the NUJ to the Governor. He used the opportunity to thank the Governor for his developmental strides in the state, and for the cordial working relationship that has existed between the Union and the government in the past 7 years and sued for its sustenance.

Oshiomhole hails Air Force’s role in war against Boko Haram Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has commended officers and men of the Nigerian Air Force for their key role in decimating Boko Haram insurgents in the North East part of the country. Governor Oshiomhole was speaking, today, Tuesday January 19, 2016 in Benin City, when he played host to the the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Sidique Abubakar represented by Air Vice Marshall SS Adamu and other officers who paid him a courtesy visit in his office. Oshiomhole said: “Let me use this opportunity to convey through you to the Chief of Air Staff, that we in Edo State appreciate the huge sacrifice the Armed Forces are making to keep Nigeria safe, particularly with reference to Boko Haram. I know that the Air Force has been active in that battle, and I believe that if reports are anything to go by, that we are winning, obviously the audacity with which the insurgents were spreading freely to occupy more territories and frightening everybody. “So, you have been able to confine them to one area, and they are under severe pressure, I believe the armed forces have shown that with the correct commander-in-chief, the armed forces have the capacity and capability to deal with those insurgents. We in Edo State appreciate and I know that your officers and men have paid some price. So, convey to him our appreciation and commendation for your role in keeping these criminals out of business. “Let me on behalf of myself, government and people of Edo State welcome you very warmly to Benin City, and thank you for taking time for the courtesy visit and for all you have said. We here in Edo State, appreciate the role of the Armed Forces. We see the Armed Forces as very prominent part of the Edo community and society. And therefore, whatever we can do, we will do because the primary purpose of government is to look after communities and look after all the various interests, in your case the Armed Forces.” “We will like to appreciate the Chief of the Air Staff and all the senior officers in the Air Force for your decision to build a secondary school in Edo State. I have no doubt there are a couple of benefits that are inherent in the siting of any institution. “So, I assure you that we will communicate with the community, we have a duty to enlighten them, to educate them. We will remind them that we are under the rule of law. In our investment in Edo State, we recognize the need to interact with the communities, because we will not allow a situation where, under the guise of representing community interest undermine the development of our State. So, we will get those communities to respect the laws of the land.” Speaking earlier, the leader of the delegation, Air Vice Marshall S.S. Adamu said they were in the Government House to seek the support of the State Government in the documentation of the pieces of our land in Edo State. “We are planning to build a secondary school for the Air Force and the youths of Edo State community, but now we have a dispute with the community on the land. Already as I said earlier, we have the C of O. So, we would like the intervention of Your Excellency so that we can start the development of that land. If we have prolonged litigation, we wouldn’t know how the matter will end up. And the administration is very serious about having a secondary school in Edo State on that piece of land.” ============================================= Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and Air Vice Marshall SS Adamu, representing the Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshall Sadique Abubakar, during a courtesy visit to the Governor in Benin City today.

Mutiny: Oshiomhole begs for 66 soldiers Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to grant Presidential pardon to the sixty-six soldiers whose death sentence were recently commuted to 10 years imprisonment by the Army Authorities for offences ranging from insurbodinate behavior to mutiny, among others. Governor Oshiomhole said based on the strength of the recent revelations on the $2.1 billion funds for arms purchase which was mismanaged by the last administration, the President should, in the spirit of the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, spare them the jail term but could dismiss them from the Army for their acts of indiscipline. The Governor made this appeal while delivering his speech at the grand finale of the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day on in Benin City today, Friday January 15 . The Governor while acknowledging the noble role of the Armed Forces in ensuring peace and the unity of the nation even at the cost of paying the supreme sacrifice said it would amount to injustice if the Military Personnel who were sent to the war front without arms were made to wallow in prison while those who diverted the funds meant for Arms purchases are being granted bail by the law courts. The Governor said: “I ask Edo people to stand by our Armed Forces, to support the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari to reposition the Armed Forces, to re-kit them but also to revive our economy. The revelation about diversion of funds meant to equip the Armed Forces is not funny and therefore we must all give the President the support he needs to bring to justice those who diverted money meant to secure all of us and convert them to political funds. “These same people sat in the comfort of their office, looking at their loot and they had the guts to put on trial soldiers who were ill-equipped and were asked to go and commit suicide in the face of Boko Haram. I am happy that the Military have in their wisdom through their own judicial process committed those death sentences to various terms of imprisonment for those soldiers who were involved. “I am not an apostle or a supporter of indiscipline but I believe it is also a matter of hypocrisy to tie the legs of a young man or a woman and ask him to go and get involved in an Olympic race. If you chain him, how can he run?” Oshiomhole continued: “I therefore want to lend my voice on behalf of the people of Edo State, that those soldiers at best can be dismissed from the Armed Forces, but they should not be allowed to wallow in prison. The point has been made that money meant for them was shared. If those who shared it are not likely to face death sentence, they even enjoy the liberty of bail from our high court, nothing justifies harsh treatment to the victims of their own executive rascality. “So, I appeal to President Buhari to use his powers to grant them pardon even if they will not be allowed to retain their uniforms. We all have learnt to be vigilant and to support our Armed Forces.” While emphasizing the importance and sanctity of our unity, Oshiomhole called on the political class to be mindful of their utterances in the overall interest of the country saying, “I want to use this occasion to appeal to our political class not to allow their personal and selfish interest to override national interest and consideration and make inflammatory statements that questions the unity of our great country. I hold the view that the unity of a nation state cannot be treated the way the unity of voluntary association is done.” Governor Oshiomhole pledged the government’s continued support for the Armed Forces and the wards of soldiers who paid the supreme price in ensuring the unity of the nation. He said, “Edo State Government will support the legion with the sum of 10million naira and I will appeal to the legion to particularly show firm support to those widows arising from Boko Haram activities. If there is any of them whose children is in Edo State who are supposed to be in school, in universities and they are not there, because their parents are no more, Edo State Government even at this hour, we are ready to pick up their school fees that they may be able to attend university, colleges of education or polytechnics as the case may be to show that we do care that they died just so that we might survive here.” Governor Oshiomhole along with other dignitaries later performed the laying of wreaths at the cenotaph of the unknown soldier at the Museum ground, Benin city.

How Jonathan threatened to cage me —Oshiomhole Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has revealed how former President Goodluck Jonathan threatened to cage him after May 29 2015, for throwing his weight behind the candidature of President Muhammadu Buhari in the last general elections. Speaking at a meeting with APC leaders across the three Senatorial Districts of Edo State yesterday, Thursday 14th January 2016, , a highly elated Oshiomhole said "around this time last year, the tension in Nigeria was such that Prophets of doom around the world were almost unanimous that Nigeria would not survive 2015 but as you can see, man proposes, God disposes. "Around this time last year, in January, a few weeks to the election, many were saying quite recklessly on radio and television that we were finished. "The former President, Goodluck Jonathan told our National Chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun to inform me that after the election, he will put me, Adams, the son of Oshiomhole in a hole and I told Chief Oyegun to inform him to dig that hole very deep because although I am short, in the course of pushing me into the hole, nobody knows who will get there first. "Since he is taller than me, he needs to dig the hole deep enough so that either of us can get in. In the end, he is inside the hole and I am busy putting dust into that hole". Oshiomhole continued, "In this hall, around this time last year, we held a meeting to share information about what was going on in various local governments and the specific challenges in each of those local government in order to fashion out appropriate response. "Some of the statements that we shared in those meetings included threats that by June, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole would have been impeached because PDP would write results whether we liked it or not. They would overrun the House of Assembly and once the House is proclaimed in June, before the end of June, Comrade would be banished to his house in the village and from there to prison. "Those who made those threats, who supervised those processes, even now in their early 90s are writing letters to explain how they shared money meant for defence. Every evil weapon they fashioned against me did not prosper and even the ones they are fashioning now will not prosper.” Reminding the party leaders of the journey so far and how the Party has risen from ground zero to become the leading party in Nigeria, Oshiomhole said, "When we came in about 7 years ago, my party had no control even of one ward. We had no control of one local government, but today, we control wards, local, state and by the special grace of God, federal. Things have changed. The one who tamed a lion with bare hands, now with automatic weapons, no antelope can dare us in our own forest.”

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has called on the former Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Anenih, to return the N260m allegedly shared to him by the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, from the $2.1 billion Abacha loot meant for arms purchase to fight terrorism in parts of the country.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/195452-dasukigate-return-your-n260m-share-oshiomhole-tells-anenih.html |
Government Taxation Policy: Adams Oshiomhole’s Government in Perspective By Victor Oshioke Tax can be loosely defined as” a compulsory and definite amount levy on adult citizenry of a particular country the collection of which is backed by the statutory provision of a state. A tax is a pecuniary burden laid upon individual or property to support government expenditure. Therefore, a tax is not levied in return for any specific service or services rendered by the government.” (Lekan et al, (2006). Tax according to the National Tax policy for Nigeria is “a monetary charge on a person’s or entity’s income, property or transaction and is usually collected by a defined authority at the federal; and state level.” Taxation is one of the first necessities that led to the emergence of government and the organization of society as we know it today. Yet the task of collecting taxes has never been easy. This is clearly demonstrated in the Holy Bible when the Pharisees questioned the holiness of Jesus Christ for having the audacity to sit down at table and eat with tax collectors.{ Mark 2:16 } By implication, Tax collectors were the most vilified, abhorred and loathed public officials from time immemorial. No wonder then that even today, any attempt to introduce, modify or reform any aspects of taxation, no matter how well intentioned and even from the most benevolent, people oriented government, is always resisted at first until the benefits begin to dawn on the populace and the real intentions begin to manifest in terms of verifiable evidence of what taxes collected were used to provide. Nara Monkam and Mick Moore, in their book “How Property Tax Would Benefit Africa”, argued that: “The developmental benefits of governments taxing citizens, even for modest sums, are often disregarded. African governments have long depended on revenue from natural resources or foreign aid to fund budgets. While the potential contribution that better domestic resource mobilization could make to national finances has received greater attention since the 2008 global financial crisis, international donors often fail to recall the central role that bargaining over taxation has played in building effective, accountable and responsive states across the developed world. Although never popular, taxation is an essential component of consensual and representative government…Property taxation is widely regarded as highly progressive and equitable because the sum due is determined by wealth rather than being a percentage levy on transactions” In Nigeria, it is ironic that whereas there is unanimity of opinion that government at all levels should strive to generate revenue internally and depend less on oil based federal allocations, opinion is sharply divided each time a government, especially at state and local government levels, resort to the most reliable avenue to generate revenue internally which is through taxation. Even more confounding is the fact that commentators who utilize every available opportunity on morning talk shows, to call on government to be more aggressive in generating internal revenue are the same commentators, who utilize the same space, to denounce government, whenever attempt is made to enhance IGR through taxation Since Adams Oshiomhole became governor, Edo state has not introduced any form of taxation that is not consistent with the peculiar circumstances of the state. This is in spite of dwindling resources which has compelled some state governments to introduce unconventional forms of levies, duties and fines in a desperate attempt to boost IGR. The Land Use Charge 2012, which is just now being implemented in the state, is well in tandem with the TAXES AND LEVIES (APPROVED LIST FOR COLLECTION) ACT, CAP.T2, LAWS OF THE FEDERATION OF NIGERIA, 2004, amended as: ”SCHEDULE TO THE TAXES AND LEVIES (APPROVED LIST FOR COLLECTION) ACT (AMMENDMENT) ORDER, 2015” Official Gazette No. 77 Vol. 102 of 9th June 2015, duly signed by Dr. Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, OFR, as Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance. Part 11 of the Schedule to the principal Act was amended by (a) Substituting the existing item 7 with a new item 7 as follows “7. Business premises registration in respect of urban and rural areas which include registration fees and per annum renewals as fixed by each state “and b) Inserting immediately after the existing item 11, new item 12 to 25 as follows “12. Land use charge, where applicable; 13. Hotel, Restaurant or Event Center Consumption Tax, where applicable; 14. Entertainment Tax, where applicable; 15. Enviromental (Ecological) fee or levy, where applicable; 16. Mining, Milling and Quarrying fee, where applicable; 17. Animal Trade Tax, where applicable; 18. Produce Sales Tax, where applicable; 19. Slaughter and Abattoir Fees, where State Finance is involved; 20. Infrastructure Maintenance Charge or Levy, where applicable; 21. Fire Service Charge, 22. Property Tax, where applicable; 23. Economic Development Levy where applicable; 24. Social Services Contribution Levy where applicable; and 25. Signages and Mobile Advertisement jointly collected by States and Local Governments” I have taken the pains to list out these charges and levies approved by the Federal government, to underscore the point that Edo State Government did not arbitrarily introduce Land Use Charge. As a matter of fact, there are numerous taxes, charges and levies, which are veritable sources of IGR and implemented in other states of the federation, but which the Edo State government has overlooked because of the likely effects they will have on the common man. The Edo State Land Use Charge 2012, is a progressive tax initiative in line with modern global reforms geared toward making the wealthy in society contribute a fair share to help provide amenities for the communities where, in most cases, they generate their wealth. The Law adequately makes provisions to exempt the vulnerable in society. It excludes palaces, places of worship; properties of senior citizens, premises used for charitable causes, family compounds within appreciable space, and reserve latitude for the governor to consider a property for exemption Available statistics show that civil servants pay their fair share of taxes commensurate with their income through the PAYE system. The wealthy, self employed business persons on the other hand have perfected ways and means to evade paying their fair share of taxes though official declaration of losses, even when they spend billions in acquiring exotic cars and properties in choice areas of the state. With the land use charge, at least they will be compelled to pay a fair share of taxes for their physical properties which can be assessed and appropriately taxed. Further statistics show that in Edo State for instance, apart from PAYE, less than a quarter of eligible taxpayers actually pay their taxes. How do we then expect government to meet its service delivery obligation to the people? There can be no fairness in a system where a property in GRA Benin City, with a yearly rent of N500, 000 per 3 bedrooms flat pays the same tenement rate as a property in Ekenwhuan road which goes for N120, 000 per 3 bedrooms flat? It also makes no economic sense for someone to own multiple properties in choice areas of an urban community and end up paying nothing to the government nor contribute to the development of the host community. As stakeholders in the Edo project, there should be a paradigm shift in the parameters of discussion on how best to move this State forward, It is my opinion that the discussion at this point should be centered on how to ensure consistent assessment and valuation, accountability and judicious use of the increased IGR which will emanate from the Land Use Charge. Our society will be better served when we see ourselves as partners in the development project. It is time we see our state as a cooperative society where we all pay our taxes which is in turn used for the benefit of all. Federal allocation will then become a bonus which can be invested in capital projects for the benefit of our children. The goal of every responsible government should be to generate enough revenue internally to meet its recurrent expenditures. Anything short of that vision will amount to perpetuating economic stagnation. Our own duty is to live up to expectations as responsible citizens by paying our taxes irrespective of our objections to the logic of such taxes, because in the final analysis, the Edo State land Use Charge is backed by law and anyone who does not pay the charge becomes a law breaker. In line with international best practices, there is right of appeal for charges imposed, and incentive in the form of 10% discount for those who pay up without delay. What else can one ask for in terms of a humane, considerate and modern tax regime? One of the greatest misconceptions about the Land Use Charge is the idea that it is a new tax. Governments at state and local levels have always collected tax on land and properties, in form of tenement rate and ground tax. What the Land Use Charge does is that it consolidates all land based rates and taxes into one single charge to avoid double taxation. In this instance, the state will collect the tax, take its share and pay the Local governments their share. So, rather than been seen as anti people, this tax regime is essentially in the interest of taxpayers. We are in an election season and naturally, the polity is tense. Opposition politicians are apt to try discrediting government policies no matter how good intentioned they are. But a responsible government will make policies that will ultimately better the lives of citizens, no matter how unpopular those policies might be in the short run. The Edo State Land Use Charge is a good initiative whose benefits transcends political seasons and calculations. It positions the state for a great leap into a secured economic future. Amongst other, anticipated benefits of the Property tax include: 1) Increased IGR to be invested in the development of Edo State 2) With increased IGR, the state will become more credit worthy and can borrow money for capital projects 3) Wealthy people will be more interested in charity activities since by giving some of their properties for charitable causes, like Motherless Children’s Homes, accommodation for homeless people, widows quarters etc. such premises will qualify to apply for exemption from the land use charge. 4) There will be a reduced interest in land speculation. Benin City for instance is one of the fastest growing metropolises in Nigeria. This has opened the floodgate for wealthy land speculators to buy lands in fast developing areas like Ugbor, Amagba etc, and leave the land fallow for a few years. This drives up the price of land in such areas and within a span of 5 to 10 years the value of the land appreciates from between 300 to 500% 5) There will be fewer abandoned premises which make areas like GRA an eyesore 6) There will be more land available for purchase in choice areas for people who genuinely want to build houses as opposed to those who already have good residential houses but simply want to acquire more land. Oshiomhole visits Warri regent, says Edo, Delta remain united Governor Adams Oshiomhole today said Edo and Delta States remain united even after Delta State was carved out of the defunct Bendel State and the remaining part was renamed Edo State by the General Ibrahim Babangida administration on August 27, 1991. Speaking during a condolence visit to the Regent of Warri Kingdom, Prince Eroro Emiko, on the recent transition of the Olu of Warri, His Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse II, Governor Oshiomhole said: “I have come here on behalf of the Government and people of Edo State to convey to you the Regent, the royal family, indeed the Chiefs and the great people of Warri Kingdom our condolences over the passage of our father. “For us in Edo State, we are all brothers and sisters, we are not just neighbours, we are very close brothers and sisters and we appreciate the enormous contributions of the Olu of Warri, not only to the development of Warri Kingdom but also to Nigeria at large. “As a matter of fact, one of my very close friends recently gave out his daughter to one of his sons, so we are part of his family and we need not to elaborate on how we feel on his sudden departure and his having to join his ancestors, at the time he did. As they say, we are not in a position to question God, nor can we question our ancestors except to pray that God in his infinite power grant mercy not only to him but also to the entire people of Warri kingdom. “I wanted to come a littler earlier but I am aware of certain traditions and certain procedures that will be observed and I fully appreciate some of the issues you raised, I will still come back when all of those processes are completed and everything is in place. But I felt convinced that even before then, I must come to pay my respect on behalf of myself and the good people of Edo State. “We value the relationship that exists between us and in the spirit of Bendel, we are all one and the same and when there is something positive to share, we share the joy just the same way we share the stress when it is otherwise. “I want to reassure you that at this hour, we are with you in our thoughts and prayers and we trust that the bond of friendship that has always existed between our people will grow from strength to strength. It is our prayers that God in his infinite mercies will continue to bring blessings to the people of Warri, the people of Delta, and indeed to the people of Bendel and that we remain united as one people with a shed destiny. “On his part, the Regent of Warri Kingdom said, “I want to thank you for the kind words that you made in respect of our departed father and it gives us joy. He came, he saw and he conquered and he made giant strides in his life. He also spoke about the bond between us and Edo State. I just want to add that apart from what you said, this Warri Kingdom started in the 15th Century, when the 1st son of Oba left Benin with 70 Chiefs to found Warri kingdom. “So we the royal family have a lot of things in common with Benin where you are the Governor. Also, we have many of our communities in your state, so our bond is a strong one. “We thank you for coming to pay solidarity with us at this time. Our hearts are heavy but when we look around and see people like you around, it gives us confidence that we will get to our goal. We are in the process of planning the funeral rites and then after, we will install the succeeding Olu.” ======================================================== Pic 1) Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State signs the condolence register during his visit, on Monday, to the Regent of Warri Kingdom, Prince Eroro Emiko, on the recent transition of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II. Oshiomhole advocates stiffer penalties for rape, child abuse Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has advocated stiffer penalties for rapists, paedophiles and anyone involved in child abuse to serve as deterrence to others. He also urged people of the state to stop giving alms to child beggars to discourage the rising trend of child beggars in the state. Speaking to the Chairman and members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in the state, led by Mrs. Stella Ojemen, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, on Tuesday, Oshiomhole said, “Edo State Government appreciates that you are addressing some of the challenges that government ought to have addressed like ensuring that we all mount campaigns against rape and defilement as well as ensure that when people are suspected of these heinous crimes, that they are properly arrested and diligently prosecuted with a view to sending them to prison if found guilty. “We have discussed this, time and again at our Executive Council Meetings and at a point, we asked the Attorney-General to review the laws such that the number of years a convict gets will be commensurate with the severe nature of rape and defilement”. Oshiomhole continued, “we are concerned, we have discussed this and we have a feeling that the number of reported cases are on the increase. We also know that because of the nature of our environment, there will be several others that may not even be reported at all. “When you look at the sheer number of rape cases that are recorded, it is clear that across the country, both rape and defilement cases are increasing and therefore this calls for tougher measures on the part of those strengthening the law and providing for stiffer and harsher punishments than what is currently obtainable, and to also ensure that the few cases that are reported are properly prosecuted with a view to securing conviction. “Consistent with our commitment in this area, I would advise that whenever you have such cases, when you are likely to have much more information than even the Ministry of Justice or Police, and there might be even cases where efforts are made to cover up cases reported in some quarters, you as an NGO might wish to open up such cases. So I will advise you to liaise effectively with the Attorney-General and also encourage the Local Government Chapters to ensure that all cases are reported.” The Governor however noted that the State has recorded a high level of victory in the fight against kidnapping and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that kidnappers are completely put out of business in the State. He said, “I appreciate the issues you raised about kidnapping and the peculiar challenges that female victims suffer but we are dealing with it globally and we have recorded a lot of achievements. We have presently up to 50 cases of kidnappers that have been arrested and so the era of impunity where the state appears helpless is over. “The unfortunate thing though is that as we apprehend we still have more young people going into the business. We will sustain our effort at arresting and ensuring prosecution. We have amended the law to provide for death penalty for proven cases of kidnapping and also to demolish the houses of the kidnappers or any premises used for kidnapping because we feel that landlords are liable, they are supposed to verify the character and status of their tenants. These are some of the measures we have taken to ensure that we make the state a lot safer for our people”. The Governor called on the people of the State to join hands with Government and other Non Governmental Organizations to ensure that incidents of child labour and street begging are completely wiped out of the State adding that Edo people are not lazy and will never succumb to begging as an alternative to hard work. He said, “on the issue of Child Labour, I am disturbed at the growing number of beggars and their children that I see along the streets and a lot of these people are people who have migrated to Edo these past few months and unless we take firm measures, Edo may become a haven for beggars that have been thrown out of even their own states of origin where begging has been prohibited. I have directed the Commissioner for Women Affair to take firm measures to bring this incidence to an end. “Edo cannot be a haven for beggars. We recognize the economic challenges but begging is not and will not be the solution and exposing children to begging is unhealthy and I will even appeal to Edo people not to give alms to child beggars because it doesn’t help because it is their parents that push this children to the street, they use them in the manner they do hoping they will attract pity. The more pity we show to those kids, the more they are subjected to these dehumanizing practices. This is not a thing to be encouraged.” Earlier, Chairperson of International Federation of Women Lawyers, Edo State Branch, Mrs. Stella Ojemen said they were in Government House to promote the rights of women and children. She said, “We are not profit making and not a religious organization, non-political. Our duties are simple: to ensure that women and children who are confronted with all kinds of issues are protected. We are disturbed by the incidence of child labor and trafficking of women in the state and with the plight of widows who are being disturbed by the families of the husband. “We are worried by the incidence of female gender mutilation. We are also worried about the maltreatment of women and children in crisis zones and we are really disturbed by all of these issues.”

N-Delta will benefit from Buhari’s govt, says Oshiomhole Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says the Niger Delta region will benefit immensely from the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. Speaking on Monday during the visit of the Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw who led other members of the Board including the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NDDC, Mr Bassey Dan-Abia to his office, Oshiomhole said events of the past few years have shown that the friends of the Niger Delta are not necessarily from the region. He said: “I am aware that the Board has initiated a number of projects and according to you, you have over a thousand of them totaling over a trillion naira. These are huge numbers. The expectations of the people of the Niger Delta are very high as they expect that the intervention agency would find resources to address their critical needs. “I also know that the Board has been afflicted by critical Nigerian disease namely: clarity of ideas; the need to take extraordinary measures. “The law is specifically clear as to how NDDC should be funded and all that is expected is that the Federal Ministry of Finance or to be more specific, the Federal Government ought to ensure that the law they had passed and signed which are in operation are enforced to the letter so that they in turn can compel the Board to ensure that the fund is judiciously expended. “I am very confident that President Muhammadu Buhari, given his passion for development as a trusted friend of the poor masses which is his own main constituency, will do everything possible to look at the letter and the spirit and do whatever has to be done to ensure that the law of NDDC is complied with.” Speaking further, the Governor said “We governors of the South-South region are meeting in the last week of this month and one of the issues to be discussed will be how we can collaborate to ensure that NDDC delivers on its mandate and gets the support of the appropriate authority so that it has the wherewithal to deal with projects that will impact on the region.” Making a case for the NDDC to embark on major infrastructure projects, Oshiomhole said “the condition of the South-South will be effectively serviced with an efficient and effective rail system”, assuring that regardless of political party affiliations, Governors of the Niger Delta are united in their desire to ensure rapid development of the region. He advised the State Commissioners on the NDDC Board to ensure that the views they canvass at the commission reflect the expectations of the people of their states. He said: “One major weakness I have observed in the running of the commission is that it has been over politicized. It was not meant to be a political vehicle. Nigeria has opted for a multiple political democracy and our people from time to time could replace a government and a political party. No party will be too good to govern forever. Regardless of the government, there are certain key principles that must never be sacrificed, namely that composition of the Board must be made of people who bring to it the aspirations of their respective states. “Governments will come and go but the people will remain. So you need to liaise and ensure you carry the authorities along. In each state, there is nobody who can claim to have the mandate of the people to govern more that the Governor, just like there is nobody in Nigeria who can claim to have a popular mandate to govern Nigeria than the president”, he said. Earlier, Chairman of the Board, Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw appealed to the Governor to intervene on behalf of the NDDC to get the funds due to the Board released. According to him, the NDDC has not been funded, according to law, since 2001 and over N800 billion due to the Board unremitted. He said the “vision of the Board is one that can provide a platform and the avenue for integrating and developing the Niger Delta sub-region through strategic intervention and key infrastructure development in road, rail and education. “We can create business investment and employment opportunities for our people. We are not unaware of the negative perception of our people, but as a Board we have come determined to change that”, he said. -------------------------------------------- Governor Adams Oshiomhole (right), Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw (middle), Chairman, NDDC and Mr Bassey Dan-Abia MD/CEO NDDC during the visit of Chairman and mebers of Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission to the Governor in his office, on Monday.

Oshiomhole seeks awareness to combat sickle cell Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has advocated greater enlightenment campaigns to stem the tide of sickle cell disorders in the state. He spoke in Benin City, Monday, during a meeting with members of the Sickle Cell Club in his office. According to the Governor, as part of government’s plan to cater for sickle cell sufferers, the State Government will set up a Sickle Cell Board to properly cater for the needs of sufferers. He said: “to propagate awareness is much more important because, as they say, prevention is better that cure. Sickle cell as we all know is something that can be prevented by ensuring that the people with certain blood grade don’t get married. “So raising awareness is at the heart of the objective of this centre. “How the centre is run and the rules of the centre are the prerogative of the Edo state government. Therefore the authority of the commissioner to regulate, reorganize and restructure the affairs of the centre is provided for in this law as the full authority. Governor Oshiomhole however regretted the misconception of members of the Sickle Cell Club on the aims and objectives of the Sickle Cell Center and called on members to properly acquaint themselves with the law establishing the centre. He said the Government will properly equip the new Central Hospital, on completion, and employ specialists in various fields of medicine so that sickle cell sufferers can get the best treatment in the hospital. He said “Government will take advantage of this meeting to review all aspects of the Centre to re-constitute the Board strictly as provided for under this law that set up the Centre, with focus to remain faithful to the provision of this law.” Earlier in his address, the Chairman, Sickle Cell Club, Dr. Osagie Onaiwu said they were in Government House to draw the Governor’s attention to the plight of Sickle Cell sufferers and the state of the Sickle Cell Centre in Benin City. |
Oshiomhole bags labour award THE Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreation Service Employees (AUPCTRE) has bestowed the award of Commander-in-Chief of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Grand Patron of the Union on Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State. President of the Union, Comrade Solomon Adelaja said AUPCTRE bestowed the award on the Edo State Governor because he is a worthy ambassador of the labour union. Speaking during the award ceremony, Adelaja said: “we concluded the need for us to appreciate you because, talking about labour movement in Nigeria, you are not only a worthy ambassador but a leader of labour in Nigeria today. “When we look around, we have so many politicians, the moment they are elected and sworn in, they forget all their constituents but you were with us in Abuja when the NLC election came up, when it was aborted and it was later reconvened at Eagles Square you were also with us.” Comrade Adelaja continued: “When we had crisis after the elections, you were not discouraged, you were busy moving from one place to another to ensure we have a united Nigeria Labour Congress. For not forgetting your constituency and the role you have been playing, we want to appreciate you for this. “Like you know, this Union has produced labour leaders not only in Nigeria but across the globe and so we have a shortlist of about four to five past leaders for special awards for being visionary. When we considered the role you played, we give you kudos. If not for you, there wouldn’t have been any union as AUPCTRE. In addition to this, we are aware of your resolve to give priority to the payment of salaries of workers in the state even before the last working day of every month .” Comrade Adelaja added, “Today, we have many states that earn about four times more than Edo State earns from the Federation Account but they never make workers salary a priority. They owe workers 3 to 5 months salary, even as I speak to you, I am aware that Edo State has paid May salary to the workers. “As a result of this, we have decided to come personally to thank you, appreciate you and say we are proud to associate ourselves with your leadership. Many who were out of job in Edo Line Transport Company are back to their work and all members of staff are praying for you. As a man of honor and respect, we present to you today the Award of Commander-in-Chief of Labour Forces in Nigeria and a Pillar of Labour in Nigeria.” In his remark, Governor Oshiomhole expressed appreciation to the National Leadership of AUPCTRE for the honour bestowed on him. According to him, “I am very thankful and indeed I feel very flattered by a lot of the very generous comments you made about my person and my contribution to the merger process that led to Civil Service, Technical becoming Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Employees, AUPCTRE, thereby becoming a much larger body within the Nigeria Labour union family.” Oshiomhole while describing his relationship with erstwhile Comrades in union activities said, “Your union has been a remarkable ally and has produced a number of leaders that have contributed and helped to shape the direction of labour movement in Nigeria. “The Civil Service Technical now AUPCTRE can be said to be the real founder of modern labour in Nigeria and I am very impressed that you Mr. President have sustained the tradition”, he said. -------------------------------------------- Comrade Solomon Adelaja, President Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreation Service Employees (AUPCTRE) (middle) and Secretary, Comrade Bosede Oise (left) present a Merit Award to Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State during a visit to the Governor.

Edo Govt not owing workers — NLC, TUC BENIN CITY – The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in Edo State say their members are not being owed salary arrears by the Edo state government and therefore have no cause to go on strike over non-payment of salaries as in some states. Reacting to the threat of strike in some states owing to the non-payment of salaries and a newspaper publication which listed Edo as one of the affected states, the organised Labour stated that the allegation was false as it did not represent the situation on ground. In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Emmanuel Ademokun, Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Comrade Charles Oronsaye, Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), the organised Labour declared, “for the purpose of clarity and record, we wish to state that the Edo State government has paid the salaries of its employees in the public sector (health sector, teachers, civil servants) and its parastatals”. The Unions added that apart from some organizations where labour still had issues for which it was currently discussing with government, all other employees of the state had been paid up to date. Labour advised the media to always confirm their before going to press to avoid misconception and swaying the public., noting that the state government had made significant strides in the payment of salaries and deserved to be acknowledged so as to encourage performance. Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Louis Odion in a statement had said: “While it is true that some states are currently unable to meet their financial obligation, Edo remains an exemplar. For the records, Edo State Government does not owe workers salary arrears as the government has fully discharged its obligations. As a matter of state policy since Comrade Oshiomhole assumed office in 2008, pensioners receive their pay first, followed by workers who get paid not later than the 25th of every month. The policy has not changed. For April, all pensioners and workers were also paid on schedule. “Comrade Oshiomhole's entire life has been devoted to the defence and advancement of the workers' cause. While it is true that states have come under heavy pressure on account of steep fall in oil price, for the Comrade Governor, the pay day remains sacrosanct. Through prudent management, the Comrade Governor is not just paying salaries and pension on schedule but is also able to keep contractors working on sites across the state.”

Jonathan’s transformation has deformed Nigeria —Oshiomhole Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says the transformation agenda of the present administration has failed to make any meaningful impact on the country, and rather than transform the country, President Goodluck Jonathan’s transformation agenda has deformed the country. Speaking after a road walk tagged “March for Buhari” which started from Oba Ovonramwen square, the city centre, and culminated in a mass rally in the New Benin area of the state capital, Monday, Oshiomhole said Nigerians have the opportunity on Saturday to vote out the government which has failed them in the past 16 years. Oshiomhole said the Jonathan administration has abused the trust of the people and should be voted out. He said: “I have seen the huge gap between the promise and the reality. Nigeria today is 16 years into democracy. Governments have come and made promises, they have abused the trust of our people. “On Saturday, Nigerians are being called upon, there will be a referendum, a referendum whereby every Nigerian from the age of 18 and above, who is equipped with a PVC will have to make a decision that will define the future of our great nation and indeed the future of the black race. “What are the issues? We have two items on the menu chart. One group insists that they want continuity. They even insist that Nigeria has been transformed and we have another group of people who say that Nigeria needs change. Change to a better future. “Now people are asking, what is the content of this change, what are we changing to? What are we changing from and like those who want continuity, transformation, what have we transformed? “For those that say they want continuity, what is it we want to continue with? 16 years into democracy, Africa’s most populous nation, most naturally endowed nation under one party for 16 years even the poor are using generator, the rich are using generator, even the villa, the seat of government, is using generator. For 16 years, PDP failed to deliver on one of the most fundamental issues in the Nigerian economy, the issue of power supply. “Without power supply, nothing will work; the local woman cannot grind her cassava except there is a generator to power the grinding machine, the local businessman who tries to start a small scale business needs a generator to run his business. Who wants us to continue in the dark? Are they saying we should continue living in darkness? “NEPA does not give you light for months and yet they ask you, a democratic country, a free country to pay fixed charges even when they deliver fixed darkness. Who says we should continue with this condition? “One of the primary purpose of government is to protect its citizen. But the Nigerian Government offers protection to private companies to extort money from our people for putting us in the dark, that is a crime against humanity. Even in the days of dictatorship, we were never so ruthlessly exploited. “Today, Nigeria is importing petroleum products. As we import these products, NNPC tells us that they are subsidizing your kerosene for N50. They ship about $30 million taxpayer’s money, they give it to themselves at $10 million and they pocket $20 million and share it among themselves. Today a litre of kerosene is sold for N150 yet NNPC says they are subsidizing it to N50. “When a government allows the poor to be so ruthlessly exploited, from Edo State to Lagos state, to Bayelsa state, to River state, to Sokoto State, all over Nigeria. Do you want this to continue? “Where is the transformation? They have transformed refineries that were working when General Buhari was the Minister of Petroleum to refineries that are not working. This issue is about common sense. When the Warri refinery was working, many of our people were employed there, earning good salaries, and adding value to society. When General Buhari was head of State, all our refineries were working. He refused to take the IMF Loan. N1 was equivalent to $1 but today, $1 is N230. “There was no single reported case of kidnapping in Nigeria before PDP took over power in Nigeria. I ask you on Saturday to make a choice. I have made my choice. Who wants to continue with unemployment where Government invited young people to apply for job in the Immigration service and everybody was compelled to pay N1,000. That money is illegal. Somebody made N800 million out of poor Nigerian youths. If government will not protect the unemployed, who will protect them? “We want to change the story. We want to change from darkness to light so that when you switch on your light, it works. If Ghana can achieve 24 hours of uninterrupted power supply, why can’t we do it? We want to change from generator that is noisy, polluting the environment to power supply that is reliable. We want to remove the fraud that was committed in the name of privatization that disrupted power supply. “Fixed charges will be abolished in an APC government. General Buhari will not allow any body to be made to pay when power is not delivered. No light, no pay. “When people have done bad things and you ask them for accountability, they resort to ethnicity and religion. I ask you to find courage to interrogate all those miscreants who are preaching messages of hate, who wants to pitch Christians against Muslims. They say Buhari will Islamize Nigeria. General Buhari was a military Head of State with both Executive and Legislative Power, did he Islamize Nigeria? “It is true he sent some people to jail but did he jail innocent people? He jailed corrupt people and he will jail corrupt people again. There is no running away from it. That is why they are afraid, that is the message. “So I ask you to stand up. You must be on your feet. “Yesterday, I read in the newspaper that some people are doing a show of force but today we are doing a show of the people’s power.” Go out on Saturday and vote General Mohammadu Buhari, to secure your future and the future of your children. ============================================ Governor Adams Oshiomhole addresses a rally in New Benin to conclude the "March for Buhari" campaign in Benin City, on Monday March 23 2015. . |
Why PDP has failed for 16 years — Oshiomhole Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State says the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has failed for sixteen years because the party cannot give what it doesn’t have, saying the PDP-led Federal Government has become the weak link in Nigeria’s federal system and the time for Change has come for the country to move forward. The Governor said another four years of the Peoples Democratic Party at the Federal level would worsen the hardship and sufferings of Nigerians as it is a government full of deceit. Speaking at the campaign rallies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ovia North East, Ovia South West and Egor Local Government Areas of Edo state, on Tuesday, Oshiomhole said, “we have looked at all the indices. The truth is that the Federal Government has become the weakest link in our development process. We can’t create jobs because there is no power. “Everywhere I go to in Edo, people are protesting over blackout. The State government provides the transformers, but private people come to collect the bills whether they give light or not. “When you watch television, they tell you they have done railways, that trains are working everywhere. Among you here, who has entered a PDP train? Is it on television we will keep seeing it? The Gelegele Port, have they done anything there? Can you have a government that keeps deceiving its people? You cannot fool us forever. The story in Edo is the same everywhere. They have failed everywhere. “Nobody can give what he doesn’t have. PDP has no answer to the challenges of this nation and therefore cannot solve our problems”, he noted. Oshiomhole said, “a government cannot abandon its people to be suffering. Our country has lost virtually everything. Our refineries are closed. We are importing virtually everything when we should be exporting. When General Buhari was Minister of Petroleum, they were building refineries but today Ministers prefer to be importing. “You can’t have a country that imports everything it consumes. So PDP is effectively carrying our jobs abroad and importing unemployment in to the country. More than 60% of our young people have no jobs. If we continue like this, those who have something to live for will be so little that those who have nothing to live for will completely overwhelm us and there will be crisis everywhere”. Governor Oshiomhole urged the people of the state to come out en masse and vote for positive change which the APC represents so as to restore the dignity of the nation and place the nation on its path to sustainable development and economic growth. He said, “In our national interest, we need to make a change at the federal level and with General Muhammadu Buhari, we will have a leader with courage and Nigeria will regain its pride. If we have a Federal Government that is working, complementing the state government’s efforts, we will be far ahead. “February 14th is the day God has designed to show His love to Nigeria by replacing darkness with light. By replacing a government that celebrates corruption and bringing General Muhammadu Buhari that will fight and defeat corruption. Nigerians have to make a change, we can’t continue this way”, he stressed. Governor Oshiomhole thanked the people for the support they have given to his administration in the past six years and promised them that his government will continue to bring dividends of democracy to them. He said, “We thank God for giving us wisdom to do what we have to do and the courage to resist temptation. People ask me where we find the money we are using to work and my answer is that there is no government anywhere in the world that has all the money it needs but if a government orders its priority well and manages public resources with the fear of God, you may not do everything but you will do enough for people to see and for others to build on and I believe that is what we have done”, he said. Oshiomhole stated that the flooding problem that have affected most part of the metropolis is presently being addressed and assured that flooding will soon become a thing of the past in Edo State saying, “The flooding problem of this area is being addressed on a sustainable basis. As we speak, we have paid almost 70% of the total cost and within the next few months, in the dry season, the remaining part will be completed. “We have moved now to Queen Ede erosion site and the contractors have moved to site. We have also moved to Ekenwan road to address the erosion there, we are also working in Second East Circular road and we have no problem addressing other issues confronting the state because the major drainage issue has been settled” he said. The APC candidates in Egor, Ovia North East and Ovia South West Local Government Areas are Hon. Samson Osagie for Senate; Hon. Charity Amayeanwho for House of Representatives; Hon. Paul Ohonbamu for House of Representatives; Hon. Sunday Osazinwde, Hon Bright Osayande and Hon. Crosby Eribo for House of Assembly. They are nervous that in spite of their evil wishes, Comrade Oshiomhole still enjoys a harmonious and affable relationship with the President.
