Though the software teams at BlackBerry suggested they’d be beginning the roll-out of BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) as an app for Android and iOS starting this week, it would now appear that they’ve hit the proverbial pause button for both platforms. While it’s unclear at the moment if this cut in downloads and service to the chat app ecosystem for both Google and Apple’s mobile OS had anything to do with BlackBerry’s announcement of history- making losses for the quarter, it is clear that the results are thus: some people can use BBM today, others cannot. Straight from Inside BlackBerry’s Luke Reimer comes word that some issues have arisen for both the Android and iOS versions of BBM. First, it would seem that the BBM app for Android was never officially released, but the BBM team saw a whopping 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours of app release. The BBM user numbers BlackBerry speaks of here come from an unofficial “unreleased version of the BBM for Android app” which was posted online before it could hit Google Play. BlackBerry is being iffy on how this app saw the light of day, but are now addressing “issues” that appeared when this so-called “unreleased” version began to spread. Unlucky you, Android users: BlackBerry has begun disabling this first app – no matter how legitimate it may seem – and the real version’s release date is again in flux. And the iOS version of BBM? There’ve been some oddities in that release as well. Though some users in places like the iTunes app store for New Zealand were able to download the real-deal iOS version of BBM for iPhone, downloads have been stopped worldwide. The good news for iOS users that did access this app early is that they’ll be able to continue using it (for the time being).

Once the king of the smartphone market, BlackBerry will be laying off up to 40 percent of its workforce, or about 5,000 workers, by year's end, reports The Wall Street Journal. The cuts will come from all divisions of the Waterloo, Ontario-based company, which at last count in March had 12,000 workers. The cuts will be made in waves, with workers from the sales and research- and-development divisions having already received pink slips over the summer. The layoffs are of course a response to how far BlackBerry has fallen in the smartphone market. In just the past two years, BlackBerry's share of the smartphone market has dropped from 14 percent to 3 percent, according to research firm IDC . The report said that the company may even be put up for sale. BlackBerry has tried to restore its standing by releasing two new phone models this year. Both, however, have failed to gain traction. In a statement to the business daily, a BlackBerry spokesman said: "Organizational moves will continue to occur to ensure we have the right people in the right roles to drive new opportunities in mobile computing." The layoffs at BlackBerry are the latest example of what has become an old story -- demanding and shifting tastes in the tech sector can result in workers being left in the dust . As one of countless examples, LivingSocial was forced to layoff 400 workers in 2012 after the social commerce website failed to see its local events and merchant services campaigns thrive. But tech firms including Cisco have been pursuing massive layoffs even during flush times. The San Jose-based tech firm has announced that it will let go of 4,000 of its approximately 65,000 workers in the first quarter of 2014. The move comes even though revenue rose 6 percent year-on-year, as of an August report. Big layoffs, of course, have affected nearly all industries during the financial crisis . And as AOL Jobs reported to mark the five-year anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers, 4 of the 10 employers who have cut the most jobs since 2008 were in the financial sector. In the case of BlackBerry, massive layoffs are by now old hat. Its problems led company CEO Thorsten Heins to lay off 5,000 workers last year after the company posted a $646 million loss. source: jobs.aol.com/articles/2013/09/19/blackberry-layoff-thousands-end-2013/ |
Syria has begun sending details of its chemical weapons as part of a US-Russia brokered deal to make them safe, the chemical arms watchdog has said. The Hague-based OPCW added that it expected more details from Syria in the coming days and had postponed a meeting planned for Sunday. Syria was given a Saturday deadline to give a full list of its chemical arms. The US had threatened military action over a chemical attack in Damascus last month, which the UN called a war crime, reports the BBC. The US, UK and France have accused Syrian government forces of carrying out the attack in the Ghouta district on 21 August, but President Bashar al-Assad has blamed rebel groups. Separately, two Syrian rebel groups have agreed a ceasefire in the northern town of Azaz after two days of fighting that raised fears of a war within a war. Michael Luhan, a spokesman for the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which is responsible for policing the treaty outlawing chemical arms, said Syria's submission was an "initial declaration". Luhan said it was now being examined by the organisation's technical secretariat but he declined to say what was in it. A UN diplomat confirmed to Reuters that details had been submitted, adding: "It's quite long... and being translated." The US-Russia-brokered deal aims to have inspectors on the ground in Syria in November, when they will make an initial assessment and oversee the destruction of certain equipment. The destruction of all of Syria's chemical weapons would then be completed by mid-2014. The core members of the OPCW were expected to vote on the timetable next week. However, the OPCW said in a statement on Friday that a meeting of its executive council scheduled for Sunday had been postponed, without giving a reason. "We will announce the new date and time... as soon as possible," it said. |

Sirkris: I pray there meeting have a fruitful ending.yeah...hopefully, the strike might be called off next week. |
VICE-President Namadi Sambo last night met with the national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in an effort to resolve the lingering strike by the university teachers. This followed the stalemate of the previous negotiations with the Federal Government officials led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF). The ASUU delegation was led by the President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, his two predecessors, Dr. Dipo Fasina, Dr. Abdullahi Sule-Kano and Fagge’s deputy. The government’s delegation was led by the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike with the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Julius Okojie, with Vice Chancellors of Bayero University Kano (BUK), University of Ibadan (UI) and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi, Profs. Abdulrasheed Abubakar, Isaac Adewole and Muhammed Hamisu Muhammed. Both parties were reluctant to discuss the outcome of the meeting, which lasted for more than two hours in the VP’s conference hall. ASUU president who spoke under intense pressure from newsmen said: “We’ve just had a meeting with the Vice President and he has given us a message to our members, and we said that as messengers that we are, we are going to deliver the message faithfully to our members and then they will take the decision.” “I know Nigerians are expecting solution to the strike, we also want a solution, but I have been given a message to our members. The message is not for Nigerians, it is for our members. “If I deliver the message, our principal will decide and we will get back to the Ministry of Education within this week,” Fagge added. Wike explained that the purpose of the meeting was to find a lasting solution to the crisis to ensure that students go back to school. According to him, the parties had a fruitful deliberation. “One is quite hopeful that ASUU is committed, they have the passion and that there is the need for us to move the education sector forward.” Source : www.ngrguardiannews.com/national-news/133310-sambo-takes-over-negotiation-with-ASUU |
