The statement said any such reports were false, and made it clear that Adenuga has never at any time discussed, or met with, any agent linked with the Premier League outfit. "The report linking the name and business of Mike Adenuga to the proposed takeover of Newcastle United is patently false and misleading,” read the statement. “Adenuga is not part of any consortium bidding for Newcastle and he has never met any agent or group concerning the said takeover." AFP in Lagos reports that Adenuga's telephone company is the title sponsor of the Nigerian Premier League and major sponsor of the country's football teams, as well as the sponsor of the annual CAF Awards. "For the avoidance of doubt, Adenuga is at this moment committed to raising the stature of African football. He will continue to support all agencies and stake holders to ensure the continued development and promotion of the game across all levels on the continent,” the statement added. http://www.sportfederation..com |
Nigeria have given John Obi Mikel permission to skip their World Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone on Saturday. Chelsea had asked for the midfielder to be left out in order to allow him to work on his fitness and put himself in contention for the Blues' next Premier League fixture, at Middlesbrough on October 18. And Nigerian team official Emmanuel Attah confirmed Mikel had been excused from the squad for this weekend's match. He said: "The Nigeria Football Federation and Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari have agreed that Mikel skip this game so as to concentrate fully on his club career. "We agreed to this because we want the player to fully establish himself at the club while also improving the working relationship between us and the overseas clubs of our players." http://www.sportfederation..com |
I AM HAPPY AT CHEALSEA SAID MIKEL. John Mikel Obi insists he made the right choice to choose Chelsea over Manchester United - and the midfielder now has sights on his first Premier League title. Mikel, 21, was at the centre of an ugly tug-of-war between the two clubs and was pictured with a United shirt until the matter was resolved, at the cost of around £16million, and he made his Chelsea debut two years ago. http://www.sportfederation..com |
Nomar Garciaparra's three-run homer highlighted a six-run opening inning, and the Dodgers moved closer to the NL West title with a 10-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. Manny Ramirez added a two-run double in the first, and Chad Billingsley threw six strong innings and knocked in two runs, as Los Angeles trimmed its magic number to three for winning the division. LA's lead increased to three games over Arizona, which lost 7-4 at St. Louis Tuesday night. Billingsley (16-10) scattered nine hits and allowed just one run to win his fourth straight decision. "Coming out and scoring six runs early allowed me to relax and get my rhythm back," said Billingsley. "I felt good about the victory, but my off-speed wasn't that sharp. http://www.sportfederation.blogsport.com |
Roger Federer's Switzerland will travel to the USA in the first round of the 2009 Davis Cup. That was the marquee tie which came out in Tuesday's draw in Madrid. Federer, who has already committed to playing in next year's first round following a date change in the 2009 calendar, is likely to come up against Andy Roddick, the regular leader of the US team, who won the trophy in 2007. The other stand-out tie sees Spain host Serbia, a clash which is likely to see world number one Rafael Nadal square off against Novak Djokovic, currently ranked third. Argentina, who will play Spain in the final of this year's tournament in November, have what appears to be an easy start in 2009. They will host the Netherlands. Other matches see the Czech Republic take on France, Croatia entertain Chile, Sweden meet Israel, Germany host Austria and Romania trackle Russia. The first-round ties will be played from March 6-8. http://www.sportfederation..com. |
The Football League have confirmed that there is no prospect of the Coca-Cola Championship clash between Watford and Reading being replayed. Linesman Nigel Bannister flagged for a goal instead of a corner after the ball crossed the goal-line wide of the goal, following a challenge involving John Eustace and Royals striker Noel Hunt. Despite not a single Reading player appealing for the 'goal' 25-year-old referee Stuart Attwell gave Steve Coppell's men a 1-0 lead. The match eventually finished 2-2 and, after reviewing the evidence, the Professional Game Match Officials board have admitted that it was "an error of judgment." Royals manager Steve Coppell offered to replay the game if required but Andy Williamson, the League's Chief Operating Officer, insisted that Attwell's decision must remain final. He said: "The Laws of the Game give no discretion in these matters - the referee's decision regarding whether a goal is scored or not is final and binding. "Given this explicit position, the League cannot intervene". Coppell had earlier told the club's official website www.readingfc.co.uk: "If the authorities decide a replay is the correct thing to do then I've got no objections whatsoever. "I'm not sure there's a precedent but if that's what people decide then I am quite happy to do it. "We don't want to be seen to be taking advantage of anything. "I have sympathy with Watford and I really don't know what to say to make it right. "But if the Football League phone me now and say something was definitely wrong I'm happy to go along with it." http://www.sportfederation..com |
man u warns chealsea Sir Alex Ferguson warned that Chelsea will see the real Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday despite another lacklustre display, against Villarreal in the Champions League last night. Even the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo as a 62nd-minute substitute could not inspire United to victory as they toiled to a goalless draw against the Spanish side at Old Trafford. Arsenal drew, too, 1-1 in Kiev after a late equaliser from skipper William Gallas. United boss Ferguson, whose team are already six points behind Chelsea in the Premier League, said: ‘There were plus points and we should have won on the chances we created, but we will improve on this. 'We are a bit short in terms of sharpness but the games will bring that on.’ Ronaldo, who went close with a header, was given a thunderous ovation by the United fans. Ferguson added: ‘He has had a turbulent summer but he has shown great loyalty for five years. ‘It’s important for him to realise what a great club he is at and how important he is to the supporters and how important they are to him.’ http://www.sportfederation.blogsport.com |

GALLAS RESCUE ARSENAL Arsenal captain William Gallas bundled in a late equaliser to rescue a point in their opening Champions League Group G game against Dynamo Kiev in the Ukraine last night. Emmanuel Adebayor, Robin van Persie, twice, and Cesc Fabregas all had good first-half chances for the north London club, who have still yet to win a European tie in the former Soviet Union. Kiev looked to have made them pay a heavy price when, on 64 minutes, Bacary Sagna was adjudged to have pushed over Ognjen Vukojevic and Ismael Bangoura scored from the penalty spot. Then, as full-time loomed, Gallas – who had made a mistake in the build-up to the goal – netted at close range from a low cross by Theo Walcott. Arsène Wenger felt there should have been more time for his men to go on and win the tie. The Arsenal manager confronted the referee following the final whistle, which he believed came too soon. "I wanted to understand how we played only three minutes of injury-time, and then only had one minute," said Wenger. "It looks like through inspiration of the referee, and he could not explain it. He just said it was enough. "When he got to 1-1, there was no game any more. We were on top, they looked very tired, but the game was finished because of the interruptions for injuries and stoppages. You could feel the game was there for the taking, but we had no more opportunity to play." Only a small pocket of 150 or so Arsenal supporters, mainly from Russian or Ukrainian fan clubs, were present in the 17,000-strong crowd, yet they almost had something to celebrate inside two minutes. Van Persie got in down the right channel from Walcott's pass, but his low angled shot was saved at the near post by Stanislav Bogush. Dynamo soon settled and began to build a sustained period of pressure yet Arsenal continued to look dangerous on the break. In the 19th minute, Adebayor capitalised on poor control by Roman Eremenko and sprinted into the Dynamo penalty area but the Togo striker sent his shot wide. As half-time approached, Van Persie rifled the ball into the side netting following good work from full-back Sagna down the right. Arsenal then carved out an even better chance when Adebayor fed Van Persie with a ball across goal that he cut back for Fabregas who could only manage a tame shot straight at the 'keeper from six yards. At the start of the second half, Kiev almost snatched the lead when Eremenko got clear down the right and cut inside Gallas. Manuel Almunia, the Arsenal goalkeeper, got enough of a fingertip to his shot to deflect it off the inside post and was able to regather. A mistake by Gallas allowed Bangoura to get away down the right. Although Arsenal tracked back, the ball was eventually played into the penalty area where Vukojevic went down under pressure from Sagna – the referee had seen enough contact to immediately point to the penalty spot as well as brandish a yellow card. Guinea international Bangoura sent Almunia the wrong way and, after 64 minutes, turn the match in favour of the hosts. The Arsenal side were now chasing a game they should have already wrapped up following their first-half dominance and it took Gallas's late intervention to rescue the visitors. "It was really hard," said the Frenchman. "When you see you can win the game it is normal to be disappointed. I'm very disappointed, like the players and the manager." Dynamo Kiev (4-5-1): Bogush; Nesmachniy, Mikhalik, Diakhate, Betao; Yussuf (Asatiani, 90), Vukojevic, Ninkovic, Aliev, Eremenko; Bangoura (Kravets, 90). Substitutes not used: Shovkovskiy, Ghioane, Morozyuk, Shatskikh, Romanchuk, Asatiani. Arsenal (4-4-2): Almunia; Clichy, Gallas, Touré, Sagna (Eboué, 78); Denilson, Song (Bendtner, 70), Fabregas, Walcott; Adebayor, Van Persie (Vela, 83). Substitutes not used: Fabianski, Ramsey, Wilshere, Djourou. Referee: L Cantalejo (Spain). Two goals in two minutes from Argentines Lisandro Lopez and Lucho Gonzalez helped Porto to a 3-1 win over Fenerbahce in the other Group G game last night. Arsenal's remaining group stage fixtures: 30 Sept: Porto (h); 21 Oct: Fenerbahce (a); 5 Nov: Fenerbahce (h); 25 Nov: Dynamo Kiev (h); 10 Dec: Porto (a). http://sportfederation.blogsport.com. |

BLATTER IS CONVINCE IN SOUTH AFRICA. FIFA president Sepp Blatter's visit to South Africa began with a meeting between him and the country's president, Thabo Mbeki. An encouraged Blatter said on Sunday that he has full confidence in South Africa's ability to host a successful World Cup, adding that there was no 2010 'plan B'. “The plan B is South Africa and the plan C is South Africa,” Blatter told a media briefing after the meeting with President Thabo Mbeki in Pretoria. “We are informed and monitoring all the work and we have no doubt that when it comes to stadia, when it comes to the logistical organization, that everything will be done.” Safe as Houses Blatter arrived on Sunday ahead of a four-day FIFA delegation trip around South Africa to inspect venues and meet political leaders, including former president Nelson Mandela. The FIFA president believed that the cup would give South Africa, which has a high level of crime, the status of being identified as a safe country. He continued, “Most of the criticism now is that it is not secure but you go to big cities anywhere in the world tell me where you have 100 security? It does not exist.” Both Blatter and Mbeki agreed that a change of government in next year's elections would not affect World Cup preparations. “I'm saying quite firmly that we are on course with regard to meeting our obligations,” Mbeki said, adding, “It doesn't matter what happens here with regard to political challenges, this country will meet its commitments to FIFA to ensure that we have a very successful 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. That will happen.” Blatter has pushed hard to get an African team to host the World Cup, and South Africa are showing their commitment and progress in return. “A World Cup in South Africa would show that Africans are able to host the FIFA event,” said Blatter. “It is justice to South Africa for what Africa has given to the world of football,” concluded the head of world football's governing body. http://www.sportfederation..com. |
