Nairaland GeneralWoman Jailed For Driving In Saudi Arabia, Loses Job, Marriage, Child Custody by donzubby(op): 4:51pm On Jul 08, 2017
Manal Al-Sharif

A women’s rights activist who was jailed after she bravely defied Saudi Arabia’s female driving ban has opened up about her ordeal.

Manal Al-Sharif, who now lives in Sydney, spent nine days behind bars after being charged with ‘driving while female’ after she uploaded a YouTube video of herself travelling through the streets of Khobar in May 2011.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world that forbids women from driving; but the ban did not deter the now 38-year-old from taking control over her life.

However, the protest that gained global attention came with consequences — she lost custody of her then five-year-old son, now aged 11.

“I was jailed because I challenged the ban.

“I lost custody of my son, my job and my home (marriage), but I just have to accept the consequences; otherwise, women don’t move forward.

“I’ve done a lot of things in my life I regret, but I didn’t choose to be arrested for driving. I was tired of accepting these awkward rules, so I wanted to prove a point,” she said.

Ms Al-Sharif found herself serving time in prison for nine days in 2011.

“I just couldn’t believe the charges laid against me. I was charged with ‘driving while female.’ I was put in jail with criminals.

“I remember the prison guard asking me why I was there. She just couldn’t believe they put me in jail for driving,” she told the Daily Mail.

The young mother said she was faced with relentless backlash after the video attracted more than 700,000 views within 24 hours.

“The video was trending inside Saudi Arabia. I was getting phone calls; my family was receiving death threats and more girls were being discouraged to go out.

“Driving a car as a woman, you really stir the whole country. I was called a LovePeddler; and people accused me of corrupting Muslims. They called me all kinds of names.

“People were calling me crazy and saying I should be locked up in a mental hospital,” she recalled.

But despite holding a driver’s license, Ms Al-Sharif said women were still not allowed to drive simply because they were ‘legally minors’ in the country.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a highly educated woman, you still need a male guardian to give you permission to do things,” she explained.

“The main challenge is women are treated like minors. Once you reach 18, you own your life, no one should own your life. But in Saudi Arabia, (adult) women are still considered as a minor.

She explained that Saudi women were depicted as ‘queens’ so they were ‘protected by the kingdom of men’.

“That’s why we can’t drive because we need male guidance to do anything on our behalf,” she explained.

“I come from a very private society where we live in closed windows, high walls and women are covered up. It’s very difficult for girls and women in Saudi Arabia to do anything without the permission from a male guardian.”

Ms Al-Sharif explained that when she got married to her second husband, she needed to get permission from her father and a ‘special permission from the government’ because she wasn’t allowed to marry a non-Saudi man.

“Until this day, I still didn’t get the second permission,” she said.

“We couldn’t get married in Dubai either, because I wasn’t allowed to marry a non-Saudi without permission. We had to go through a civil marriage from a law court in Canada.”

Ms Al-Sharif has recently published her memoir called Daring To Drive, in which she writes: “I’m proud of my face. I will not cover it.

“If it bothers you, don’t look. If you are seduced by merely looking at it, that is your problem.

“You cannot punish me because you cannot control yourself.”
CrimeProtest On Benin-ore Road As Robbers Kill Pregnant Woman by donzubby(op): 11:33am On Jul 08, 2017
Commercial bus drivers on Friday staged a protest on the Benin-Ore Expressway over the killing of a pregnant woman by suspected armed robbers at Okada, in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The robbers also reportedly killed a male passenger of a popular bus company and injured others during the attack.

Commuters using the busy road were said to have been stranded for several hours as luxurious bus drivers barricaded the road to express their grievances.

The latest attack came five weeks after armed robbers reportedly killed a middle-aged man and dispossessed several passengers of their belongings on the same road.

It was gathered that Friday’s attack left a driver and his conductor with bullet wounds before they were rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

It was also learnt that the incident temporarily affected the distribution of major newspapers across the state.

Some of the national dailies said to have been affected include The Sun, Nigerian Tribune, Daily Independent, The Guardian and BusinessDay.

Many of them were said to have arrived in Benin at about 2:20 pm, when the protest had ended.

A driver with Complete Sports Newspaper, Mr. Sulaman Tajudeen, said the protesters had insisted that they would not remove the barricades until the state government took urgent steps to prevent attacks on the road.

The spokesman for the state police command, Mr. Moses Nkombe, could not be reached for comments as several calls put across to him did not connect.

However, it was gathered that while the remains of the deceased had been deposited in a mortuary, those injured were in stable condition.

A source said that doctors at the hospital had demanded the sum of N35, 000 to commence treatment, an amount that was said to have been donated by some of the stranded passengers.

The source said, “The union (bus drivers) immediately swung into action by asking stranded passengers and transporters to contribute money to foot their hospital bills, which the passengers all sympathetically did.

“The union, having been satisfied with the response got from the commuters and other drivers, decided that the road should be cleared for vehicular movement.”
Nairaland GeneralICYMI: Mistaken For Badoo Cultist, I Nearly Lost My Life —ikorodu Resident by donzubby(op): 6:50am On Jul 08, 2017
A resident of Ikorodu area of Lagos, Mr. Akinrinlade Ayodeji, has narrated how he narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob that had mistaken him for a member of the reprehensible cult, Badoo, which has been suspected of killing over 30 persons in the last 12 months.

In a Facebook post, Ayodeji described how a simple act of going to fetch water at 7.30pm a few houses from his residence nearly cost him his life, as the residents had mistaken a jerry can of water he was carrying for engine oil, said to be one of the identifying tags of the Badoo cultists.

Entitled, ‘Ikorodu’s Badoo brouhaha: My story,’ Ayodeji said that on Monday, July 3, he had returned home from work at about 5:21pm, and had taken a nap which lasted till 7:39pm.

On waking up, he discovered that he had no water, and decided to go get some water at a nearby tank.

To his surprise, he said, someone accosted him, demanding to know what he was doing in the streets at that hour of the day, with a jerry can.

“Hey hey! What are you coming here to do at this time?” Someone asked him; to which he said he replied, “Sorry sir, I am actually here to fetch some water.”

The person questioning him was rather uninterested in whatever explanation Ayodeji had, and dealt him a slap across the face.

He wrote: “Before I could finish explaining myself, I saw a very furious man and decided to just turn back to my house. But before I could take three steps forward, I just felt a big and several bangs on my face through the back.

“At this point, I was lost, wondering if the world was ending today.

“Immediately, I saw people gathered, asking in Yoruba, ‘Ki lo de, ki lo sele? (what happened, what’s going on).”

Unlike the gruesome fate that befell Chinedu, allegedly a comedian, who was lynched by a mob in Ikorodu last weekend on the suspicion that he and two other victims were Badoo cult members, Ayodeji had a distinct fortune of being identified by his neighbours, effectively saving him from being beaten to a coma and then roasted alive.

“To cut the long story short, people attested that they know me, even asking the said baba (his assailant), ‘Don’t you know him?’

“They all apologised after several slaps and molestation initially, then I just carried my gallon that someone else had helped fill with water, obviously out of pity, then walked towards my house, entered my room, put off my already tattered cloth, sat down and started imagining what just happened, hoping it was just a dream, behold, it wasn’t, it was real!” the obviously shaken Ayodeji wrote.

He added that a few minutes later while he was still busy pondering about what had just happened, he heard some voices at the entrance to his apartment.

When he opened the door, four elderly men that he suspected were landlords, alongside the man that had raised the false alarm and one of his neighbours, expressed deep apologies for what had just happened.

“They all said they were sorry for the ugly incident, with the man that punished me particularly holding me tight, just to show his level remorse.

“I almost shed tears at that point, but I had to be a man. I told them to take things easy, that two wrongs can never make a right,” Ayodeji wrote.

He confessed that though he told them that he was okay, the beating he received was severe, as several people slapped him repeatedly all at once, until someone identified him as a resident.

He recalled that his awful experience was reminiscent of that of a friend of his who was lynched by a mob last Sunday at Odongunyan, when the individual was suspected of being a Badoo cult member.

Reports say Badoo cult gangs rub engine oil on their bodies whenever they go for ‘operations.’

They are said to break their victims’ heads with grinding stone or pestle, while they rape female victims.

On one occasion, they were alleged to have fled with a baby after they had reportedly killed the parents and siblings.

They are also said to use white handkerchiefs to collect blood of their victims.

News has it that members of the Badoo cult invade homes in the dead of the night, during which they attack mainly families, killing everyone during each attack.

Odua Peoples Congress leader, Gani Adams, claimed that reports available to his group indicated that the cultists get paid between N250,000 and N1,000,000 for each blood-soaked handkerchief submitted to their sponsors.

Adams added that OPC was aware that “influential members of the society” were responsible for sponsoring the attacks.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has charged traditional rulers in Ikorodu to “wake up from their slumber by helping the government to nip in the bud the rising wave of kidnapping and the Badoo menace in the state.”
