Science/TechnologyHTC Unveils New Vive Pro 2 With 5K Resolution Display And 120hz Refresh Rate by dorianhall(op): 11:28pm On May 14, 2021
HTC has unveiled the new Vive Pro 2, an update to its high-end virtual reality headset that adds a host of small but worthwhile improvements.

The biggest change is the new display, which now offers 5K resolution (or 2448 × 2448 pixels per eye), 120Hz refresh rate, and a 120-degree field of view. That’s a decent step up from the original Vive Pro, released in 2018, which had a 2880 x 1600 resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, and 110-degree field of view. The new Vive Pro 2 also supports Display Stream Compression, or DSC, a first in a VR headset. DSC is a visually lossless standard most frequently seen in high-end monitors.

As a result of all this, HTC says the Vive Pro 2 delivers “minimal motion blur.” The company also claims that the meshed lines noticeable in many older VR headsets, commonly known as the screen door effect, have been “virtually eliminated” — although these have vastly improved in other newer devices like the Oculus Quest 2 and HP Reverb G2, too.

Display aside, the Vive Pro 2 has the usual ergonomic features of high-end headsets, including adjustable straps, quick-adjust sizing dials, and adjustable interpupillary distance (IPD). The integrated headphones are Hi-Res Audio Certified with 3D spatial sound, and the headset also works with third-party headphones. The new Vive Pro 2 will also work with all Vive SteamVR accessories, including Vive trackers, the new Vive Facial Tracker, and any SteamVR controllers and other accessories.

Design-wise, the renders make the new Vive Pro 2 look a little sleeker and more compact than its predecessor. Though we’ve not yet received weight or dimensions of the new headset nor seen it in person to actually compare.

If you’re upgrading from the original Vive Pro, HTC is running a special promotion during the preorder period, selling the headset on its own (without controllers or external trackers) for $749 / £659 / €739. Once that promotion ends, the price for the standalone headset will be $799 / £719 / €799. A fully kitted-out Pro 2, including Base Station 2.0 and controllers, will be available to buy from June 4th for $1,399 / £1,299 / €1,399.

Science/TechnologyBose Gets Into Hearing Aid Business With New Fda-cleared Soundcontrol Hearing Ai by dorianhall(op): 11:23pm On May 14, 2021
Bose announced today that it will begin selling direct-to-consumer SoundControl hearing aids for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss on May 18th. They’ll cost $849.95 and will be sold directly by Bose in five states — Massachusetts, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas — before they’re available nationally.

The hearing aids are meant to be fit and controlled by the wearer without needing to see an audiologist for a hearing test and professional fitting. They use standard hearing aid batteries that Bose says will last up to four days if used 14 hours a day. Volume, treble and bass, and modes for different listening environments can be adjusted and preset in the Bose Hear app on iOS or Android. There’s a “Focus” feature with different settings, including a “Front” setting for filtering noise in busy rooms and an “Everywhere” setting that allows all sounds during walks outside or around the house.

“In the United States alone, approximately 48 million people suffer from some degree of hearing loss that interferes with their life. But the cost and complexity of treatment have become major barriers to getting help,” said Brian Maguire, category director of Bose Hear, in the press release.

Prescription hearing aids can cost several thousand dollars and are rarely fully covered by insurance. Less costly personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) are sold in stores, but they aren’t as effective or adjustable as hearing aids and aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The SoundControl hearing aids are the first to be authorized by the FDA for use without assistance from a health care provider.

An older design for Bose hearing aids with “self-fitting technology” was cleared by the FDA through De Novo classification in 2018, meaning it’s a low-risk product, and there are no direct-to-consumer devices like it on the market. That design had a neckband and a rechargeable battery like Bose’s Hearphones, a hearing amplifier that was discontinued last year. The new design looks more like traditional hearing aids, with a receiver behind the ear and a small tip that sits in the ear canal, and was cleared by the FDA last week based on substantial equivalence to the 2018 De Novo authorization.

Science/TechnologyMicrosoft Working On In-house Chip To Replace Intel Processors On Surface Laptop by dorianhall(op): 5:42pm On Dec 20, 2020
Microsoft is chipping away at in-house processor plans for use in worker PCs that run the organization's cloud administrations, adding to an industrywide exertion to lessen dependence on Intel's chip innovation.

The world's biggest programming producer is utilizing Arm plans to create a processor that will be utilized in its server farms, as per individuals acquainted with the plans. It's likewise investigating utilizing another chip that would control a portion of its Surface line of PCs. Individuals asked not to be distinguished examining private activities. Intel's stock dropped 6.3 percent to close at $47.46 (generally Rs. 3,500) in New York, leaving it down 21 percent this year.

The move is a significant responsibility by Microsoft to providing itself with the main bit of the equipment it employments. Distributed computing opponents, for example, Amazon are as of now well not far off with comparable endeavors. They've contended their chips are more qualified to a portion of their requirements, bringing cost and execution focal points over off-the-rack silicon principally gave by Intel.

Microsoft's endeavors are bound to bring about a worker chip than one for its Surface gadgets, however the last is conceivable, said one of the individuals. The organization's chip plan unit reports to Jason Zander, top of the Azure cloud business, as opposed to Panos Panay, who directs Surface items. Delegates of Microsoft and Arm declined to remark on whether Microsoft is chipping away at worker and PC processors.

"Since silicon is a fundamental structure block for innovation, we're proceeding to put resources into our own capacities in territories like plan, assembling and devices, while additionally encouraging and fortifying associations with a wide scope of chip suppliers," Microsoft representative Frank Shaw said.

Microsoft has ventured up employing of processor engineers lately, enrolling in the patio of chipmakers, for example, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices, Nvidia and among those cut afloat when Qualcomm surrendered its worker chip endeavors.

AMD is the second-biggest producer of chips that run PCs and it's been organizing a rebound in the worker market subsequent to being generally closed out by Intel for the majority of the most recent decade. AMD stock declined 1 percent on Friday. Xilinx, another chipmaker that AMD is procuring, slipped 1.8 percent.

Intel's Xeon scope of worker chips at present force the vast majority of the hardware at the core of the web and corporate organizations, producing the organization's most beneficial wellspring of income. It actually has around 90% of this market, regardless of late gains by AMD. Some Xeon models cost as much as a minimized vehicle.

"The mind blowing interest for figuring energized by new remaining burdens like AI is driving more silicon experimentation in the cloud. Expanding on many years of x86 environment development, we are focused on giving clients the world's best CPUs and new items from GPUs to AI chips," Intel said in a proclamation. "In this extending market, we hope to pick up offer in numerous territories like AI preparing, 5G organizations, designs and self-ruling driving."

Clients, for example, Microsoft have progressively gone to elective answers for sort out the heap of information that distributed computing and cell phones create. The selection of computerized reasoning to mechanize that cycle has started a surge of new chip plans. The greatest worry for proprietors of the monster server farms behind administrations like Office 365 has gotten the expense of giving power to their developing equipment impression. Arm-based chips are frequently more energy effective.

On the off chance that Microsoft pushes forward with its own chip for PCs it will be after Apple which is moving its whole Mac line away from Intel processors. While neither Apple nor Microsoft gadgets own huge lumps of the PC market, their contributions are situated as top notch items with slicker plans and further developed capacities. While declaring its first new Macs dependent on the M1 chip, Apple promoted the exhibition help contrasted with standard PCs.

Microsoft at present uses Arm-based chips from Qualcomm in a portion of its Surface PCs. It ported Windows to deal with these kinds of chips, which have normally been utilized in cell phones. Apple additionally utilizes Arm innovation in its processors. Other Surface models use Intel chips.

ComputersMicrosoft Details Quiet Notifications In Microsoft Edge Browser by dorianhall(op): 10:22pm On Jul 27, 2020
Website notifications have become very common these days, and while some are pretty useful, others only bombard you with prompts right after the site loads in the browser.

And Microsoft, who is now fully committed to making Microsoft Edge one of the best browsers around, says this is quite a problem, as notifications are an essential part of the browsing experience.

The software giant says it has reached out directly to users to figure out how to improve notifications in Microsoft Edge, and what it found out was that abusive prompts need to be blocked from the get-go.

“These users were typically bothered if they couldn’t understand the value of notifications from a given site, or if the prompt appeared immediately upon visiting the site. However, many of these same users want or even depend upon notifications from a site that’s important to them: for example, meeting alerts from a calendar web app or updates from their favorite media subscriptions,” Microsoft says.

This is why the most recent version of Microsoft Edge (version 84 available since mid-July on all supported platforms) introduces a new concept called quiet notification requests.

Also available in other Chromium browsers, this feature essentially blocks the flyout prompt that shows up on websites offering notifications.

Instead, you’re now getting a small bell icon in the address bar that indicates a website is offering notifications, so you can just click that icon to activate them.

Microsoft has enabled this feature for everyone updating to the latest version of the browser, simply because it wants to put users in control of notifications during their browsing experience.

“This treatment reduces the prominence of notification requests so the user can stay focused on their current task, but keeps the request at a noticeable location in the UI. If the user wants to subscribe to notifications, they can click the “Notifications blocked” bell icon and accept the request,” Microsoft says.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean that blocking all notification requests from the very beginning is the right way to go, and Microsoft knows this very well. And it’s all because users still want to get notifications from specific websites and blocking them could actually mean missing on some prompts.

This is why the software giant is already working on improving the whole thing in the future versions of the browser.

“As we found in our user research, however, there are some scenarios where notification requests are particularly welcome and may warrant the full prompt. We’re currently exploring turning on the full flyout prompt when data suggests users find a given site’s notification request valuable. Users would be able to keep the quiet notification requests experience for all sites if they prefer. Stay tuned for updates!” the company says.

Additionally, Microsoft is also providing a series of tips for developers in order to make the notification experience less intrusive, and one of the bits of advice is to just avoid displaying the prompt once the site loads. In such cases, users don’t even know if enabling notifications is worth it or not, especially if this is the first time they are visiting the website.

All these changes are not exclusive to Windows 10 but are part of Microsoft Edge on all platforms where the browser is available. The migration to Chromium allowed Edge to become a cross-platform offering, so it’s now up for grabs on Windows 10 (where it’s also the new default browser after it replaced the legacy version of Edge), on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and macOS. A Linux version of Edge is also in the works, and it should go live as a preview by the end of the year.

ComputersMicrosoft To Automatically Update More Computers To Windows 10 Version 2004 by dorianhall(op): 10:12pm On Jul 27, 2020
Windows 10 version 2004, or the May 2020 Update, is rolling out in stages across the world, and after Microsoft originally offered this release as a manual download for those checking for updates in Windows Update, the company more recently started the automatic rollout to a small set of devices.

Only computers running Windows 10 version 1903 and version 1909 are included in this automatic rollout of the May 2020 Update, and now Microsoft says that its strategy is advancing as planned.

In other words, the company is ready to offer the May update as an automatic download to more devices running Windows 10 version 1903 and 1909, as announced this week.

“Windows 10, version 2004 is available for users with devices running Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909, who manually seek to “Check for updates” via Windows Update. We are now starting a new phase in our rollout. Using the machine learning-based (ML-based) training we have done so far, we are increasing the number of devices selected to update automatically to Windows 10, version 2004 that are approaching end of service. We will continue to train our machine learning through all phases to intelligently rollout new versions of Windows 10 and deliver a smooth update experience. The recommended servicing status is Semi-Annual Channel,” Microsoft says.
Pausing the update

What this means is that those who are running Windows 10 version 1903 or version 1909 should be offered the update to version 2004 automatically via Windows Update without the need for manually checking for updates in Windows Update.

The whole thing will be carried out by Windows Update, so the only action that will be required on your side is a system reboot to complete the update.

Those who want to block the update can pause updates on Windows Update to prevent the May update from installing on their devices.

WebmastersGoogle Will Finally Install Google Chrome In The Right Place On Windows by dorianhall(op): 8:38pm On Jun 27, 2020
Google has recently started the work on resolving another Google Chrome annoyance, and while this isn’t necessarily related to a new feature, it’s still big news for Windows users.

Right now, if you install the 64-bit version of the browser on Windows, the application stores some of its data in the x86 version of the program files folder on the operating system. For example, I’m running Chrome 64-bit on Windows 10 right now, and this is the default location where the browser was installed:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome
So despite being a 64-bit browser, it still puts its files in the x86 folder, something that makes no sense these days. And by the looks of things, it didn’t make any sense in 2014 either, as this is a problem that was first reported six years ago on the Chromium Bugs tracker.
Six-year-old problem

A Chromium engineer said in 2014 this is exactly how they designed the browser but promised some changes in this regard at some point in the future.

“This is intentional for now. Future work will be done to move Chrome to the 64-bit Program Files folder,” they posted in the same bug report.

Fast forward six years later and here’s Google finally working on resolving the whole thing. As discovered by TechDows, Google Chrome 64-bit will install in the correct place beginning with a future update. This means some files will be stored at:
C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome
However, it looks like only new installations will go to this path, so if you’re already running Chrome, you must remove it and then reinstall the browser to have all files moved to the correct folder.

There’s still no ETA as to when the whole change is supposed to happen, but for now, the good thing is that it took Google only six years to put Chrome’s files in the correct place on Windows.
WebmastersWhy Windows 10 Version 2004 Comes Without Update Deferral Options by dorianhall(op): 12:46pm On Jun 27, 2020
Windows 10 version 2004 is now available for the first waves of devices, and the more people try it out, the more changes under the hood are actually discovered.

More recently, many users spotted that Windows 10 version 2004 ships without a feature that many actually enjoyed in the previous feature updates.

Deferring feature updates is no longer possible from Windows Update, as the option is no longer there.

And of course, many believe this is something that Microsoft has turned to in order to improve the adoption of its latest Windows 10 version.

In reality, however, Microsoft says it did the whole thing with a simple goal in mind: make the experience overall more straightforward for everyone.

The feature update deferral option allows users to push back the installation of a new feature update for as much as 365 days. In other words, when new feature updates were releases, users could just delay the installation by up to one year.

Beginning with Windows 10 version 2004, the option is no longer there, and Microsoft explains that it’s all because of the automatic push of new feature updates that only happens on devices running OS versions that approach the end of support.

“Update less: Last year, we changed update installation policies for Windows 10 to only target devices running a feature update version that is nearing end of service. As a result, many devices are only updating once a year. To enable all devices to make the most of this policy change, and to prevent confusion, we have removed deferrals from the Windows Update settings Advanced Options page starting on Windows 10, version 2004,” Microsoft says.

Living proof in this regard is the rollout of Windows 10 version 2004. Microsoft started the rollout by offering the May update as a manual download for those who clicked the check for updates button in Windows Update.

Shortly after that, however, the company started the automatic update for devices running Windows 10 version 1809, which is the next OS feature update that’s supposed to reach the end of support. So Microsoft only wants to make sure that Windows 10 devices are running a supported version of Windows 10, and the automatic update is supposed to help complete this this by the time the end of support is reached in November.

Now that the deferral option is removed, Microsoft says that IT admins can turn to group policies to configure such a feature if they really need it.

“If you wish to continue leveraging deferrals, you can use local Group Policy (Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business > Select when Preview builds and Feature Updates are received or Select when Quality Updates are received),” the company explains.

What’s important to know is that the automatic rollout of Windows 10 version 2004 to all devices hasn’t yet started. Microsoft is expected to announce general availability for Windows 10 version 2004 later this summer, albeit the company uses a very cautious approach to make sure that everything is running according to the plan.

If any bugs are discovered during its phased rollout, the company can suspend the release for specific sets of devices that might be impacted. This is made with safeguard holds that are announced every time new issues are found, with Microsoft then working on fixes and lifting the blocks when patches are released. The company doesn’t recommend updating to version 2004 using other methods when safeguard holds are in place.
