In chains, Batrven knelt down bare chested in the cold room, with all the five guardians seated around him, their seats more grand than the Emperor of Hirajj's, more adorned that the Queen of Illians' and more Glorious than the Golden throne itself.
He thought he had escaped them. He was a fool.
He was distraught.
They had removed him from his life and made him a creature out of a story, telling him he was the light to smother the darkness that comes. He had believed them. And worked hard. Until he found out it was all for nothing, he was not the one that was meant for the world, he was not clean enough,he was tainted, so they said.
He had immediately gone into oblivion trying to wash away the grief.
But somehow they had brought him back here.
Not as a lost lamb.
But in chains.
He had trusted them.
But they had betrayed his trust.
The Five Guardians of Jdaa.
They had doomed him.
And he was helpless.
He couldn't have done anything. Against not one but all five of the most powerful beings in existence.
He thought back on his life, he had always wanted adventure, this had been what his spirit craved for when he lived back in Xudtur, when he still lived under the wings of his father. If he had known.
Their discussion was nothing more than a silent murmur to him. He didn't need to hear them.
It would serve no purpose. They were most likely discussing the next thing that would be done to him.
This was not right, these people had been pulling the strings of his life for quite sometime, sometime too long and he couldn't have done a thing.
Like a puppet pulled by the strings of a puppet master.
Now the worst had happened.
His flame had been exhausted, the flame of his magic.
HE had tasted the joy of his power, now it had been forcefully pulled from him.
It was like the sorrow of the loss of one's soul mate. NO, that couldn't be compared to it.
He could feel the sorrow deep in him, he could feel the emptiness in his mind.
The flame had always in a way lit up his mind, making everything clearer, his understanding more deep, finally enabling him to manipulate reality, not like making him change all things to his will. His power was more subtle. He couldn't start to explain the feeling, now it was all gone. His flame snuffed out leaving darkness.
Darkness.
Darkness creeping up to him.
Darkness moving in a slow and steady pace.
The Darkness he had always dealt with in a private battle In his mind.
Darkness that struggled to overwhelm him.
Darkness.
He had always been aware of the little part of his mind that held that single darkness.
The prison he had created in his mind to tame the shadow, lest it overcome him.
But now his mind has been shattered, he could no longer control the several partitions of his mind.
The Darkness was free.
Darkness in his mind, wrapping up his soul.
Suffocating him.
Threatening to overcome his mind.
Tightening in his lungs.
He gasped for breath.
He couldn't find it.
He panicked, his heart was racing.
He tried to scream, but he couldn't control his body.
The darkness wrapped around his being, he could not see, he could not hear.
HE was cut off from the world.
All the while his mind was shrinking under the assault of the darkness, still his lung was tightening.
He needed to do something. His thoughts were racing.
Pain. Pain he could not comprehend, every where around him.
Torment from the pits of hell itself.
He calmed himself.
How he did it he could not explain,
He was aware of the anguish that the darkness assaulted him with. BUt..
But underneath, he could feel the little weakness of the shadows, a little opening.
HE lashed out all his will towards it. The act was more of instinct than choice.
The shadow resisted, he knew that somehow if he could pass that simple opening he was free.
Free from what?, the shadows or the Guardians.
Wasn't it better if he died here, If it all ended.
He relaxed his will.
HE tried to remember his brother, Bes.
Someone else came to mind.
Caldutse.
What could he say about her?.
What could he call her?.
Nothing.
The way he world seemed to slow down when he saw her.
The way his heart sped up at the smell of her perfume.
The way the world suddenly seemed to be a better place after talking to her.
Her deep blue eyes, her long dark hair.
Her spirit, the spirit that never backed down.
Caldutse.d
The only thing he could say was that HE loved her.
That was the first time he had ever admitted it to himself.
That one thought gave him strength, he needed to live for her, he needed to tell her how he felt.
With renewed strength he lashed out towards the darkness.
The darkness shattered.
The tightening in his lungs vanished as he drew a breath. The sweet breath of life.
For that one moment he had forgotten about the Guardians and his current peril.
But now he could feel something, something like an awareness.
He could feel it in his gut, he could see it. he could smell it, yet not quite, like a sixth sense. The Awareness of Darkness, he could see the single thread of life that made up the soul, the corner stone of life. That single flashing white light. HE saw them all.
All the twelve threads.
He could understand them now, their motives, their drives, their thoughts. All of it.
Somehow this knowledge completed him.
HE knew this was what he had been searching for.
This was a different type of magic.
This was one half of the magic that founded the world.
All the pains he felt a minute ago vanished.
Somehow he knew all the the injuries on his body were gone, leaving not so much as a scar.
A wave of realization rushed through him.
HE finally understood.
HE smiled.
He stood to his feet.

Thainemon looked at the pitiful boy kneeling in the middle, in chains like a wild beast, well that was what the boy was. True the boy had potential, he could have been one of the strongest men alive, probably strong enough to match a guardian. But the boy didn't listen to his betters. What had he expected?, to be left to roam the world after knowing almost half of the secret of the world.
Impossible.
Batrven son of Vendd warlord of Xudtur, the most influential man in the world, in chains like a common criminal.
Well he deserved no less.
Thainemon had liked the boy no more than he liked not being the leader of The Guardians.
Thainemon had foreseen this end since the beginning, he had told the remaining, they had ignored his warning now it had blasted in their face. Thainemon just had to endure this whole madness for a while. Soon, he would be the one in charge. Soon very soon.
He had planned this very moment. It was all like a game for him. And he always played to win. No less.
"I hate to state the obvious but I warned you about this from the beginning. If my warnings had been heeded I daresay we wouldn't be in this position." Thainemon said. His words were a seed. One among many. Soon he would come for harvest.
"We know the implications of our decisions and you need not state it ". Gewnee said.
Thainemon could see her mask of control, yet the underlying anger was there. Barely obvious. He was certain he would have missed it if he had not been paying close attention. The seeds were ripening.
"Right now, we need to discuss a way forward and not linger on the mistakes of the past".KElsier muttered.
That was Thainemon' s target. The current leader of the twelve. Some thought him wise, Thainemon thought him a coward, too scared to take necessary moves, too cowardly to take risks.
"The matter at hand need not any further consideration. Batrven has been caught. I think the next step is quite obvious, he should-"
"He should be what? Killed?. I sometimes question your wisdom, Hueen. Do you know what happens when you cut away the head of a snake?. The whole body would thrown into chaos, trashing till it finally dies. Before any rash decision is made I think we should take into consideration the implication of what we have wrought. We have taken away a leader. The whole world would be thrown into chaos and panic. A new head should be raised to replace him" Thainemon said.
Hueen was too rash to be a problem. She always charged a problem head on like a bull not knowing what she was looking for.
The boy in the middle made a choking sound.
Not until it came again did Thainemon know it was a chuckle.
The boy slowly rose and the chains clanked as they hung loosely from his wrists. The sight was horrible, the boy looked like a beggar, No not a beggar. He looked like a man that has been dragged through hell. He looked frail, limp as a stick with his golden hair smeared with blood hanging over his head stopping somewhere below his jaw. His body was covered in cuts and bruises, a result of the sadism of Yeiees.
Still the boy was chuckling.
What was amusing. Thainemon wondered.
The boy raised his head and fixed his gaze on Kelsier.
Thainemon' s heart skipped a beat.
Even though the gaze was not directed at him, he could still feel the effects.
For the first time since the boy was caught. Thainemon saw his eye.
Those black eyeballs.
Dead as stone.
Cold as winter's heart.
The eye of a predator.
The cold eye of Death.
Immediately, Thainemon had his doubts about the wisdom of the boy's capture.
"Kneel boy!". Thainemon bellowed as he lashed out a weave of air.
Thainemon's breathe caught in his throat as his weave vanished around the boy.
IT has never happened before.
Nothing could nullify weaves, no alchemy device could do that.
In desperation he sent another weave of air and fire with a little touch of spirit meant to cut off an individual from his mind,
Yet again it vanished.
Thainemon's eye widened as the wounds on the boy's body closed up, stitching up themselves with more efficiency than a master surgeon's. In the space of three breaths. All injuries had healed up.
"Is this what the guardians have come to?. Destroying lives and dreams?. Snuffing out destinies?."Batrven said quietly. His voice cold.
Maybe if he had shouted, it would have been less intimidating. The tone of that voice depicted confidence. Stone cold confidence. This was getting out of hand.
"You twelve came to pull me from my life, and you turned me into a weapon. Well that is what I am. A weapon forged to perfection. But you forgot this weapon had emotions." Batrven chuckled. "Now I am here. I want my life back." Thainemon could not believe it but, the boy's eyes grew colder, deader.
"And if I don't get it. None of you twelve will leave here alive".
No that is impossible. He could not do that. Could he?. He was immortal. No he couldn't die.
In a way Thainemon knew if the boy said he could crush the world under his feet, he would believe it.
The chains holding Batrven clanked on the stone floor as he took yet another step forward.
"Let me enlighten you. You can't hope to defeat me. I came in here as Batrven son of Vendd but now I am the Prince of Darkness. The flame that is not. I am Darkness itself. You can't comprehend me."
"Impossible". Some one said in a shaky voice. The voice sounded terribly like Kelsier.
"Oh. And who are you to say what is impossible and what is not?. You don't know my origin, do you?". Batrven paused. "Ah, I thought as much. Well I have all the time in the world."
Was it Thainemon's imagination or was the room getting darker and colder.
Thainemon could fell his heart fluttering in his chest.
The shadows caressed Batrven, slowly in an intimate dance, the shadows wrapped themselves around him.
"Ten thousand years ago, when the original guardians still lived. When the world was In chaos, when war was the order of the day. When onslaught was a normality. When corruption dominated the heart of men. The world was in turmoil. Yet during this age mages did things that would make you marvel. With equal degree did they do things that would turn your blood cold with fear. Magic of different sort assaulted the world. The world was dying slowly and steadily .The Guardians in all their wisdom sought a remedy to their chaos knowing no matter their power the could not end the war. They pondered and thought, yet the world approached oblivion. Finally they decided to do what had never been attempted in all of human history. They sought to create an entity whose presence ripples peace through all of the world. Attempts were made. Until finally success was achieved. But the host that was used lacked both the knowledge and power to contain the entity. The being went into nothingness. Yet during its short moment of existence. Its ripple of peace spread through to all the corners of the world. Also in that moment, the balance of the world was disrupted and an equal power was needed. And so was I born. Although my counterpart was imperfect. Nature always does things right. You do know the Guardians died trying to defeat me. The best they could do was seal me. And I have been waiting all these years until I was released from my prison. My very existence would bring chaos to the world. I know you would think me evil. It is the way I am. I can't help it more than the rain can help being wet."
Thainemon was stunned. He had never heard this story before. The cause of the death of the original Guardians had never been known. Now the cause of their death was back. The world was doomed.
In a loud voice that would be heard In all corners of the earth Batrven said.
"The Prince of Darkness is coming.
Let his coming be heard in all corners of the world.
Let the world weep in his coming, for destruction shall rise.
Chaos shall reign.
His coming cannot be stopped.
His enemies shall fall at the sound of his name.
And his foes crushed under his feet.
The world shall bleed until the day of reckoning
When the price of all shall be payed."
Light. Thainemon thought. The world is doomed.
