I worked in Transcorp shortly before we lost Nitel and i can tell you for free that the collapse of Nitel had been planned long before she was listed for sale. From what we saw they had already planned to share the carcass of Nitel for personal and selfish purposes and First Bank senior mgt played a notorious role in the process. Transcorp was the lead investor in reviving the moribund organization as this was one of the few viable entities in Nigeria that had a presence in almost every LGA in the country. And even after the present telcos (MTN, Airtel, Glo etc ) had setup, they were all using Nitel infrastructure. For example, when Transcorp took over Nitel, FG had 49% equity while we had 51% controlling. Part of our agreement was that we were gonna pay 50% of salaries to both Nitel and Mtel staff while FG paid the balance. I can tell you that Govt never kept her end of the bargain even for one month; we made the payment for 6 months after which we had to stop (moneky dey work baboon dey chop). Secondly we engaged BT (British Telecoms) as our technical partners and they came and started worked earnestly; they visited many of the sites and offices across the country, spoke with staff and started making in-roads. Take note by this time there was a campaign of well planned and orchestrated destruction of critical Nitel exchange and data centers across the country; unexplained fire accidents in offices that had no electricity, disappearance of data and documentation, employees unwilling to cooperate etc.....infact at some point the BT guys took a decision, packed up their stuff from The Hilton Hotel where they were quartered an left the country; as far as they were concerned, they were just flogging a dead horse. And then even as Nitel was comatose, she was still providing backbone services...and these monies were findin their way into private coffers; millions that will never be recovered. Telecoms has been a gold mine for sooooo many people and organisations. Sadly it turned out to be a loss for the entity called Nigeria. The mess is a lot more that this but let me stop here.

Can you teach me more on how Nitel equipment works in remote villages and LGA without electricity. What defines the backbone services?
