Celebrities / Comedy In The Digital Age: How Social Media Is Challenging Creative Ideas by dTalkaholic: 12:28pm On Mar 20
Generation Z might be tiring but they are well known for their innovations. Within the past years we have seen innovation that bridges generation and put a cap on milestones few have dared in recent generations. One of the industries this generation succeeds so immensely in being innovative is the comedy industry.

Previously a huge audience was given to stand-up comedy, situated within clubs, stadiums and strategic locations; comedians were able to create a lucrative end for themselves. The likes of AY, Ali Baba, Gordons, I Go Die were the talk of the town with their shows i.e. Night of a Thousand Laff. Within the landscape, we spent time with actors like the late Mr. Ibu, Sam Loko, Chiwetalu Agu, Mama G, and how can we forget the duo, Aki and Pawpaw, two gem actors that their memes makes the round.

We were only exposed to two forms of comedy: movies and stand-up. The digital world has created platforms for creators who wouldn’t fit into any of the paradigm and making a wave for themselves. Individuals such as Lasisi Elenu, Layi Brother Shaggi, Wasabi are not only in the genre of comedy but are influencers in their own right.

The digital landscape has questioned the standard of comedy we have known for years. Do I have to be standup comedian like Basket Mouth when I can make do with a good camera and quality contents like Layi Wasabi? Do I necessarily have to be stage funny or make up stories and vlog on events that individuals can relate to like Hauwa? There is no longer a definite definition to what we once knew for comedy and that to me is perfectly fine. Individuals are now given full expressions, from skit makers, digital creators that creates relatable clips to tweets that brightens your day.

Within every corner, there is a comedian. However, despite the innovation, nothing beats the feel of being gathered together for the sole purpose of laughter. There is something so beautiful about a group of people coming together to laugh at a common end, be it economics, politics or relationship; to laugh at yourself and the imperfections we all face.

It tells us we are dust after all but importantly it beats down on the seriousness we take on life. K. O. Baba, Gordons, Mudiaga, Pashun, Mr. Paul, Danny Spry, Last Prophet, Angel de Laff and some of Port Harcourt’s finest Dr. Vee, GSN, Akpan Okon, Prof Amani, Mc Dave, Mc Intelligent and the winner of Gems of Pitakwa 2023. Within these comedians are codes of conducts that align their humor to be clean and classy- humor that is suitable for all age range without demoralizing or insulting anyone. Selling for seven thousand naira is the regular and one-man ticket, but other packages cater for couples, network and well curated dishes, not neglecting the regular.

Packages are available for disaporas, individuals coming from outside Port Harcourt.

Celebrities / How To Find Miracles In Everyday Moment Through Comedic Relief by dTalkaholic: 12:16pm On Mar 20
“Life is chaotic” is a boring statement. I have heard it too many times. Is life chaotic? Yes! Simply living is exhausting; becoming better human takes guts, most things are not in your favour on that journey not to talk of weather and climate issues, war, poverty etc.

At the same time, life is fun! I believe God have a sense of humor and uniquely so, it is so subtle you might never notice till you intently listen. An instance is a woman who is largely packed at the bottom and yet lacking at other areas of curve. An elephant can run hysterically at the sight of a lion etc.

There is humor in the tiniest place, you don’t need to scout the Amazon looking for it. Ever wonder how those within the creeks and sidelined areas seem to be happy within themselves? They have mined humor right there and created a paradise in their dark spot. This is the similar story of K.O. Baba who started his comedy show at Diobu, his first performance at Royal Castle hotel, Ebe Jumbo. He is a singular proof that humor doesn’t need glass windows to exist.

Now, for the third time in a roll, K.O. Baba will be selling out the EUI Center, Port Harcourt- a 5,000 seat capacity hall. Humor can exist in tiniest space and also the largest space with K.O. Baba in collaboration with A-list comedians as Gordons, Mudiaga, Pashun, Mr. Paul, Danny Spry, Last Prophet, Angel de Laff and some of Port Harcourt’s finest Dr. Vee, GSN, Akpan Okon, Prof Amani, Mc Dave, Mc Intelligent and the winner of Gems of Pitakwa 2023.
These comedians will be delivering a full-proof five hours comic sensation on the different ways “THEY LIKE TO FOOL US”.

“They’ in this case will represent anyone or everyone who has manipulated, deceived, under-promised, under-delivered to us one way or the other. If you are intent to listen while you’re laughing your guts out, you would see the million ways you have been fooled and then you can find humor within these paths.

I wish you a million sceneries of humor as you go about your day.

Celebrities / Comedians Are The Closest To God When It Comes To Honesty by dTalkaholic: 12:07pm On Mar 20
People say when you’re angry; you speak your truth more. I find this statement problematic. Anger is the nest where honesty lies, but it isn’t the only nest.
Sarcasm and comedy is treasure vest where honesty lies, and the amazing thing about it is that it is so subtle you might not realize it. For instance, notice when you and your friends are discussing and they throw a snidely statement in Nigerian’s pidgin like “you wey your wig dey smell’ (translation: go and make your hair), or ‘you wan sell your liver to use buy am’ (translation: you are poor)”.

We most times turn blind eyes to these statements when they are being said because we are too focused on mining the humor out of a speech.
Neuroscience explains the frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for intercepting humor. When someone cracks jokes, it is a series of processing that happens within milliseconds.

It first decodes the joke from the context, tone and meaning. It is a plus when your joke is relatable, resonating the experiences the individuals has previously.

When the brain identifies the humor, it activates a reward system which creates dopamine and then a pleasurable sensation. The brain doesn’t love pain hence it always seek for what would grant it dopamine. Your brain will aim to focus on what is rewardable within a joke rather than the truth one is pointing out because the brain wants to be gratified.

This singular reason explains why comedians can say a whole lot of truths in thirty minutes and yet very few will notice. This is why comedians are fearless and in some sense powerful.

From the early days, comedy has being a platform of truth and free speech. It is easier to disguise fear in the face of humor because no one is focused on sorting out fear or any other emotion other than humor. That is why comedians jabs politics, rules and laws, speeches and movement without being arrested.

If you are thinking about going to comedy now because you want a platform of free speech without a checkmate system, don’t.
Not everyone has the talent and strength to soar that water and not very privileged audience have the blessing of a comedian with a wise intuition but I do believe most successful comedians are embodiment of wisdom.

However, on the 1st of April, 2024 we would be having a combination of humor and truth at the 5,000 capacity EUI center with the theme “THEY LIKE TO FOOL US”. A-list comedians like K.O. Baba, Gordons, Mudiaga, Pashun, Mr. Paul, Danny Spry, Last Prophet, Angel de Laff and some of Port Harcourt’s finest Dr. Vee, GSN, Akpan Okon, Prof Amani, Mc Dave, Mc Intelligent and the winner of Gems of Pitakwa 2023. Be rest assured you would have doses of truth and mirror staring back at you so you see how you have been fooled; from relationships, business, academics, parenting etc. You don’t have to worry about going home depressed; there is enough humor for your brain to drown in dopamine.

Jokes Etc / The Therapy Comedy Shows Brings To Your Doorstep by dTalkaholic: 2:08am On Mar 14
Misery likes company but what solves misery is humor. Matter of fact humor has to be one of the safest spot for humans; there is the sense of comfort and blissfulness that comes with humor. It creates escapism for the mind and inspires a sense of hope subconsciously.

For individuals on the street of Twitter, humor has been a tag-along for most posts; relationships, politics and even on health. If Twitter is the craze street of Nigeria, it is fueled by humor. The question then is why do you need a comedy show if you can feed off the streets of Twitter and Insagram for humor?

The answer is because memories are indelible and experiences are the centre stage of people’s live.
Musicians like Davido, Wizkid, Burna boy, Ayra Star have toured the world and curate experiences for their fans and enthusiast. Simply coming together for a common goals bonds people, it gives people the sense of homogeneity, ‘we are all in this together’.

Similarly, there is something so beautiful about a group of people coming together to laugh at a common end, be it economics, politics or relationship; to laugh at yourself and the imperfections we all face.

It tells us we are dust after all but importantly it beats down on the seriousness we take on life. It creates a realm where we are free to be children and forget the many burdens we carry on our shoulder, bring to our awareness that sadness doesn’t always solve a problem; we can go through any problem as far we have people around us and definitely, we will be okay.

During this period of hardship, humor is the survival mechanism for Nigerians and in the comedic sensation titled Mayor of Pitakwa, over 5000 people of different background and some of different race, will be seated to laugh at the many ways we have been fooled; either through politics, relationships, academics, business wise etc.

Done on Easter Monday, this year theme is aptly suited to fit the day, April fool’s day. It is necessary to laugh at this circus Nigeria we dearly love because at the end of the day, humor is our armor of strength. I dare say every one of us has been a fool, and that is okay because foolishness is needful to form wisdom.

A-list comedians like KO. Baba, Gordons, Mudiaga, Pashun, Mr. Paul, Danny Spry, Last Prophet, Angel de Laff and some of Port Harcourt’s finest Dr. Vee, GSN, Akpan Okon, Prof Amani, Mc Dave, Mc Intelligent and the winner of Gems of Pitakwa 2023.
