Had God willed, He would have made you a single community, but He wanted to test you regarding what has come to you. So compete with each other in doing good. Every one of you will return to God and He will inform you regarding the things about which you differed.” (Surat al-Ma’ida, 48) |

One of the excavated fragments made from fine silk and silver thread discovered at the two Swedish sites, Birka and Gamla Uppsala. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/660/cpsprodpb/8DBC/production/_98248263_1.jpg Researchers in Sweden have found Arabic characters woven into burial costumes from Viking boat graves. The discovery raises new questions about the influence of Islam in Scandinavia, writes journalist Tharik Hussain. They were kept in storage for more than 100 years, dismissed as typical examples of Viking Age funeral clothes. But a new investigation into the garments - found in 9th and 10th Century graves - has thrown up groundbreaking insights into contact between the Viking and Muslim worlds. Patterns woven with silk and silver thread have been found to spell the words "Allah" and "Ali". The breakthrough was made by textile archaeologist Annika Larsson of Uppsala University while re-examining the remnants of burial costumes from male and female boat and chamber graves originally excavated in Birka and Gamla Uppsala in Sweden in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. She became interested in the forgotten fragments after realising the material had come from central Asia, Persia and China. Larsson says the tiny geometric designs - no more than 1.5cm (0.6in) high - resembled nothing she had come across in Scandinavia before. "I couldn't quite make sense of them and then I remembered where I had seen similar designs - in Spain, on Moorish textiles." Unlocking a puzzle, Larsson then realised she was not looking at Viking patterns at all but ancient Arabic Kufic script. There were two words that kept recurring. One of them she identified with the help of an Iranian colleague. It was the name "Ali" - the fourth caliph of Islam. But the word next to Ali was more difficult to decipher. To unlock the puzzle, she enlarged the letters and examined them from all angles, including from behind. "I suddenly saw that the word 'Allah' [God] had been written in mirrored lettering," she says. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/DBDC/production/_98248265_2.jpg Enlarging the patterns and looking at the reflection in a mirror revealed the word 'Allah' (God) in Arabic Larsson has so far found the names on at least 10 of the nearly 100 pieces she is working through, and they always appear together. The new find now raises fascinating questions about the grave's occupants. "The possibility that some of those in the graves were Muslim cannot be completely ruled out," she says. "We know from other Viking tomb excavations that DNA analysis has shown some of the people buried in them originated from places like Persia, where Islam was very dominant. Her team is now working with the university's department for immunology, genetics and pathology to establish the geographic origins of the bodies dressed in the funeral clothes. Historic first: Contact between the Viking and Muslim worlds has long been established by historic accounts and the discovery of Islamic coins across the northern hemisphere. Two years ago, researchers re-examined a silver ring from a female tomb at Birka and found the phrase "for Allah" inscribed on the stone. Again the text was Kufic, developed in the Iraqi town of Kufah in the 7th Century - one of the first Arabic scripts used to write down the Koran. What makes Larsson's discovery so interesting is that it is the first time historic items mentioning Ali have ever been unearthed in Scandinavia. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/E15E/production/_98249675_919eb080-6bc6-49eb-8dec-73a1d8f559ee.jpg A Viking ring with a Kufic inscription saying "for Allah" was found inside a 9th Century woman's grave in Birka two years ago. "The name Ali is repeated again and again beside Allah," she says. "I know Ali is highly revered by the largest Muslim minority group, the Shia, and have wondered if there is a connection." Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, having married his daughter Fatima. He also became the fourth leader of the Muslim community after Muhammad died. Although both Sunnis and Shia revere Ali as an important companion of Muhammad, he has elevated status amongst the Shia, who see him as the Prophet's spiritual heir. "The use of Ali does suggest a Shia connection," says Amir De Martino, programme leader of Islamic studies at the Islamic College in London. "But without the phrase 'waly Allah' accompanying the name - meaning 'friend of Allah' - this would not be from mainstream Shia culture and might just have been copied wrongly from something that was," adds De Martino, who is also the chief editor of Islam Today, a British Shia magazine. Inscriptions on the ceiling of Demir Baba Tekke, an Alevi mausoleum in north-eastern Bulgaria. The right side has the names Allah, Muhammad and Ali written in legible, simple Arabic. The left side shows a blue mystical pattern within which all three names have been interlocked. Image caption Inscriptions on the ceiling of an Alevi mausoleum in Bulgaria feature - on the right - the names Allah, Muhammad and Ali written in legible, simple Arabic while on the left there is a blue mystic pattern with the three names interlocked. https://ichef-1.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/6C2E/production/_98249672_6.jpg The names Allah and Ali are often represented in enigmatic patterns inside the tombs and books of mystical Shia sects such as the Alevis and Bektashis to this day, but always they are accompanied by the name Muhammad. These can sometimes include mirrored script. But unlike Larsson's find, these examples usually include both the name depicted the correct way around and the reflection. For Larsson though, her discovery offers much promise for the future. "Now that I am looking at Viking patterns differently, I am convinced I will find more Islamic inscriptions in the remaining fragments from these excavations, and other Viking era textiles. "Who knows? Maybe they appear in non-textile artefacts too." Source: www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-41567391 |

Days after the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, announced new cut off marks fixed at 120 and 100 for universities and polytechnics respectively, the examination body has revealed the reason for its decision. The examination board stated that contrary to speculations that it fixed the tertiary institutions minimum admission cut-off marks, the decision as a consensus between all stakeholders in the education sector. While explaining the new cut off marks announced on Tuesday, JAMB, through its Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, insisted that stakeholders in the education sector deemed the cut-off marks fit for entry into universities for the 2017 academic year. The cut-off mark pegged at 120 however comes lower than the consensus of the previous year which was pegged at 180. While allaying the fear of Nigerians that the recent move might further deteriorate the standard of education in the country, the examination board’s registrar further stated that besides the recommended cut off marks, individual institutions are free to raise their minimum entry marks but not higher than 180 and lower than 120 for universities. He said: “With this decision, universities are not to go below the minimum 120 cut-off points adopted by the meeting for admissions.” Oloyede further stressed the need for flexible cut-off marks for admission process into higher institutions in the country. He added: “What JAMB did was a recommendation,we only determined the minimum, whatever the various institutions determine as their admission cut-off mark is their decisions. The Senate and academic boards of universities should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks.” Source: https://www.socializee.net/how-we-arrived-at-the-new-cut-off-marks-jamb-explains/ mynd44 lalasticlala |
Barcelona’s Argentinian forward Lionel Messi https://i2.wp.com/dailynigerian.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/54212-thumb.jpg Football icons and longtime rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo joined Spanish sports stars around the world in expressing their grief after Thursday’s terror attack in Barcelona left 13 people dead. Barcelona’s most famous street Las Ramblas was packed with tourists when a van drove into the crowds, leaving scenes of carnage. “I want to send my condolences and all my support to the families and friends of the victims of the terrible attack in our beloved Barcelona, in addition to totally rejecting any act of violence,” Barcelona star Messi, 30, wrote on Instagram. “We are not going to give up, there are many more of us who want to live in a world in peace, without hate and where respect and tolerance are the basis of coexistence,” added the Argentine who arrived in the Catalan capital as a teenager 14 years ago. Real Madrid’s Portuguese captain Ronaldo took to social media to express his shock at the attack which also left more than 50 injured. “Dismayed at the news coming from Barcelona. All the support and solidarity (to) the family and friends of the victims,” he wrote on Twitter. Like Ronaldo and Messi, other athletes took to social network in an outpouring of solidarity with the Catalan capital. “All my support for the families affected and the city,” Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal wrote on Twitter, while his great friend, basketball player Pau Gasol, declared himself “devastated by what happened on the Ramblas in Barcelona. All my support for the victims, wounded and relatives in these difficult times.” All football clubs in the Spanish first and second divisions will observe a minute’s silence in memory of the victims when the new La Liga season starts on Friday. “All clubs will pay homage to the victims and their families after the tragedy in Barcelona,” Spanish league officials said in a statement. Spanish three-time world motorcycling champion Marc Marquez, also a Catalonia native, accompanied his message with an image of a circle formed with the motto “I love Barcelona” surrounding that same expression in Catalan with a big heart. From Portugal, Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas wrote: “What sadness, all my solidarity with the victims and their families. A lot of strength Barcelona.” And from Paris, a city that has also suffered similar terror outrages, Paris Saint-Germain’s Spanish coach Unai Emery was “very saddened by the news coming from Barcelona, unfortunately one more black day. All my support for the victims and their families “ “No to terrorism. No to the dictatorship of fear. Stop terrorism,” wrote Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos on Twitter, with the image of a broken heart. FC Barcelona took to Twitter: “Deeply saddened by the attack on our city. All our thoughts are with the victims, their families and with the people of Barcelona.” Barcelona also said their players would wear black armbands in their home game against Real Betis on Sunday. Real Madrid issued an official statement expressing “its deepest sorrow regarding the attack which has taken place in the city of Barcelona and the club stands together with the victims, their families and their friends. “It also hopes for the quickest possible recovery to all those injured in the incident.” Villarreal, meanwhile, decided to suspend the official presentation of Colombian striker Carlos Bacca “as a sign of mourning” for the attack. From the world of cycling, the general director of the Vuelta, which begins Saturday in the French city of Nimes, said: “We are dismayed by the dramatic attack in Barcelona and our condemnation of these events is total.” Source: https://www.socializee.net/messi-ronaldo-lead-sports-stars-in-condemning-barcelona-attack/ mynd44 lalasticlala |

https://i0.wp.com/pmexpressng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Mad-man.jpg It appears a challenging time for some mentally deranged people who roam the streets of Lagos as recent clampdown and mob attacks on suspected ritualists seems to be catching up against them in Lagos. This had to do with the perception that some of them only disguised as mad people to commit various crimes. P.M.EXPRESS reports that the ugly situation followed the arrest and attempted mob action on a mentally deranged man by the residents of Ikeja suspected to be a member of kidnapping and ritualists gang. On 8 August, 2017 at Ajala Bus Stop in Ijaye-Ojokoro area of Lagos, two persons, suspected to be kidnappers were burnt to death, while some buildings were vandalized under the suspicion that the occupants might be aiding the heinous crimes of the kidnappers. Again, two days later, 10 August at Ile- Zik Bus Stop, along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, some destitute escaped death by the whiskers as the timely arrival of a police team saved their lives. However, another set of destitute who were believed to be mentally-ill were not lucky on 11 August as they were mobbed and set ablaze on the allegation that they have on them some expensive phones. The next day, a young man was nearly mobbed at Isheri Olofin at Oraphetal bus stop along Igando-Iyana Iba expressway after a resident raised alarm that he had a phone, gun and cash of about N400,000 on him. However, before he could be lynched by the mob, the Divisional Police Officer of Idimu Police Division, SP Fayomi Solomon moved his men, rescued the man and took him to the station. During investigation, it was discovered that it was a false alarm as none of the items mentioned was with him. Meanwhile, this new trend have prompted the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni to raise the alarm and warned against jungle justice being committed by the residents in the state. Owoseni condemned the act which he described as barbaric and uncivilized that had no justification. He said in the course of the disdainful acts, vital evidences were destroyed which hampered investigation by the police. He said the act was against the constitution and amounted to abuse of human dignity and called for restraint. He posited that if there was any suspicion, it was the duty of the citizen to report such matter to the police for proper investigation and prosecution. He warned that those who attempts such henceforth will be dealt with according to the law. Lagos and Ogun states chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for the expulsion of Sen. Buruji Kashamu from the party, accusing him of anti-party activities and antics meant to destroy the party. https://i1.wp.com/www.sunnewsonline.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/kashamu-1.jpg They stated this in their resolutions in Ado-Ekiti during their meeting with the reconciliation committee set up by the national leadership of the party in the South-West zone chaired by Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose. Briefing newsmen at the end of the meetings, the Zonal Secretary, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo, said leaders from the two states endorsed the resolutions. Among PDP leaders who signed the resolutions were former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Capt. Tunji Shelle, Chief Joju Fadairo, Alhaji Sikirulahi Olawale among others. The resolutions read: “After extensive deliberations with the Reconciliation Committee, we, party delegates from Lagos and Ogun states, arrived at the following resolutions: “1 We have resolved to work together as one united party and to learn from the past mistakes and happenings in the party. “2 We have resolved that the National Working Committee of our great party should deal and relate with the true leaders of Lagos and Ogun PDP under the Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee. “3 We also call for the immediate expulsion of Senator Buruji Kashamu for his anti-party actions and destructive antics in the South-West.” Speaking during the meetings, Fayose said while the party was interested in reconciliation, those who have gone astray must be repentant first and promise not to go astray again or undermine the progress of the party. He called on the leaders of the party in both states to give room for genuine repentant dissidents to come back. The governor added that with unity amongst them, PDP would win subsequent polls in the states. The Zonal Chairman, Olorogun Eddy Olafeso, thanked members for their support and steadfastness during turbulent period the party went through.
